there was a period around 94 or 95 when my brother first got MM that this song was played nonstop when he got home from school until he fell asleep

RIP Phife :(

Definitely in my top 3 Tribe songs.

Gonna buy beer tonight after work just so I can pour one out for Phife, drat. I was really hoping to try to catch him perform; I've seen Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad separately, I was so close to bagging all three. :smith:

Here's a question for you, rap topic: can you recommend me any more historical books about hip-hop/rap? I just finished Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation by Jeff Chang, and I want to devour more musical history! His book kind of ended abruptly and left me wanting in certain areas, so I'm hoping to get some recs here.

A quick Amazon search led me to a couple books that look decent enough: The History of Gangster Rap: From Schoolly D to Kendrick Lamar, the Rise of a Great American Art Form, Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America, The Hip Hop Wars: What We Talk About When We Talk About Hip Hop--and Why It Matters, The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop. Any thoughts on these?

Oh, also:

New Anderson Paak is real good, leaning more in to the old school soul sound, track with Smokey is the stand out so far

gently caress me I didn't even realize he has a new album out!

Oxnard was incredibly disappointing, imo, hopefully this is better. I see the first reach has Andre 3000 so I'm hopeful already.

I think Oxnard being disappointing had a lot to do with the hype and expectations being ridiculously high. It's not as good as Malibu, but I still bump a few of the tracks pretty regularly. Checking out the new album now, will post impressions after first lesson.

I actually had no idea Paak had put out a new album when I stumbled upon Oxnard, so that's not the case for me, haha. I've listened to it three separate times and I can't remember a single track from it

Def interested to hear your thoughts on the new album though, I downloaded it with the intention of listening to it today during work, and then I was running around so much I didn't have the chance.

Any of y'all listen to Ventura yet? Granted, this is only my first listen of it, but it feels like Oxnard in that it's fine I guess but I'm probably not going to remember any of this a few days from now. It's got some cool parts (mostly in the second half) and the production is nice but not enough stands out to really make it a great album.

In Fantano's review he said this whole album is Oxnard leftovers or something like that, and I could totally see that.

oh I disagree, it's wayyyyy better than Oxnard. I mean, there are some actual funky bass lines in Ventura

some of it is more poppy, I think the first half is? but it's a solid album
