Speaking of Jacksonville, I grabbed this Ty2 - Versaveli mixtape a little while ago. Has some good moments, there's a part 2 of Love Don't Live Here on there too. If you gently caress with Kevin Gates he's a pretty clear influence on this kid's sound.

I think this was the stand out track,

Bol's thing is pretty rambling. Isn't this Mike Brown situation getting a whole bunch of media attention? There's no coverage gap there for a Public Enemy to fill anymore, they solved the problem of getting black people issues on the news. That's a win for hip-hop! That's why actual CNN is the CNN of black people now, a protest song isn't going to accomplish more than #IfTheyGunnedMeDown.

Sadly but accurately the zeitgeist of this generation is recognizing the only way not get randomly beaten and shot and generally mistreated in 2014 American society is to get your rear end in the 1%. So that's where hip-hop lives now, somewhere between aspiration and video game level escapism. If you're still getting your social justice news from hip-hop :cmon:

And No Flex Zone is easily the song of the summer.

Can someone explain the Gucci Man to me, like I'm not a regular or anything but usually from what I read you guys mostly praise 'good' music and pan the garbage white noise that is 93% of rap these days but for some reason you all unanimously adore this guy, seemingly unironically.

I'm not going to pretend I've dissected this man's music or anything but I do recall being in highschool when Freaky Gurl dropped and I guess it was catchy but most people I knew couldn't get over how hilarious the dude looked, then the other hit Lemonade has one of the coolest beats of all time IMHO and was a pretty great song to listen to for that reason but other than that I, and pretty much every one of my peers kind of dismissed and forgot about him. For understandable reasons seeing as how after a few songs the only thing you(I) can usually pick up is BRRRRRR!!! BRRRRRR!!!!or how much loud/drank/diamonds/whatever he has/is on/is wearing...just like the other 93% of rap.

I'm honestly not trying to troll, I even listened to most of the tracks on the new mixtape ya'll are talking about to see if anything changed from what I remember. First track, POUNDS OF LOUD second track I skip to randomly, something something POUNDS OF LOUD. Like, I'm not going to lie those are some of my favorite producers he's working with and it's amazing to see how they all feed him beats but that seems to be carrying him more than anything he's personally responsible for.

What don't I 'get'?

I would like to know what the good 7% of rap includes for you if not the Gucci Man.

I think entertainment and fun are perfectly valid things to add to an artform though! The cool part about rap is that literally anyone can use the medium to express themself without getting caught up on expensive instruments or music theory. I love the huge variety of voices in rap from "conscious" stuff like open mike eagle to trap stuff like waka flocka to some kid on youtube with 2k views that without rap never would have been able to express himself.

I thought his affiliation with cash money was signing them as his manager, which would let him release rich gang as free music and then birdman could eat off money he makes touring because he won't be legally allowed to release an album under the label. Anyone know?

That's the gist of it, Buzzfeed of all places did an interesting article on his situation a while back.
