Being 100% up in your own head with those feelings can be problematic as sex leads to babbies sometimes. You could say that emotional intimacy can exist as a practical tool for improving a society. Presumably if a couple's emotions are on the same wavelength, they have a better chance of keeping a family together and having kids who may have a better chance of maximizing their potential as human beings. And other rhetoric. Some cultures seem to work fine with treating the family as a business deal, though nihilism probably isn't good for the kids.

Also wanted to say it's too bad that all media is terrible at portraying relationships, except maybe some music. Even sorta neutral classics like Anna Karenina are still pretty manipulative.
