This looks like this is the cheapest it's ever been. How long does this game last? I've been itching for a quality shooter for a while, and I've been eyeing this game, but I'm not rushing it, especially if it's short.

I got it when it released from GreenManGaming with a 25% deal and it was worth it even then. Straight up fun, solid shooter. There's 2 timelines to follow but I'm just warning you that there isn't a whole lot of deviation between them. Even though I've said that, even once through the game is very worth it. I did it once, set it down then came back and did the second timeline. Still just as fun. :)

I'm rarely one to play a linear game repeatedly for the hell of it, but I did play Darkness 2 for the sake of full achievements and junk, because it was a solid shooter.

Granted, I payed like...6 bucks for it on steam. Still, I'll heavily consider it--as I've been holding back on other vices lately.

That said, I remember hearing people having a tough time getting this game to run smoothly.

I know each game works differently, but I happen to run Shadow of Mordor on High rather smoothly. Radeon 7850 HD, 8 gigs of ram, 2.9GHz.

How much trouble will I have running it smoothly at 1600x900? I don't need super ultra graphics, but at least any "medium" template would be nice :shobon:

Good news, the game still looks pretty good on medium settings and if you played Darkness 2 for the cheevos then you would most likely do the same for this! Bad news, I remember there being a hub bub about it not playing nice with AMD cards. I have Nvidia. Maybe someone else can chime in?

This is my biggest issue with the game. It completely takes me out of the experience. Is there any way to improve this or am I just going to have to wait until I get a solid state hard drive?

Try lowering the difficulty. You're depriving yourself of a fun game if you're frustrated with the handicap you're giving yourself. The lethality of the enemies in that game is no joke.

For Shadow of Chernobyl, the main bug fix patch and the one I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND is the Zone Reclamation Project.

http://www.metacognix.com/stlkrsoc/

Stalker Complete is several years out of date and uses a very, very old version of ZRP as its basis. Since then it's gone through several revisions, multiple updates, and is still in completely active development. It fixes all the bugs it can fix, and contains several ease of use features that you can choose and customize at will using a dedicated program so you can customize the game however you want, either getting as close to vanilla as possible with only bug fixes, or modifying certain aspects to make it easier/harder.

There's also updated shaders:

https://sites.google.com/site/kingo64ssite/Home/optimised-game-shaders/stalker-shaders-max

This will make the game look more modern and fix some issues with graphics. There's many texture mods out there, but if you like you can just copy the textures folder over from Complete and it will make it look pretty.

Clear Sky is a bit of a mixed bag. There is the Sky Reclamation Project that is attempting to do to Clear Sky what the ZRP did to Shadow of Chernobyl but it's not quite there yet.

http://www.moddb.com/games/stalker-clear-sky/downloads/sky-reclamation-project-v103a

Call of Pripyat doesn't need any bug fixing mods really, but there is a Russian only unofficial patch that fixes a few minor logic errors, but you can play that completely out of the gate with no mods other than graphics if you like.

The standard for Call of Pripyat graphics is Atmosfear and Absolute Nature, both of which can be found on moddb.

Clear Sky is a bit of a mixed bag.

Doesn't Clear Sky have a faction wars mod that supposedly makes it even better? I think it's done by a goon. I'll have to look for a link later.

I knew about it beforehand but I went to the Steam forums, as I am wont to do after finishing a game and this time also to check if the hate train is still going. It is. CJacobs posted:

The plot hole I mentioned earlier is pretty goddamn huge so I'll just explain it for people who have pushed the game out of their minds because it really is loving incredible that this managed to slip past the writers. But I will put it in spoiler tags because there are some people in 2015 who have not played it.

Basically, Scott Shelby, gruff but washed-up detective and Lauren Winter, former prostitute-whose-son-was-killed-by-the-killer turned investigation assistant, are looking into clues and leads on who is the Origami Killer. Shelby obtains a lead that the killer uses a certain kind of typeface to type out his ominous messages, the spacing and lettering of which can only be found on one kind of typewriter. So he, with Lauren tagging along, goes to the local Curio shop with intent to view the purchase records to see if anyone has bought or sold such a typewriter in recent years. There, he meets Manfred, the kindly old owner who used to be buddies with Shelby back in his detective days. Shelby and Manfred share a drink for old times' sake while Lauren looks around the shop doing basically nothing because she's a woman in a David Cage game.

Eventually Shelby brings up the purchase records and Manfred helpfully goes into the back room to go get them, encouraging Shelby to have a look around. So you do, you go around having a look around the shop with Lauren and maybe go pee because it's a David Cage game and he likes to let you do that and then Lauren and Shelby are looking at this quaint music box, when Shelby notices that Manfred has not returned for a while. You steer Shelby in the direction of the back room and, of course, he's dead, having been killed by persons unknown. Shelby runs over to the nearby window and peers out into the rain, assuming the culprit left that way. A nearby phone hangs off the hook, the police already on the line. He tells Lauren they've been made and after he grabs the records that Manfred had just fished out, they scrub away their fingerprints and leave.

Now, absolutely none of this, not a single bit of this scene makes any sense if you know the twist, that being that Shelby was the killer all along. Later, when Shelby is disposing of the evidence that he obtained over the course of his sections of the game, it shows him sneaking up behind Manfred to kill him. Remember that you were PLAYING AS HIM when Manfred was killed and the window was open and everything implying an escape. First of all, Shelby would've had to set himself up to be captured and that's not even considering the fact that him having killed Manfred is impossible because you are in control of him when it happens. It's seriously annoying that Cage leaves plot holes like this in the games he makes because even if you did like the story up until that point, it's impossible to think of it as whole after the reveal because of inconsistent poo poo like that.

And it would have been so easy to tie it into the slimy rich dude plot that Shelby is also involved in. There's a rich guy (an oil baron I think??) whose equally rich but also nutso bonkers son claims to be the killer and knows Shelby's personal life way too closely, and by this point in the game they've already met at least once. It would have been simple to make it so that one of his goons killed Manfred to keep Shelby from finding out the truth (the truth being that he isn't actually the killer and is just pretending because he's certifiably insane and likes the publicity)... but they didn't do that because then it wouldn't tie in as well to the actual twist from a plot standpoint which again is stupid because you are literally playing as Shelby lying to himself about it at the exact moment when it happens.

I was actually enjoying the game right up until the reveal and the aftermath. A plot hole big enough to drive a MACK truck through.
