I'm looking to get into Armada. I have the starter set, but what else should I get if I want to flesh out a 400-pt Rebel set?

Also, any goons in the NYC area looking to play?

WHAT OF OUR BARGAIN?
I've played a whole bunch of Rebellion, and it's really easy to play the Empire wrong. Whereas the Rebel player should probably run as many missions as possible, the Empire should be using half their activations, and use the other half to oppose some select Rebel Missions and (more importantly) expand your forces to as many territories as possible. If the Empire hesitates at all, or shows any mercy, they lose.

Ditto on the expansion. This game is great, but nothing compares to those first few games when you're being surprised by what the Rebellion and Empire could do. An expansion would hopefully bring back that magic.

I'll walk through my thinking bit by bit.

Objectives: Opening Salvo is a fine choice, but since you only have four ships, you run the real risk of going up against someone using a swarm of smaller ships and end up giving him the edge. First tournament I was in I ended up winning because a guy did this and I have 5 ships and he had 4 and I ended up killing his best ship from long range with all those extra red dice before he could do much damage back. Precision strike might help a good amount because if you're using Dodonna and you pick Structural Damage, you can burn a die from one of your ships and you have a 50/50 chance of triggering structural again. Love it. Hyperspace assault is fine, and most people will pick it when going against this list, so use Salvation or the Jaina's Light behind them and wait to spring it on them. I switched out Minefields for Dangerous Territory because the MC80 might be a little tough to fly without Madine handy, and on top of that people seriously underestimate Dangerous Territory. I did two weeks ago. I got my MC 80 ready with a repair command, all set to land on an asteroid and recover the one measly hull damage, and was ready to be on my way. Unfortunately I landed on the damage card that got rid of all the shields on the hull zone that had the most, and suddenly there goes the 5 in my front arc while I was in the middle of rushing head-long into the center of my enemy's formation. Not good...

MC80: I kept it as is. There are some other builds that really work that you don't have the cards for quite yet, but as is it still does a ton of work, and fewer points means it won't be game-ending entirely if it dies.

Nebulon B 1: Salvation is a good title, but Enhanced Armaments is a waste on it. I traded it out with Spinal Armaments that came with the MC80. I also added the Intel Officer to force your opponent to make some hard choices. Finally, I switched it to a Support refit since you have no reason to blow those extra points for an extra squadron command on this guy.

Nebulon B 2: No need for defense liason, especially not with Leia around. I thought about making this one the Escort refit, but it wasn't worth the points in this build. They were better spent elsewhere. It might even be worthwhile to cut Yavaris, but you might be able to save a squadron token and get the two off you need to have your squadrons finish off an enemy ship at the right time or something like that. And Yavaris adds a lot more damage potential to Han.

CR90 A: Your B was tricked out, but it was too expensive and would want to get in too close. You're better off using Leia as support to make sure your other ships have the commands they need, and then use it as a sniper from distance. If you decide to get more ships in the future, I'd get the MC30 next and use the Turbolaser reroute circuits from it on the CR90A. That upgrade on CR90's is horrendously good. They nerfed it recently, and still it is king of the roost.

Squadrons: B-wings are great, but they were too slow and without a ship with Intel to keep them from getting tied down I think they'd end up being a waste. Instead, I replaced them with A-wings. A black anti-ship dice is pretty good, and their speed coupled with counter make them punch above their weight in holding off enemy squadrons. X-wings are solid and all around good, and while they work at cross-purposes with the A-wing's counter, they can help out Han and are a solid squadron in any capacity. Finally I added Han since he's like a mini-ship all by himself. Be careful not to get him too bogged down with enemy squadrons since those 7 hull vanish quick, but if those X-wings keep him safe you can have him dealing consistent damage better than most of your ships.

Finally, with a 5 point bid that gives you a decent shot of going first, which works great for making sure your MC80 gets the shots off that it wants at the start of a round. If you're going up against a small-ship swarm fleet I'd consider going second, since they can annoyingly out-activate you and force you to move somewhere you don't want to be. However, if they have 6 or more ships then you're hosed with that either way and stick with first.

This may not be public knowledge outside of certain local Armada scenes where playtesters are pulled from, but the current plan is wave nine is going to be card packs and "something else" with the idea the card backs will be useful for folks who will be picking up the new Clone Wars core set coming out shortly thereafter. They're currently working on/finalizing wave 10.

The good news is Armada is pretty healthy in comparison to a lot of their other games. The SSD seemed to spark a lot of interest in the game, and folk who pick it up seem to stick with it and by product at a more regular rate than X-wing. They just need to expand the player base, which the Clone Wars core set is geared to do.

The bad news is they just lost one of the lead developers in the layoffs.
