The world of Glorantha

Once Glorantha was united by the Middle Sea Empire, which stretched across the entire world, bringing people together under the wisdom of Malkion. The Empire seemed poised to bring back the the original harmony which was once the birthright of the world.

Then it was destroyed. Brought down by the foolish God Learners, who sought to bend the world to their whims. Brought down by the Empire of Wyrm's Friends, who thought that dragons should rule, and were later eaten by their own rulers. Brought down by the pagans, who believed in worshiping the natural forces of Glorantha as if they were gods. And brought down by Zzabur, the first wizard and supreme sorcerer, who cast a curse over the entire ocean, sinking any boat that tried to sail upon it.

Zzabur Closing the oceans

That was seven hundred years ago.

Now Seshnela, formerly one of the heartlands of the Middle Sea Empire, has rebuilt itself, and seems poised to bring back the harmony which once existed.
Or so they claim.
Opposing them is the Quinpolic League, founded when the seas were Opened once more, and united in their desire to remain free of the new Kingdom of Seshnela.

Between both nations lies a small island, named Giraine, once a part of the mainland and much bigger, before the Closing of the Oceans and disasters that followed broke it away.
Both the Quinpolic League and the Kingdom of Seshnela claim it as theirs. And so both have sent nobles to rule it in their name, wizards to educate the natives, soldiers to pacify it, and workers to support them.

This is where you come in. You may be from Seshnela, the Quinpolic league, a traveler from the ravaged Castle Coast or even an exiled atheist Brithini from Arolanit. In any case, you have ended up on a small trading vessel, headed across the sea to Giraine, there to seek your fortune.

Welcome to a HeroQuest 2 game, centered in exotic Seshnela.
Players will be settlers of the island province of Giraine, thrust together despite being from rival nations and different castes, to make Giraine a flourishing land, and able to ward off the disasters which are destined to come in the future.
I'm looking for around 5-6 players, who are preferably able to post at least once every two days.
If you don't know much about Glorantha, don't worry. This game is set in one of the less famous sections of the world, so even those knowledgeable about the setting may not be that familiar with this part of it. Feel free to join if at all interested, and if unsure about anything, or completely unfamiliar with the HeroQuest 2 rules, feel free to contact me on Synirc in #cowgame, where I can be found as Morgan.

Character Creation

The four castes of the Malkioni. Soldier, Noble, Worker and Wizard.

Character creation details are included in the pdf :siren:here:siren:, along with a description of the homeland and occupation keywords.

For details of the runes, see the pdf linked here. The Law Rune, although mentioned there, is not detailed. Because of its importance to the Malkioni, here are its details:

Law Rune
Meaning: Universal principles, cosmos, logic, wizardry.
The Malkioni know that the Law Rune was the first to emerge from the oblivion of Chaos, and is the basis for the entire universe. Because of its origins, it is the foundation of wizardry, the science of manipulating the rules of the Cosmos to produce magical effects. The Law Rune once manifested as Malkion the Founder, but is regarded as being the sole province of the Invisible God of Malkioni legend.
As the basis of wizardry, any grimoire may be a breakout of the Law Rune.
Personality Traits: Analytical, deductive
Incompatible with: Chaos

HeroQuest
(Much of this OP is based on the opening posts of earlier games by Tran and FriarJohn. My thanks go out to them)

Basic Mechanics
Abilities and Keywords
An ability can be anything your character can use to interact with the game in some way. It can be a physical attribute (strong as an ox), a mental skill (knowledge of oxen), a personality trait (stubborn as an ox), a flaw (relates everything in terms of oxen), a possession (owns a flock of chickens), or anything else you can think of.
Keywords are broad and general abilities, relating to such things as an occupation or a background (eg. ox farmer). These can be used like any other ability in play, for anything related to that keyword (for example, a soldier will know all about how to fight with a sword, or how to set up camp). Keywords cost more to raise in play (see the Hero Point section for details), but may also contain other abilities. For instance while all soldiers will know how to fight, a soldier who specializes in archery will be far better than others. These abilities are known as breakouts.
Abilities and Keywords are rated on a scale of 1 to 20. When you increase an ability beyond 20, instead of going to 21, the ability is now rated at 1W. The W (or ), is known as a Mastery, and indicates a level of skill beyond that of most people. When in a contest, you increase your level of success by 1 for each mastery you have. If both sides of the contest have masteries, they cancel each other out on a one for one basis.
Breakout abilities are noted beneath their keywords as an increase. For instance:
Sailor 17
- Catch Fish +1
While performing any other sailing activities, the sailor has a rating of 17. While catching fish, they have a rating of 18.

Contests
Most actions will be determined with a simple test. 1d20 will be rolled for you, and one for your opponent or resistance.
Both attempt to roll under their appropriate number.
The results are then compared on a step scale of Critical -> Success -> Failure -> Fumble.
The distance in steps determines the result.

Augments
Any defined ability, keyword, or rune may be used to improve the next test of another ability.
You must describe the way in which the augment improves your action prior to the test in question.
You may describe the augment in one of two ways. 1. An association that the group as a whole finds interesting or funny. If it elicits a regular, positive response it will fit here. 2. A logical association. If it's a simple claim that a keyword that covers training with a weapon would improve combat with that weapon, it belongs here.
The level of augmentation depends upon how how appropriate/interesting the ability being used to augment is.
Comical or clever augments may be used as long as the group finds them interesting. Logical augments may only be described the same way once. The general rule of thumb here is to avoid getting stale. Switch it up, and you can keep reaping the benefit of augments.

Wounds and Lingering Benefits
Any time you make a contest, the result may add an advantage or penalty to following uses of that ability or group.
In the case of a success, usually this will apply a temporary bonus to subsequent uses. These bonuses will vanish when next you fail a contest with that ability.
In the case of failure, you will accrue "Injuries" to all abilities associated with the one in use. These can be anything appropriate to the contest at hand. From actual wounds in physical combat onto simple embarrassment in a social situation.
Wounds come in four levels. Hurt->Impaired->Injured->Dying.
Wounds are healed either through time or supernatural means.

Hero Points
Players begin the game with 3 Hero Points.
Hero Points are both your advancement and your extra effort pool. Points will generally be awarded at the end of each major event. I will award extra points to players I feel have effort-posted often and/or well.
New abilities may be purchased at a cost of 1 HP. These will start at rating 13.
Any ability may be raised for the cost of a single hero point one per season.
If attempting to raise the same ability multiple levels in the same season, the cost goes from 1 -> 3 -> 6 -> 10 HP spent per increase.
Keyword costs are double that of an ability, or 2 -> 6 -> 12 -> 20
Hero Points may also be spent to purchase an improvement to any contest result. Raising you by one step from Fumble -> Major Failure -> Minor Failure -> Marginal Failure -> Stalemate -> Marginal Victory -> Minor Victory -> Major Victory -> Critical Success.

Talmakos Tragonid, Noble and Man-of-All in training

Talmakos is named after the pious and great king of Seshnela of the First Age, who fought side by side with the hero Gerlant. Born as the nephew of the wizard Ulianus, from an early age Talmakos strove to master the spells of Gerlant, whose flaming sword did so much to establish justice and peace throughout the land. But as a wizard, Talmakos couldn't perfectly emulate his hero. After being given a vision of Joy by Malkion as a young man, he embarked on the arduous task to become a Paragon, a master of not one, but all four castes. He spent years as a Redsmith, and as a bodyguard, meeting many men and women from outside his birth caste. Now he has stepped into the Talar caste, the final road he must walk to ensure his place as a Man-of-All.

Talmakos is fierce in battle, his flaming iron sword sometimes being enough to break the enemy, even before his mighty armored steed Trymir crushes them under his hoofs. Like most of the men of the Castle Coast, he considers the Rokari pathetic barbarians, unfit to call themselves the heirs of Gerlant's kingdom. Talmakos has been sent to Giraine to reinforce the Tragonid family's claim to the newly-discovered lands there, and he has no intention of failing in this duty!

Adelbrand the Sober, Pedantic Knower

Born a third son in a family of Seshnegi talars very distantly related to King Guilmarn, Adelbrand’s relative physical weakness, mental acuity and early fondness for books has more or less ensured that he would be turned over to the zzaburi at a young age. His mother was a lapsed Brithini from Arolanit, necessitating a visit to Arolanit to notify her immortal relatives about her death. It was during this visit that young Adelbrand's potential was first noticed, and arrangements were made shortly after his return. He took to zzaburi training with both ease and zeal. What he sometimes lacked in creativity or raw power, he made up for with studious learning and attention to detail. Adelbrand also happily absorbed an extreme version of the Rokari teachings, becoming convinced that there is no afterlife and that the only Solace in the world is to be found in the proper fulfillment of one’s caste duties. Even among his fellow zzaburi, he gained a reputation for espousing this gloomy outlook openly and often, which, along with his discipline, earned Adelbrand the moniker that was to stick with him even later. However, as far as he was concerned, there was nothing in there to be sad about – it was simply the truth, which was always preferable to the “joyful” delusions of immortality or afterlife offered by the Hrestoli heretics and sometimes indulged in by members of the other, less wise though otherwise quite worthy castes.

Adelbrand’s erudition, diligence and genuine piety had seemed to make an exemplary career in the Rokari hierarchy an inevitability, something he took for granted. Tragically and incredibly, it was his very insistence on the truth that led to his continued frustration. It was not appreciated by his peers in training, whose infractions he diligently reported on when asked, even though it was for their own good. When he became a Knower of the Abiding Book, his efforts at spiritual instruction, though unswerwingly orthodox, were disparaged as “demoralising” and even as “sabotage” by the local Talar, who was inexplicably irate at the wholly temporary effects of the shock received by his workers upon becoming educated as to the true meaning of life, death and Solace during a funeral ceremony. When the local Watcher responded to the complaints of the Readers and summoned Adelbrand to an audience in which he ordered him to cease perplexing commoners with truths beyond their understanding, Adelbrand stood his ground in the ensuing debate and went away unbowed and certain that his efforts will soon be rewarded.

Instead, Adelbrand was recalled and kept away from most members of the other castes for well over a year. He spent the time fruitfully, continuing his studies of Rokar’s Right and Wrong Reading alongside other scholarly pursuits, but he could not help feeling slighted. This feeling troubled him, as he feared it may be a product of his talar heritage, which he should have suppressed. Nonetheless, it grew even stronger when he was finally given his next assignment – his new posting was on the recently rediscovered island of Giraine! While Adelbrand felt that he was indeed supremely qualifed to make sure that the settlers do not stray from Rokar’s teachings in the face of the spiritual peril posed by heretics and savages, being sent to that backwater island was clearly an insult, a punishment wholly undeserved. To try and set this injustice right, the zzaburi set out on a desperate course of action; he contrived to get a short audience with Theoblanc the Pious, and complained to him about the decision. Happily, the Watcher Supreme instantly understood the injustice and the waste of Adelbrand’s reassignment. Unhappily, he insisted that he should still go through with it. But at the same time, Theoblanc explained that this was more than just an exile; while Adelbrand’s ill-wishers might think that they had gotten their way, in truth there was an important task for the Rokari School that the Knower would carry out while there. He was to keep an eye on the heretics – and pay special attention to any God Learner relics or other dangerous magical oddities that the settlers might unearth.

Buoyed by a newfound sense of mission, and certain that success will give the much needed boost to his career and enable him to spread his understanding undeterred by intrigue, Adelbrand set off for Giraine...

Dagram the "Diligent", Mercenary Corsair

The crocodile society, famous for its efforts to guard the lowborn worker caste from the many dangers of the wild. Humble and rustic, they tend to spend much of their time among forests and fens hunting the great beasts of the land. For their efforts they earn the trust and praise of many a poet and farmer. Dagram on the other hand, was never very good at any of that.

What Dagram, sometimes jokingly called "the Diligent", did have was an uncanny knack for taking the path of least resistance. Faced with a choice like hunting in the wilds or guarding a ship against pirates and sea monsters, he inevitably opted for the one that involved considerably less wilderness hiking and more fish stew. That isn't to say Dagram is hopelessly lazy. He simply likes to be rewarded relative to his effort. Indeed when faced with pirates, sea monsters, or the odd Vadeli he has proven a remarkably talented if unconventional fighter.

Of course, taking the easy path has its pitfalls. Not asking why the captain offers triple pay does fatten the purse, but you may end up with people asking questions. Enough of those questions, and it's time to move on. So Dagram signs on for one of the many ships headed to Giraine. Just one more mercenary among many.

Okay, here we go:
Edit: After some conversation with morgan, I am going to make a quick re-do of his runes and abilities.

Neleos

Neleos the White, as he was one called, was one of the White Wizards of Zzabur, living in the gray and dull Brithini enclave of Arolanit. He spent years of his immortal life making sure that the people around him followed the ancient ways and did not stray from the proper Brithini path.

He has now arrived on the isle of Giraine, apparently in search of some kind of ancient secret or other. What nobody else knows, though, is that Neleos is also a fugitive. After so much time spent enforcing the ancient laws, he had began doubting them himself. This heresy was found by his fellow Zzaburi, and he was deemed sinful - he had become mortal, as evidenced by his wrinkling face. He left his town willingly, for he had found a greater goal for his life - to do what no other Zzaburi had ever done - find the vanished land of Brithos and seek guidance in his ways from the First Sorcerer himself. Despite this new found meaning, he is deeply paranoid of meeting another Brithini and his mortality being revealed, and would do anything in his power to stop any of the "lesser" Malkioni people from finding out.

Neleos is a tower of a man, looking taller still in his high shoes and tall hat. His skin is blue, like the skin of all of the Wizard caste, and he is dressed in the proper clothes for his caste (in other words, absurdly heavy winter robes and hat).

So enthralled was the noble by her storytelling that he delayed her death 'till the next night that he might hear the ending. Taretax

Taretax grew up with his great-grandfather in a small, ramshackle house North East of the ruins of Woswal, owing fealty to a Prince so far away that the only other humans Taretax had ever seen were the few tax collectors who would dare to ride so close to Beastman lands. Always dissatisfied by their meagre existence and awed by the majesty of the tax collectors, when his great-grandfather died he took the opportunity to move closer to his fief's castle with the aim of becoming closer to these strange and interesting men. Living so close to his Prince, he stifled under the considerably higher amount of taxes he was now expected to pay, was offended by the transgressions against caste his neighbours showed and was confused by the differences in teachings his guildmates had. When the opportunity came, he joined the first ship to Giraine to again start a new life.

Taretax’s family, having lived a long time without any strong outsider influence, developed a unique version of Hrestoli philosophy which Taretax didn’t pay much attention to. He knows at least two things: that Hrestol was shown the Pure Deep and experienced Joy, and that to marry outside of the caste one was born into is a gross offence.

Luc, Curious Wizard

Luc is a wizard from Pithdaros of Agimori descent. His tall, thin frame is accentuated by the traditional blue wizard's garb, especially the platform shoes and tall hat; the latter is usually wreathed in kafl smoke from a clay pipe. Over the blue woollen robes he wears a brass tablet with runes inscribed upon it.

From his earliest years, Luc's had an insatiable curiosity, a desire to learn about the world around him. Born into the dronar caste, the son of redsmiths, limited his learning opportunities. Thus when the zzaburi examiners came looking for promising children to recruit, he desperately hoped they would pick him. To his delight, and his parents great pride, he was.

He threw himself with devotion into his studies and practices; this was his dream come true, for the most part. While he was and remains a believer in Rokarism, he was uncomfortable with the level fanaticism displayed by some, and disliked the religious police. He agreed with the need to maintain caste restrictions; he wasn't falling into heresy (a matter of opinion, of course), he was just uneasy with the methods used. Of course, he kept these concerns to himself; it wasn't his place to say anything.

When the opportunity arose to travel to Giraine, he jumped at the chance. He saw it as an opportunity to learn new things, to represent the Ekozite School all the while getting away from some of the more zealous elements.

That should be it, with a kind assist from Tindalos.

I've done a little tinkering, most recently because I re-read the rules on companions. I had recalled that he needed an ability that reflected his nature, but I hadn't recalled that this ability is a keyword. With that understanding, it occurred to me that his other abilities were more like breakout abilities, so back into the keyword they went. I'll probably spend some Hero points fleshing out the companion as we go along.

And I'll stop tinkering when we go live :D.

Daros Trososides

The colonization of the Island of Giraine is an opportunity. An opportunity first for the Quinpolic League, which seeks to expand its area of influence, both for wealth and to defend itself against the expansionist Seshnelan Empire, but also an opportunity for the individual great families of the Quinpolic League, who seek to take for themselves the wealth that the exploitation of this new property can bring.

Daros is a merchant lord, one of the nobles who seek to enrich both himself and the League through commerce and trade. The Merchant Lords are the backbone of the league, for it is by their efforts that the League accumulates the wealth to pay their army and navy; the wealth to develop its infrastructure; the wealth to stay independent from King Guilliarm, who lusts to take back the 'rebel provinces'. He is from Nolos, his family nobles of note there. They claim descent from a Lord Trosos, by legend, an associate of Talar himself. However, that was a long time ago, and the family, once prominent, has lost much of its influence. It is not powerless, however, still owning plantations in Nolos. With the reopening of the sea, new opportunities, arose, and Daros took the opportunity to invest in a merchant ship, which he now captains, attempting to regain his family's glory.

So, when news came that the League sought to bring Girane under its sway, he volunteered to go...to bring it under Quinpolic domination, to open it for trade and commerce, to establish administration there, and, if he could, to gain lands and wealth for himself.

Talmakos Tragonid
e's an odd 'un. I doesn't know if I could talk t'im, 'im being "Man of All", would be like a talkin' te stew wi' all them bits mixed up. Bit queer like- bein' wi' all the colours, but folks round here says Hrestol did it, so. He's yellow now, so I dursn't say 'owt lest I get it wrong and 'e brays us. If'n he speaks to us, I hope 'e remembers bein' brown; I couldn't make mi'ssen talk about fancy teas and grand gear and the like.

Adelbrand the Sober
I doesn't have much dealin's with blues, them folks keep t' thi'ssens oft. 'eard a scullery-lad talk say 'e spake t'em about death back 'yam, "he's dowly" 'e said, "talks to us browns like people though, like"; seems reet decent. If'n I hooks a fish for him, I'll stuff 't wi' yellow's spice and make 'm as happy as shagging trout.

Dagram the "Diligent"
If 'e sat hi'ssen beside us I'd share 'im a brew. 'e ain't soft and don't do 'owt for nowt, the lads down deck say he's a good 'un. I spied 'im faffin' about by strand while t'other reds were rakin' through barrels, could be idle like, rum'n, could know where e's coming from. Only 'him 'n God knows.

Neleos
'nother blue 'un, properly casted like- tha knows by 'is looks. Looks of t' devil zzaburs me granda' spake, could be proper though, doesn't know wi' blues. Ne'er seen 'im look 't us proper, most folk notice me looks, 'tis his way must be. 'is garb's a bit big for skipping like, e's so lanky tha'd use him as a mast and 'is coat for sails!

Zarasha
She's fancy for a brown like, tha's how they get though when the'nt proper, all wrong; no offence to thee and tha. Was singin' by strand for yellows I reckon like, t'were like suppin' on honey. She's comely too like, if it weren't for her bein' maddled, I'd suit her! I know some o' t' lads want te. No, come my way and we'd share scran, ne naff, 'appen she'd learn us to sing.

Luc
Ne'er seen so many blues! This 'uns like a marlin, he ain't like t'others all slow and dodderin' like. Spied him take a gander at us browns workin' on dock, never said 'owt but meant no harm nor mither, I say e's good, though I ain't countin' me eggs yet. Tried t' feed 'is mutt mine old scran, t'wouldn't of left 'is side in a thunderstorm at sea.

Daros Trososides
I doesn't speak t' yellows lest they want te. I 'eard 'e talks like a bird though, though most yellows do. I reckon e's the gaffer runnin' this skip, 'e looks the part.

Behold the Bull of Heaven!
Adelbrand the Sober
Outwardly Attitude: He's the closest any of these..."people"...seem to get to the actual Truth of the world. Shows a sliver of respect towards him.

Inward Thoughts: "He is trying to ape our ways, but his failing are so obvious, that he is blind to them. However he might be a potential danger. I might have to eliminate him if he finds out the truth."

Luc
Outwardly Attitude: Barely hidden disdain.

Inward Thoughts: "This barbarous...thing is but a mockery of the Zzaburi! Worse still, he has a book with knowledge of Zzabur himself. I must acquire this, for I can not allow it to be contaminated by his mishandling!"

Dagram the Diligent
Outwardly Attitude: Barely hidden disdain.

Inward Thoughts: "This man is nothing but a bandit! I must make sure he does not jeopardize my research."

Zarasha
Outwardly Attitude: Haughty disinterest.

Inward Thoughts: "There is something about this one. She is hiding something. Have to find what it is, it might be a threat to me."

Taretax
Outwardly Attitude: one of the few people he would actually talk to.

Inward Thoughts: "He is green, must have some of Wearteg's blood in him. He is a good Worker, and he does not seem to be corrupted by the wrong ways of these people, as shown by his skin. I must make sure he keeps to the proper ways, and use him to unlock the secrets hidden in the oceans."

Daros Trososides
Outwardly Attitude: Reserved politeness.

Inward Thoughts: "Nothing but another half-beast trying to claim nobility. Like all of the other "Talar" around here, he seems to think his duty is to rule, not to mediate. Still, he might be useful if he is familiar with the oceans."

Talmakos Tragonid
Outwardly: Obvious disdain.

Inward Thoughts: "This is madness! This thing, this beast claims to follow some revelations of Malkion?! Better make sure he does not try to spread this vile heresy to the others around here, for surely this will cause nothing but chaos, anguish and pain! He must be stopped!"

Tran
Feb 17, 2011

It's a pleasure to meet all of you. Especially in such a fine settin' as this. Just need us some music an' a brawl an' we'll be set.
Talmakos
Ain't such a bad sort, for a nob. Even looks to know how to handle that trophy he wears. 'Course I bet he ain't never been in a real brawl, least of all on a rolling deck. If he's proud as nobs are supposed to be I might be able to win a few trinkets outta' that.

Adelbrand
A big hat and a law botherer, a real barrel of laughs.

Neleos
A real blue one, ain't never seen the like before. 'Course you'd think he's Malkion hisself the way his nose is pointin'. No time for the likes of us.

Zarasha
Don't quite know what to think about that one. Oh she's one of the dronari sure enough, knows how to bow and scrape with the best of 'em. Don't hide that wit of hers none though, she can spin a tale better than an old sea hand earning his drink.

Taretax
The green one, yeah I heard a bit about him from the other hands. Works hard enough for the both of us, and awful luck at dice. Just the sort I'd have a drink with.

Luc
Saints preserve us there's another one! Am I damned to spend the entire trip being sneered or preached at by these holier than thou wizards?

Daros
Rich, greedy, and just a touch ruthless. I like him already.

Friar John

Saint Francis be my speed! how oft to-night
Have my old feet stumbled at graves!
Adelbrand the Knower
"drat those Rokari and their so-called kingdom! They stole my family's home, and now they think to steal our lands in Giraine! I'll die before I bow the knee to that fat barbarian this bastard wizard serves!"

Dagram the "Diligent"
"The Crocodile men are fierce, but a man who doesn't train will find his arm weaker than he remembers come the time of trial. I shall wait and see."

Neleos
"Ancient, dangerous beyond compare. Brithini rarely leave their homes, and it is never a good sign when they do so. Should Giraine hold something that might interest the atheists, I worry that when I come to my lands, there should be something terribly dangerous beneath my feet."

Zarasha
"There is more to her than meets the eye, that is certain. Whether for good or for ill, I don't know."

Taretax
"A solid worker, but he speaks more like a Rokari or Waertagi than a Hrestoli sometimes.
...at least when I can comprehend what he's saying."

Luc
"Another damnable Rokari, but at least this one refuses to bend the knee to the usurpers."

Daros Trososides
"'His' plantation is almost certainly stolen land, but the Quinpolic league is close, and my home far away. The League will be a necessary ally to ensure the usurper fails to capture Giraine, however distasteful their obsession with profit may be."

Down With People
Oct 31, 2012

The child delights in violence.
Talmakos Tragonid
This one was very loose with his names. He's oh-so-proud about his family, his Joy, and so on, and so on. I'm worried that someone will poke him too hard and make all his words pour out! Indeed - maybe I will...

Adelbrand the Sober
Amazing how that one keeps his posture so well when rocking to-and-fro on a boat! I imagine the stick up his rear end helps with that.

Dagram the Diligent
Praise God for creating lazy soldiers! This one could be useful if he's even half as dodgy as he looks.

Neleos
Oh my, this one is even more pompous than the last! These Arolanit types never laugh, never smile and never tip. I could tell this one a thousand more stories and he would not listen.

Taretax
The Workers are friendly and easy with their money, but they think I am their equal. My family (drat their hides) may be dronars, but I court Nobles, and I wear their clothes and drink their wine and feel their rich blood on my fingers. I do not wear my caste so brightly as this one does.

Luc
For a wizard, this one does not seem overly arrogant, and perhaps not so dead from the waist down as the other two. Perhaps he will be an ally, if I approach him just so.

Daros Trososides
This may be of the Quinpolic League, but a merchant worries about keeping his belly fat before anything else. No doubt he will give me aid if it suits him, but I will keep my knives sharp should our relationship grow sour.

Talmakos Tragonid

All the errors of Old Seshnela have been made manifest in this one, neither a wizard nor a noble nor a soldier nor a worker. How do those misguided people manage to survive on their ruined coast? This man’s arrogance and recklessness make him a threat to both himself and those around him; while he is likely beyond saving it is my duty to minimise the damage he can cause.

Dagram the “Diligent”

Another heretic. At least this one does not aspire to be something he is not. But to be so shoddy and negligent about fulfilling one’s own caste duties! Truly the lax attitudes of the Navigationalists are to blame for this. He cannot be relied on; a dull sword is little better than a stick.

Neleos

What is a Brithini zzaburi doing here? He shows some signs of aging, so clearly he is not a true Brithini anymore. Even so, whatever his transgressions, his wisdom and knowledge must be immense. Perhaps there is even something I could learn, though I must be very careful.

Zarasha

I do not know much about entertainers. I suppose it is an acceptable occupation for a worker. But there is something off about this one. She is probably yet another heretic, and in any case might prove an untoward distraction to our settlers. Still, there are greater threats.

Taretax

A much better example of his caste. What a pity it is that such a good worker would grow up among the heretics of the doomed and hopeless Castle Coast, for otherwise I do not doubt for a moment that he would have been a most faithful Rokari. Perhaps it is still not too late. In any case he surely can be relied on for dronari tasks.

Luc

It is good to see a fellow Rokari zzaburi on this voyage, even though life in disloyal Pithdaros, it of many heresies, seems to have taken a slight toll. That simply means I must assist him in persevering on the correct path prescribed by Rokar, if he should ever falter. In the meantime, there are doubtless many topics of great scholarly interest I can discuss with him!

Daros Trososides

Woe be upon those talars who value freedom over loyalty and coin over duty! While not as insane as Talmakos, this man may prove to be more dangerous in the long term, because his is a more cunning and patient sort of corruption, and one supported by the League rather than the decrepit Castle Coast. Would that I had four eyes, so I could watch them both.

---

If any of those seem to have meta-knowledge, do remember that Adelbrand has a sixth sense for lies as a magic talent, however weak and imprecise.

Frankly, Daros thinks you're all horrible people.

Oh, you wanted SPECIFICS?

Talmakos is horrible because of that whole Men of All thing. Daros is Hrestoli, and sure, Hrestol was able to do it, but most people aren't Hrestol. Sure, it sounds good, but it seems like in practice, it gets confusing. Wizards becoming nobles, peasants becoming nobles, all just odd. Besides, he wants land on the island, which is what I want, so there's trouble there.

Adelbrand is just horrible, period. I know Zzaburi, especially Rokari zzaburi, aren't exactly the most easygoing people, but he takes dour to an extreme. And he's Seshnegi. Enough said.

Dagram is a mercenary, and really, you can't trust mercenaries. They're motivated by nothing more than profit. I know, you might think that's hypocritical of me, but I am a patriot...more or less. I want to see the League succeed; I want to see my family succed. Wealth is good, but it's a means to an end.

Neleos is a Brithini, which is just odd, because Brithini don't really leave Arolanit. They're too afraid of corruption. So, what's he doing here? How is he "corrupted"?

Zarasha is an entertainer, and I like entertainers. I'm willing to pay for good entertainment. Still, entertainers tend to know things, for dronari. They get everywhere, and people talk in front of them.

Taretax I don't really know much about, but I'm sure he's horrible. He's got this absurdly rural Castle Coast accent, for one thing.

Luc is another drat blue. The place is rotten with them. Still, he's a member of the League. He just doesn't shut up.

So, they're all horrible people. Doesn't mean I can't work with them. I've worked with horrible people before, some that I was even married to. I'm sure we'll get along great.

Talmakos Tragonid: A Hrestoli heretic from the Castle Coast, and one with a lot of fire in his belly. I'll have to watch this one; at least he's not from the Kingdom.

Adelbrand the Sober: I went on this trip in part to put some space between myself and the more zealous Rokari. It seems at least one will be on the island with me, and this one from the Kingdom. Something peculiar about his zealotry, though; against my better judgement, I should converse with him further to explore this peculiarity.

Dagram the "Diligent": I've never understood the disdain some hold for mercenaries. I find they have a refreshing straight-forwardness. I think I'll get along fine with this one.

Neleos: Wow, judging by pigmentation, garb and demeanour, an actual Brithini. Fascinating! And outside of Arolanit. I wonder what would compel a Brithini to go to Giraine? Whatever it is, it will be nothing trivial or mundane; I must discover what it is ... uh, carefully.

Zarasha: An entertainer is always a welcome diversion, especially a fellow Pithdaran with an accent that reminds me of home. But ... there's something curious about this one I can't quite identify, and it vexes me.

Taretax: Seems a solid, salt-of-the-earth type. I haven't forgotten my dronar beginnings, but some dronars understandably find my caste intimdating. It remains to be seen how I'll get along with this one, but I am hopeful.

Daros Trososides: Seems driven and opportunistic. Perhaps our goals will align to our mutual benefit. Hmmm, and he's a talar from the League; I'll need to watch how I handle him.

In an unforeseen turn of events, The Pithdarosian Peril gives The Dromali Dragon her signature winning move- 'The Virgin's Deception' and he buckles under its pressure, barely withstanding her cold gaze. He looks away in desperation giving her the clear upperhand, her teeth glint maliciously as the determined worker desperately tries to cling on... The Dromali Dragon looks at the appetizers, he seems ready to give up, shrivelling under her relentless assault, but WHAT'S THIS? The stare-off of a century takes a sharp turn to the left as the daring Daros "Try Me" Trososides joins the fray, breaking the snake-like grip the Peril has on the already recovering Dragon as her attention splits; Taretax stares at Zarasha, Zarasha stares at Taretax and newcomer Daros deigns to take on both competitors. Which one of these eclectic trio can call themselves the victor in this exciting dinnertable duel of chance, determination and wit?

What is the point of the temples to the Invisible God? Do people pray to it? If they do, why do they pray? How do they pray?

Tindalos
May 1, 2008
To quote the guide:
"Each community attends regular ceremonies where they provide magical energy to their zzaburi wizard-priests and up through the Rokari hierarchy to the High Watcher. A certain amount is used to maintain the great and complex spells that protect and bless the community. The remainder is used by the High Watcher for his own spells."

Since Giraine lacks even a regular Knower, let alone a Watcher or High Watcher, there's a lot less magic energy being held in the sacred spaces of the temples, and the enchantments are less potent than they would be on the mainland as Rubert is less skilled with his grimoire.

As for the temple itself, from the guide:
"Temples to the Invisible God conform to ancient rules of sacred geometry and represent the macrocosm of the universe as well as the microcosm of inner space.
A temple consists of an inner sanctum where the sacred texts of that Malkioni school are kept, a congregation hall (or halls), and sometimes antechambers and porches. The inner sanctum is crowned by a tower, built to be the tallest structure in the city. Depending on the school, the tower may take the form of a massive watchtower, needle-like spire, conical pyramid, or dome. Temples include dwellings for the wizards attached to it, other buildings for state or convenience, and usually tanks or wells for water (used for sacred purposes or the convenience of the wizards).
Within the parameters allowed by the rules of sacred geometry, there is considerable diversity in temple architectural style. Rokari temples are ornately decorated with arabesque and geometric designs; Hrestoli temples depict mythological events and individuals, and often include small shrines to Ascended Masters."

As I told Tindalos a while earlier, I'll be away from 8th to 22nd of September. And frankly I'm rather busy now, too. So assume that after getting his answers Adelbrand sets out for New Arvonwal with Neleos as was arranged, then is, presumably, kept occupied by Rokari business.

So this, or something like this, is a tale told to Taretax many times by his great-grandfather. Not that Taretax was paying much attention.

The Invisible God became Change to accommodate the first three things- Mind or Daliath- law; Body or Sramake- the material world; and Soul or Framanthe, who is the other world. The three new parts of the Invisible God were intrinsically part of his moving nature and helped to change many things, copulating amongst themselves to produce the Beast, the Plant and various other creations. The Invisible God had changed so much that he became Stillness, but the still moving Mind, Body and Spirit fed off the ideas of Stillness, which created new ideas and revealed the idea Ordelvis whose Potential was so great it enveloped the Invisible God in shadow, changing him once again. From Ordelvis came Bab (Earth, Sky) which separated the worlds and whose actions created all of which we can see above the waters.

Bab came into itself and used the potential inherited from Ordelvis to create Man; and the ideas eaten off the Invisible God to create Man in many forms. The forms bickered and fought amongst themselves and change was needed once again, the Invisible God turned over his Dark self in order to reveal the wisdom of the Invisible God to the bickering Mans and became Dreneelo whom the foreigners call Malkion. Dreneelo endeavoured to reveal the truths of the world. While the Invisible God turned however, parts of him which had been kept in the Darkness were released and both Death and Life became part of the world; this only encouraged more fighting.

When Bab came into itself, one of the forms of Man it created was called Dez, or Humat. Dez was a terrible and wild being who wanted only destruction, even against Bab who had created him. He struck against Bab, splitting it in two and moved into the space between the broken entity causing the anguish of many other creations. Dez continued to attack other beings mercilessly, until Magasta- a creation of Daliath, Framanthe and the newly released Death devoured him whole and settled in the empty space between Bab, soothing its wounds and bringing peace to the world.
