Gamethread is here: [Atomic Robo]Zookeepers - Badgers? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Badgers!

A Strange History
It began in 1946. Bikini Atoll. Something awoke from the depths to remind men of science that they were only living on the surface of a vast and mysterious world. Quickly and quietly, the powers that be called together the greatest minds of the age to form Taskforce Cronus. Over ten years and nearly two-dozen nuclear weapons later, they deemed the threat to be neutralized, and task force was dissolved.

At least, until the next threat arose.

Over the years, more and more problems popped up, threatening the safety and welfare of mankind. Taskforces like the original Cronus would be formed on an ad hoc basis to deal with whatever the issue was, only to be dissolved immediately afterwards. But as time wore on, the same individuals, experts in their respected fields, would meet again and again to face these threats. Eventually a problem arose that was so significant that they managed to convince their superiors that a permanent, formal agency was necessary to deal with the continuing threat the country and the world faced. The 1980s saw an unprecedented rise in the appearance of Neofauna, prompting the Shell Game investigation. If nothing else, the new organization would be needed to care for all the mutants.

They called it the Applied Zoology and Conservation Service (AZACS), incorporated under the US Division of Fish & Wildlife Service. They currently operate in cooperation with Interpol (Biological Contraband Division) to carry out their mission: To study, to protect, and conserve. Most people call it "The Zoo" and with good reason. Quietly, the government had set up a facility in Wyoming, large enough to contain any live samples that they might acquire. The Safari, as it's known, is the largest national park that you will never visit, and probably the most dangerous. Do you think you have what it takes to be a Zookeeper?

What is This?
This is a game using the Atomic Robo version of the Fate RPG. Instead of taking place in the standard Atomic Robo setting, we will be using one that uses the conceit that monster movies are real, but people generally don't know about it. Most of those films only have one or two survivors anyway, so it's easy to keep that quiet. What the people at the Zoo are most worried about Megafauna and Metrezoological Incidents, which would force them and their work out into the daylight. Sure, they might get a little more of the funding that they badly need, but it could threaten the safety of their agents who are not all human.

While strictly speaking, your job is to deal with strange, animal-related phenomena, the Zoo is often tasked with anything weird that comes up, as it's the designated "Weird" department. Aliens messing with cattle? That's you.

Undercover
You're probably reading this and thinking, "Man, this sounds silly." Yes, that's the idea. You're investigating giant rabbits, chupacabras, and sharktopi, this is by no means meant to be a serious game. You might also be thinking "How is this supposed to be kept secret in the long term?" And no, it's not. I fully anticipate the secret to get out if the game goes on long enough. You can only pay off so many witnesses and smash so many cellphones before Godzilla ends up on Youtube in the scaly flesh.

Who are You?
That's something you're probably asking too--what kind of people work at the Zoo? Well, people is a good, general term, since not all of them are human. Because of the work they engage in, scientists from every field are welcome to join the Zookeepers. Or you could be on loan from Interpol, maybe you want to be here, maybe you made a mistake and someone sent you here as punishment. Then there's the Zoo itself. See, at the Zoo, we don't just kill what we encounter. It's cruel, wasteful, and immoral especially when they're intelligent. So out in Wyoming, there is a compound where many of them live--but not all. Some are Zookeepers.

So there's a few choices: Scientist, Interpol, or HORRIBLE MUTANT, but that's hardly all. Surprise me!

Metre-wha?
I made up some words for this game. HERE THEY ARE ENJOY
Cryptids: Did not make up this word. General term used by people at the Zoo for a strange animal of presumed natural origin. Example: Sasquatch
Neofauna: Animal (intelligent or otherwise) that is the product of rapid evolution, mutation, or intentional creation. Example: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Megafauna: Did not make up this word either. Giant version of a normal animal--or some animal that is just MASSIVE. Examples: Night of the Lepus, Godzilla
Metrezoological Phenomena: Weather patterns that incorporate animals. Examples: Rains of Toads

Other bits
Need me? Hit me up in IRC in #fowlplay. People who loiter there may be more likely to get picked. Probably taking six or less. When I'm going to close recruitment, I'll give a minimum of 24 hours notice, almost certainly more. I just don't want to give a hard deadline before I can judge interest.

Not entirely sure what else to say. Imagine an Atomic Robo game but with an emphasis on monsters (more Godzilla and Creature from the Black Lagoon, less Wolfman and Dracula). Your organization is the Zoo rather than Tesladyne, obviously.

How open are you to a pbp newbie in this group? In my 10+ years roleplaying i never played in a PbP game before, but since my regular group is meeting less and less frequently i'm curious about trying it.

Is the Atomic Robo book necessary? I own lots of Fate books and ebooks but not this specific one.

My Timezone is UTC+1, with lots of posting time in the evening and less so through the day, if that matters. (And I'm not no native english speaker)

First Draft!

Johnny 'Nox' Stone

Concept: Demoted Supersoldier
Johnny got transfered to the Zoo for acting more like an Action Hero than a serious Special Forces Opperative.
Invoke: To do Combatstuff, knowledge of militar structures or impersonating his drill sergeant to intimidate people.
Compel: To make him act reckless or provoke him.

Action: "Who needs a plan?"
He has a tendency to jump straight into action, with little regard for consquences. Also he has a talent to somehow make those situations work, or at least survive them ...
Invoke: To benefit/succeed in a chaotic planless situation.
Compel: To jump straight into action and annoy superiors.

Charm: Flirts with everything that moves
Self-explanatory.
Invoke: To succeed in doing so or to have weird insight into the minds of others.
Compel: To do so, or to refuse to harm a particlar flirt-worthy opponent.

Omega: "But you have heard of me!"
His antics got him a reputation. Depending on who's story you heard it's a good or a bad one.
Invoke: To have someone heard the good side of stories about him.
Compel: To have someone heard the bad side of stories about him.

Special Forces: Unshakeable Confidence
Johnnys talent gives him a supersized ego. He can rely on that to power through situations, but it can also annoy others around it.
Invoke: To defend against social attacks, resists fear or intimidation.
Compel: Annoy others through his occasional insufferable smugness/arrogance. (I guess this will mostly be selfcompelled) To underestimate a situation

Fair Mode: Action

Skills
+5 Athletics, Combat
+4 Notice, Physique, Stealth
+3 Provoke, Rapport
+2 Vehicles
+1 Contacts, Will

Stunts: work in progress
Slippery Combatant: +1 Athletics for Defense
Prodigy of the Gun: +2 Combat for attacking with a ranged Weapon
Signature Aspect: Demoted Supersoldier - looking for a better name
I'll Take You All On: +2 Athletics for Defense when outnumbered
All Girls Want Bad Boys: +2 on Rapport for Flirting

Stress
Physical: [][][][][]
Mental: [][]

Personality:
While it might seem like Johnny is only an insufferable jerk, this is mostly superficial.
He is also a very humerous person, who tries to defuse tense situations with humor and cheerfulness (and terrible puns).
I'm aiming more for a facepalm-annoying than a "I want to murder that guy"-annoying.
Furthermore he is deeply loyal and will be very protective of his teammembers, espescially fragile seeming ones like Aoi.

Feedback is welcome!

PBP isn't hard to pick up, it's just a style. Rather than sitting around a table, the players and the gm write narrative posts that compose the story of the game. Posting is expected on certain intervals, and it's usually not too demanding. This definitely won't be.

The book is important, as it has character creation rules that vary from Fate Core. If getting the book is an issue, I strongly suggest joining me in IRC. Room is #fowlplay, server is synirc.

Well, recruitment is going to last at least a week, so there is that. Also, similar to cybertier's issue--if you know Fate Core, Atomic Robo isn't hard. Mostly, it's an alternative to the skill pyramid, plus some fun other bits, like brainstorming, megastunts, and such.

“Let me tell ‘bout how I got here. You’ll love it, I garontee.”

“So I’m out hunting all by lonesome, just waiting for the right moment for a squirrel ta’ show up. That’s when I hear something loud, not like nothing I ever heard in my whole life. Now it’s a good thing I had some real nice camouflage on, ‘cause what I saw passin’ by afta I hear that was some sorta crazy fish monsta. I figure it come from the lake, cause sure as sugar that thing weren’t no land creature.”

“But I ain’t no coward, and the one thing I like more than huntin’ is cookin’. So what I’m gonna do is catch this thing and try ta’ somethin’ nice outta it. Now I went on this trip ta’ hunt squirrels, not mutant fish monstas, so I’m not too sure what I’m got is good. So’s I spend a couple days just watchin’ it go ‘round the forest. I see’s what it does, where it goes, and how it survives. Turns out it needs ta’ go back inta’ the lake to rehydrate every eight or so hours. So the last time it leaves, I set up this big ol’ trap for it. I pull out everythin’ I got ta’ work wit’. So it came into thetrap, and I pulled the rope, and it get wrapped up six ways. Now I hadn’t figgered out where da right right organs are, so I’s just put a nice shot in the head. I takes a photo o’ myself wit’ it, chop it up real careful, put it in some coola’s I got, and head on back to Baton Rouge.”

“Now catchin’ an’ killin’ the thing’s easy enough. It’s a whole other thing ta cook it, but it ain’t so bad, cause that’s the fun part. I’m real careful wit’ tha’ organs, make sure I ain’t eaitn’ poision sacs. Thankfully, the whole things basicly like a fish with bigger bones, so I experiment with fish dishes. I made fillets, I fried, I baked, I made pies, gumbo, fishballs, fishcakes, just a little bit o’ everythin’ I can think of. Once I used up the whole thing, and believe me, it was a big ol’ thing, I invite the friends and the family over for a big ol’ dinner. They loved the whole thing, and you’d love it too, I garontee. Course, they were a bit scared after when I told them they’d been eatin’ fishman. But I think they took it well enough. Mostly.”

“Couple days latah’ some guys from the guv’ment come ova. They questioned me, so I tell ‘em the whole story, just like I’m tellin’ you right now. They’s real impressed by what I gots ta’ say, specially the part ‘bout hunting it down, so they tell me their side of the story. Turns out, thing’s like this been going on everywhere and they’s been trying to cover it up. Originally, they were gonna just get me to shut my mouth about it, but now they’s interested in my skills. So we strike up a deal: I help out at this here zoo, and I get to cook some o’ what I kill. Course, I can’t kill everything, else the eggheads won’t have nothin’ to work with. Course, soon enough, I’m also helpin’ out the eggheads figure out monster anatomy, and helpin’ out at the cafeteria, cause this guv’ment food ain’t really all that up to snuff.”

“So quit your squirmin’ an’ eat that sea monster gumbo. It’s good, and it’s good for you.”

Project Relentless Pursuer, Designation Neofauna Canis Lupus Superior - 01866. "Huscarl"

Mission briefing, Operation Walkies

To the recipient of this message, everything on this document is for your eyes only

If you are reading this, you have chosen, or been chosen, to be responsible for the care, and transportation, of one of the Zoo's more specialty members and investments, Project Relentless Pursuer, unofficially nicknamed 'Huscarl'.

Huscarl is a specially bred McNab Herding Dog, uplifted through unknown circumstances on the Isle of Man. When the facility located him, he was a puppy within a cryo storage container of unknown origin, and during tests it was found the subject had comparable human intelligence. After he was provided with extensive training and genetic enhancement here at the facility , he has become a valuable member of our team.

Huscarl's role in the Zoo is the herding, hunting, and nonlethal incapacitation of Neofauna present on the grounds of the Zoo, and outside of it. However, despite the considerable abilities, and intelligence of Huscarl, he is still a dog, and still will need a human to assist in tasks that require the use of opposable thumbs. This is where you come in.

Your mission, is to ensure the well-being, and care of Project Relentless Pursuer, ensure that his requests are understand, and that he is fed often and exercised regularly. Sign paper work, open doors he cannot open, deal with any 'leavings' and accompany him on ranging assignments. You will be provided a military jeep for this circumstance, ensure that Huscarl is unharmed, and that he remains on the mission. Note that due to the circumstances of some Neofauna within the facility, we cannot guarantee your safety during this assignment.

We wish you the best of luck, and recommend that you scratch behind his ears. The subject responds in a very positive manner when scratched behind his ears.

quote:

Concept: Genetically Perfect Super Hunting Dog
Huscarl knows one thing, and that is hunting gribblies for his owner. It very much helps that Huscarl has been genetically enhanced for this particular role to the point where he is one of the best suited for it, in a four legged package. It's hard to pretend to be a normal dog when you are a super dog.

Good Mode Aspect: Shock and Aww
Huscarl is cute, very cute. Huscarl also works best with the element of surprise and a good run up to put the 'Shock' into 'Shockingly Violent Assault'. It doesn't quite work if they see you coming though.

Fair Mode Aspect: "Who's a good boy!"
When Man-Beasts praise Huscarl, it makes Huscarl very happy. Huscarl will try and make sure Man-Beasts give praise often. Getting not praise feels bad.

Average Mode Aspect: The Very Model Of A Modern Major Hunting Dog
It's one part genetics and one part natural talent, why else would he be so perfect? Falls a little flat when he is, not so perfect but what can you do?

Omega Aspect: Still Just a Dog
Unfortunately, no matter how good he may be at his Job, Huscarl is still a dog. He still needs people to open doors for him, feed him, take him where he needs to be, and that makes it a little difficult to be taken seriously at times. Trying to be treated as an equal is hard when you can't speak Humanise.

Good Mode +3: Super Hunter (Athletics, Tooth and Claw, Notice, Physique, Stealth, Will) 10 Points
Fair Mode +2: Doggy (Empathy, Provoke, Rapport, Will, Notice) 7 Points
Average Mode +1: Genetics (Athletics, Notice, Physique) 4 Points

Focused: Empathy +1 (2 points)
Specialized: Tooth and Claw +2 (3 Points)

4 points remaining.

Skills:
+5: Notice, Tooth and Claw.
+4: Will, Physique, Athletics.
+3: Stealth, Empathy.
+2: Provoke, Rapport.
+1: -

Stress:
Physical: 0000
Mental: 000

Stunts:

"What is it Huscarl?": Can use Rapport to non-verbally communicate your intentions or desires to anyone nearby.

Naturally Bred Herder: Can use Provoke to redirect a target or group of animal's movement.

Reinforced Musculature: +1 to Athletics or Physique when exerting yourself heavily, Armour: 1

The Nose Knows It's Nosy: +2 to Notice when tracking or searching for something by smell.

The Most Dangerous Game MEGASTUNT (3 Benefits)
The Bigger They Are: +2 to Tooth and Claw when against enemies much bigger then you.
Crashing Wave Throw: +2 to Tooth and Claw when attempting to create an advantage involving knocking down or pinning an opponent.
The Wild Hunt: Absolutely able to overcome obstacles when pursuing something (Athletics), but will absolutely be shut down by Bacon.

Weird Skills:

Tooth and Claw - As it is in the book, page 87.

All this interest is really encouraging--though I am worried that by mentioning the possibility of mutants and cryptids everybody's going to app sasquatches and ninja turtles and super-smart dogs (which I have no problem with, by the way, more in-depth feedback once more sheets are in). We need scientists and Interpol/cop/military dudes too!

Though if that scenario did happen, your team would need a special name. Like the Dogcatchers.

Name: Aoi Hoshino

Aoi is certainly not shy about sharing her background! She grew up in Japan, on a small island off the coast of Kyushu that you probably don't know about even if you know where Kyushu is. It was an unremarkable childhood... if you don't consider that this tiny island had a ridiculously high number of strange creatures in it. Aoi certainly thinks it's unremarkable since, as she points out, everybody is so concerned about the huge kaiju that nobody ever pays attention to the tiny ones.

... not that she can't understand WHY, because the huge ones are freaking amazing. She saw her first one when she was only a young teenager. Years later, The Zoo found her on the sea, having chased a sea serpent down several miles on a fast boat until she ran out of gas. Whoops.

As it turned out, Aoi turned out to be pretty good at understanding the behavior of the monsters that the Zoo was dealing with at all times. She impressed her eventual superiors with a plan that led to the sea serpent being captured (involving lots and lots of fish). She impressed them less when she asked if she could keep "Hessie".

Still, you have to be a LITTLE bit crazy to be on this job, and she actually LIKES dealing with the things, so...

Hessie the Sea Serpent resides in The Safari now. Aoi visits her when she can.

Concept: The Kaiju Whisperer
For whatever reason, Aoi can built some real rapport with the weird creatures that live in the Safari. The smarter ones may even like her. The dumber ones may like her as long as food isn't scarce.
Invoke: Hey! Put That Truck Down! - Feeding them is all about knowing how!
Compel: I can figure out what's wrong with more time! - Of course I like it more than I do you.

Omega: Eye of the Storm
Aoi is blissfully optimistic and cheerful, moving forward with purpose and the knowledge that she's doing a great thing! Unfortunately this tends to place her in dangerous situations pretty often. She's rather oblivious about it.
Invoke: Trouble? What Trouble? - Everything will be just fine!
Compel: Jump cheerfully into danger! - Whoops.

Science Aspect: Dangerous? No way!
Aoi is convinced most monsters are just big puppies that enjoy a good scratch now and then. Surprisingly, and in many cases, she's right. Now if she didn't have to put herself in mortal danger to prove it...
Invoke: Don't stare it in the eyes! It will make it angry! - If her scales turn blue, she's content!
Compel: Aww, ain't it cute? - Oh boy, look at those teeth!

Banter Aspect: Don't shoot!
Certainly, violence is sometimes the answer when it comes down to dealing with monsters, but that doesn't mean it's what's right! Besides, guns just tend to make them angrier.
Invoke: I'm sure we can solve this peacefully! - My way involves less property damage! ... Maybe!
Compel: Stop it! You are hurting him! - I'm against this plan!

Intrigue Aspect: Gotta know when to run!
SOME monsters are just mean ol' sacks of teeth and Aoi has gotten pretty good at knowing when the time to bail has come. Of course, it's fully possible she may have misread the signs...
Invoke: Ah, its about to breath fire! - Yes, it CAN see you if you stand still!
Compel: I... think... this is getting bad. - Oh... you are not supposed to show them your backs...

Good Mode: Science
Fair Mode: Banter
Average Mode: Intrigue

I'm excited by the sheets so far!

Here's some junk about the world that's subject to change if I wake up in the morning and don't like it.

AZACS Personnel Files 00001 – Director Cumberland

Dr. Harold Cumberland has been the single constant in the program since its inception back in the Taskforce Cronus days. This is largely thanks to his peculiar longevity, the apparent result of his involvement in the Manhattan project. Though he appears to be around fifty, he’s in fact well into his nineties—but this has neither dampened his curiosity nor the love for the natural (and, at times, unnatural) world that he fell into following the war. A warm, fatherly type of man, if not the greatest man in a live-fire situation. However, you can bet that afterwards, he’ll have some candy in his pockets if you want something to calm you down. His managerial style involves the two drawer system—each with treats. However, only one is meant for human consumption. Good employees get the cookie. But sometimes he forgets and you get the bad treat. Even when you’ve been a good zookeeper. Well, he’s an old, mildly to moderately radioactive man. Give him a break.

AZACS Personnel Files 17376 – Interpol Liaison Jacqueline Rousseau

Her official title is “Special Regional Sub-Director – Biological Contraband Division”. Her off-kilter smile is the face of security here at the Zoo and if you’re holding a gun, then she’s either your boss, or your boss’s boss. Rumor have circulated around the Safari, as rumors do, about how this obviously competent woman got transferred from Interpol HQ in her native France to such a poo poo posting. Well keep on wondering! She seems to pay the change of venue no mind and takes a strange, almost childlike thrill to the affair on the rare occasions when she can make an excuse to go out into the field to tackle a Sasquatch.

AZACS Personnel Files 00003 – Scrubby, the Janitor

He’s the janitor. He also makes much, much more than you. Lucky, poo poo-shoveling bastard.

AZACS Terminal => Directory => ANZACS Wyoming Research Facility and Wildlife Preserve “The Safari”

The Safari is a massive swath of Wyoming fenced off by the US government in the 1980s. The size serves two purposes: The first is to keep prying eyes as far from the actual facilities as possible. The second is to allow for the best possible environment to be created for any specimens that are kept for long term study. The Safari refers to both the ANZACS research lab and the surrounding wildlife enclosures. The lab goes deep underground, allowing for the containment of more dangerous specimens and so that Zoo scientists may perform whatever experiments they feel necessary with the comfort that the best biological containment protocols built by the lowest bidder can provide.

AZACS Terminal => Directory => ANZACS Wyoming Research Facility and Wildlife Preserve “The Safari” => Zone Golf-3 “The Petting Zoo”

This is the affectionate term given by the staff to the more gentle megafauna contained in Zone Golf-3. Golf-3 is home mostly to domestic animals that, by accident or unknown agents, have become extremely large and generally confused by this state of affairs, but no less affectionate for it. Time in Golf-3 is typically given as a reward to Zookeeping teams that perform satisfactorily. Petting giant fluffy rabbits has been shown to improve team morale and effectiveness.

Z Files “Sasquatch”

North America’s largest native primate has been something of an open secret for decades. In fact, the only thing that’s kept them from coming fully out into the open are Mock-Bears (bears who prefer to walk on two legs and are often confused for the majestic Saquatch) and the constant diplomatic balancing act that Director Cumberland has going between the Sasquatch President, the Skunk Ape Premier, and the Grand Poobah of all Mock-Bears. Otherwise, tomorrow they’d be digging through our garbage, and next week they’d be emptying our fridges. Freeloading bastards.

Z Files “Sparky”

Sparky is, to all appearances, a dragon straight out of medieval lore. He has wings like a bat, a lupine head, and a serpentine body with vicious claws. Currently, he weighs about forty pounds and is about the size of a large, fire-breathing dog. Since the discovery of his egg at an archaeological dig back in the 80s, he’s become something of a mascot for the Zoo, in addition to giving the staff possible clues as to the origins of the creature at the center of Taskforce Cronus. Sparky’s nest was irradiated by nuclear tests but the area had since cooled—however the egg had absorbed the radiation, even reducing background radiation to nil. It’s believed that either his species has a very long growth cycle or he requires a significant amount of radioactive material to continue his growth. Despite numerous requisitions and grant proposals, it appears that the current plan is to wait and see.

Some general, but important stuff for those wanting to submit a character:
For your modes, please note which skills have been focused or specialized. It's good bookeeping.
I'm fond of the practice of provide sample invokes and compels for Aspects. For example, if you're a Hot-Shot Fighter Pilot, you might invoke that aspect to pull a cool stunt that shakes pursuing fighters off your tail. Conversely, it might be compelled to so that you tend towards recklessness, pulling a dangerous stunt at an inappropriate time for example.
Some of your backstories could use a little filling out. Just a few important questions that need answering: Where are you from? Why are you the most qualified person to be chasing down horrible monsters/How did you get stuck chasing down HORRIBLE MONSTERS?

Sell me you characters as best you can.

Yes!
I finally understand everything there is to know about axes!
Doc Croc
Also known as Doctor Arjistani.

India is the site of great progress and development, but with any nation rapidly transitioning from undeveloped to a modern nation there is an ugly dirty side to it. In India there was a great disparity between the wealthy and the poor, exacerbated by a lack of education. Roughly twelve years ago one group of researchers decided to run an experiment where they installed computers in slum areas connected to the internet. They did not explain to the locals how to use them, and installed observation equipment to see how the children would react. Their results were of a minor curiosity, for they saw that children in the areas came together and intuitively learned how to use the computer and navigate the internet. However they found after a couple of weeks that there were activity logs late at night when most people should be asleep. One researcher in idle curiosity stayed up and turned on the cameras to watch which children were coming out late at night to use the computer. What they found resulted in the seizure of their records and the suspension of the program by the oversight of AZACS.

Crocodylinae Sapiens is the classification of the species to which the self styled 'Doc Croc' belongs to. It is unknown at the present time if he is a singular mutation, unique in his genome, or separated at birth from other members of his species. He possesses an intellect that ranks very highly among humans and bipedal toolworking adaptations; namely prehensile manipulator claws. His exact age is unknown, but estimates based on his own memories and examinations of his biology estimate he is currently around the early twenties. When given a chance to learn and exercise himself with intellectual equals Doc Croc was reasonably content to exist within the confines of the Zoo. Although his internet usage is generally strictly monitored and was originally carefully censored, he has used it to educate himself on a wide variety of topics but specialising in advanced genetics and genetic engineering. His goal to either locate or create a mate to continue his species is not a great secret. When communicating with other members of the scientific community, or the outside world in general Doc Croc uses the assumed name of Doctor Arjistani.

Despite his ability to walk, talk (with a noticeable voice distortion) and use any sort of modern device except for some capacitive touch screens Doc Croc is not mentally like a human. He does not have a great deal of empathy and approaches social interactions with a cold detachment. This results in him acting in very chilling sociopathic manners. Despite being an evolved predator he does not exhibit concerning aggressive behaviours towards humans or other inhabitants of the zoo. However in many conflict situations it will be the knowledge of the repercussions of unnecessarily harming a human or non-human sapient or megafauna that will cause him pause, and not any moral judgements or inhibitions. His strong and resilient body, and knowledge of genetics makes him a potential valuable field agent in certain cases but it is deemed he must be accompanied by a handler and any direct interaction with civilians and anyone without clearance must be avoided at all costs.

The scent of human blood is intriguing to Doc Croc, but he is kept quite happy with a varied diet of animal flesh and seafood. All raw.

Concept: This Doc is a Croc!
Invoke: Because he is tough, strong, reptilian and also a doctor of Genetics.
Compel: Because he is a reptile, vulnerable to the cold and this is also not a boon in getting peer reviews

Stunts: SIGNATURE ASPECT: This Doc is a Croc!

Mode: The modern prehistoric throwback
Invoke: If knowing things about modern life and history is useful, as well as when strong survival instincts would be a boon.
Compel: If he doesn't understand things about modern humans and ethics despite knowing of them, and for those times his instincts might begin to become too strong and a hindrance.

(Dinosaur) Reptile +3
Athletics (R), Tooth and Claw, Notice (Rx2), Physique

Stunts: Amphibian, Blood Scent, Steel Crushing Jaws

Mode: Sometimes you gotta break a few beakers to cook up science!
Invoke: When he needs to know about science, or do science without facilities, equipment or even sterilisation.
Compel: When he is arrogant, reckless or tries to smooth over his mistakes which definitely won't bite him or others in the rear end later.

Science! +2
Genetics, (Sciences), Notice, Will

Stunts: Weird Kin

Mode: Crocodile tears and your darkest fears
Invoke: Because he is cold, calculating, more than somewhat amoral in a reptilian manner. Also because he is at least somewhat stealthy or devious when he needs to be.
Compel: Because those traits that make a good spy in fiction can also make a good sociopath and members of another species are not normally renowned for their deep and insightful empathy for humans.

Intrigue! +1
Athletics, Burglary, Contacts, Deceive, Notice, Stealth

Omega: It's not easy being (the only one) green
Invoke: When he's self sufficient, emotionally resilient and also for taking advantage of his unique status and existence.
Compel: When he's lonely because there's no one else like him, and when he acts out on his own because crocodiles are not normally pack or herd creatures.

Skills

+5: Notice
+4: Athletics, Genetics, Tooth and Claw
+3: Deceive, Physique
+2: Sciences, Stealth, Will
+1: Burglary, Contacts

(Everyone: Focus one skill, Science!: Specialise one skill, Dinosaur: Focus one skill, specialise one skill)
(Total: 2x Focus, 2x Specialise)

Stunts:

Amphibian: +2 to Athletics when swimming.
Blood Scent: Even when unable to see still know the location of objects that emit a scent.
This Doc is a Croc! Signature Aspect stunt.
Steel Crushing Jaws (Mega): Weapon +2 on Tooth and Claw, Absolute Physique but weak to the cold.
Weird Kin: +2 to Genetics when dealing with Neofauna genetics

cool but crude
Points: 27/30

Name: Kowalski

Kowalski had always been an underachiever. Putting to much effort into thing just lead to people having expectation about you and that just lead to stress. If you kept your head low but your ears open on the other hand, you could lead the easy life. After graduating highschool with an unimpressive diploma, he sought out the largest employer in town, for what he hoped to a boring, but steady paycheck. He was a little surprised when his backstory was vetted so thoroughly that even his grand cousin was questioned, but . He was found to be the perfect employee, as he was considered too uninteresting to ever catch the eye of any spy agency anywhere.

Over the next years, Kowalski proofed himself to be the perfect janitor for the Zoo. Unassuming, but eager, he cleaned and fixed his way through the secret history of the world, the crisis and the breakthroughs, always in the background. The scientific staff could rely on him to provide the gum and WD40 necessary to keep the complex machinery of the facility running at critical times and even some cryptids grew accustomed the screwy man in the orange jumpsuit who cleaned up after them.

Despite the lack of an official degree, Kowalski was quick on the uptake, picking up facts here and there over the years, fixing machinery with a quick work-arounds and being able to provide a practical perspective on the everyday problems of cryptozoology. Eventually, the department began to see him rear end an asset, if an unofficial one. Certainly, a janitor couldn't be sent on a missions in an official capacity, but every away team could need someone for a custodial emergency crisis on their team from time to time.

High Concept: Almighty Janitor

When you want the real scoop about a facility, talk to the staff, the people who work behind the scenes. The cleaners, the cooks, the people who change the light bulbs and scrub the floors. If you work to keep something running smoothly, you learn the ins and outs, the little quirks that escape the occasional. And if that something happens to be a top secret government facility for the detentions and study of extraordinary creatures, the accumulated knowledge can cover a large variety of subjects. Need to change a fuse in the extradimensional projector, clean out the Crorillapuss stables, find the way to the lab for Invisible Studies or want to know what exactly the lunch meat was? Search no further than the custodial staff!

Omega: Yo, mind if I take one?

What good are pockets if you don't use them? And if you come across so many interesting places and objects, surely nobody would ind if you take a view things, especially if you ask nicely. Who knows when they will come in handy?

Custodial Duties Aspect: Nobody notices the man with a broom

One truth of the universe is, there will always be litter. Or dust. Or blood and blood-like substances. And certainly, you can't expect the smart men and women with their fancy degrees to clean up after themselves, no matter how secure the facility is and how many background checks you need to work here. And certainly you can't expect the important people to recognize and pay attention to all these service people when there are so many important things to be done. The important point is that the trash is empty and the toilet paper replaced at the end of the day.

Science Aspect: I picked up a thing or two in my time.

A janitor's duty can extend to pretty much everything, from cleaning up acidic vomit to fixing the loose wire in the cross dimensional transporter. And where others are on a temporary assignment , the janitor often works for years and years in the same department. Eventually, you just start accumulating knowledge about the things surrounding you.

Banter Aspect: I read the (yellow) papers.

Everyone likes to gossip from time to time, be it about the latest escapades of celebrities or the secrets of Dimension X.

Of course, I am an expert in this field: If you encounter an expert in something and as long as they are unaware of your true identity, you can use Deceive to fake your expertise in their field.

Cajun Cryptid Hunter who looks vaguely like Mitch McConnell? What's not to love. You may be mistaken about how the Science skill works. It's Science in the movie sense--If you have Science +2 you have Robotics +2, Meteorology +2, Medicine +2, etc and then you add specialties. You don't need to have Science in more than one mode--unless you want to reinforce it, I guess, but this guy doesn't seem like a polymath.

Other stuff: you sure you want a hunter without Athletics? If you want a Survival skill, it doesn't have to be Science, we can just make one--they've got rules for it, how cool is that!

Your stunt, Retrovirus--are you missing something? It just reads "Overcome biological obstacles if I have access to a lab beforehand". It's assumed that you can overcome these obstacles with your knowledge and equipment. So a stunt like this would either: offer a +2 bonus in this situation or allow you to overcome the obstacle in unusual circumstance (i.e. MacGyver-style using a thermos, moldy bread, and a turkey baster full of Red Bull).

Other than that, it's a good entry!

Andre Munson

Agent Andre Munson, Interpol, is one of Sub-Director Rousseau's best men. He's friendly, if perhaps a little too flirty at times, he's smart and he's exceptionally good at getting the public to accept a lie in place of giant monsters. He loves his job and he gets on well with his coworkers. He's not, perhaps, the most scientifically capable of the team...but someone has to keep the eggheads in line. In the field he's an excellent asset, capable with many weapons and fighting techniques. Plus, he seems to practically unkillable - he's recovered from injuries that should have killed him at least once.

Everyone wants to know how he does it, and when asked, Andre just grins and waves it off as a mix of luck, skill and good teamwork.

And that's true, to an extent. But Andre Munson has a secret. A secret he wants to ensure people never learn if he can help it. Andre Munson is a secret cryptid.

Specifically, he's a troll. His file says he's of Scandinavian descent, which is true enough. What it doesn't say - what only the Sub-Director and a few of his closest friends know - is that when he gets truly angry or is about to die, his body changes. Trolls can pass for human most of the time - they're a subspecies, after all. But in wrath or self-preservation, their transformation kicks in. They inspired legends of Cu Chullain, of Grendel and more. They twist, grow and become immense beasts of war. Combine that with an ability to regrow their own body parts rapidly when given proper caloric intake, and you get...well, the perfect Zoo agent.

But it's really very, very embarrassing even at best, and Andre's always felt ashamed of his more monstrous side. He keeps his anger tightly controlled if he can help it, and he avoids mentioning his "condition" at all times. He doesn't want his coworkers to see him as a monster, after all, or as some kind of inhuman predator. He wants them to see him as...well, the irreverent, flirtatious and skilled Interpol agent he presents himself as.

High Concept: Secret Agent Troll
USE TO: Break into places, be shockingly tanky, be James Bond
COMPEL TO: Have an inconvenient proof of trollhood show up, have an enemy remember him being James Bond

Banter: Well Hello There...
USE TO: Engage the flirtation engines, chat someone up, convince someone to switch sides
COMPEL TO: Get distracted by a pretty face, be paying attention to the wrong person, get betrayed by someone he was flirting or involved with

Secret Agent: No Such Agency
USE TO: Lie like a dog, convince people that nothing is weird around here, be an MIB

Dr. Elena Starkweather

“How I got like this? Funny story. So the CDC's got me down in Florida to investigate this whole bath salts thing. Yeah, it was less of a hoax than we thought, kind of embarrassing. Anyway, one of the test subjects wasn't as dead as he could have been and bit me. I managed to create a partial cure to keep myself from murdering my colleagues and I kept working, though it was pretty scary when I thought they were going to blow my head off anyway!”

Subject laughs.

“Well, we took care of it. Obviously. But the full cure doesn't work when the disease is this far advanced. It's pretty inconvenient, I lost my old job, I have to live here on the compound and eat my body weight in meat, but it isn't all bad! I'm able to help people, there's lots to do, my research has progressed by miles and I've met all sorts of interesting folks! Still, it'd be nice to go home once in a while.”

quote:

Concept: House of the Dead, MD
Dr. Starkweather has spent her life working on the front lines of every major pandemic and outbreak in the last 5 years, so it was only a matter of time before she came down with something. “Something” in this case turned out to be 16854GB, colloquially known as the Rage Virus.

Zombie: Re: Your Brains(*)
There's no getting around it: she's a zombie. Well, more of a ghoul. Her metabolic process has excellence dramatically and she's suffered enough physical mutations that she may qualify as a separate subspecies. She can keep her hunger in check, but employment opportunities are limited.

Science: Universal Health Care
The Zoo houses numerous people in close quarters, and disease is a natural consequence of that. And when your tenants are as.... diverse as the Zoo's, established medical treatments aren't good enough. Since she has a doctorate and can't leave, Elena takes care of the other residents, as well as whatever strange diseases the field agents bring back with them this time.

Banter: Uncommon Courtesy
Extra-dimensional horror who cannot be described? Elena will give them directions back to their terrifying plane of existence. Giant mutated lizard from the bottom of the sea? She will try to find a way to communicate with it. Ravenous predator hungry for the flesh of man? Well who hasn't thought about eating their co-workers right? Regardless of who she's talking to, Elena is unfailingly polite.

Omega: Mundane Expatriate
Elena thinks fondly of a time when she didn't have to lie to all her friends and family, or live in Wyoming. While intellectually she understands the necessity of the Zoo (at least in her case), it's becoming harder and harder to accept.

...how does that work?
Spacebot

It's a quirk of fate that Spacebot even ended up on Earth. But then again a whole planet crashing into you out of nowhere will do that to any spare-faring sentient automaton. Ending up embedded in a frozen hunk of Siberia, it would have been normal to expect a rapid recovery within a week or so. But these Earthans were not up to speed on that sort of thing, leaving Spacebot to stay stuck down the bottom of a hole for many years. But one must not worry for Spacebot, there was plenty to do. A lot of that time was taken up by the burgeoning colony of moss that grew on the outer shell of Spacebot, over the decades evolving from the stone age, to the renaissance, the nuclear age and then back to the stone age. Spacebot was not a very good god, it turned out.

Bit it's a good thing that the mosses had grown! Because while the Soviet expedition team that finally came in the 50's weren't too thrilled to have found a massive talking thing from space stuck in a hole, they were super excited to hear about the moss observations. So Spacebot was finally hauled up out of the hole and strapped on a train bound for Moscow. This was the start of Spacebot's career as the secret Soviet weapon in the space race against the Americans!!

(And the moss race, but that one is classified.)

Spacebot really didn't have much of an idea what the Cold War was about, and really just wanted to help out. The Soviet Union's unprecedented growth and prosperity during the 60's and early 70's was in large part down to Spacebot helping out! Which naturally meant that Spacebot was too big for those spaceshoes and had to be gotten rid of. Surviving atmospheric entry is no easy feat though, and small arms fire did little to hurt the monolith from beyond the stars. It was really the mean, hurtful language Brezhnev used that got to Spacebot. And it was only later that year that Spacebot defected to the USA.

This was a coup! The Soviet Secret Weapon was now in the hands of American scientists, there was no limit to what they could do with this advanced space technology! There were demands for Spacebot from everywhere! Area 51 wanted everything Spacebot knew on alien life, including what they had hidden on base! NASA wanted help shoring up their own space program and get square with the Soviets! Nobody was even remotely interested in talking about moss! But over time it was discovered that Spacebot had given up most near everything to the Soviet by this point. Sure, it helped out scientists to give them a level playing field and all, but there were no revolutionary space breakthroughs to be had anymore. By being so helpful, Spacebot only managed to help the once wondrous robot out of a job.

Spacebot also crashed Skylab. And caused Three Mile Island. By accident. If you listen to Spacebot even bigger disasters were prevented by the quick action that certain robots took. But nobody listens to Spacebot. Not anymore.

So now Spacebot is in the Zoo, the end of the line for huge, weird things nobody wants to deal with anymore. But unless it's from explosive reentry, nothing keeps Spacebot down! There were still plenty of things to help with at the Zoo! Things only a might machine from Mars can do! Not technically being 'alive' was a huge boon when dealing with flesh eating monsters, and when eaten could just climb back out with no harm done! And a super strong robot helped a whole lot when the giant bunnies needed to be moved from pen to pen. And cleaned out. …there are a lot of people to talk to, at least!!

quote:

Concept: Tunguska Space Robot
Invoke: Handy space facts! Flying through space!
Compel: Bad at pop trivia nights! Walking through doorways!

Spacebot isn't from Tunguska. Spacebot isn't even from this planet! Spacebot isn't even Spacebot's name. But despite the setback of being embedded in an impact crater for forty years or so, Spacebot has made Earth home. Mostly because all methods of reaching escape velocity and astronavigation have been irrevocably damaged, but Earth inhabitants being so darn friendly makes up at least 20% of the reason too. Just a shame elephants don't have more of a say in things, because if buildings were built for elephants…

Robot: Machine from Beyond the Moon
Invoke: High speed computation! Surviving in places mortals cannot! Talking to toasters!
Compel: Big and cumbersome! Sticks out like a sore thumb! Talking to people!

At the time of arrival in 1908, Spacebot was the single most advanced piece of technology on the planet. Unfortunately by the time Tunguska was actually excavated, the rest of the planet had had some time to catch up. That's not to say Spacebot wasn't useful! If there is one single reason the Soviet space program won the space race, it's because of all the help they got from Spacebot. A sentient supercomputer in the 50's? NASA couldn't match that.

Obsolete: 20th Century Wonder
Invoke: Eager to learn! Invaluable technological contributions!
Compel: Antique styling! Keeping up with trends! Guinea pig!

After some time, Moore's Law caught up with Spacebot. Things started to advance past where Spacebot had advanced space knowledge, and so people started to leave Spacebot behind. Everything Spacebot had to offer the scientific and technological community had been studied and exploited by the Soviets, so by the time Spacebot defected to America there wasn't much else to reveal. Spacebot continued to be a valued research assistant, and had insights into problems mere mortals did not. But at some point, Spacebot started getting compared to an iPhone. And Spacebot did not measure up.

Science: Cutting Edge 60’s Technology
Invoke: Space mysteries! Old technology! Moss!
Compel: Earth Mysteries! New Technology! Spurned by moss!

Though it is a fact hidden from many textbooks, computer technology as we know it today is all derived from a single point. Spacebot. A lot of space technology too, when you want to get down to it. And a surprising number of research papers on moss. Interactions with moss. The evolution of moss. How the society of moss developed. All culminating in 'A History of the Earthan-Speaking Mosses', a four volume history on moss. Spacebot had to do something during those dark, cold forty years stuck in the ground.

Omega: Bounced Around
Invoke: Esoteric information. Expert on old technology.
Compel: Being on a blacklist. Feeling left out.

Over the decades, Spacebot has been a guest of many top agencies around the world. The OKB-1 design bureau. The KGB. The USSR Academy of Sciences. UCLA. NASA. Area 51. And now AZACS. Very few people, let alone Spacebots, have had the honour of working with so many esteemed organisations. And very few people, let alone Spacebots, have also been ‘moved on’ from so many esteemed organisations.
