Death to royalty, power to the people.

First time I played this mission in OGS I had actually forgotten Tenzan showed up, since it had been so long since I played it on the GBA. Had to restart and creamed them the next time. But I have to point out one thing you forgot when killing Tempest: Giado has Training as his Twin Spirit. It's Luck/Gain, but for PP. Massively useful, and if you're making a twin with him there's no excuse not to use it. Same with Rio. He also eventually learns Renew, which is sort of useful. (but not really worth deploying him in the final battle for, since the real shenanigans don't start until OG2)

Kyosuke Route, Mission 21

Okay, time to swap everybody back into their proper units after the fun we had last miss---

uh

what

Our people are gone! What in the...

Well, whatever. I made another post-movement uber-rifle for Kyosuke's route, so I'm putting that on Excellen given that she has a woeful lack of decent post-movement attacks (without casting Assail). Let's see what this is all about.

The ATX members are called to the Hiryu's bridge; the Federation has requested that they transport the R-GUN to the Far East Base, then report to the command there for further orders.

Excellen: "So sudden... do you think they found out about that one time?"
Bullet: "Uh, Lieutenant... which one time was that?"
Kyosuke: "What are you two talking about?"
Excellen: "You should know! What about that time you wagered the Alt in a bet against Tasuku?"
Kyosuke: "I seem to recall winning that bet. What's the problem?"

Sean: "I'm not certain what you're all on about, but either way, the three of you will be taking a Tausendfussler to Izu."
Lefina: "But don't worry, I've written down everything I just heard in my little black book."
Excellen: (Talk about old-fashioned...)

Kyosuke asks about the situation on the ground, and they're filled in on things we already know from Ryusei's route. The DC remnants are engaging in guerrilla activities after their defeat at Aidoneus, troops loyal to the EOT Council have since moved in to occupy Aidoneus and claimed credit for the Hagane's victory, and Council chairman Karl Schtleseman is actively blocking any attempt to reorganize the military in favor of reopening communication channels with the aliens. Excellen asks if they're supposed to assassinate him while they're down there, which Kyosuke overrules at once.

With that, Sean turns the R-GUN over to us, and says that it'll be Excellen's responsibility to plot a sea route without interruptions.

Why, Sean? Why would you do this?

On the shuttle, Bullet is sort of wondering the same thing, especially when Excellen needs to confirm that the Far East Base is, in fact, in Japan. At least they should be able to enjoy some good seafood while they're in Izu. Kyosuke is silent during this; Excellen asks if he's looking forward to returning to his home base at last, but his memories of the place aren't the fondest.

The banter is interrupted by a distress call from the surface - it must be sent from a location with advanced broadcasting facilities, since they're receiving it directly instead of having it routed through Columna. It turns out to be from the duchy of Riksent. Kyosuke knows nothing about it, so Excellen volunteers to fill in this gap in "Principal Kyosuke"'s knowledge, telling him that it's an independent Mediterranean nation mostly known for its resorts and sightseeing.

As for the SOS, it's the result of a DC attack; Excellen figures they're after the country's gold mines, which Kyosuke guesses means that they want it as their new capitol.

Bullet is all set to go rescue them, but Kyosuke sternly says to leave it to the Federation ground troops; they have their own mission to accomplish. In any case, Excellen adds that the coordinates for Japan have already been entered, and they're about to begin their re-entry so it's too late for changes. Bullet is devastated by this, and Kyosuke tells him that he can't save everyone, no matter how much he wishes.

This is followed by the same scene with Shine and Joyce from Ryusei's route.

Mission 21: Little Princess

Same title as Ryusei's version, though Ryusei's was in English (using katakana) and Kyosuke's is in Japanese. Atlus went with "Brave Princess" for Kyosuke's version, though some of these differences may have actually been in the Japanese GBA script. Who knows.

Largely the same confrontation as before between Tempest and Joyce. One difference here: I mentioned in Ryusei's version that the original GBA version had Tempest announcing that while Shine would be safe, the kingdom would end up being made an example. That still actually happens here on Kyosuke's route in the remake.

Enter the conquering heroes.

"Oh, thank God. The palace is still intact!"
"Oooh, doesn't this make you feel like a knight in shining armor riding to the kingdom's rescue?"

.....

"Let's take them out!"
"We should. They look a bit surprised to see us."

"Excellen."
"Mmmmyeeeesss?"
"What are we doing here? I thought you set a sea route."
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe there's a bug in the navigation software?"
"I wanted to get to the Far East Base without trouble. Now we have to fight these people."

"I'm sorry, Excellen!"
"Mmhmhmm... oh, it's nothing."

Excellen Browning, conscience of the ATX Team.

Then we get a rough repeat of last time's exchange with Tempest, although the last time the ATX crew saw him was way back in Mission 8. He's A-OK with threatening children because :argh: REVENGE :argh: and nothing's going to convince him otherwise.

Shine speaks up, saying that he won't succeed because now help has arrived, et cetera, and prompts an outraged response from the ATX crew (or from Bullet at least, the other two are pretty laid-back) about how the DCs are scumbags. Looks like we'll need to rescue the Princess ourselves before the enemy get their hands on her. Kyosuke would do it himself in the Alt, but he may need to count on Excellen and Bullet instead.

Objectives. This time our primary goal is actually to get to Shine, with defeating the enemies being (apparently) optional; the battle mastery this time around is to get someone to the target point within three turns.

Same map as last time, although we start a bit closer and the target point is on the royal compound's front wall instead of on the palace itself. There are fewer enemies and... only three of us. And no, the Hagane is not going to suddenly arrive from Ryusei's route and provide reinforcements. This is it.

On the enemy front we have Tempest in his Stork and a few minor DC annoyances. The Landlions are new, but still nothing we need to worry about.

So, off we go. I have so many Boosters and poo poo strapped to the Weissritter that it moves as fast as the Alt, even with Kyosuke casting Accelerate.

It's not the Weiss' proper rifle, but I hope you'll forgive me.

On the first enemy phase the Landlions and jets make their move, while Tempest and the Lions hold back (at least for now).

I figure Bullet's going to need Excellen's help to kill things still, so I set him up to have her support.

And he kills the target in one shot instead. I'm so proud.

While Kyosuke speeds for the target point, Excellen takes a first poke at Tempest.

On Kyosuke's route, Tempest starts out by defending (for the time being).

(Atlus)
"You're an odd bunch, coming all the way here from space."
"Saving the world is a cakewalk for us superheroes."
"Another wisecrack..."
"I take life at my own pace. That's how I'm livin'."

I'm probably lucky that he doesn't have enough morale to use his E-Field yet.

He still attacks on the enemy phase, though. With the Revenge bonus factored in, she does a fair bit better.

Also, she levels up again! Record breaker!

I tried to set Kyosuke up just right so that one of the Landlions would end up next to him during its mad rush for the target point, and it works out.

I can't even feel sorry for this guy.

Not one bit.

(Also, Bullet whiffed versus a jet. Bullet!) :argh:

On turn 3, Kyosuke hits the target area.

:toot:

This triggers Tenzan's arrival (this time with a bunch of Barrrelions, instead of the Landlions from last time). He's surprised to see the red beetle mech again, then launches into the same passive-aggressive exchange with Tempest from last time.

"He's still alive!"
"Well, he's probably the type who keeps coming back. Insert coin to continue, right?"

Nonetheless, Kyosuke is aware that the area won't be secure while they're in it, and instructs Bullet and Excellen to defend the palace at all costs.

Our new objective is to wipe out the enemies. Losing anybody is a game over.

This many Barrelions in close proximity to Kyosuke means that I need to give them somebody else to shoot at. Like Excellen.

She'll be able to handle them all by herself.

Bullet falls back as well.

Now that the target area is safe, Tempest starts advancing. For some reason those last two Lions stay in the back for this turn.

Tenzan, on the other hand, goes straight for Kyosuke. Actually, he and Tempest will both exclusively focus on Kysouke throughout this mission.

"It's you. I guess you lived through Aidoneus."
"Of course! The best game is just getting started..."
"The game might be beginning, but your time is over."

For some reason I decide it'll be a great idea to zoom way in for the rest of the map. Since Tenzan is going to be gunning for Kyosuke exclusively, I have him fall back to the palace, which actually offers some pretty impressive defensive bonuses (20% HP regen, for one).

Excellen and Bullet make short work of the Barrelions.

Tenzan will merrily blast away at Kyosuke from out of range, so I pull him back even further, in order to bait Tenzan into melee range.

This is actually almost a necessity on this mission. Tenzan will kill Excellen or Bullet in a single hit, and can kill Kyosuke in two, so with no support from the Hiryu or your other people (none of the ATX members know any healing spirits) you're reliant on the terrain (or blind luck and savescumming) to keep you going. (You could also equip somebody with a repair module beforehand, but I'm giving you the true unvarnished experience here.)

Meanwhile, Bullet has enough morale to start firing away with the G-Impact Cannon.

"Are you still treating war like a game?!"
"Of course! There's no greater rush than this!"
"Shut it! The DCs' war is over! Think about the real threat to the Earth!"

PELVIC THRUST ATTACK

This is with Valor cast. A bad run of RNG could end me on this mission, so I'm trying to wrap it up faster if possible.

Case in point: Bullet probably would have died here if he hadn't cast Grit already.

Excellen wipes the Lions off the map, leaving us with just the bosses to play with.

Tenzan finally comes close enough to the palace that Kyosuke can stake him properly.

Ugh. This loving Barrelion.

On the bright side, Kyosuke levels up and learns Valor. :getin: And he really does has the devil's luck, because I don't think he got hit by Tenzan once on this run.

Tempest has been moving towards Kyosuke all this time, so he's now in Bullet's cannon range. (Bullet's off-screen to the left, trust me.)

"Targeting a child... you disgust me!"
"Pitiful. I can tell you're one of Sanger's men."
"! The Major would never do something so horrible!"

This always strikes me as a weird exchange. "Yeah, I can tell you're one of Sanger's men. :smug:" "That's because... we don't kidnap little girls?"

Another valor-powered cannon shot knocks off almost a third of the Stork's health. Bullet hits level 23 and learns Spirit, which to me seems a bit :flaccid: for a final spirit command. Oh well.

He also made ace during this mission, giving him a 10% bonus to his hit and crit rates.

Excellen moves over to help out versus Tenzan. (Tenzan pulls a natural 40% hitrate against the Weiss' maxed mobility, so she really needs to be hoarding her SP for the bosses.)

"Hey, long time no see, hottie!"
"You're looking well. But you should try to keep your gaming down to an hour a day, you know?
"Hahaha! That's not even long enough to reach a save point, these days!"
"What is he talking about..."

Unfortunately Excellen's out of uber-rifle ammo, so she's stuck using her little arm cannons post-movement. They're not so impressive against Tenzan.

Tempest catches up to Kyosuke.

"Your days of banditry are over."
"Hmph. With so few people, you're not in a position to say that."
"Not when it's all we need to get the job done."

Tenzan gets down low enough that I feel safe moving Kyosuke off the palace.

Kyosuke and Excellen team up to bring the gamer down, leaving just Tempest. Also I was wrong about Kyosuke's luck holding out, and you can see why putting your guys toe-to-toe with Tenzan is a risky proposition.

Also Excellen got RNG'd into oblivion by Tempest right after this and I had to reload, hence why Kyosuke's health is full in the next shot.

Bullet is able to take off a decent chunk of the Stork's health on every attack with reasonably little risk; once Tempest is below 10000-ish health, Kyosuke casts his new Valor spirit and moves in for the kill.

And with Tempest out of the way, that's a wrap. Excellen comments that we just had to believe in ourselves. Kyosuke says they'll have a talk about this later, though she doesn't seem too worried.

Joyce is properly grateful for our help, and isn't sure how to properly reward us. Kyosuke is happy just to get back to the real mission. Excellen tries to voice a couple of reward suggestions, but when he turns on her, she falls back on suggesting that the DCs might attack again if they leave. This leads Bullet to ask why they were here in the first place, and Joyce explains about Shine and her abilities (Bullet: "Like Ms. Radha's?" Excellen: "Wait, so she can see what I've been up to?"). No doubt the DCs want to harness her powers somehow; Excellen points out that nobody wants to fight an enemy who can see the future, though Kyosuke surprises nobody by saying that he'd just go on intuition anyway.

Bullet tries to drag the conversation back on topic. Joyce asks if they can take the Princess somewhere safe, and Excellen immediately suggests the Far East Base; it'll be well-defended, and the seafood is delicious. Bullet heartily agrees (though he's not sure what the seafood has to do with anything), while Kyosuke remains silent.

Back aboard their shuttle, Bullet is struggling with the proper protocol when addressing royalty. Kyosuke tells Excellen to escort Shine to her cabin. Excellen asks if he's not worried that she'll teach Shine something weird, but he just tells her to behave - he's not good with children.

"I beg your pardon?"
"Hmm?"
"Isn't that a bit rude? Address me as a lady."
"We'll be bringing you to Japan. Please try to get some rest... milady. Satisfied?"

"I'm not really feeling it. What about you, Shiny?" ('Shiny' being Atlus' version of 'Shine-chan.')
"No, I'm 'OK' with that."

(Wait, you're okay with being called 'Shiny?')

Then we have the same scene with Adler and Egret at the Earth Cradle.

Next time: :smith:

Yeah that's a kick in the dick. Also it's around now where Kyosuke and Ryusei's routes stop being "different parts of the war" and fall down into "One of these events actually happened and the other is just padding" As far as the game is concerned, the Ryusei route is canonical, so as awesome as the ATX dweebs beating the same force the entire Hagane took on, it only exists as Excellens wild retelling to the new recruits.

It doesn't help that Kyosuke and Excellen have access to one of the most effective weapons in the series, the Rampage Ghost combination attack, making them even more valuable in-game. But yeah, I'd say they are very much like Batman in that the lead producer, Takanobu Terada, is a big fan of the duo and thus puts them into the spotlight more than they need to be, while doing very little to advance their characterizations (OG2 portion aside). Granted, the over-saturation of the ATX Team doesn't get too bad...until OG Gaiden. And then promptly is dialed back for 2nd OGs for the most part....outside of Kyosuke being the best choice for one of that game's unique gameplay mechanics. But that's one aspect as opposed to being in your face nearly all the time as we'll see eventually.

Then again, it took 5 games for the OG dev team to realize that Bullet has as much of a personality as Scott Summers/Cyclops does and demote him to second fiddle, so...yeah.

So... as most of you already know, and as the last couple of you have probably guessed, in a couple of missions Team Ryusei and Team Kyosuke are going to be officially united and they're going to stay together for the remainder of the game. That also means we're going to have roughly twice as many units, which means it's time to start benching people.

Ordinarily I'd just take a vote and go with that, but since I'm doing both routes side-by-side there's no real reason not to use one set of pilots with Ryusei and another set with Kyosuke (being forced to use Giado notwithstanding). I figure I'll deploy the entire Hagane crew in Ryusei's missions, the entire Hiryu crew in Kyosuke's, and then I'll figure out how to fill in the remaining slots afterward.

This, so much. I hate having to choose who to bench, and Z2 was by far the most painful about it due to the sheer amount of units (not to mention having more series I've watched than any other SRW), and I played Z after it and felt truly surprised that I had no idea who to put to fill squads, since every character I liked and some I didn't were already going to be deployed. It was a truly unique and awesome experience that I desperately miss.

OG1 has few characters though, so you can safely deploy everyone you want and just leave the characters you dislike behind, you won't have any problems. Now OG2 and OGG are far less kind on this due to getting more and more cool characters, you will be forced to leave behind people you'd want on your team at all times, and it's not nice. No idea about 2ndOG (god that is still stupid) since I haven't played it, but I doubt the Pair system (which looks far better than OGs') did enough to fix this.

It actually did quite a lot. I ended up using a lot of the random boring units the game hands you, just because I ran out of A-listers I actually liked.

And speaking of characters who don't have personalities, I'd be hard pressed to bring up Bullet before Irm. I cannot stand Irm. At least Bullet has a handful of interesting character traits... in OG1, that get pushed to the wayside later, but still. Irm basically has his womanizing and nothing else.

Then again, I might like Irm more if I played 4 or F, since those were basically his 'origin story' that he didn't get to have onscreen in OGs, right?

Put him in the hands of someone like Whedon, and you've got an interesting and entertaining developmental arc to watch. Put him in the hands of the jackass who wrote AvX, and we get "he killed one man as Dark Phoenix, he's a monster! *completely overlooking the -inhabited planet- the previous Dark Phoenix ate...* "

Yeah, in OG1 you can pretty much just dump the absolute lowest performers and field everyone else. I usually ended up using Bullet anyway on GBA, but I benched him in my last OGS playthrough in favour of Rio and didn't feel like I suffered any for it.

Of course the ruler of all lean casts is Alpha 2, which will let you take every single unit into the final battle. It's really great being able to field your entire army against the final boss...even if you do tend to end up using the same squads over and over again.

This is why the squad system is the best idea SRW ever had and taking it out of Z2 was stupid as hell.

Gods yes. Any SRW with a large cast could benefit from a Squad system.

As long as it doesn't get out of control.

Like Alpha 3.

Well, I've been playing through L lately and the ability to pair up the entire cast at the start of a mission does wonders for everyone's usability. Its no squad system, but it works well enough.

How is L anyways? I never hear much words about it. I've finished the LP of W which looks awesome and I know people complain about all of the things in K but I know very little about L.

L can be best summed up as "Okay, we're the new guys. Let's take what the other guys tried in K, and actually make poo poo work". L was made by a (mostly) brand new team of developers who managed to take K's broken Partner System and smooth out the problems. In addition, it has probably some of the best character interactions and a good story overall.

The main problem is that L came out in late 2010, and then 2-3 months later Z2.1 was announced and everyone dropped it. L is definitely worth it, it's just that people decided to move on to harping on about Z2.1 not being like its predecessor instead.

The animation quality is pretty drat good, though. Final Kaiser Blade looks the best its ever been, and just compare EVA-01 in L to how it looks in Z3.. Sure, the sprite is much higher fidelity, but the actual animations have more oomph to them.

Man, I could not disagree harder on Eva-01. It was one of the worst-looking units in L and the knife attack in L looks absolutely awful compared to the Z3 one (just as an example.) It barely is animated and just covers it with a pretty bad sparking effect.

Oh, I'm not gonna deny that. The knife is especially poorly animated, but really you're never going to use it in gameplay so I've never really looked at it. I honestly have to say though that the Jigoku-hen animations are...somewhat lacking compared to L's. Like with Berserk 01. Compare.

Ryusei Route, Mission 22

The Hagane arrives at the Far East Base, and Laker asks that Daitetsu be sent to his office once the docking procedures are finished.

Laker has received word from Norman Slay about the DC remnants, and it's a troubling possibility that they're already reestablishing themselves in a new base. He asks Daitetsu if he's heard of Project Ark. The captain has; it was a proposal to build a heavily-armored hibernation facility so that, in the event of a crisis, a few people might live on. The project had been proposed by Dr. Sophia Nate of EOTI, and resulted in the construction of the Moon Cradle; the Hiryu Kai ended up having to defend this same facility during the war.

Laker asks what Daitetsu would say if he heard there was a second facility, located on Earth. It's only a rumor - but if true, and if the Divine Crusaders got their hands on it, it would pose a greater threat than the Kurogane. In any case, it's not something that can be dealt with immediately; the Hagane's priority now is to remain at the base until the R-Series' adjustments are done.

:eng101:Omitted here is a scene where Ryusei goes to Ingram to request that Kusuha be discharged now that the war's over and they're safely home. Ingram refuses, saying that they have she has the same potential that he does; Ryusei presses him on whether this has to do with the T-LINK system, and Ingram responds by stonewalling him. Ryusei stalks off and Ingram smirks, thinking that Ryusei's starting to put it together.

Garnet's doing her thing again, though she has an excuse this time. The Princess needs a companion when she goes out in public, and that companion needs to look the part. Also, given their ages, maybe they'll look like friends rather than princess and bodyguard. Latooni still objects that the frills and everything stand out too much, but Shine also insists that she looks just fine.

"Except for those glasses. They make you look suspicious. I'll get you a present while we're out!"
(And this outfit isn't suspicious?)
"Did you want to say something?"
"N-no..."

Watching them, Garnet can't tell which one is supposed to be older. Joyce is a little dubious about Latooni's ability to serve as Shine's bodyguard, but Garnet assures him that she's quite tough - she could even work for the Sneaky Service! (Atlus) Giado corrects her, she largely ignores him, and the two girls head out the door, one a bit more eagerly than the other.

Ryoto and Rio pass them on their way in and immediately want to know what's going on; Giado explains that Shine will be meeting with some officials while she's in the country, and that they decided to assign Latooni as bodyguard. Ryoto is surprised to learn that Latooni knows martial arts too.

In any case, Giado and Garnet are heading out to do some sightseeing. Giado asks if Ryoto plans to visit home while he's here, but Ryoto says that with his father and sister doing their thing in the dojo, it's just going to be noisy. This gets Rio's attention, and he immediately shuts his mouth; if she finds out that his family runs a martial arts dojo, she'll be challenging him constantly.

The two of them are planning to head over to Chinatown in Yokohama. Rio wants to bring Kusuha along, but she told Ryoto that she has a special assignment. Strange; Aya told Rio the same thing...

Robert gets the word that he'll now need to do adjustments on the R-GUN as well, which is the last thing he wanted to hear. The work on the R-2 and Type-2 is behind schedule, and they haven't even had the R-3 boot up yet! Ingram tells him to leave the R-3 to Kenzo Kobayashi, but that doesn't satisfy Robert at all, given that it's the most temperamental one.

Jonathan: "He's right. It's as unpredictable as a beautiful woman. Then again, they are the most rewarding to tame..."
Robert: :what:

Ingram reminds the SRX tech that the R-GUN has already been successfully piloted by Viletta and Radha, but Robert insists that they just don't have the manpower for all this work. Ingram says not to worry; he's called in some assistance from Mao Industries. In walks Kirk Hamill. Kirk doesn't give Robert any time to get over his surprise at seeing his colleague; there's a lot of work to be done, so they may need to take... drastic measures.

You may or may not remember Kirk from Ryusei's first mission, where he was helping Elzam test the Gespenst Mk.II and basically just sat back and watched as Elzam ignored every single mission parameter to go charging into a swarm of alien drones with an unarmed test mech. He's probably just a bit closer to Ingram's school of thought than Robert's.

Kirk elaborates that they still lack combat data for the R-2 and Type-2. Ingram, however, says that he's already made arrangements. Robert asks what they are, and gets only a "you'll see..." in response. Somehow this doesn't fill him with confidence...

Mission 22: R-1 vs. Alteisen

Hans asks Laker if he's all right with an impromptu mock battle being scheduled just for some machine adjustments, but the commander is content to leave the SRX Project's development to Ingram as they've always done. At the same time, he is coming back to the base, and Laker notes that Hans seems a little on edge about this. Of course, Hans replies, since the man in question seems to bring misfortune wherever he goes; if Hans had his way, he would've been drummed out a long time ago.

Ryusei powers up the R-1, followed shortly thereafter by Rai in the R-2. The R-2's power output is fluctuating a bit, but it's still far more stable than the Huckebein was.

"Do they know who's piliting the Type-2 yet?"
"Not yet."
"W-what?!"

"All units, this is Command. It's irregular, but we'll be having a mock battle to test the new frames."
"Major Ingram, the briefing said nothing about this."
"That's why I called it irregular."
(Or that you changed it at the last minute...)

(Something's up... why's he being so mysterious all of a sudden? Aya's not here, either... and I haven't seen Kusuha in a while...)

"Command to G2. Engage manual operations."
"Ryusei, the new machine's starting."

"That's the Grungust Type-2. Who's piloting it?"

"G2, your frame is off-balance. Adjust your center of gravity."
"O-okay!"

"K-Kusuha!? Kusuha's piloting that thing!?"
"Command to R-1 and R-2. Once G2 is in position, we will commence the exercise."
"Wait a drat minute! Why is Kusuha piloting the new machine?!"
"You don't need to know that."

"It's okay, Ryusei. Whatever Major Ingram might say... I'm piloting the Type-2 because I want to do this. I know I can do this."
"B-but... do you realize what you're getting into?"
"I do. Aren't you and Ryoto and Rio doing the same thing? And if the Aerogaters attack, things can get so much worse... If I can help to prevent that, I will."
"Kusuha..."

:eng101A lot more confidence and maturity overall, compared to the original. In OG1 Ryusei basically yells at Kusuha to get out of the mech right now in front of everybody, and she complains that he never stops to consider the way she feels.

Further conversation is cut off by word of an incoming heat source. Ryusei thinks it's the DCs, but then this jerk shows up.

Jonathan demands to know what Kyosuke's doing here (and gets ignored.) Ryusei and Rai both recognize the Gespenst's design, but something's different about this one...

Kyosuke casts Guard and takes a free swing at Ryusei.

The R-1's reactions are good enough that Kyosuke figures the pilot isn't just coasting by on his machine's capabilities.

Kyosuke's arrival is followed by that of Excellen and Bullet. Rai recognizes both machines, and by now has figured out what Ingram intends. Ingram assigns targets: the Alteisen for the R-1, the Weissritter for the R-2, and the Huckebein Mk. II for the Grungust Type-2. Their mission is simple: fight until their enemies have been destroyed.

Ryusei: "What!? You've gotta be kidding me!"
Excellen: "Oh, it'll be fine. Hmhmhmm... don't tell me you're scared, little boy?"
Ryusei: "Little?!"
Kyosuke: "Excellen, that's enough. R-1: if you value your life, you'll eject now."
Ryusei: "Don't tell me you're serious about this?"
Kyosuke: "My orders are clear."
Ryusei: "Then I'm not going down so easily! Come on!"

Jonathan and Robert want to know why Kyosuke and Excellen are here, and why the ATX and SRX teams are being set against each other, but Ingram is in Ingram mode and isn't listening.

Objectives. Bringing the Alt below 40% health is the victory condition; doing so within 4 turns and without destroying it gets us the battle mastery.

You might recognize the Far East Base map from back in Ryusei 8, when we were launching the Hagane for the first time. We have a little less opposition to deal with this time around.

On our own side, we finally get our hands on another R-Series mech; the R-2 is sort of like the Schutzwald, being not as evasion-capable and more heavily armored than most reals. It's missing the jumbo shoulder cannons for now, but happens to be equipped with a removable gun that has the same range. I guess that works out.

And then we have Kusuha in the Grungust Type-2, sort of a smaller and less grotesquely destructive Grungust. But it's still fun.

As far as Kusuha goes, she doesn't have a lot to show right now: Telekinesis, support skills, and Mental. The last one is important, because it means that along with Strike and Focus, her spirit list includes a really cheap Guard.

Of course none of that matters at the moment, because for some reason Kusuha can't actually do anything. No movement, no spirits, no nothing.

Well, enough about that. Ryusei pairs up against the Alt, and as you can see, it's really not much of a contest (plot armor notwithstanding).

"Don't think you can beat the Alt in close combat."
"That's my line! Close combat is my specialty!"

Keep in mind that Kyosuke still has Guard active from the scripted bit earlier. He also has quite a bit more health than the "real" Alt does. (Also, this is what the Alt's Heat Horn attack looks like. I don't think I've ever actually used it myself.)

"They said this was a prototype... so this is what they're planning to use against the aliens."
"Tch, so much power... this isn't just a modified trooper!"

Rai can't reach the Weissritter on his first turn.

On the enemy phase, Kyosuke doesn't move at all, but Excellen zips ahead to take a shot at Rai. It's a slightly more even matchup than Ryusei vs. Kyosuke.

"Come here, white knight!"
"Hmhmm... have a look at what Weissy can do!"

Like Kyosuke, AI Excellen is both bigger and less dangerous than she is when you're actually using her.

"Hmm. I heard this was the R-2's first outing, but you're not bad!"
"Enhanced mobility... and it can fly as well. But that's not a problem for me."
"That's no good. It's not healthy to overstress yourself. Let's finish this quickly, okay?"
"That won't be so easy. You'll wish you hadn't been paired up with me."
"Ooh, you're so decisive, handsome. I'm getting all fired up!"

On the other side of the field, Bullet goes straight for Kusuha - who has no combat options at all, not even attack or defend.

"The mass-production prototype for the Grungust? They're not holding back!"
"!!"

:ohdear:

"Ugh...!"
"Why aren't they fighting back!?"

"Sergeant Kusuha, what are you doing? Return fire."
"I... I can't just attack an ally...!"

Come on, Kusuha, how are you going to defend the Earth from the Aerogaters if you can't even kill one lousy Bullet. :colbert:

"If you don't defeat them, you'll die."
"B... but that's..."

This meets immediate pushback from Jonathan and Robert, who both say that Kusuha's not ready for this kind of pressure yet.

"Command to H2. Continue your attack on G2. Don't worry about the damage."
"!"
"That's an order."

"B-but... isn't this just supposed to be training?"
"Ugh... you want me to beat up on somebody who can't fire back? That's not fair!"
"W... what do I do...?"

Bullet: "...This is H2! My frame's had a mechanical failure. Unable to continue combat!"
Kusuha: "...Huh?"
Operator: "What? We're showing nothing on the readings!"
Bullet: "Over and out!"

Bullet cuts his transmission, ignoring the operator's attempts to get a response. Watching this, Excellen comments on the recklessness of youth.

So Bullet's now out of the game, leaving us with just the Alt and Weiss to fight. Let's make it just the Alt.

(That woman acts careless, but she's already marked the R-2's weaknesses.)
"Sorry, looks like my gun's got a longer range than yours!"
"You might cut my flesh, but I'll break your bones!"
"Here I thought you were the cool, silent type, but now you're all hotblooded."

I suppose I should include a video of the R-2's Beam Chakram (and Excellen's defeat quote.)

"Kyaaaaah! Kyoooosukeeeee! ...Oh, who am I kidding, he wouldn't come anyway."

"Wow, I really screwed up... guess it's up to you now, Kyosuke!"

Had Excellen made it through this round, she and Rai would have a little more banter:

quote:

Rai: "I see... you sacrificed armor for mobility. That's why they gave you the Tesla Drive and a long-ranged weapon."
Excellen: "Hmhmm... yeah, Weissy's a bit of a double-edged sword. Guess I'll just have to make sure it cuts you first!"
Rai: "Then stop playing around."
Excellen: "!"
Rai: "I know you're avoiding the R-2's drive unit."
Excellen: "Oh, was it that obvious?"
Rai: "Usually I wouldn't care... but if you don't fight for real, this combat data is useless."
Excellen: "So you figured out why they're doing this... alrighty then. Just for you, I'm going to cut loose, big boy!"

Ryusei continues his work on Kyosuke.

"Don't think you can get away."
"Same to you, pal!"

That's a bit more like it.

"Ugh... this guy's good!"
"And I can see how you lived through the DC war."

On the enemy phase Kyosuke comes after Ryusei again. I'll probably kill him if I use the T-LINK Knuckle again, so we'll stick with the dinky G-Revolver.

:toot:

Ryusei decides Kyosuke is tough enough that he needs to finish everything quickly, and resolves to put all his power into the next shot. He casts Spirit twice in the process. Kyosuke, seeing all of the R-1's energy being diverted to its hand, is intrigued and decides to ready a trump card of his own. Robert boggles at them both.

(video)

Kyosuke: "Let's do this, R-1."
Ryusei: "Heh... planning to take it head-on? You've got guts. I like it!"
Robert: "Stop that, both of you!"
Excellen: "Too late! Kyosuke loves situations like this."
Kyosuke: "Put a sock in it, Excellen..."

"This is my ultimate attack! T-LINK KNUCKLE!"

"Ugh... the left arm's inoperable... but the right arm is plenty. Time to play my trump card, R-1..."

...That could've gone better.

:eng101: In the original, this was a scripted battle encounter with both mechs ending up at critical health. Here it looks more like Ryusei charges in and gets his poo poo handed to him.

Ingram decides his vicarious bloodlust is sated for one day and calls an end to the exercise. Ryusei bemoans ending the fight with a double KO, but Kyosuke is quick to commend his skill in catching him off-guard. Ryusei returns the compliment, and they make their belated introductions. Ryusei recognizes Kyosuke's name as the Raubtier's former pilot, and Kyosuke says that their little match here was fun and they ought to do it again.

Kirk is quite satisfied with the combat data. Jonathan asks what he thinks of Marion Radom's Alteisen; it's certainly an audacious design, but he can see why she wanted to call it the Mark III. Jonathan points out that she designed the Alt and Weiss specifically to show Kirk up, but Kirk's just thinking about the new ideas she's given him for the R-2's enhancements.

Meanwhile, Robert is having a confrontation with Ingram. What, exactly, does he think of Ryusei and Kusuha and the rest? Knowing the response he'll get, Ingram refers to them as "samples." Robert doesn't take well to this; he doesn't design mechs just so pilots can die in them! Ingram responds that his attitude won't stop the Aerogaters, but Robert doesn't care; a mech can be replaced, but a pilot can't. (Jonathan is quick to agree with this... especially with the women. :quagmire: )

Bullet's received a proper dressing-down from the higher-ups for his actions during the exercise, complete with a promise of time in the brig if he pulls the same stunt again; Kusuha worries that she got him in trouble, but he's quick to reassure her that it was entirely his own decision and he's willing to accept the consequences.

Excellen chides Bullet for being too soft, but for once Bullet isn't taking it lying down. After all, Excellen was going easy on the R-2 herself. She cheerfully replies that her policy is to treat a hunk like a flower, and find a way to make him look better.

Rai couldn't care less about her policy, but he's plenty satisfied with the data he collected from fighting such an... unusual machine. Excellen doesn't miss the sarcasm, but brightly responds that if the data was so good, he should thank her by asking her out. Rai reacts as you'd expect, even if Excellen is only joking.

Bullet: "Cut it out, Lieutenant. You're embarrassing me."
Excellen: "Oh, that's right! I suppose you want to look good in front of Kusuha, huh?"
Kusuha: "...Huh?"
Bullet: "Th... th... that's got NOTHING to do with it!"
Excellen: "Oh, wow. That's no good, Bullet, she'll figure it out in no time if you react like that. Just kidding, Kusuha!"
Bullet: "S-sorry... I'm not much good at this."

Kusuha: "...In any case, it's nice to meet you, Brooklyn."
Bullet: "It's good to meet you too, Kusuha. And, uh... you can call me Bullet. Everyone does."
Kusuha: "Okay... Bullet."

Ryusei introduces himself here as well, but seems more interested in making sure that Kusuha's really OK with all this. She promises him that she is; if he and Bullet are going to be fighting, she's going to as well. He accepts this, but something's still not right... why did Ingram put Kusuha, of all people, in the Type-2?

:eng101: The part with Ryusei at the end wasn't in the original.

Giado and Garnet come back from their shopping trip, followed by Rio and Ryoto from their eating trip. Rai introduces Excellen, and she tells him to make sure it's "Miss Excellen, your new teacher" for all future introductions.

"Teacher? You have a teacher's license?"
"Uh, don't listen to anything she says, Lieutenant."
"Oh. Okay."

Latooni and the princess haven't come back yet, but Ryusei figures that as long as Rai's around, they'll know, because...

Shine: "Sir Raidieeeese!" *glomp*
Rai: "Ugh...!"
Ryusei: "Right on schedule! You sure are popular, Rai."
Rai: "A little help here..."

Shine complains that she was lonely without Rai around; Rai thought that's what Latooni was dressed up for, but it looks like she's completely worn out after their day. Excellen mistakes Latooni for the princess (or at least pretends to) and has to be corrected. Shine cries to Rai about how scary all those strange people were, though Latooni points out that it was Shine who kept wandering off after people. Rai questions her, and she tries to apologize for her natural curiosity, being in a new place and all. Ryusei says it's tough to be handsome, and Rai realizes he's not getting any help from his teammate's end...

:eng101:There's also a little added bit in here where Giado and Garnet talk about a costume performance by Great Raimon and Banpre-Kid, two of Banpresto's oldest characters.

Kyosuke reports to Laker to officially complete the delivery of the R-GUN and ATX units. Laker apologizes for the surprise combat exercise, though Kyosuke's taken the whole thing in stride. The commander is privately glad to see how Kyosuke has grown.

Less glad is Hans, who comments that Kyosuke still seems to have the devil's luck. His mood isn't improved by Kyosuke's assertion that he didn't need luck to survive the war, and at once he reminds Kyosuke that he can't just do as he likes here the way he did on the Hiryu Kai.

I missed that face.

Laker takes that moment to inform him that Kyosuke will be assigned to the Hagane; Hans blusters that they're untrustworthy, and that there's no telling when they'll defect to the enemy the way their former leader did. Laker, however, has heard nothing untoward from Captain Lefina and stands firm in his decision.

The alarm sounds; Kyosuke recognizes it as a AAA-class - no, even higher. Sakae picks up a transmission from Columna; there's been a large-scale gravity quake in the L5 sector...

Sopwith 7 reports to Camel E1 on its find - a massive object, easily the size of a space colony.

:eng101:For those not up on aviation and/or Peanuts lore, the Sopwith Camel was the plane reputedly used to down the Red Baron during the first World War.

He prepares to send a visual...

Only to be surrounded by Aerogater machines. They waste no time in destroying him.

The space map's a bit different now.

Atad: "The auto-planet Neviim has arrived at its destination, milady Levi."
Levi: "So... this is the Earth."

Galuin: "....."
Atad: "Our long journey is at its end. Ahahaha!"
Galuin: "EAR... TH..."

Levi: "Earth... a fertile planet... Now, let us reap our bountiful harvest."

So, now that the motherfucking Death Star has just materialized in Earth orbit, surely the DCs will realize that it's time to stop dicking around and focus on the real threat.

...Right?
