I moved from the UK to Canada, and have just (6 years after I first arrived) gotten Permanent Residency, which allows me essentially to stay in Canada indefinitely. I would think that if you were both dead set on somewhere, it would probably be possible to make it happen, but it certainly wouldn't be easy. In your case if you don't want to move for at least the next 16 years due to your child, then just say that.
