I'm just starting to get in to X-Wing, and I know what everyone is saying is in English, but holy poo poo I have no idea what anyone is talking about.
I'm beginning to get the hang of some of the abbreviations, and some of the strategies but from reading this and other forums, I'm thinking this is not something I'd ever want to play competitively.

Thanks for the replies all. Are there YouTube battle reports or something I should watch that actually explain what's happening. I more or less understand the rules, but I'm not good at figuring out why a particular list is better then another. It would be nice to see some games played out where they explain how everything interacts.

My only complaint about that format is that it doesn't list the ship, and N00bs like me don't know what pilot goes with what ship.

edit: I suppose I can just click the link and look. Never mind. I am an idiot.

Are there any other upcoming releases that have been announced? I'm wondering what, if anything, they'll debut at GenCon this year.

Yeah, now that 11 will be out that will have to be the GenCon prerelease. It is a bit awkward, because they can't talk about the Last Jedi ships that will come out, what, two weeks after GenCon?

I'm guessing they're going to focus on the Legend of the Five Rings card game they have coming out at GenCon, rather then X Wing stuff.

I got the deep-well version of that Stanley box. If you've got access to a 3d printer, you can make containers for individual ships that also hold a few tokens and the ship dial. They're designed to fit in that case.

I'm hoping FF has a pile of older stuff at their booth at GenCon. I can't find a K-Wing anywhere, locally, or online

I don't understand, how can ships not give any sort of Margin of Victory? How is the rule broken? Maybe I'm just not grasping what everyone is talking about.

Take a game where you're flying against Corran and Miranda.

You can load enough damage into them to kill them both 3 times over and gain no points.

Miranda is harder to kill than any Jumpmaster except Dengar, and can cost over 50 points. You don't get points for half of her, but you do for half of a Lambda.

Because of their regen abilities? If they end the game with less then half hull/shields, you would get those points right? Is it that it's much harder to get them below half because of those abilities?

Funzo
Dec 6, 2002

thespaceinvader posted:

No.

Small ships do not give half points, ever.

Oh, ok. That makes more sense then. So the big issue is high hull/shield small ships, especially with regen abilities. I think I get the problem now.

Did Minefield Mapper ever become a thing? I know pre-release there was a lot of theory around using it.

Funzo
Dec 6, 2002

Some friends and I are planning a single ship free-for-all. The rules are 1 small ship, 35 point limit, no unique cards, and shield/hull points can't total more then 9.
I've played the least out of all of them, so actually winning is pretty unlikely. Instead, I'm thinking TIE Punisher.
Cutlass Squadron Pilot-APT-Unguided Rockets-Conner Net-Twin Ion Engine Mk. II. Maybe cruise missles instead of rockets, or a different bomb option. Any other fun Imperial builds I should be thinking about?

I'd like to start playing competitively, but still have a fun list. I'm looking at mostly just store events and stuff like that. Any thoughts on this list?

Omega Leader w/ Comm Relay, Juke
The Inquisitor w/ PTL, Cruise MIssles, TIE/v1
Whisper w/ Rebel Captive, Fire-Control System, Veteran Instincts, Advanced Cloaking Device

I'm only using stuff I've actually got cards for, which is a little limiting, but I've got a least one copy of most stuff at this point.

Autothrusters is basically an auto-include for Inquisitor. He wants to always be at range 3. Proxy or borrow the card.

Proton Rockets are probably better than Cruise Missiles on Inquisitor, because, again, he wants to stay at range 3. Prockets are a huge deterrent to people trying to get into his face. They can let him hang out at long range where he's strongest...or get hosed up by Prockets.

I'd rather have Autothrusters than either missile on Inquisitor.

Omega Leader is perfect, and Whisper is pretty good. Only the crew is up for debate there, but Rebel Captive isn't a bad choice.

Possible alternatives to Rebel Captive include Recon Specialist, Agent Kallus, Gunner (if you can find the points) and Intelligence Agent. An Intel agent would free up the points you need for Autothrusters on Inquisitor and you can still keep the missile. :)

Awesome, thanks. I'll get rid of the missile and put in Autothrusters. My oldest is learning to fly Scum, so I guess I can always get a Starviper and borrow the card.

A friend and I are planning on playing a fun fluff game. The idea being lots of dogfighting and piles of ships. Here's what I'm looking at:

100 points

Darth Vader [TIE/x1, Swarm Leader, Sensor Jammer] (32)

Black Squadron Pilot [Crack Shot] (15) x 2

Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13) x 2

Academy Pilot (12)

I think he's playing a stripped down A,X, and Y-wing list, maybe with turrets on Y-Wings.

I mainly just want Vader and a pile of TIEs. Perfect points efficiency isn't really the goal.

Shouldn't that be the Alpha-class gunboat?

Played a game this weekend with dumb fluff lists. It was my Darth + 5 TIE list vs. an AAXXY list of all rookie pilots. Neither of us had played in a while, so we got a couple of rules wrong, but it was a lot of fun. It cam down to my Academy Pilot TIE vs. his rookie Y-Wing. I lost my TIE, his Y-Wing had 1 hull left.

Ship Total: 36

One bomblet drop killed 3 ships. Granted, 1 was my other TIE Bomber because I misjudged, but it was still awesome. Drop a Bomblet out the front, barrel roll away, Adv. Sensor to a focus, then 4K behind enemy ships....feels good. And at PS 6 it doesn't feel OP and I don't feel like a dick playing it.
This will never work in a 'competitive'setting, but I have a feeling I am going to try and make this work in a 'competitive' setting.

Let me see if I have the order correct. I'm still learning everything, so bear with me.

1. Use Adv. Sensors, gain a focus
2. Reveal 4K on dial
3 That triggers bomblet generator, which you launch out the front.
4. barrel-roll, due to pilot ability
5. execute the 4K move.

Does that sound right? I'm terrible at figuring out how abilities all work together.

I was looking at that Deathrain Aces list that got posted earlier, and I wanted to give it a try. However, since I don't have all the cards for the Vader build, I was going to try subbing in Quickdraw with the title+FCS+LF. So, some speculation for System Open 2018:

Adepticon's preregistration event lists has System Open Stage 1 at 300 people on Friday from 10-3:30, then System Open Stage 2 for 128 from 4:30-9:00. Then Finals for 28 on Saturday from 10-3:30. So it looks like the two-days of qualifiers are out.

There's also Hyperspace Qualifiers on both Thursday and Saturday for 128 people, so I'm guessing we're also getting X-Wing versions of the Galactic Qualifiers that were announced for Destiny yesterday. If that's the case, looks like they'd be 7 rounds of swiss and the undefeated player gets a spot at Worlds.

I saw that too. Some friends and I are going to try and sign up for the open. I'll get crushed in the first round, but it will be a fun experience anyway. I may very well play the Deathrain Aces jankmaster list.

I think that's the best RAC. Vader with ATC/Engine is base 34 points, so you can drop Dauntless if you want to run Vader and want to run a good EPT like predator.

Played a few games with that Deathrain/Inquisitor/Quickdraw list I posted earlier and it did not go well for me. It was my fault, I just couldn't get the strategy to work. Quickdraw is fine (might want Harpoon instead of Cruise), but your gunboats are way too heavily loaded. You'll never use autoblaster, ion, AND the missiles in the same game.

You either want three Nu Squads with Harpoons/chips/title, or you want to go up to Rhos with Harpoons/chips/maybe extra munitions, and an EPT like predator or deadeye.

I'm not sure why Ion Cannon showed up, since that's not even in the list. Quirk of the list builder I guess. In any case, I re-built things.
