Developing story, details and sources are kind of mixed right now.

quote:

Rich Willis, who was at the track, said he didn't see exactly what happened but his sister down in Turn 1 did. He saw Stewart and Kevin Ward get into the wreck.

"People (who could see it better) said the guy got out of his car and was gesturing angrily at Tony Stewart when Tony Stewart came by during the next lap under yellow," Willis said in a phone interview. "He approached him and evidently when he was driving by the guy standing on the track gesturing at him, he gunned his engine.

"What happened was the back end kicked out and clipped the guy and the guy flew across the track."

Deadspin has a good collection of sources so far.

Several posts saying a life flight was cancelled and there's crime scene tape up. Doesn't sound good.

Has Darren Rovell come out with the monetary figures that Stewart might lose if sponsors pull out? It's important I know as soon as possible.

This happens in SAS and yeah, I'd say this is a story that will somewhat transcend the NASCAR thread. I'm sure the NASCAR fans here can find this thread and manage to contribute too.

No many eyewitness reports saw and heard Stewart slam the throttle kicking his car out and :nms: running him over and then sending him flying.:nms: Yeah with how things are slowly coming out and not getting dismissed, Stewart is completely hosed.

Considering this wasn't a NASCAR event, I'd say it deserves this.

Yeah if this dude is dead this is a huge bomb being dropped on the sports world. Frankly its bigger than Aaron Hernandez because it actually happened during a sporting event and involves a HUGE name in the sport.

Wrecking a dude, punching a dude, calling a dude an rear end in a top hat =/= running someone over.

Was. He has calmed down a lot from 10 years ago where every week he would get his rear end into trouble. Now it's like once a year... so he was due for his temper to blow, but this is pretty loving stupid he did.

He definitely used to be. I don't watch NASCAR as much as I used to, but I'd gotten the impression that he had kind of mellowed out and matured over the years. Like if this had happened in 2006 or something, maybe it wouldn't be nearly as shocking, but still.

Obviously a more informed fan can confirm or deny this.

No one wants to touch this with a 10 ft long pole. All of this is really fuzzy except Stewart hit a guy. I don't think ESPN wants to say anything dumb or Fox say anymore than an accident happened.

It'll probably be a couple hours before you hear something from the cops. There's a lot of notifications that have to be done, especially if this guy is dead/has life-threatening injuries.

So from what I've read, most of the people even somewhat connected to the sport are saying Stewart did it on purpose, based on how the cars react mechanically. Am I getting that right?
