VaultAggie posted:I'm kinda confused by this movie. The other Marvel movies made it seem like all the other worlds in the galaxy were isolated. Like the shiny bridge thing in Thor that allowed them to travel to other worlds. However, this movie seems to make it seem like space travel and such is commonplace and humans are all over the place. I don't know poo poo about the comics but this is throwing me off. Is this set in the same universe as the others? So, those other worlds you've seen so far lie in the Norse mythos type hierarchy posted above. But in our realm there, there's also regular space, as we know it. GotG takes place in other star systems in our galaxy. But anyone you see who looks human in GotG looks that way because comic book writers wanted to do sci-fi and not draw a billion aliens. Other than Chris Pratt, everyone in this film is an alien, even if they look human. Think Galactus/Silver Surfer from Fantastic 4, the Venom symbiote from Spider-Man, or Phoenix from X-Men (not from X-3). In the Marvel universe, there's a ton of scary poo poo in space. Also, what the hell: my local theater listed showings at 7 pm tomorrow, going late, and a show at 12:01. Now I thought, huh, it must open on the 31st for there to be shows at 7 pm, so the 12:01 show must be tonight. Nope. Midnight premieres start at 7 pm now. And Christmas starts before Thanksgiving. Really great, can't wait to get the Blu-Ray and just freeze frame a million times to get everything on their prison eval screens, everything in the Collection, etc. There is so much detail and stuff going on I feel like I missed half the film, Ina good way. A little disappointed with the Collector. He's a more sinister character in the comics. I was confused as to why he would want Groot's body, and then ignore a unique talking raccoon. I kept waiting for him to try and keep them as part of the deal. But there were already enough bad guys to fill the movie. We'll definitely see it again before it leaves theaters.

Oh and apparently Nathan Fillion's cameo that everyone thought would be some awesome hero was as the inmate who wants to lather up Quill and gets tree branches up his nose. I love his wonky cameos like this and the porn-obsessed janitor on Community.

Alright, I'M standing now. You happy? We're all standing now. Standing around. Like jackasses. My favorite Rocket moment, just because of how effectively it makes fun of that type of scene.

Who did you consider the useless bureaucrat? Nova Prime? She came across as a competent leader to me...

morestuff posted:Well, she signs an ultimately pointless treaty, and can't even get the Kree guy to verbally condemn a fringe terrorist. In the battle, the Nova Corps can't stop a single ship and needs to be bailed out by the space pirates. The Corps' main plan is a light net that temporarily holds the ship in place, and it wasn't actually clear to me if that was even her order or Peter Serafinowicz's. Am I forgetting something? I think some of this comes down to the general issues people are having with the plot and exposition for people's motives/backgrounds. The treat isn't pointless if it stops an entire Kree army from raining down in a big war, but we never learn anything about the Kree except for that one conversation, and Ronan, who we basically have no knowledge about. Since we don't know anything about them, we don't know why he won't condemn Ronan. The Nova Corps thing is even more egregious. Not for her particularly, but more, why does a planet that just ended a huge interstellar war only have about 1,000 planet based jet fighters for defense? Where is their armada? They could have milked drama out of her believing the stone was a myth and not immediately believing the threat. Instead she takes the threat seriously but doesn't panic. She evacuates the city, then is rational enough to accept the only help offered, even though it's by criminals, then launches the only forces she has and puts them to the best use she can within the larger plan: give the strike force time to act. Basically I think she's a competent leader in a film that doesn't pay much attention to giving us information about the Universe beyond what's on screen at any given time.

LASTCAR posted:I've been chewing this over since seeing the film earlier today, but I have to say, I still feel pretty mixed about it. I mean, I really enjoyed all the character development and how Star-Lord's crew played off each other. I really felt the characters were more likable and well-developed than in other Marvel films, which is a huge step in the right direction. He was only abducted because his dad paid for him to be because his mom died though. I'm pretty sure. Also, I felt like that scene jibed so well with the rest of the movie in terms of matching drama with comedy. Super sad scene, then he runs out directly into the tractor beam of a space ship. It was so absurd that several people, including me, laughed out loud. It broke the tension in a good way for me.

Also the ship was Murano, not Milano.

Neowyrm posted:No it wasn't you dingus Yes it was, Dingus. "The 76021 LEGO Murano is a very striking, almost bird-like spaceship with an eye-catching blue, yellow and grey color scheme. It’s piloted by the LEGO Gamora minifigure (the sole female member of the Guardians of the Galaxy), and you can see the LEGO Drax the Destroyer minifigure right behind Gamora in the cockpit of the Murano! Drax is, of course, played by WWE Superstar and former World Heavyweight Champion Batista! In addition to the Murano and the LEGO Gamora and LEGO Drax minifigures, the LEGO 76021 Milano Ship Rescue set will also include a very small ship–the Milano–and three more minifigures. One of the minifigures is the leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the first-ever LEGO Starlord minifigure. The LEGO Star Lord figure looks sort of weird at a glance, but I think everyone will warm up to it when they grow accustomed to Star Lord’s appearance (and scary mask) in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The LEGO Milano ship is piloted by a LEGO Sakaaran Soldier minifigure (basically, a generic bad guy)." http://www.bricksandbloks.com/lego-guardians-galaxy-milano-ship-rescue-76021-photos/ There's also a shot at the final battle on Xandar of the ship from the top, the name is on the wing, and it was really clear. Seeing it again this afternoon and I'll confirm it. Riven fucked around with this message at 16:31 on Aug 3, 2014 |

My favorite part of that reading is that it implies at some point Rocket fell in love with someone, got them to fall in love with a mutated/experimented-on raccoon, and then had successful inter-mutated/experimented-on species sex, and had children, that at least lived for awhile to be killed, all in a life that he admits is relatively short-spanned anyways. Or maybe they were step-children. Who knows?

Ok, I'm the dingus. I have no idea now where I got Murano, and it's weird that the Lego thing was wrong too independently. But I was right about Drax not responding to the "give a poo poo" line. It was in direct response to his question, and the "I wasn't listening" was earlier in that scene. I'm writing it off to him understanding that even if he doesn't get it it's probably one of those emotional metaphors the other characters use all the time.

Party Boat posted:Just compare Bale in American Psycho and Batman - while his bulking up for Batman was incredible it's clear that dropping all that weight for the Machinist did long term damage to him. There was an interview with Bale after American Hustle where he talked about regretting the weight for that movie. He has a slipped disc and permanently lost an inch of height. He thought it would take a month or two to lose it after the filming, but it took almost a year and the quote was something like "Oh I'm 40 now..."
