Mission 35

We start out with some upgrades, mostly topping up EN on units that haven't had it yet. Energy is very cheap to upgrade; maxing out the Gan-Duro's EN here costs 15k, while four bars of armor upgrades costs 26k. Since one bar of an upgrade is more expensive the higher you go, it's more cost-efficient to partially upgrade a lot of units; on the other hand, you'll get more combat mileage out of one really evasive/tanky unit than out of a bunch of so-so ones. And then there's weapon upgrades.

Also, Mai joins the team with both Support Attack and natural SP Regen, so I get to start right off by buying her Attacker.

Gilliam meets with Ratsel and Sanger in an undisclosed location - it's important that they have a private retreat, given the need to keep a low profile these days. Sanger notes that if Kai were here, all the remaining Aggressors would be gathered in one place. But then again, Kai's willingness to act in the field leaves the others free to move as they wish.

Ratsel: “So, a toast. To the departed, Kar-wai Lau and Tempest Hawker... and to Major Kai on the Hagane, and our other friends.”
Sanger: “Cheers.”
Gilliam: “Cheers.”

Ratsel: “Our main course tonight is poiret aux sea bass. Sanger caught it this afternoon.”
Gilliam: “Oh? Quite a feast. Incidentally, Sanger... that’s not---”
Sanger: “Don’t worry. This is just oolong tea.”
Ratsel: "A special blend from Fujian. I had a time acquiring it."
Gilliam: "Ever the gourmet, eh?"

With the pleasantries out of the way, it’s time for Gilliam to share his own contribution to the feast: news of what’s happening in Federation Command. Ratsel and Sanger are both aware of the Grusman faction’s takeover; ironically, after a number of twists and turns, Bian Zoldark and Maier Branstein’s objective has been realized. The transfer of power was remarkably smooth, thanks to Brian’s willingness to step down peacefully and avoid bloodshed. It would seem like the Federation is prepared to present a united front against the alien threat.

Gilliam: “...But the problem comes after. We’re facing abuses of rights, war profiteers like Isurugi run amok... and when the Earth sphere is exhausted, the shadows may devour us all.”
Sanger: “Shadows?”
Ratsel: “They're your real concern?”
Gilliam: “Yes. They’re moving actively now; I have to stop them.”
Sanger: “You're speaking about the ones with my double in their ranks?”
Gilliam: “Yes - the ones with weapons not of this world. They’re called the Shadow Mirrors.”

Sanger: “Who are they?”
Gilliam: “.....”
Sanger: “Gilliam?”
Ratsel: “If you can’t say, then don’t.”
Gilliam: “I’m sorry. It’s still too soon...”

Gilliam: “The Shadow Mirrors are elusive - and I can’t allow them to track me, either. This will be my only chance. They've revealed themselves, and for the time being, they are alone.”
Ratsel: “And you're saying that we can’t assist you with this?”
Gilliam: “No. But now that their main unit has made contact with the Hagane and Hiryu, I can guess their position.”

Gilliam: “So I have to go, and pick up my pieces.”
Ratsel: “.....”
Sanger: “.....”
Ratsel: (The Kurogane still needs more repairs. And without Bian's gift for us...)

Sanger: “Ratsel. I need you to prepare the Type-3.”
Gilliam: “!”
Ratsel: “Good. I’ll be going too. We have Mao’s designs from the plant at Orleans; the adjustments are already finished.”
Gilliam: “You’re coming? But, you're both getting into...”
Sanger: “You have said it yourself. They cannot be left to their own devices.”
Ratsel: “We also act in the shadows to support the Hagane and Hiryu. This may be our best opportunity for a showdown.”

Gilliam: “...Forgive me. Both of you.”
Sanger: “Enough of that.”
Ratsel: “I’ll wrap the plates for later. When we’ve confirmed their position, we move.”

Lamia: “Uh... th-this is... Where am I? The Angelg was...”
Lamia: (I’m undamaged... did the self-destruct mechanism fail? This isn’t the Hagane or Hiryu Kai. I need to gather information.)

Lamia: “Who’s there!?”
Lemon: “Hello, W17. I see you’re awake.”
Lamia: “Mistress Lemon? Then, this is the Shirogane...”

Lamia: “Hm? My speech...”
Lemon: “I repaired your language system. Truth be told, I wouldn't have minded leaving it like that... but it doesn't really fit your image, does it?”

Aww.

Lamia: "Thank you. And you're safe, Mistress... when the Angelg was destroyed, I thought you---"
Lemon: "Don't worry. I got out of the way in time. The Zwei took a beating, though. The damage to System XN forced us to withdraw - so I think you could call your little maneuver a success. Everything else was simple. Somehow your cockpit block came through okay, so I repaired the damage. Fixing your speech was just a bonus."
Lamia: "Thank you... then I assume you need something more from me?"
Lemon: "Heh... you're as sharp as ever, W17. I'd like an explanation, if you please."
Lamia: "....."

Lemon: "You disobeyed clear directives - and then you fired upon your own allies."
Lamia: "This world has no place for us. That was my conclusion, and so---"
Lemon: "And so. You violated your directives - those of all the W-Series, I should add. Did I include that particular piece of functionality in your routines?"
Lamia: "Then I was defective after all? But you must have corrected it during my repairs."
Lemon: "All I corrected was your speech. Anything else is up to you."
Lamia: "....."

Lemon: "You're just about human now."
Lamia: "Human? Mistress Lemon, I'm a W-Series... you built me. To disobey my creator's wishes is... unforgivable."
Lemon: "Well, in a way, you've been bringing my wishes to life."
Lamia: "...What?"

Lemon: "When you left for the Hagane and Hiryu, I told you to use your own judgement, and make your own decisions. Didn't I?"
Lamia: "You did... but as a result, I---"
Lemon: "Yes. You developed your own sense of self. Individual will is secondary is a core directive of the W-Series. And yet you've progressed to this stage... for the Shadow Mirrors' needs, as a weapon, you're of little use."
Lamia: "....."

Lemon: "But speaking as a scientist... you are what I've always dreamed of."
Lamia: "Mistress? You... wanted this?"
Lemon: "As a test case, we gave W15 the personality of Sanger Zonvolt. But he's little more than a copy. He lacks Sanger's judgement in any situation beyond a mere simulation. And he needs Magus Gebo's influence to remain stable... he can't act for himself."
Lamia: "....."
Lemon: "But within you, a person has been born. One who doesn't just carry out directives, but makes decisions based on her own goals, and acts on them..."

Lamia: "But... what do I do now? If being a person makes me a failure as a W-Series... I don't belong in this world, I can't perform my duties. Then, what is left for---"
Lemon: "Don't worry about that. Just choose something. I know you're strong, and smart, and skilled... so, how about it? Will you fight for us again?"
Lamia: "....."

Lamia: "...Yes. If that is your wish, Mistress."
Lemon: "No, I said choose. What does W17... no, what does Lamia Loveless want?"
Lamia: "....."

Lamia: "...To leave."
Lemon: "Hm... well, the Vysaga's in the rear hangar. You'd better get going."
Lamia: "...!"
Lemon: "If you'd prefer the Angelg, I'll jettison its parts. You can recover them later."
Lamia: "But, that's..."
Lemon: "Hmhm... don't worry, I had the self-destruct removed from both."
Lamia: "Mistress Lemon..."

Lemon: "Allies turning coat is a reality of war; this is the world we wanted. It's ironic, given that you're the masterpiece of the series I created to make it happen. I'm being betrayed, but as a scientist, I'm filled with joy... it's a complicated feeling."
Lamia: "Forgive me, Mistress. But if you give me this chance, I will use my power to end this war."

Lamia: (And that means, in the end...)
Lemon: "We'll be enemies from now on. Show me what you can do... when the time comes."
Lamia: "I will. Then..."

Lemon: "...One more thing before you go, W17. Excellen Browning, from the ATX Team... what's she like?"
Lamia: "So, she is related to you?"
Lemon: "....."
Lamia: "Was she family on the other side?"
Lemon: "Oh, maybe."
Lamia: "....."
Lemon: "So what kind of person is she?"
Lamia: "Beowulf's partner. A difficult person to read. But she was kind to me."

Lamia: "And somehow... the way she carried herself reminded me of you, Mistress."
Lemon: "I see. Why didn't you report that earlier?"
Lamia: "...I don't know. For some reason, I... didn't want to. And, I didn't want to tell her, either..."
Lemon: "She might be the cause of your growth."
Lamia: "...She might."

Lemon: "Well, as a thank-you for your thoughts, there's just one more thing... the Door of Aguieus will be open soon."
Lamia: "...! Then, System XN is---"
Lemon: "Almost. The last thing we need is the core, and we'll be fully operational."
Lamia: (The core... Helios. But his whereabouts are still...)
Lemon: "You remember where System XN is installed, right?"
Lamia: "The Zweizergain. The Angelg's self-destruct wasn't able to destroy it."
Lemon: "You'd better get going. Axel will be returning soon, and it wouldn't do for you to have a run-in."

:eng101: The differences in this scene from its original version are pretty extensive, with the most notable case being Lemon's attitude toward Lamia's growth. Rather than being openly pleased with how Lamia turns out, in the original Lemon is irritated that Lamia "matured" in exactly the opposite manner that she'd intended. The comments about Lemon's dreams as a scientist are missing, with Wodan only being mentioned when Lamia tries to protest that she's not so special because he had a personality too.

Lamia's worries about what she'll eventually have to do if she opposes the Shadow Mirrors (i.e. fight Lemon) are also missing, along with Lemon's acknowledgement that meeting Excellen is probably what set Lamia on her current path.

There is one thing that was removed from the original. Before leaving, Lamia stops to tell Lemon that she believes there's no place in the world (or any world) for people who desire war - especially those born to cause it, like herself. Lemon's response is basically just to say "we'll see" and promise that they'll be enemies when they meet next.

Instead of that, we got this next bit.

Lamia: "...I understand. Mistess Lemon, I will be le-eaving--- huh!?"
Lemon: "Oh, dear. Looks like it needed a little more work."
Lamia: "M-Mistress... you said you repaired my language system."
Lemon: "It's easy enough to switch the parts, but it's a memory that'll disappear - even if it's just a little one. That's part of your growth, as much as anything else... and you can't just change that out for new parts."

Lemon: "...But, if you think it's a bug, I can finish the job. So? Should I fix it? It won't take long."
Lamia: "No, I am glad. It's... a part of me. Thank you for leaving it, Mistress."

Lemon: "Heh... well, go on, W17. Whose reason for fighting is purest... ours, or yours? The outcome of this war will be the proof."
Lamia: "I know. Please, take care, Mistress Lemon."

Mission 35: Banished from Paradise

Axel's squadron has just finished suppressing the Federation base. For his part, Axel is surprised that the W-Series are still being used after W17's rebellion; normally you'd expect them all to be decommissioned.

Axel: (But then, who would have thought a "defective" unit would push us so far? I have to admit, she was exceptional. The only one of the numbered series to fight me to a draw...)

Axel: (Heh. Listen to yourself. They're made for war, so stop wasting your pity.)

:eng101: Axel was in full jerkass mode in the original, with his only comment on the W-Series being that robots are more pleasant to be around when they don't think they have personalities.

The Shirogane arrives, but with no sign of W15 or W16 as its escorts. Axel hails the ship, but there's no response from Lee...

...and then a new mech tears the ship's hatch open from the inside.

Lamia: "Hm? That's... the Soulgain! It seems I've made my exit at the worst possible time..."
Axel: "Wait. W17!? If that's your idea of a departure, your readjustments need some more work."
Lamia: "I beg to differ, Captain. I'm going out to fight... for myself!"
Axel: "What... was that?" (I knew it... she's nothing like the others at all!)

Aboard the ship, a furious Vindel demands an explanation from Lemon. Oh dear, she replies, looks like her masterpiece decided she didn't want to be readjusted after all... but not to worry, she escaped right into the middle of Axel's crew, so the problem will take care of itself.

Lemon: (If you meet your end here... was the path too steep for you, W17?)

Axel: "Stand down, W17. I'll let you go back. Let Lemon finish your adjustments."
Lamia: "If I go back, I'll lose everything. I have to leave... I have to cut my ties with the W-Numbers."
Axel: "Cutting ties? I cut my ties with the other side when I came here. Do you realize you're throwing away your entire world?"
Lamia: "You... you might be right. But my mind is made up, Captain Axel."

Axel: "...All right. But if you want to go, you'll have to go through me."
Lamia: "...Understood."

Axel: (That verbal tic of hers is cleared up, too. That's a strange choice for Lemon to fix. Unless... oh, she didn't...)
Lemon: "....."

Axel: "Nobody else interfere. W17 is a traitor. As her superior, bringing her down is my responsibility."
Lamia: "Settling things one on one? You're making it harder for yourself, Captain."
Axel: "Heh. Yeah, it's a bad habit of mine."

Axel tells Vindel not to waste time watching; they need to hurry up and resupply the Shirogane, before more Federation troops come to relieve the base.

Axel: "Let's go, W17."
Lamia: "As you wish. I'll fight you, Captain... not because you order it, but for my own sake. If you stand in my way, I'll shoot you down."
Axel: "Brave words. I can guess who you learned them from - but that just makes it more important that I win."

:eng101: To get the original version of Axel's dialogue, take anything relatable that he might have said and just remove it. In the original Lamia was supposed to be dismantled, not just readjusted. His response to Lamia's arrival is just to say that as he thought, she was just broken after all; he says he'll fight her one-on-one because one broken doll is no problem for him; and when she says she'll make her own path, he's just contemptuous of the idea that she can beat him.

Basically just scratch out Axel's dialogue and sub in GRR ARGH BROKEN DOLLS :arghfist::smuggo: and you'll have Original Axel.

Little things like Lamia keeping part of her tic are so humanizing and her growth being Excellen's influence helps sell why Lemon would go through with this. It is nice to see their scene translated rather than having a one-sentence summary to go with it.

I just realized that this series has tons of antagonistic scientists but most of them are crazy, evil or both. Lemon is one of the better (and most understated) of the bunch.

Are the Vysaga and the Ashsaber still mutually exclusive in this version? That's what makes the A better than the V, because while technically the ninja is a better mecha than the Ashsaber two quite good robots (the Ashsaber and the Angelg) are better than a single amazing one (as both Vysaga and Angelg are Lamia only).

Yes, and until Moon Dwellers, we will continue to have one of the Vysaga or Angelg with no pilot. Moon Dwellers finally adds a pilot who can pilot the Vysaga, and their mech is generic so anyone can take it.

Original Axel is a better villain but I really understand why they readjusted him in that it's pretty odd to have a (potential) OG protagonist just be an irredeemable shitlord instead of merely an average level shitlord.

I would say the Vysaga is still better in that OGs2 doesn't really have someone to put in the Ashsaber who benefits from it. It's an excellent mecha but almost every single potential pilot has something better unless you're doing some really weird pilot shuffling while Vysaga is a pretty much straight upgrade for Lamia.

It was better in the original OG2 where several pilots didn't have the robots they do in OGs and thus a kickass real robot is a better choice overall.

Ironically that mecha that is so generic anyone can take it encourages you to stick Lamia in it at least once!

The Ashsaber is one of my favourite mech designs in OG, but the lack of Barrier Pierce on the finisher really, really hurts. Other than that it's a pretty solid real you can put anyone in, which is nice. Viletta can make some really good use of it, since there's no real reason to take Mai out of the R-Gun in OG2.

But god, not having Barrier Pierce just kills it. Yeah, it's a grunt sweeper, but most other grunt sweepers can still get around barriers.

This is pretty much my thoughts on the matter. Ashsaber in the GBA version was a welcome bonus to a couple of pilots who were stuck with crappy default units and no real alternative option. People like Tasuku and Rio, who both start in sub-optimal mechs for their piloting style, have options in that they can be given stuff like the Grungust Type 2 or the Huckebein Mk. II and keep up with other pilots. However, Viletta and Gilliam in particular had no real alternatives back then (especially in Viletta's case since Mai is the much better pilot for the R-Gun here) for them to pilot, so the Ashsaber complimented them wonderfully. I'd usually stick Gilliam in it so he had something resembling decent firepower for later missions.

On the flip side, OGs has given some of those screwed-over pilots better options (we're about to see Gilliam's awesome new ride in a bit), so the Ashsaber becomes "that decent unit we keep around in case anyone wants to use it". At least it's much better than some of the junk OG tries to dump on the player, like the awful F-32 fighter jet that even the recently released Moon Dwellers retains.

Fair, but in the GBA version, his Gespenst was very mediocre and would trail behind a lot of the team. And, as mentioned before, endgame enemy units in OG2 do not mess around and are very tough to deal with, especially if your unit is not up to par with people around you.

But like I said a moment ago, the game is about to respond to those complaints and give Gilliam an actual good custom unit. And a kickass theme, too.

Here's the base, with a bunch of Gespies, R-Eins, and Fylgia tanks defending. (Well, I guess they're not really defending it if they just finished taking the base over, but whatever.) Also the Shirogane and Axel's Soulgain.

As well as this delightful fellow, and actually a brand new unit for the remake - the Trilobite-class carrier. It's generally unremarkable apart from having a rather hefty 100,000 health.

But of course, the real star of the show is Lamia in the Vysaga, a motherfucking ninjabot. An AB field, After-Image, and Full Block (total immunity to status effects, so no more of Lamia getting stunned for an entire turn). This is a secret mech that we've been building up to for a while, involving such esoteric requirements as parking Lamia on a particular unmarked square twenty missions back, and fighting Axel exactly once on Mission 26.

How awesome is the Vysaga?

Pretty loving awesome, considering that all the grunts are defending so that Axel can have his duel. It's a slightly unfair comparison, because Lamia starts at 130 morale on this mission, but the Vysaga's a pretty welcome step up from the Angelg. It has largely the same capabilities (minus flight), but has mobility added in on top of it, as most of its good weapons are post-movement. Also it has a badass cape.

Axel: "W17, whatever you say you're feeling, you still disobeyed orders and tried to kill Lemon. There's a price to be paid for that."
Lamia: "...I am aware."
Axel: "You're strong, but you're an irregularity now. Something that upsets the balance. There's no place for that in the world I'm after."
Lamia: "I don't know anything about that. But I need this strength... right now, I'm as sure of that as I am of anything!"

:eng101: Evil Axel:

Axel: "W17... you disobeyed orders and tried to kill us. In addition, now you've completely sided with the enemy."
Lamia: "..."
Axel: "I should have gotten rid of you a while ago. Lemon's effort was wasted on you."
Lamia: "If I'm going to die here, then so be it. Let's see if that's what my future holds, Chief."

Since only Axel will attack on each turn, we can just have Lamia cast Alert to avoid damage as we inch over to the base, planning to use it for cover. Attacking Axel is a waste of time given that the Soulgain will just regen the damage anyway, so we may as well get a head start on the inevitable battle mastery.

On Turn 3, things advance.

Axel: "What's wrong, W17? Has the fire gone out already? Was this all you had after all?"
Lamia: (He's right... I'm at far too great a disadvantage. If I'm going to have a chance, then...)

Right on cue, the Shirogane's alarm sounds. Lee picks up three incoming contacts...

A Huckebein Mk. III, the Grungust Type-3, and a black Gespenst. An unkown custom type, like the Alteisen and Weissritter. Gilliam and Ratsel quickly confirm the sight of the White Wraith Moustache Man, the mech that appeared during Operation SRW - which means this is the main body of the Shadow Mirror forces.

Gilliam: "Colonel Vindel Mauser of the Shadow Mirrors... do you read me?"
Vindel: "Who are you?"

Gilliam: "You would know me as... Helios."

Why aren't you using the good song for the Vysaga? We didn't do all those requirements just to listen to the Angelg theme.

Seconded. Not using So Close, Yet So Far is a crime worse than what the evil factions here have done.

So Close So Far is to be saved for special moments. :colbert:

Also, it's Lamia's theme, not specifically the Angelg.

Fun fact: Vysaga also gets Chaos as a mech BGM option in this game (and OG Gaiden, since it reused a fuckton of OGs assets). And then in 2nd OGs, Vysaga loses both A Future So Close, Yet So Far and Chaos as mech BGM options.

But of course, the big thing here is the cliffhanger and its kickin' rad BGM. Buckle up folks, exposition/a plot dump is about to come crashing through the door at breakneck speeds.

I know nothing about the plot of these games, but it's clear what is happening here.

This whole interdimensional war was started because when Gilliam left, he took his superior hair care secrets with him.

Now, the Shadow Mirrors cause wars to "jump start technological growth", hoping to reach a point science can make their hair just as fabulous.

Maybe Irm only stayed in his 4/F/F Final look and never got the luxurious mullet he has here.

Without Gilliam's fabulous hair care products, how could he possibly have grown that mullet?
