Anyone know a good source of old school mixtapes, like actual ones from the 80’s-early 90s? I’m mostly looking for NYC stuff or dancehall with hip hop beats.

I could always use more of The Bug, he picks some cool collaborators https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNiYjYdOzOA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI1WgTAVr20 And the Miss Red album he produced is cool. More dancehall I guess but whatever https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRPARG-ZjBU

I never really liked rage against the machine but that cover sounds better than anything else I’ve heard him do (which admittedly isn’t much). But I’m also a fuddy duddy who can’t recognize most current rap as rap

I’m extremely psyched to see his continuing success! I’ve been following him since his appearance on the 1989 Pathological Compilation through Terminal Cheesecake, God, Techno Animal and so on. It’s awesome seeing someone developing cool sounds over decades. Kind of like El-P for example.

temple posted:I guess. there was an article about how he's everything wrong with clout chasing music. I don’t know much about clout chasing music so this got me reading some pretty bad articles about it. One said “Lil Pump’s Gucci Gang, is the best example of this era. It’s 124 seconds long, and mentions the title over 50 times. That extreme level of repetition grabs your attention by being interesting. The more attention we pay to it the easier we remember it, the higher its importance is as we focus on it.” All I could think of was this pioneering track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_SwD7RveNE

I’d say Mos Def has as many tedious moments as Kweli, you really have to cherry pick tracks by either of them. This is my favorite Kweli track https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REmk_4mx1UY

My friend Shane did the artwork for Known Unknowns and Armand Hammer’s Rome along with some other stuff for Billy Woods. Hire him for your album cover needs.

For no real reason besides a song popping into my head, here’s a track by Crooked from a 12” I picked up around when it came out in 95. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nluCPXCAN20 It starts out very Wu Tangy then goes into some dancehall stuff. I really preferred the song “Just Call Me Murderer” but it doesn’t seem to exist online. That one was a super gritty jam about being bitter about ending up in a wheelchair and murdering the gently caress out of people because of it. Its $2 on discogs, I recommend it just for just call me murderer plus the instrumentals. https://www.discogs.com/Crooked-Just-Call-Me-Murderer-When-I-Rise-Rest-In-Peace/release/955045 Here’s the other track that’s on YouTube, more west coast or something, less my style https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9KpX6jZNCs

Henchman of Santa posted:Uh have you actually listened to Danny Brown outside of the second half of Old? Yeah, but I’m admittedly not an authority on him. Going through the first 15 or so songs that come up on Genius I’d say maybe 80% are like that, conservatively? The one I hear most often is with The Bug, and the constant gently caress A BITCH is really tiresome.
