I think it's because all the characters have their own distinctive believable core. Then on top of that, they're all completely nuts. Everyone has depth and everyone gets to be hilarious in their own ways.

When I reread the manga, I noticed that the shoujo romance stuff has far more of a presence than I thought it did the first time through. I think it's easy to be laughing too hard to notice. Also, this week, the Chiyo scene between the ending song and next week's preview was super adorable. Looks like they're definitely doing the festival and the flashback to when they first met for the finale. Makes sense.

Poor Chiyo-chan. I was really rooting for her at the end. I was kind of dumbfounded when she said their relationship hasn't progressed at all, though. At the start of the series, she was just this borderline stalker person he didn't know existed. Now they're quite close friends. He's willing to eat off the floor for you Chiyo! Appreciate how far you've come.

Maeno is also really good at casual social interaction. If your relationship with him is really shallow, you think he's a great, fun guy. Given this is Japan, drinking is an extremely important part of work life. I bet he's the life of work drinking parties and his boss's boss loves him. God I hate Maeno.
