Why do we want to commit so many personnel, some of which are irreplaceable/extremely rare? Just swarm it with skulls, get an idea of what's going on in there and then either torpedo it or send in the specialists depending on what they find. It's not going to waste more than a few hours, a day at the most be be a little more cautious. Seriously, it could just be another bomb plot/family video night scenario. Have we learnt nothing?

They're level one DH characters, destined for glory or death, but probably death. The only reason they're not cheaper than servo skulls is because we took 90% casualties on the beast, and have a lot of skulls lying around. But it's a close call.

We can see through the skulls eyes, mentally control them, hack kitchen appliances and effectively personally interact with objects from several kilometers away. Tribunes are useless cannon fodder until they die and then they become useful.

And here we go! Nothing Drastic You spoke carefully, like you were talking to a bomb. “Ching Shih… according to our legal traditions, you have a claim to the Dynasty. And depending who you talk to, you have a better claim than mine, since you are credited as Founding it. And the Iron Hands said they’ll back you. So I have to know - do you plan to throw us into civil war once again?” “Take over? Oh, no. I’ve only got a two centuries in command, you probably have three times that.” Caroline coughed. Ching Shih blinked, asked a question. “How long have you been in command?” “About six months.” “Oh.. but you are probably a millennium old.” Caroline coughed again. You stared at her. “Do we have a problem?” “No, Lord-Sire. I’m fine.” “Keep it that way. Go ahead and tell her I’m twenty four, since you are so determined to.” Chirp chirp. Ching Shih put her head in her hands. “Oh my god, I’m surrounded by children. Who still believe fairy tales.” Fabiyan spoke. “My wife does herself a disservice. Those six months were a power struggle worse than any in the Family’s history, and a hundred thousand people lie dead from it. She succeeded over a dozen claimants, many of them as old as you, and now everyone aboard literally worships her.” Ching Shih narrowed her eyes. “You made a cult of personality for yourself?” Fabiyan shrugged. “And for me. And you, technically. We’re all worshipped as saints under the God-Emperor.” “Because of course we are. Look, I have to ask, why do you have this whole ‘faith’ thing? It’s really, ludicrously, bizarre. Enjoy some materialistism or something, it’s how we got out here.” “And Faith is how we survived out here. You really have no idea what’s out there in the dark.” “Sure.” She shrugged. “Show me. I’ll believe you if you can. Summon up a demon or-” Just like that, Fabiyan’s gun was pressed into her temple, his voice low and angry. “You need to understand. You child. Things have changed. Summoning a daemon could kill anywhere from dozens to billions of people. This is not some power scheme. This is not a lie we tell the lessers. This is survival of our species. We found something in the dark, and now it hunts us.” The Iron Hand growled, a low sound beneath hearing. Fabiyan looked up at the mountain of flesh as his wings flared, radiating light. “Do you really want to have this discussion with me?” The mountain grumbled, but subsided. Fabiyan lowered his gun as he continued. “You want to protect her, she needs to know this.” Ching Shih was looking at his wings in startlement. “I know that sufficiently advanced tech is indistinguishable from magic, but wow.” “This is Faith, child. Understand this - humanity is on the verge of becoming a psyker species. All of us. And the side effects, our nightmares, our manias, our terrors - are given form in the Warp.” His voice was a hammer. “And. They. Hunt. Us.” Something in his voice or manner seemed to convince her, at least for now. You paused, thought of something. “Ching Shih, in our histories, your ship - this ship - was labeled as being Dark Mechanicus. Why?” She considered it. “Well, I didn’t write them, obviously. But - in my time, the Dark Mechanicus were the ones who believed Lorgar.” “Same here.” She paused. “Well, no. The ones who believed in the divinity of the Emperor - like you - were a minority. Radicals. They were called Dark Mechanicus because they ignored what came out of the Neo-Enlightenment.” “I don’t know what that is.” “You call it the Dark Age of Technology. See how things change around? Values change. Labels change.” “So… these radicals took the ship?” That contradicted her earlier story. “No, listen. We - the atheist majority - took the ship, were investigating things. But to deal with that, explain the attack on Ultramar, we were labeled Dark Mechanicus in the histories.” “So what did you call the ones who fell to the Great Enemy?” She glanced away. “They were all Dark Mechanicus. In the current time, they still believe the Emperor is a god, a machine-god?” “Yeah. Some call him the corpse-god.” “Yeah. Two sides of the same Lorgar’s coin. One side of the Dark Mechanicus believes the Emperor is a god, and lives. That’s your faction. One side believes he is a god, and dead. That’s your Great Enemy. The other faction, the original ones who signed the Treaty of Mars, they are all gone.”

B.B. Rodriguez posted:Ask her how she thinks this is going to work, what with her being a confirmed spy for the Primarch of the infamous Alpha Legion and all. Ask the Iron Hands what they think, given that it's 10,000 years later. This is a solid start. My votes: 1) dont burn the warrant, its not only irreplacable, its evidence. Dont do that. Save/archive the hologram also. 2) investigate the ship. This is definitely some bullshit from our past (party composition: Psyker, tech-head, muscle, Family descendant/represantitive, inquisitor to keep them all in line and keep a nose out for Extra Smelly Bullshit.) 3) No murder just yet. Let the other side be the first to initiate hostilities. Instead, expand the meeting - saint fabiyan, the previous lord-sire, limosa, edouard - other people who would have our back if talks break down. In the ensuing discussion, bring up a handful of specific points: Ask them how they think this is going to work: Its been a seriously long time, and CS is woefully outdated on the state of the galaxy. Just...going out there with all intentions and zero resources/information(even if we let them) would just be disastrous. Point out that previous lord-sires retiring and coming back has precedent: you give up the seat, you give up the seat. We're under no obligation to hand over power. Even if we DID decide to hand a ship over, our only obligation is to the specific wreck within the beast - no doubt badly damaged/worn out - and we're headed into dock for repairs ANYway. No matter what happens, they're should stick around at least until we get to earth - if only to see how bad things have really become since CS's era... and discussions during transit are in everybody's best interest. Flex the power of the Inquisition. Anyone disagreeing gets hit with an inquisitorial acolyte summons, and/or a reminder that the beast itself can just be conscripted into service entirely. The point being, its in everyone's interests to work together short-term until things get figured out. Athena should definitely be on-standby for investigations into Mystery Ship and CS's ship within the wrecks of the beast: she may find other bits of technology that are theft-worthy. The main thrust is What do they plan on doing about it? The inquisition's job is, nominally, investigating conspiracies of this nature. Frankly, we HAVE a mentor that has experience in this area. The go-to guy for ridiculously convoluted, ancient, and long-term plots handled appropriately from the shadows is Kozilek. Just because we have graduated up from his interrogator doesn't mean he isn't a resource. It may, in fact, be the responsible thing to do. Ohone has a reputation, but we may also be in over our heads with this one. I'm also having a ton of fun imagining both the wording and kozilek reading such a letter. Ohone? Finding something Actually Scary beyond the intact STC at golgotha? Asking for advice on how to proceed? Gosh, truly the herald of the impossible! No need to spell out specifics, more general advice for how to proceed - cautious really isn't ohone's demonstrated strength. On a side note: Lowell, have you read the horus heresy novels? I was just reading up on some of the theories from those books involving the alpha legion being not-quite-entirely traitors or closet loyalists. It got me thinking. If a know-traitor legion is a secret loyalist, then its not that far-fetched that the reverse is true. It also calls heavily into question whether Guilliman is ACTUALLY in medical-stasis. Just saying, initiating a coup, faking my own death, and then ruling from the shadows makes a lot more sense as an Evil Gulliman move. There are issues with this depending on what you mean by Evil... 1) Gulliman has fallen to chaos. This Gulliman would have had countless opportunities to utterly destroy the Imperium or sacrifice it to the great enemy. The taint of chaos is a physical thing and Ultramarines have not show any signs. 2) Gulliman is secretly running the Imperium as a power hungry puppeteer. He doesn't need to. He can literally come out of hiding and pretty much take charge of the Imperium without any issues of complaints. Also, we would probably be gunning to join this guy, not oppose him.

Even assuming we take her at face value, the idea that we're a faction of the Dark Mechanicus is silly and meaningless. Our faction has been the dominant technological organization in the Empire for thousands of years, working at least generally toward preserving humanity and their works. We can't simply decide that we and everyone else keeping humanity going is wrong and needs to die. At the very least we wouldn't be able to do anything about it even if we wanted to.

Trucemaking You tapped your fingers on the table. “I think we’re getting rather far afield. We need to know what you intend to do.” She cocked her head. “Is it normal in this time to announce I’m planning to take over?” “Are you?” Ching Shih shrugged. “When I was a Captain, I had the backing of the Imperial Army, the Primarchs, and the Emperor. Running out on my own, ten thousand years after my last post, with what, one Space Marine? I would need to have more faith than everyone here.” “That was my assessment as well. So what do you plan to do?” “Well, I need to learn about the current state of the galaxy. Maybe find a group with similar ideas. Someplace to call home.” You paused. “Yeah, that’s a really bad idea. Atheists get shot, servants of Alpharius get shot, people who attack Ultramarines get shot, and people who want to investigate daemons get shot. You’ll live slightly longer if you keep your mouth shut.” “The whole galaxy is like this, then.” “The Inquisition makes sure of it. It’s the only way to keep people safe.” She made a face. “That’s against everything the Emperor wanted.” “Yeah, don’t say things like that either. Talking about overthrowing the God-Emperor, or doubting his divinity, is another way to get shot.” Her voice became exasperated. “How do I avoid getting shot?” “Keep your head down. Don’t ask questions. Obey those set in place above you.” “What a dismal thing we’ve become.” “Humanity has done what was necessary to survive.” “Regimes always say that. I can’t believe I fell asleep and woke up to Nathan loving Dume having conquered the galaxy.” You pursed your lips. “We are going to keep you here, at least until you know the rules. Walking out like you are now, you’ll die within a hundred yards.” “I thought I was worshipped here?” “Ching Shih the Saint is worshipped, you are a half-xeno heretic who has served the Great Enemy. And we’re still not sure how far your deviance went.” “So I’m a prisoner.” “Did you think you would be anything else?” “I would have thought the future might be better than when I went to sleep, yeah.” You blinked at her, looked at Fabiyan. “Why in the name of Sanguinius would you think that?” Silence, then. You waited, then spoke. “We are currently recovering from the civil war. The ship is heading for repairs at Terra, which may take a few months to arrive. I suggest you take the time to learn more about things, and do not try to escape or start a coup. Even with your Iron Hands, we have a hundred thousand fanatics on this ship. Trying to escape,” you shrugged. “You’d probably be dead before I could even find you to stop them.” You glanced at Caroline. “We can leave your translator with you. She’s our Family historian, I expect you have a lot to learn from each other. Caroline, take notes on everything she says, I want any information on archaeo-tech, history, and her language.” You turned to the Iron Hand. “Is any of this going to be a problem?” The room was loud with silence, until finally: “We obey the pacts. We shall protect the warrant until she comes to claim it.” You narrowed your eyes at Ching Shih. “Don’t gently caress this up. You are eye-ball deep in a hundred different heresies, and I’m risking quite a bit by even letting you live this long.” Glanced at Fabiyan, Limosa. “Anything else we need to ask or tell her?
