Well, fuck. Really?

The truth is out there.

It finally happened. Three months ago, the phone you were given by your Aegis contact finally buzzed; in all the time you've had it, it's never shown any bars, it's never been able to send or receive texts or calls, and you never recall ever charging the drat thing. The voice on the other end of the phone was smoky and calm, giving you directions to a drop point where you picked up a key to a safety deposit bank that ultimately held your HERMES communicator-slash-uplink and a manual on its use. You pack up what little you have, say your goodbyes and the rehearsed excuses, and make your way.

With the uplink, you were able to get on the right planes, the right trains, and get in the right cars to end up fifteen miles outside of New York City, at your new home away from home: stately Selenay Manor, a sprawling and well equipped estate far away from prying eyes that was secretly acquired by Aegis back in the 1960's. A quick flip through the file on the estate shows that the public story is that some benefactor of an Aegis front company was the owner of the estate, and had donated the manor to a front corporation that has made it into a 'corporate retreat;' ever since, it's been protected by the latest in commercial security, with excuses about corporate espionage keeping normal people out of Aegis' hair. The true backstory seems to involve a doomsday cult that had attempted to use the psychic power of New York City itself to rip the earth apart, and the resulting cover up netted Aegis a nice little retreat.

A five minute ride up to the private estate later, and you're out of the car with your bags in your hands.

-------

Within the manor foyer is a thin, unremarkable man who dutifully takes the bags of each person that comes in, handing them off to a gruff, muscular man with an earpiece and a fantastic mustache. The thin man introduces himself as Marcus, and simply directs you towards a coffee room. "Others will be coming. Please, have some coffee. You will have much to discuss." As he speaks, the gruff man, whose name tag says he is Gunter, rips through your belongings with zeal and purpose, scanning everything electronic with a small device; at least once, blue smoke curls from some device and Gunter grins, tossing it into a chute next to him. If questioned, he merely taps his temple and says, "Everyone's got eyes and ears somewhere."

The coffee room is fairly simple looking, with six plush chairs, a kitchen counter with a sink and various other niceties, and a bookshelf, with small end tables between each set of two chairs. Oddly, the room has no windows, and is a bit quieter than the rest of the house. Despite all of the decorations in the room, one wall is left entirely blank, though you can faintly make out the Aegis symbol on the wall if you squint just right. The air is already filled with the smell of fresh coffee, and someone has kindly left out various creamers and sweeteners, as well as a few light snacks.

Welcome to Con-X! You're all arriving for the very first time to your new headquarters, and will now have the chance to meet everyone. This is the day of the last arrival, so it's possible you arrived earlier than the others, but I'm going to say no one has been in the manor long enough to know their way around completely. If you got there early, then either Marcus or Gunter has snagged you to wait in the meeting room for the others.

Let's get crackin'!

Each agent also has access to their personal vehicles and homes, congruent to their Resources level. Most of you will probably have a used car or lower-to-mid end vehicle registered in your REAL name. Whether this is at the estate or not is up to you.

You will also need to designate your two workspaces. Feel free to discuss this amongst yourselves ICly and OOCly; the estate is still essentially being set up for you. It MUST be a Craft, Medical, Electronics, Engineering, Humanities, or Science skill.

Also, you will need to determine, for your firearms, which kinds you have, or else assume they are all medium (9mm)

I'm noice, therefore I am.
Grimey Drawer
Martin Dash

Handing over a pair of beaten up duffel bags containing all his worldly possessions - in fact, the very same duffels he'd been issued in the military all those years ago - Martin stepped inside the well appointed house.

With a nervous glance down at what he's wearing, he vigorously stamps and wipes his dusty, untied boots against the mat, the loose laces slapping against his trouser leg.

"I could get used ta this," he exclaims with a low whistle.

At Marcus' direction, he walks through to the coffee room, idly running his finger along the polished golden wood decorating much of the house. As he approached he could hear the low murmur of noise from the room and remembered with a slight grimace of annoyance to turn up the gain on his hearing aids. As he did, the noises clarified into voices in conversation, idle discussion and introductions. Others had already arrived before him.

Pausing a moment to compose himself, he adjusted his jacket as it hung from his shoulders and straightened his back before walking in, head held high and a wry grin upon his face. The conversation faltered for a moment as the others took in the newcomer, some with smiles, others with just glances, but no one overtly unfriendly in their expression. He wandered over to the group nearest to the table with the refreshments and began to introduce himself as he fixed himself a black coffee to refresh himself from the trip.

Dressed as per picture above, wearing clean but utilitarian grey double-knee chinos and untied desert-coloured boots. Around his fingernails and in the creases of his hand is ground in oil and dirt from working with cars.

Nash sticks his hand out to the latest arrival. "Nash Callahan, US Marshals," he states, "Western Virginia district." Picking up another sponge finger, he adds, "I could get used to a place like this. Much better than a cheap motel."

Standard firearm for USMS (and many other federal and state departments) is a Glock 22, firing .40 S&W, which is close enough to 9mm to count as medium.

Jennifer Stetson

Jennifer quickly gets out of the car and gathers her bags from the back of the vehicle. An audible clacking is heard as her heeled feet make their way up the old flagstones that make up the drive. She pushes open the door and gladly hands off her bags to Marcus, "Thanks a lot Jeeves. Those things are heavy." As she makes her way back to the coffee room Gunter stops her and reaches for her purse. She hands it over and a quick scan later he gives it back, a slight sight of disgust on his face at the contents.

She makes her way to the coffee room and takes two coffee cups. She fills one with coffee and takes the empty one over to a chair in the corner. She fishes in her purse for a pack of cigarettes and lights one up, using the empty coffee cup as an ashtray. she then pulls a flask out of her purse and takes a pull before pouring some in her coffee, stirring in some sugar.

She takes a sip and a drag before talking, "So if a coffee with Irish whiskey in it is an Irish coffee, does vodka in coffee make it a Russian Coffee?" she shrugs at her own question and takes another drag, directing the smoke as best she can to the ceiling. "Name is Jennifer, and I'm here to study all the neat things aliens can do to bolster, or completely clusterfuck, our immune system. Are you three the three grumpy dwarves or something?

Grimey Drawer
Martin Dash

Dash took Callahan's proffered hand and shook it firmly, "Specialist Martin Dash, U.S. Army, retired."

Inside, on the other hand, he was nervous - the last few years of his life had ingrained a distrust and dislike of law enforcement agents, something he'd definitely need to get over to work effectively with this guy, and possibly the team.

Wandering over to the petite blonde perched on the overstuffed chair he put on a winning grin as he asked, "Do you mind if I uh..." motioning at the pack of cigarettes as they poked out from the purse at her side.

Plucking a cigarette from the crumpled packet she offered him, he leaned in close to the lighter in her hand as she sparked it, drawing in breath as the tip burst into flaring orange light. The stale smell of alcohol on her breath and clothes indicated she'd been drinking more than the current snifter in her coffee.

"Much obliged," he said, smoke jetting from his flared nostrils a moment later, and his shoulders relaxing as the nicotine hit.

The front door opens, and in steps a man in a suit and tie carrying a suitcase. Giving it to Marcus, he takes off his sunglasses, and says, "Gentlemen, ladies. Harrison, US Secret Service. Tami opts to simply ignore the blonde's comment and by extent, the rest of the chatter, and finishes her coffee. She glances down and glares at what, to her, is a glaringly obvious crease in her vest over her button down shirt. Further smoothing is in order as her matching black slacks have a similarly garish, unnecessary fold that she did not iron in that morning.

And since I didn't describe her gun earlier, it's the standard 9mm. :v:

As Martin asks for a smoke Jennifer smirks, "watch yourself, those things will kill ya!" She quickly takes another drag and swirls her Russian coffee around the mug. She then clears her throat before ashing her cigarette, "poo poo, so secret service, U.S. Marshal, former military, and whatever the hell you are Ms. Silent," she points with her smoldering cigarette at Tami. "So if the little grey men, or phallic face-raping monstrosoties, whichever fiction visionary was right, come round the rest of you can like kill them with rocket launchers or something right?"

She takes a final drag from her smoke and stubs it out in the mug. "Because if it comes down to death rays or rending talons, I'll be really good at a blood curdling scream, that's about it."

One eyebrow goes slightly up as the cigarette is waved at her, but otherwise Tami's expression does not change. "Why in the hell are you people smoking? Whatever we have to do is liable to be active and I'd rather not play babysitter to a group that starts wheezing halfway down a block." She leans forward in her chair, folding her hands on the table, coffee mug close to her right hand but seemingly discarded. "As for who I am, Miss Thing, I'm Agent Tami Lea Kayla with the NSA. Agent Kayla or just plain Kay suits me."

Satisfied with her introduction, she regards the rest of them coolly. Their move.

Stepping off a MAC flight and enjoying the amenities of first a C-130 and then a short hop in a jetranger to a heliport nearby. Jack found the black Mercedes that was waiting for him a welcome surprise. Tossing 2 green duffels into the trunk, he would be one of the last to show up. Walking up the stairs of the estate, a bit weirded out about this new black ops organization that tapped him working out of some mansion in Connecticut. gently caress it at least it wasn't Colombia. "Jack Gates, Sergeant First Class. Where can I down load my gear at?"

Though Jack did his best to pack everything nice and tight you might hear metal on metal clanging against each other as he sets both duffels down. "Is this the whole ops team?"

John Dyne
Jul 3, 2005

Well, fuck. Really?
With the last of the cell making it in, the six agents find themselves with a scant few minutes to make introductions before Marcus leans in through the doorway, trying to be discreet in his actions. He takes a headcount and nods, leaning back out to speak to Gunter before shutting the door and placing three fingers on the wall and pressing inwards; buttons hidden in the wall sink inwards with the pressure, and a loud hiss starts and stops after a few seconds.

Marcus adjusts his jacket and turns to the agents, smiling. "Welcome, agents. I am Marcus Kay, senior field liason for Aegis. You have all been hand selected from your respective fields and spheres of influence to monitor Black Book, alien, and paranormal activity within the greater tristate area." He tucks his hands behind his back, taking a sharp inhale. "I'll be giving you a more in-depth tour of the facilities in the near future, but for now, we are currently in the designated briefing and debriefing room. This room is protected by state of the art technology that makes it soundproof and bugproof, preventing all incoming and outgoing transmissions that are not set up and wired directly into the mainframe below our feet. However, it is only merely resistant to TEMPEST attacks, a security flaw that we are trying to fix but find resistance from the sole agency capable of such things, though you would need to ask Agent Kayla for more information about the National Security Agency's capabilities." He gestures to Tami as he speaks, smirking.

"All basic facilities, the sort that would not require any special explanation, are found on the first and second floors of this home. As we speak, Gunter and a few of the security staff will be moving your belongings to your dormitories on the second floor. A gymnasium, firing range, and pool can be found here on the first floor, as well as the four car garage. Kitchen, den, all the normal comforts will be here on the first and second floor; you'll also find an office here on the first floor and one on the second, which you can tailor to your needs.* There is a computer nook in the foyer as well. Now.."

The man gestures to the bookshelf, smiling. "Beyond that bookshelf lie stairs to the basement level, where most of your clandestine work will take place. Per Ms. Stetson's request, we have put together a biohazard suite, as well as a third office for her use. There are storage vaults for equipment and acquisition storage, as well as a radiation proofed vault secured against any external probing, and a subterranean garage holding a gift from the NSA; your very own 'Magic Van', capable of launching our own TEMPEST attacks. One eyebrow creeps back up slightly as Marcus turns that smirk in her direction. It stays there as the blonde poses her questions. Tami clears her throat and glances around at the other members of this team.

"Right. TEMPEST is the NSA codename referring to spying on information systems through leaking emanations, including unintentional radio and electronic signals, sounds, and vibrations. The actual methods are classified, but the DoD has some of the protection standards. But basically, if someone sends information to a printer, TEMPEST can pick up what it is through electromagnetic emanations; we can pick up keystrokes from the motion sensor in a smart phone to see what someone is typing. We can watch anything and everything from any computer not shielded to NSA standards. It's..." She paused and thought, looking for the proper word, and shrugged. "...complicated, but it is the best method of monitoring we have." Tami looks around again, checking to see if there's confusion or consternation or other such expressions.

Stubbing out his cigarette in the bottom of Jennifer's mug with a quick wink in her direction, he turned back to the thin figure standing beside the bookshelf looking across the group.

"I'm ready to have some knowledge dropped on me, Marcus."

Marcus listens to Nash's question and chuckles. "Movie references. Quaint. If you're going to go that route, then remember: if it bleeds, you can kill it." He motions to Tami. "Agent Kay here has actually killed one of the aliens designated as 'The Greys.' As it stands, however, you are unlikely to have direct contact with most of the aliens in their natural forms; if you reference the HERMES uplinks you've been given, you'll find a vast repository of information about our foes, terran and extraterrestrial, as far as we are capable of understanding them. But you'll find normal bullets tend to cause them harm. But it's unlikely you will face any alien life forms in person. Saurians are too fearful of capture, the Greys are typically pacifistic, and the Atlanteans are... unknowable, would be putting it gently."

"Your primary concern is the organization we have code named 'Black Book', who is currently engaged in an active technology exchange with the Saurian race; the Saurians have an amazing grasp of plasma and wave technology, as well as matter generation and conversion, and are hundreds of years ahead of us in any applicable sciences." He pauses to run a hand through his hair, his face serious. "We do have very limited access to some examples of alien technology, through capture and double dealing, but it's difficult to requisition from MOONDUST and Groom Lake. You're unlikely to run into it out in the field, but yes, it does exist." He nods to Dash. "Mr. Dash has actually been near enough such equipment to have seen it himself, but it's not very common in human hands."

The man adjusts his the sleeves of his jacket. "Like I said, your HERMES uplink will contain all general information that Aegis currently has. You will have information pushed to the device when there's new intel pertinent to your mission, and you will retain any briefings on it once they've been delivered." He tucks his hands back behind his back. "Anything else?"

"Engagement will typically be a case by case basis. Remember, you did not hear about Aegis until you were absolutely forced to know about Aegis; we are covert, completely under the radar, so all subtlety is requested when absolutely possible. We can cover up quite a bit, but only so long as you aren't making it obvious what's going on."

"As such, your primary goals will typically be that of gathering information we can ultimately use; the capture of alien and Black Book technology, paranormal and alien corpses and paraphernalia, basically anything that will give us more of an edge and better understand where our threats currently stand and how best to counter and prepare for them. We also need to protect our own assets, including those who have yet to learn they ARE assets." Marcus grins at this. "There have been several scientists who were unaware of the overall existence of Aegis or Black Book that have stumbled upon great advances in technology that suddenly became very valuable in our little 'shadow war.'"

"Now, if there are no further questions, we can begin on your briefing.."

Well, fuck. Really?
Without further questions, Marcus grins. "Alright then." He pulls a remote from his pocket and presses a button, dimming the lights as a projector, previously hidden in the ceiling, fills the empty wall with the Aegis logo. "As you may be aware, depending on how much you have actually dipped into your HERMES uplink, after the attack on the World Trade Center in September of 2001, New York has been horribly scarred on a paranormal level. Ground Zero still remains a powerful locus point for rituals, psychic and beyond, and the massive amounts of psychic seepage has made an unfriendly city even less friendly."

Marcus presses a button, bringing up an incredibly disturbing slide of a human body that has been eviscerated and mangled almost beyond recognition, with a vast section of muscle and flesh ripped clean from the bone on the sternum; the rib cage has been broken at the spine and spread outward, while the other extremities seem to be missing. "One of our contacts, a forensics expert within the NYPD Homicide unit, was a first responder to this scene last night at 2200 hours. The victim has yet to be identified, but as you can see, they were killed in a very, very brutal fashion."

He gives a moment for this all to sink in, judging everyone's expressions before pressing the button again. The close up is replaced with a wide shot of the carnage, showing the alley way the body was found in has been completely trashed and splattered with blood. "This was the scene first response found when a young woman called in after hearing what sounded like a short fight. Initial investigation of the scene found the victim is missing their heart, so with that in mind, and the utter brutality of the scene, and the general background of the city, our best guess at the moment is a paranormal killer. At the moment, we're uncertain of the exact nature, or if we're dealing with a legit Infused or a Forsaken, or if it's even a copycat perpetuated by the two most likely alien factions."

There is no pause as he moves to the next slide. A blurry image of a woman comes up on screen, peering down the alleyway; she has short, brunette hair but due to the quality of the photo and the distance it's hard to tell much else. "This is Janine Taylor, the citizen that made the first call regarding the attack, and the first witness on scene. If this is truly a paranormal threat, then it's likely Ms. Taylor is in danger, and if we know who she is, then it's likely Black Book does as well." Marcus presses another button, turning the projector off.

"As of now, we have found no other evidence of any other such attacks; there has been nothing similar to it in the past and it seems our killer has yet to strike again, if they even plan to." He tucks the remote back into his jacket, looking over the group. "So right now, our only leads are the crime scene, the body, and the woman herself. We're unsure if Black Book is involved, but we are certain that if they are, they have much of the same information we do. Your HERMES links will be updated shortly with her address, which is adjacent to the crime scene, and the address of the morgue where the victim's body has been taken. We are still waiting for forensics to give us an identity of the vic, but we're uncertain if that information will be of any use, though we'll let you know when we find out."

With a sigh, Marcus straightens up once again. "I turn the floor over to you, agents. If you have any questions, let me hear them; I can clear up whatever possible on the limited intel we have. Otherwise, I'd recommend this be the time you select an acting leader, and make a decision on a course of action. We have researchers looking into how auspicious it was to make such an attack last night, but we don't know how long the research will take. We are also working concurrently with the NYPD on this investigation, and will be receiving their leads from our sources."

And there's your first briefing. You guys need to pick someone as a de facto leader, mostly someone who will act as a tie breaker. I'll be giving them little updates for them to divvy out to you guys as their HERMES uplink receives new intel, but beyond that, they're a regular agent and there will be no risk of insubordination or punishment for it.

You've got two basic locations to scope out, and it's up to you guys to decide the best courses of action and what to use in this situation. Now's the time for pulling strings and plotting!

As Marcus continues speaking, he pulls out his HERMES and begins a search for the terms "Infused" and "Forsaken" in the AEGIS lexicon - there appeared to already be much, much more he was going to have to learn than he expected.

The briefing winding down and the lights returning to normal, Martin turns to the group to discuss tactics.

"I'm no lawman myself, so maybe you can enlighten us Marshall. In your line of work, is it viable to pick up the target for interviewing? We may be in it for a race to beat Black Book to the prize on this one which is my speciality. I'm thinking Ms. Stetson and some others to lend some gra-vi-tas might want to do an analysis of the crime scene beyond the abilities of the local PD perhaps," he postured to them. "I can make some calls and get a hold of a non-descript car to effect an extraction...?"

UNDERSTANDING CORRUPTION AND ITS EFFECTS
- by Doctor Bruce Harken, CAPS Field Researcher and Paranormal Specialist

CORRUPTION
Corruption is a permanent mental change induced by the
Seepage. It is a phenomenon that works directly on man and
occurs in degrees over an extended period. This phenomenon
is extremely powerful and can be the high price paid for a poorly
executed ritual or induced by a ritual curse.
Those strong of will may resist the insidious effects for
years, but the untiring onslaught will be their doom. The corrupted
are in constant danger. They are living with the dark
knowledge that they are becoming something else, drowning in
forces as old as thought.

The corruption always results in the loss of identity. A corrupted
individual is no longer human, but merely a wandering
echo of flesh for the Seepage. Once they are fully corrupt and
have “snapped” there is no salvation, they are horrors wearing
a man's skin.

Within mundanes, corruption's true goal is to open their
minds to the supernatural, attempting to turn them into Foci. It
is those strongest in self who are most likely to become Foci
(more accurately, one of the Infused). All those who become
corrupted are slowly melted down and then poured into one of
the primal fears of man: the fear of being hunted, the fear of the
unknown, and the fear of death.

The process of corruption will last only until the victim submits.
The longer the corruption takes to work, the greater the
amount of time the Seepage has to increase its channel with the
victim. If the corruption is successful too quickly, the Seepage
never establishes the pathway needed for it to keep connected.
The result of a quick corruption is an individual who has the
mentality of one of the Infused, but none of their supernatural
power. They are known as the Forsaken, those whom the
Seepage tried to win over, but failed.

With Psychic and Supernatural Foci, the corruption is far more dangerous.
Their tie to the supernatural makes them especially vulnerable.
The increased paranormal energies surrounding a Focus increases the power
of corruption, making it harder to resist. When they finally swallow enough
of the dark waters of the Seepage and drown, the result is always the same: an Infused.

THE CORRUPTED (AKA INFUSED)
Once the unfortunate victim becomes corrupted, he will find
the Seepage has built a channel into his soul and is pooling its
energies. Although there are steps one can take to resist, once corruption
is completed all one can do is drown -- drown in the river
of mankind's fear and unharnessed power, in the evil taint of the
Seepage. Once this occurs, an Infused is born. Avatars of the
Seepage, nightmares brought to life, Infused are limited in power
only by what their physical bodies can take. They are the monsters
that walk the night. Like Foci, the Infused have the ability to provoke
manifestations. These manifestations they control completely,
with a power and permanence far beyond the capabilities of a
Focus. Infused boil with supernatural energy, but they emit no
aura due to their total control of their power. The Infused are
Seepage embodied; they cannot drown, for they are the water.

The mind of the former human is dead, or worse than dead.
They have total mastery over a few manifestations such as
Telepathic Illusion and Telekinesis and are not plagued by the
chaotic whim of the Seepage as Foci are. The Infused also possess
other abilities that Foci cannot even aspire to. One of their
only limitations is in the number of manifestations they can provoke;
they no longer possess the wide range of a Focus' chaotic
powers. However, compared to the control they wield over
the abilities they possess, this limitation is hardly significant.

Many whom corruption transforms into Infused and the
Forsaken become predatory monsters, crazed magicians,
obsessed serial killers, and fiery-eyed cult leaders. However,
these dark paths are not the only possible result of corruption.
At its heart, corruption is not about becoming evil, it is about
ceasing to be human. When the Seepage enters into the deepest
reaches of a person's being, it slowly removes all facets of
personality that fall outside the pattern desired by the
Seepage. This pattern differs from individual to individual, and
depends both on the method of their corruption and the
specifics of their personality.

Someone who is full of anger and hatred may become a
werewolf, if Infused, or a cannibalistic serial killer, if Forsaken.
However, a scholarly magician who is corrupted by a failed ritual
might instead become an Adept. This corrupted being’s fascination
with magic will slowly drive away friends and associates,
leaving the scholar alone in an isolated cabin with only
books and obsession.

By all normal standards, most of the Infused and all of the
Forsaken are totally insane and entirely incapable of functioning
normally in society. They need not be dangerous, however,
unless they or their way of life is threatened. The isolated magician
described above might never create or perform a ritual to
harm anyone. However, if someone stole one of his papers, or
perhaps even refused to sell him a book, the dark side of his
insanity might make itself known.

Prophets are the most ambiguous of all of the varieties of the
Infused. Many become leaders of dark and twisted cults, but
certainly not all. Some become saint-like in their selflessness
and caring, while others are merely lost in their own private
communion with the forces beyond. The latter become hermits
who leave their trance-like dreams only when someone comes
seeking their aid and assistance.

MUTATION
Mutation is a permanent physical change induced by
Seepage. This is believed to happen only to the Infused,
although Aegis is still investigating this. Mutations occur slowly,
but irreversibly. The Infused's own power slowly twists its
body, the beast inside leaves its mark on the flesh. The
processes of mutation seem to employ an inhuman form of
regeneration. Instead of healing, it alters the body. Wolfen
aspects may surface, but still a man cannot become wolf.
Normally, the mutation bends humans into Predators. Claws,
fangs, additional mass, and fur, actually thick body-wide hair,
have all been duly noted as common attributes. Rumors of
sudden or periodic transformations are unjustified, it has been
determined that werewolves and other lycanthropes exist, but
do not physically transform as fantasized in legend. They are
Infused Predators projecting the Telepathic Illusion of wolfen
transformation. Although wolfen or bestial mutations are the
most common, they are by no means the full extent of paranormal
mutations encountered.

BANES
Banes are those objects, conditions or actions that are antithetical
to the corrupted. For example, a vampiric Predator
would have a violent reaction to sunlight, religious items, wooden
stakes, etc. Some Banes instill fear in the creature, or
enrage. Using a Bane is the best way to ensure the complete
and utter destruction of the creature, and ensuring that the
Infused does not return as a Demon. Some Banes are discussed
in the categories below, but many Banes are specific to
the individual archetypes, covered in the following enteries.

ARCHETYPES OF INFUSED
Being corrupted is at its essence leaving humanity behind
and becoming a living archetype. Even if the archetype is one
of love and caring, humanity is lost in the process. The essence
of being an archetype is being concerned only with matter
relating to that particular nature and function. Friends, hobbies,
life goals and even personality quirks not directly relevant are
slowly lost as the corrupted being divests itself of the remaining
tatters of its humanity.

Archetypes are single, easily-defined, culturally universal
concepts. Archetypes form the basis of most myths and legends.
The wise magician, the holy hermit, the young hero with
great potential, the wicked stepmother, the wildman or wildwoman,
death personified, the berserk warrior, the sacred fool,
and the evil tempter are all archetypes found in stories told
throughout the world. In the West, a variety of archetypal
images can be found in Tarot cards, Arthurian myths, and the
legends of all the Indo-European religions.

No one knows if our existing archetypes are in some way
based upon legends of the Infused and the Forsaken.
Alternatively, the Seepage may create archetypal monsters as
a response to the deep structures of the human mind. In
either case, every corrupted being is some reflection of these
archetypes.

It is important to remember that there are no “species” or
“breeds” of monsters. The similarities are based upon the laws
of magic and human psychology, not those of biology. Some of
those who are attacked by a Predator and survive slowly
become Predators. However, they need not become the same
type of Predator as their attacker. The specific archetype "chosen"
by any individual corrupted being depends on a combination
of circumstance and quirks of their personal psychology.

As a general rule, no corrupted being adopts an archetype
that is wholly alien to their former human psychological makeup.
Some might take comfort in this fact. Remember, however,
that within all of us lies the potential to become a number of
archetypal beings -- some fearsome and deadly and all strange
and inhuman. When attacked by a Predator, an angry person of
dubious morals might become a cannibalistic monster who kills
and consumes random people. On the other hand, a person of
great faith and strong moral convictions might become a terrifying
avenger who hunts down and kills anyone who transgresses
their now rigid moral code. We all carry the seeds of
inhumanity within us.
The article continues on, prefaced that all further information is conjecture and may not hold itself useful during an actual investigation; the good doctor notes that while much of the results of paranormal infusion are archetypal and settled deeply in the mythos known by the majority of humanity, there are rare instances where one who is truly insane can be taken by corruption and turn into something unique and spectacularly devastating. Skimming further, it seems to delve into the psychology behind the loss, and other things that really don't matter in relation to the case.

Dash makes a note of it on his HERMES link; it seems like an interesting read, but his questions at the moment have been answered. He instead checks out the briefing information that is now found on the forefront of his uplink, and taps the address attributed to the witness. Within moments, he has a map before him with markers designating the police station and the crime scene. A casual scroll shows the estate is approximately an hour and a half away, not accounting for traffic; the station and the crime scene appear to be about ten blocks separated.

Jack will step out of the briefing and go to a secure area of the mansion to make the call. He will use the HERMES system to flag all the smaller airline carriers that tend to be used for MAC and otherwise clandestine flights, the ones that he usually has frequent flyer miles on, to see about arranging transportation for a 6 man team. He uses some of the old codes he was told to give when arranging flights for the other teams he's been on. Teams that, now that he's with Aegis, Jack realizes were Black Book operations. Jackie Jack figures that any risk is acceptable considering the civvies wouldn't report back to Black Book that "someone" from their office called to arrange a flight. Thats what the phonecall was for in the first place.

Well, fuck. Really?
"You'll understand, Marshall Nash, that you are asking if there have been murders in New York City." Marcus gives Nash a wry smile, but shakes his head. "But no. We've noticed nothing of a similar nature; the only ones even within the past month have been related to standard crime; a mugging, a gang tiff, the usual. Nothing of this nature or of anyone that could be seemed overly important or linked to our usual concerns." He then turns to Stetson. "Our forensics contact IS available for you to pick at his brain, but he does not know who you are and we would prefer to keep it that way, in case he is compromised. We can relay questions to him or otherwise give you any data he has, but I'm not sure what you'd like beyond that."

Both Sergeant Gates and Mr. Dash get up to excuse themselves, needing to make a few phone calls of their own. Marcus lets them out, the room buzzing faintly as the security measures are deactivated. The thin man smiles, excusing himself as well as he lets the others talk amongst themselves while two of their teammates follow their own leads.

Heading into the kitchen, Jackie makes a call to one of the front companies he's used in the past to set up clandestine trips for the Rangers, suspecting they've worked with Black Book before. When he speaks with the lady on the other end about booking a flight, he finds the process to be absolutely seamless. The woman on the other end seems almost flirtatious by the end, and gives the sergeant her extension if he should ever need her services again. However, in spite of this, he was unable to find out if Black Book had been using the same service. It's possible that, even if a flight WERE booked, it'd be on a need to know basis. Simply calling and booking another one wouldn't reveal anything.

Meanwhile, Dash digs up an old buddy of his who owes him a favor. The two chat for a few minutes, catching up on old times, before Dash reveals he's calling to pull in what's due. The man goes quiet for a moment and sighs. "Alright, bud. I'll see what I can do. I don't got much on my own, but I got favors of my own I can call in. Guessin' you don't have the cash up front, huh?" When he gets the negative from Dash, the guy laughs. "Yeah, didn't think so. Okay, I'll see if I got anything liquid I can put towards this, or see if I can get someone to front it. I know, I owe ya big, so we'll call it even after this, alright?" He asks what sort of vehicle Dash needs, and after a minute tells him to give him a bit of time and he'll see what he can do.

Gates fails his test to get information, but aces his test for mobility; going forward, he will gain +2 to his Mobility rolls if he deals with this lady. (8 on Investigation, 13 on Bureaucracy)

Dash passes his Criminal Resources test, gaining approximately 2 RP to spend towards a vehicle. This is after it has been doubled by his Criminal Resources string. (10 on Criminal Resources)
