Non-Kendrick question because I will haven't checked it out yet: what was the last mixtape that was super great from first to last track?

I can only think of Rich Gang - Tha Tour as only recent tape that was cohesive whole. Otherwise all the other tapes I've checked out have two or three great tracks and the rest of the tape is merely "pretty cool".

Days Before Rodeo, Bullet, and East Atlanta Santa. All very cohesive and don't have a single weak spot imo

Definitely agree about Key!. I couldn't tell you how many times I've listened to Fathers are the Curse and Give Em Hell.

As an aside it's still kinda strange to me how DC has kinda never really had a huge rap presence. Like there's been random cats but they were never associated with "DC", and even Wale's never been that big. And for whatever reason Fat Trel and Shy Glizzy never seemed to catch on much.

Never really understood why he can't seem to get any real traction. Young Jefe and Law 3 were both great.

Kool AD is pretty solid all around. My favorite of his is definitely this tape he did with Kassa Overall: https://koolandkass.bandcamp.com/album/coke-boys-5

Plus he puts on the best live show of any rapper I've ever seen. He's hype as gently caress and really knows how to work a crowd. Saw him with Das Racist and opening for Run the Jewels on their first tour and he just killed it both times.

Agreed. OG Maco got big cause he was way the gently caress out there and now he seems like he's trying to fight that by putting out a bunch of generic sounding rap. There were a couple tracks off his recent EPs that were solid but nothing on the level of any track off Give Em Hell.
