I'm thinking about cutting my own hair, think it would be a pretty handy skill to have for saving money especially when I have kids.
I've got a receding hairline so don't really care all that much if I cock it up and have to shave the lot.
Basically so far what I've read is:

Wash hair, leave damp.
Comb hair.
Use comb to pull hair outwards.
Make little snips inwards (perpendicular) to the comb with a short pair of scissors.
Trim up with razor.

Anything I'm missing?

My hair is crazy long atm.

Is it just not worth doing? I am one of those people who don't like wasting money on stuff I can do myself but is this something that should be left to the pro's?

Yeah just cough up the $10 jfc. Do you really expect to be able to properly cut the back of your head with scissors? If you are doing your kids thats one thing but doing your own would probably take years and years of practice while looking like a loving idiot in the mean time.

I buzz my hair down with a #1 and still have to sit on the counter and contort just to view in the mirror and clean up my neck line. I even practice giving myself fades sometimes just to gently caress around but always take it all off in the end.

I cut my own hair. Not only is it a good way to save money, but the OP is right that your kids will much appreciate a haircut at home instead of having to wait around at a boring hair salon. If you have a touch of social anxiety like me, you don't have to worry about putting yourself in a situation where you have to explain to the barber/stylist what you want to do to their hair.. For the longest time I'd just bring a magazine and point at a celebrity whose hair I liked like some kind of mongoloid. Once I did a retard voice and said "that one!!" but eh, the barber didn't get the joke and it was really awkward, so I tipped him an extra $10 so he wouldn't think I'm too weird to work on again.

But...

You've basically got the technique right, but DON'T POKE YOURSELF! You'd be surprised at how often this happens when you're first starting out.

Here's the most recent cut I did myself:

You also will need to have a couple of mirrors to help see the back of your head (obviously) -- A little hack is to use one of those mirrors with the cabinets behind them that swing open on either side. I just put my head right up next to the folded-in mirrors and I can see myself kind of like in that scene from Enter The Dragon.

I'd be happy to answer your or anybody else's questions about cutting your own hair.

Either crop it down to a #2 buzz yourself, like a balding guy who has given up, or find a barber.
A good barber will make you not look like an rear end, and won't ask a bunch of questions that you clearly don't know the answer to regarding styling.

Seriously, any place I've gone to that calls themselves a "barbershop," rather than something like a hair salon or stylist, has just asked me how short I want it.

Ive been cutting my own using a razor comb. They are pretty cheap and are less likely to gently caress up your hair in comparison to scissors. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000UQE0GE

I was hoping to come up with an objection while banging on my desk, Your Honor. ...I didn't.
Cutting your hair is going to take practice, but if you read all the self-help tutorials that are out there and you're just looking for a simple symmetric style, I think you're safe. There's still a chance of loving it up, but since you already have long hair you can probably fix any screw ups by just getting a buzz-cut and trying again later.

One thing that helps me when it comes to cutting the sides is to bend my head til it's horizontal and combing the hair out til it's just hanging straight down. This makes it easy to cut the sides in a straight horizontal line. My hair is fine enough that it doesn't bend or curl when hanging down, so I don't know how well it works for other hair-types.

There's also a lot of youtube videos where you get to see how different guys do it and how it ends up looking.
Alpha m. has some self cut tutorials, but there are other tutorials as well if you don't like his style.

Sail when it's windy

My cube mate does it and has for about 8 years. Usually it looks OK, then it will be the most hilarious haircut ever and I get to laugh at him. He does it because he is cheap. I would expect similar results from you eventually.

Alternatively I pay $30 to get my hair cut after tip so what do I know, jokes on me.

Bad Angus! Bad!
My partner cuts his own hair, but uses a Wahl clipper kit ($20) and a simple cut -- either a modified Ranger cut (short on the sides, less short on top, his version is akin to the classic flattop), '90s skater undercut (basically the extreme version of the above), or a mohawk, and gets it professionally done at the WalMart salon every three months or so.

Cutting your own hair with scissors in probably a bad idea. If you're using a clipper, you can always go to a shorter guard to cover your mistakes; scissors can cut closer than an unguarded clipper if you really gently caress up.

The best option for a cheap professional haircut is to go down to the "bad" side of town and find a barber who advertises himself as such. Costs $5-7 (plus tip), and you get to chat with an awesome old black guy while in the chair.

There are two can't-fail options for cutting your own hair:

If you have a nicely-shaped skull, and especially if you're already balding, you could do the Jason Statham thing and shave your head. Or if your head is too shiny, just do the shortest buzz with an unguarded clipper.

Or you could just say "t'hell with it" like one of my high school votech instructors did, and pay for two haircuts a year -- he'd get a short buzzcut and a shave the day before school started, and agsin on the way home from the last day of school. He ended up looking like Grizzly Adams for most of the second semester, but he could pull off both.

I'm not a fascist. I'm a priest. Fascists dress up in black and tell people what to do.
Been cutting my own hair for ages using clippers, I basically just do a buzz cut with a fade, took some practice but it was worth it, currently I have pretty long hair and I have gotten good at cutting different lengths, thinning and such.

You can't get a haircut for $10 here and some of us don't have the kind of money to spare with two kids, house and cars and other cost of living stuff. I think 20-50 euros depending is what you'll pay for a simple cut and we don't have bad sides of anything in socialist paradise that we can visit for cheaper cuts.

As a professional stylist, this thread is really amusing. Please post more pictures of DIY haircuts you guys.

The one haircut that I totally agree you shouldn't pay for is an allover buzz cut with a short guard.
Buy some GOOD clippers (not those crappy $20 sets, I was issued those while I was in school and had them jam up and rip out hair, or the cheap plastic guards break and shave a spot down to skin) because spending $60-100 on good clippers is still cheaper than paying for haircuts in the long run.
I use the Andis bgrc clippers, and they are my favorite out of everything I've ever used because they're sturdy but not heavy, they've got a quiet motor, and you can open them up to clean out hair (which helps them last a lot longer). Remember to clean and oil your clippers before and after every haircut.
Also, do not under any circumstances, cut your hair on carpeted flooring. Outside or in a garage is the best because sweeping up every last bit of hair is impossible.

One dead giveaway I see on people who cut their own hair is that they neglect the 'finishing touches'. I always see guys with a decent #2 buzz or whatever, then like an inch of neck/back hair and a crooked neckline and hair poking around their ears with uneven sideburns. Most barbers will clean up your neckline and around your ears with a straight blade for a few bucks and it really pulls the whole cut together and makes it look sharp and all professionally done.

I cut my own hair and have since I was in high school. I do it because I am sometimes bored in the bathroom and have a half hour to kill/I have never cared much about hair. I took this picture between cuts, when the sides were really starting to get out of control:

You tell me.

I like clippers better than scissors for just about everything.

Nice job! I really dig this.
I would recommend getting some thinning shears and taking angled snips into the top, it's really easy. It'll take out a bunch of the weight there and texturize it so you can style it up all easy like. Tweezerman makes some that aren't terrible, but stay the hell away from Fromm. You can pick some up at Ulta or Sally's for like $20.
Here's a decent guide on how to do it:
http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Hair-Thinning-Shears

I cut my bangs and split ends strictly with thinning shears only, because it's impossible to misjudge the angle and accidently cut a stupid looking blunt line.

That is a really good point and I think I will invest in some thinning shears, especially now that I have a recommendation. I have so much hair and it grows out of control FAST. Thanks for the information!

I definitely know what you mean about bangs-- once my friend learned that I cut my own hair she started asking me to trim her bangs. I can't cut straight hair for poo poo and I feel I am always fighting a losing battle with hers :(

Count me among the people who cut their own hair, it's not like the $5 Korean barber shops were a great value.

That's why I started cutting my own hair. While I do sometime slip up and have the occasional stray hair behind my ear, I'm aware of that happening. It's easy to correct. I can just pick up a clipper and cut the excess long hair I missed behind the ears. Same with neckhair and sideburns, those aren't exactly hard to clean up. Assuming a person has a symmetrical face, it's not that hard to make sideburns symmetrical using ears as a guideline.

That's actually how most barbers ask me to describe my sideburns. Any sideburns that go past the bottom of the ear is for Elvis impersonators and hippies. Maybe civil war reenactors.
