I am looking for some production inspiration for a hip-hop project I am working on with a friend of mine. Anyone have any recommendations for something newer, sample-based stuff would be cool or live instruments (mostly bass and guitar), and on the funkier side?

When you say samples I immediately think of The Avalanches. 'Wildflower' has some funky hip hop in 'Because I'm Me' and 'Frankie Sinatra', and somewhat in 'Subways'. 'Since I Left You' is a masterpiece of sampling, and an album I still play all the way through. Highlights would be 'Since I Left You' and 'Frontier Psychiatrist' but man I just want to finish this post and re-listen to all the tracks, it's so fantastic.

gently caress yes. Entire album is so good. Production-wise, it feels like the King Geedorah / Viktor Vaughn albums, and it's awesome to hear stuff like that again.

Him producing documentaries is fine.

He's a great producer because he's hands off when it comes to filming. He wants nothing to do with any kind of shooting.

Thread came through again, I never listened to billy woods before and Aethiopes is amazing. Versailles is a standout, especially because I didn’t even look at the tracks before listening, so I got the total surprise of a Despot verse.

RTJ 2 and 4 really don’t have any tracks that I’d want to skip. Everything on 2 is consistently excellent. The “weaker” tracks on 4 are just weaker by comparison to the highlights of JU$T, Walking In The Snow, Pulling The Pin and Ooh LA LA.
1 was a major breathe of fresh air to me, and 3 has some standouts, but if you’re looking to play one of their albums front to back I wouldn’t start with either of them now.

gently caress, RTJ1 came out 2013. They might be the only “I was a fan way back when” I can claim, I saw them do a free show at the college union’s small outdoor stage that summer.

I was wondering if you folks could recommend something like the first Dr. Octagon album? Just listened to it for the first time the other week and like it a lot. I don't listen to much rap/hip hop, so I'm not super familiar with a lot of it, but would like to listen to more stuff that's kinda strange and has some sci-fi/fantastical lyrics.

Deltron 3030 is exactly what you're looking for. El-P's solo work is pretty strongly influenced by Blade Runner and Kurt Vonnegut, and some tracks like "Stepfather Factory" "Flyentology" and "Habeus Corpus" might scratch that itch as well.
