The same eye cannot both look up to heaven and down to earth.
In the City of New York, there lived an extraordinary group of Fables simply trying to get by in our Mundane world. They live among us, never bothering a soul outside of their community. While insular, they were still quick to call this new city home.

...there was a a piece of metal formed deep beneath the Earth. After months and months of excavation it was found and refined just as it's brothers were.

Some would go to cars, some to planes, and others to cheaply made kitchenware. This bit of metal was special however, and it was made an ingot, and forged into a powerful weapon. Jacketed in a brass case, it was shipped like millions of others across the sea, destined to find it's way into the possession of a man with a sick heart living in Newark.

After a few months lying in a dark crate, this lead was finally released to a very intent owner, knowing that it was just the right fit. Finally, fit snugly and confined in a chamber, it knew it was home. Quite the adventure, but it knew even though it was small, it would still mean something, it would be important.

It's joy lasted but a brief moment as a burst of fire and ecstasy throws it into the air, letting it sore above the world.

But this story, as all good stories do, takes a turn. Unable to stop it's course it has no choice but to follow it's direction as it goes through a window just before it bursts and spreads through a young mans forehead, with his skull quickly following suit. The metal was cleaved in all directions, lying in a cooling mass of blood and brains, left alone for hours upon hours until the real story begins...

September 3, 1972
Current Organization of Fabletown:

Mayor - James Deare (The Emperor with no clothes) - Once considered a fool by all from the Homelands, during The War and Exodus, James was a hero. His belief was so strong against the opposition that it roused support from all the soldiers he lead and through pure blind optimism and his leadership, they held the occupation at bay. These days he's grown fat and happy off pure reputation, though few are willing to vocalize any discontent with him specifically.

Deputy Mayor - Cindy - The actual person running the show, Cindy recently took this position from her Ex-Husband Prince Charming, though unknown to her he didn't want the position but knew she would consider it charity if simply given. He provided an opening and both Charming and Fabletown have been immensely happy about the change ever since. Cindy, not so much.

Janitor - Flycatcher, aka Prince Ambrose - Flycatcher is genuinely good natured soul. No one knows how such a pure man was able to escape.

Archivist - Buffkin - This creature has trouble deciding whether he is a drunk or a flying monkey, though he is surprisingly observant and wise. He will give the shirt off his back to anyone. Well anyone but Ella that is. Her coffee tastes a surprising amount like piss whenever he delivers it.

Dead Body - The Dead Body you see before you is Kay. After a piece of the devils mirror was caught in his eye and he was captured by the Snow Queen, Kay could only see the deep and dark parts of each person's soul. He was the unofficial enforcer of the Fabletown compact, a constant reminder to all that their sins will not go unseen. Well, that is until now. With Kay dead your job just got a whole lot harder. His body and the rocking chair it was in collapsed over it's fragile side in the Woodlands. He was in his own apartment, filled with the all the amenities one might imagine, except unlike every other fable he has his Radiator on, but this is normal for him.

"Poor son of a bitch. As if gouging his eyes out on the regular wasn't bad enough..."

Johannes frowned as he stepped over the threshold of Kay's modest apartment, familiar creases in his face furrowing as he took in the carnage of the scene.

"Who called it in?"

The same eye cannot both look up to heaven and down to earth.
Bufkin flies around the apartment like, well, a winged monkey. He's never been allowed to be in a crime scene before due to his refusal to engage in a glamour. This provides a rare opportunity for him.

"Sir, we've never had a murder in Fabletown. Very exciting."

He opens cupboard after cupboard looking for Liquor until he finds a cache. Kay has far more booze than you would have imagined. It's enough that it's appearance is worrisome.

"Charming sent his troll (Olga) here and busted down the door after she didn't get a response. He's been dead for at least a day, maybe even longer, no one noticed he was missing. He's been withdrawn."

"I see. Did Mr. Charming also happen to mention why he was looking for Kay in the first place?"

He knelt beside the corpse, prodding at the red ruin that was Kay's head.

"Greta, if we find the rest of his skull could you bring him back?"

...how does that work?
Tsarevna

Dressed in her heavy winter coat and fur-lined hat, as she always did when the seasons turned towards cold, Tsarevna looked a little too well dressed for attending a crime scene. But that never stopped her before.

"…I don't care if that's how you're 'used' to doing it, Ella." Tsarevna was sternly telling off Elphaba again, something that happened really quite often since she was transferred over to the Sheriff's Department. "This isn't the Thirteenth Floor, we're out in public. We need to stay inconspicuous, which your wand isn't. The only magic you're allowed to throw around out here are glamours. Understood?" While Tsarevna wasn't usually this stern on the other Sheriffs, she really didn't like magic.

The crime scene wasn't especially bloody for her, in the grand scheme of things, but the fact there was a murder on one of their own was deeply troubling. "Chort Vozmi." She curses under her breath. "Kay." She kneels down, looking over the body. "Somebody didn't like you doing you job, my friend." She mutters to herself, noting the headshot. This was 100% deliberate, somebody murdered Kay.

The rest of the room needed looking over, so Tsarevna gets up to do just that. "Bufkin, don't even think about drinking on the job." Tsarevna warns the monkey, looking over the stash of drink. "Drinking to forget?" She suggests. "His job was hardly kind to him." She turns to look at the body. "But then this is far from suicide. Perhaps a death wish?" She talks out loud to herself, looking for the entrance point of whatever blew apart Kay's head. "Most likely a slaying."

Merits
Resources	(•)
Approximately $500 disposable income and $1000 of assets. 'Modest' would be an overstatement,
but after so long on the battlefront Tsarevna had gotten used to living it rough when she is not at home.
So she is happy to live in her spartan apartment on the very edge of Fabletown, waiting patiently for the
day her Ivan will return and make their house a home. She doesn't think it's right to settle down in comfort
and opulence without her husband there to share it all with.

Status: War Veteran	(•)
Standing, authority and respect from commanding part of the war effort. A warrior queen like no other,
Tsarevna's exploits during the war against The Adversary are well known and still remembered. She lead from
the front, being the first into battle and the last to cover a retreat. Her tactical knowledge and military
strategies saw her armies win victories where so often The Kingdom suffered nothing but defeats. Today
she tries to not think about those days, for they were dark times. But Tsarevna stands ready to lead the
fight again should Fabletown ever come under threat.

Enhanced Item	(••)
Curved sword, +1 damage die, 9 again. One of the few keepsakes of Ivan she has, Kladenets is an
enchanted sword that is famous across many Slavic tales. A deadly weapon, even a child could use it and
put down a trained swordsman in a bloody mess of a fight. Tsarevna is just the latest owner, with her
husband holding claim to the sword for the longest time out of anyone. Legend has it that the sword
was forged on the island of Buyan until it was raised in anger against the North Wind. Kladenets managed
to somehow cut the North Wind, and the sword drunk deep of his blood. Ever since, Kladenets has swolen
with the power and swiftness of a mighty winter storm.

Danger Sense	(••)
+2 on reflexive Wits + Composure tolls to detect impending ambushes. Regularly leading troops
into battle, Tsarevna acts as her own scout. There's simply not often a better choice, and never one who
can escape and survive if discovered by the enemy. She has developed a sharp eye and keen ear for noticing
ambushes before they have a chance to happen, and when she suspects something she never leaves it
	alone without checking it out.

Iron Stamina	(••)
Ignore up to -2 brought on by injury or fatigue. Upon resting, sleep like the dead for twelve hours.
Having spent her life trudging through ice and snow, as frog, bird, and human, Tsarevna has built up an
extraordinary endurance over the years. This is no magic, just pure determination and resilience that has
kept her going longer and harder than most Fables could manage.

Striking Looks	(••)
+1 to all Presence or Manipulation rolls when using looks to entertain, persuade, distract or deceive.
As much as she is strong and deadly, Tsarevna is also striking and beautiful. While it is true many Fables
are somewhat good looking, Tsarevna is one of the fairest among the fair. She is not known for using her
looks to get something she wants, which makes it all the more convincing when she decides she needs to.
Her beauty is owed to her mother no doubt, whoever she is, as it couldn't at all be from the repulsive form
	of her father.

Following Tsarevna in her stylish turtle neck and a quite pale pink complexion and a swagger, a wand poking out between her crossed fingers. She doesn't look pleased and looks like she wants to jab the wand up Tsarevna's nose, if only she could. Ella hadn't had the most peaceful transition and Tsarevna seemed to keep the pressure on since she had joined. There wasn't much else for her to do bend to the will and not make waves, but she didn't have to take it laying down.

"This again? I will have you know I bent to your will and changed my skin color all the time, and just because some of don't mind a little creative use of magic can help us!" She says rather definitively, "Okay, I agree, only glamours, but if you need magic to use on evidence, I will wait for you to eat your crow first." Ella said a bit venom before cringing at the body. It hadn't been the first body she had seen, but this wasn't the old country, and it had been awhile.

Instead of looking over the grotesque scene, Ella moves over to Bufkin and starts petting him, "Oh, Bufkiny, did you really find all of this? Good Job!" After a hug to Bufkin, she turns to the body again and looks it over with an expert eye. Stashing her wand in her coat.

"I would say if someone wanted to strike against the Business Office this is where they would start. Something, big might be going down. I wonder though how they did it?" She looks over the bottles and nods, "It must be hard keeping down the people." She mutters under her breathe, and pokes through the bottles.

"This might not be wine, Bufkin, so do be careful. You do know how you get with spirits in you." She sneaks a pat on Bufkin's head and gives a deathly glare at Tsarevna, "I agree it was a 'slaying,' but the real question is by what and who. I know a few spells that could be help, back at the 13th floor" Ella is not very restrained with her venom.

I don't know if I can do this, because I don't have a sheet, but Ella would like to test the wine by scent if it is actual wine or a potion of some sort and look for a murder weapon.

"I don't know sir, He's only a few floors above us."

You might hurt me, and I would hate to have to-" Ella almost growls the last line before coughing for a moment and composing herself. She couldn't afford to screw it up, not because of Tsarevna, but more because of the other woman in her life. She only had one more chance to, "I would hate to have you be restricted to the Business Office all the time, wouldn't you Lovely." She says with restrained anger.

"Oh I guess it is just wine, I thought it would be something exciting." Ella takes a sip and swishes it around in mouth and swallows. "Not very good wine even more so."

Ella looks around the apartment more trying to determine if there was anything else that could possibly be amiss about the situation. Kay's ability alone was enough for many people to murder, but why so blatant?

Despite the proximity to the Woodlands, no one reported gun fire any time recently.

Tsarevna continues measuring the hole and begins doing some clear calculations in her head. The bullets entry does not seem to make sense. It looks like the bullet was from relatively high, but there is no platform high enough for someone to have made the shot from. The adjacent building's roof is simply too low.

Kay keeps his apartment very clean, his desk is immaculate.

"Bullet hole." Tsarevna informs the others, paying Ella's sniping no mind. "Our killer took the shot from outside, Kay wouldn't have seen it coming." She looks back and forth between the entry point and where Kay's head now was. "Except the shot is impossible." She points out the window for the benefit of the others. "The bullet hole and Kay's head don't meet unless the shooter was flying in the air." She cranes her neck to see everything she could from out the window. "Nowhere around is high enough for this shot." She turns around to her fellow Sheriffs. "This was no regular gun or shooter. Somebody spent a lot of time and effort setting up a way to kill Kay."

With nothing to gain from staring out the window anymore, Tsarevna turns her attention to the bullet. Following the trajectory, and going through Kay, she goes to the wall and floor behind him to look for the bullet. "Greta, swaddle the body when you can. We need to get Kay ready to go back the Woodlands."

With Tsarevna tending to the bullet holes and Ella to the wine, Greta approached Kay's desk to begin looking through the neatly-organized papers there. It was hardly snooping to look at the business dealings of a dead man, especially when your intent was to avenge him. Kay's recent workload surely had something to do with the case; this was not a random crime, not in Fabletown.

"Kay wasn't just a person, he was an apparatus. Blind him and a demon can walk amongst angels unnoticed." Tsarevna answers Hans, all the while looking intently for the possibly magic bullet. "And flying is not such an easy feat. Turn into a bird and you can't hold a gun. Even a witch cannot fly without her broomstick, which is easy to spot in the sky."

"Oh, I see where that barb is directed. I will have you know that first off, that I have only done what I have done for good. Also, brooms could really be fine at low altitude. One time! One time, I go above the glamour, never hear the end of it." Ella gripes she was not in a good mood. She had had a romantic dinner planned, and now she is being blamed indirectly for being a bad person. Tsarevna is giving her more hell today than normal.

Ella decides to cut her losses and start to look around the floor or walls for a hole, on the off chance it was the gun not the bullet that was magic.

WHY YOU GOTTA BREAK A BROS HEART
Johannes Hummel

"A magic bullet then." Folding the man's hands over his chest in repose, Johannes patted Kay's pockets and body down one last time to make sure he hadn't missed anything. "We'll probably need magic to find the bullet, or in the least figure out where the shot came from." He looked to the broken window and the corpse again, trying to place the scene one last time as he searched. "A detour to the 13th floor then? Also, anybody see either of his eyes?"

Pat down the stiff? Check his hands? Also where are his famously magic eyes?

"Oh, please, could we not have this? I am far too sober to deal with another argument."

Hans thinks of anyone he could speak with about this. The things that go "bump" in the night know quite a bit, if you just know how to ask...

"Are we almost done here? Because honestly, I'd be better suited asking the Banshees or Keres if they know anything."

(Are Keres a thing? They're Greek spirits of violent deaths, including murders, and Banshees predict deaths, I'm assuming they're a thing.)

"I wasn't talking about you, Ella." Tsarevna answers coldly, still facing the wall and skirting board.

"I imagine his eyes, face, and brain is all here." She gestures to the mixture of broken skull that decorated the wall. "You have a point though, the mirror shard should be in here as well. Or shattered speckles of glass if it was hit by the bullet." She actually bothers to look up from her search now. "While you're scooping up Kay's skull, be sure to look for the mirror too." She directs Greta.

"Hans, don't you think about drinking on the job either."

"Oh, um. Well then." She says snapping her mouth shut. Tsarevna was so doing this on purpose and she knew it! Ella had the sneaking suspicion that she knew what today was for Ella, but it was impossible. Secrets were important to the woman, and especially her personal life. However she was getting no where staring at the wall for pieces of mirror or magic, or whatever. She wished she could use her wand, but it would have to be quick and subtle.

Ella is going to try to think of a magic spell she knows to reveal something if she knows one :x

"Please, my next course of action is interrogating the Monsters. You don't drink before you interrogate Monsters. People who do that wind up on the news as "Presumed Dead"."

"Not being afraid doesn't make me stupid, Evna."

I wanna sing one for the cars
That are right now headed silent down the highway
And it's dark and there is nobody driving And something has got to give

((I don't have investigation results yet from checking the desk over, so apologies if the sequencing gets a little weird. Also, I'm assuming that the PCs have a shroud or something similar for carrying remains.))

Greta Vogel

Greta chose to stay silent as her colleagues began to snipe amongst themselves; she knew well enough that they were all reliable, and perhaps this was serving as a necessary distraction. It was, after all, an unpleasant scene, even for someone like Hans -- but for her, after searching for her sisters' parts in Fitcher's cauldron of blood, even this wasn't so terrible.

"Let's focus on getting what we need and getting back to the Woodlands. We'd better take as much evidence with us as we can, though; once word gets out, this place'll be swarmed with tricky, filthy hands." Greta slipped on a pair of work gloves and unrolled the shroud from the Sheriffs' work kit, hauling the majority of Kay's body before beginning the work of gathering and containing the... loose matter. Most of it was muscle memory, and her attention focused on finding Kay's mirror, or anything that might remain of it.

Do I need any rolls here?

WHY YOU GOTTA BREAK A BROS HEART
Johannes Hummel

"That's a good idea, and with any luck the 13th floor will have some magical scrying glass or spell of not-quite-recently-dead-speaking and we can see for ourselves. We'll also need to interview Charming and his troll, hopefully before he has too much time to coach her with whatever lies he considers least incriminating. This might be better if we use a bucket."

Johannes picked through the pieces alongside Greta, doing his best to pile them up without flinching or looking away. They owed Kay that much anyway, for all that he'd done.

"What do you think Tsarevna? Call them in, split them apart, and let Charming sweat it out while we question Olga first?"

We can search the apartment, hit up Hans' ghostly/monstrous contacts to see if anybody knows a thing/visit the 13th floor to get some magic help like summoning Kay's spirit or scrying the past/play a game of the Usual Suspects with Prince Charming and his troll Olga. I'm probably good for doing the latter. We could stick together in case things get rough or break apart to move faster. Either way it's back to the Woodlands for Team Fabletown? Somebody should also find a bucket since transporting loose brain bits is probably going to be hard going in a tarp.

Tsarevna

"If the Magic Mirror had all the answers then we'd all be out of a job, Johannes." Tsarevna quite audibly sighs. "Magic is not a cure all for ignorance, using your head is. At the very least we need to find the bullet first before we can have it examined for enchantments." She says, still searching for the drat thing. "And why on earth would you wish to talk to his ghost? Kay was, from the looks of it, assassinated. If he knew he was in danger he would have come to us. As it stands, it looks like he didn't and hence wouldn't be able to tell you anything."

"There is no reason to suspect Prince Charming of anything at the moment." Tsarevna tersely answers Johannes. "They called it in. Besides asking why he was looking for Kay, there's no reason to question either of them. But if you want to lock him in the office and interrogate him… why not? Go right ahead." She shrugs.

You look around the desk and notice ledger detailing a series of transactions. The current final balance seems to be around half a million dollars. They seem to be in some kind of code, though the transactions are rare, maybe one a week. The ledger has account numbers to the Fables own credit union.

Ella
Ella finds the bullet, but does not find any sign of magic around it, other than Kay himself. Either someone has gone through great lengths to hide a magical nature

Johannes
Inside Kay’s coat pocket you find several twenties, a few matchbooks for the Trip Trap Bar, and a receipt for a dinner at Tavern on the Green. His eyes are relatively intact.

Hans
Speaking with the dead is relatively difficult. It would take quite a long ritual or powerful magic to do so.

Ella
Ella thinks she can prepare a ritual to see the last few minutes of Kay’s death but it will take her a night to complete and some of his blood.

If I missed you please remind me.

Her fingers pluck a bullet from the wall and looks it over with her fingers, "Here is the bullet, this is very well done magic to conceal it or it is just a normal bullet." Ella looks it over with a bit of disgust and a sigh, "Did anyone find the piece of the mirror? If not, I could find out what happened with a little bit of his blood, but it take the entire night to complete really to find out the last few minutes." Ella says with a sigh.

"Well that is if we don't just have someone with a bit more power to do it." Ella says thinking for a moment, "If theft was the issue well then, we know that someone is trying to make a move."

The same eye cannot both look up to heaven and down to earth.
You are in the Woodlands. 12th floor.

Upon examining the window Tsarevna is unable to find anything special, however as she's finding an angle and crouched on the floor looking, she can see under Kay's bed in his large but still studio apartment. There seems to be a piggy bank under there, as well as a bag of dried rose petals, and a Journal.

To get anything out of the journal you will need an extended period of rest to examine it. Most of it is just extremely depressing and boring thoughts of isolation and sadness.

"Keep the bullet, it's still evidence. And finding the mirror is our number one concern here, now." Tsarevna calls to Ella, noticing the items stashed away under the bed. Reaching over, one by one she pulls out a piggy bank, the bag of rose petals, and a journal. Balancing them all, she looks at all three in turn. "I'll have to read through this tonight and see if any clues come up." She glances over to the stash of wine. "Though if it's anything beyond being depressed and drunk I'll be surprised." Then the rose petals. "Kay never struck me as the type to enjoy rosehip tea. Any ideas besides the obvious connections to a paramour?" She asks of the other sheriffs.

And then the piggy bank. She brings it up to her ear and rattles it. Gently. Because even a moderate rattling by her may break the drat thing. "Looks like Cinderella's getting $12.50’ in quarters to add to the Business Office coffers." She concludes.

Putting the bullet in a pouch she nods to this, "I don't think it will be light reading for sure, as for Rose petals... Kay never really came across to me as a romantic." Ella said a bit more calm now, "I hope we can get a better coffee machine now, all my coffee tastes terrible. I'm going to have to go with some nice tea leaves. I do wonder about rose petals." Ella searches her mind for a moment trying to think of some component or spell that would use them.

Going to attempt to figure out if there is any other use for rose petals.

"I will be reading the journal tonight, yes." She just makes clear, holding onto all three items. "Might give some context for the rose petals, I never know my luck."

She doesn't seem terribly impressed at Johannes' haul. "A drunk frequents a bar. Hardly groundbreaking." She notes on the contents of Kay's pockets. "But lacking much else…" She shrugs. "We seem to be building up a list of people to question and places to visit, but nothing that even begins to point at a who or why."

Tsarevna starts to look around the largely clean and spotless room again, hoping that there was anything else to check out. She at the very least goes over to turn off the radiator.

"There's more interesting things on the desk," said Greta, still going about the methodical work of gathering Kay's remains into a portable, not-instantly-revolting package. "Coded business transaction ledgers on the desk -- couldn't get much out of them at a glance, but I want to take them with us. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were changing hands through our credit union. I don't know Kay's pay rate, but that's the sort of money that makes people do desperate things."

"So we know he was messed up in something. Money, it figures." Ella says with a sneer and resists the urge to spit more toward the Business Office. "Either way, it seems it got him killed."

"Pure conjecture." Tsarevna levels at Ella. "We don't know anything about motive yet, on any side of this. As far as debts go, slayings are rare. Death does not recoup losses." She looks at the desk, picking up the ledger and keeping it with the journal. "Getting Cinderella's permission to go through these account couldn't hurt, though." She sighs. "Forensic accounting. My favourite."

Hands were getting more and more full, and that wasn't even counting the body they had to move. And by they, Tsarevna actually meant she had to move. She was the only one strong enough to effortlessly carry the body down, after all. In light of this, she hands off the petals, diary, ledger and piggy bank to Ella. "First thing, we need to take Kay to the Business Office. Cinderella will have some administration to do of Kay's belongings. He should also be autopsied in case we missed anything, and then interned in the Witching Well."

"But as for leads… questioning Prince Charming and Olga?" She looks to Johannes. "Going to this bar and restaurant? Investigating these credit union accounts?" She turns her gaze to Greta. "Analyse the bullet?" Tsarevna very briefly looked to Ella. "And were you still going to talk to the dead, Hans?"
