He isn't particularly surprised when the kobolds begin to flee: without a strong leader or overwhelming numbers, they were a predictably cowardly race. With Ander conscious once again, and Hager scaling the side of the church, he finds himself thoroughly in agreement with Janelle's recommendation of rallying atop the roof. He waits for the others to finish ascending the wall, with his blade still brandished to cover their defense just in case something rears its head. Once they are safely atop the roof, he sheathes his longsword, gives a nod to the all-powerful druid in the sky, and makes a quick grab for the scimitar of the fallen Jimitar, lord of blades. Catching its hilt between the notch of his belt and his armor, he follows his comrades, ascending the stonework with practiced ease.

Once atop the wall, he offers the scimitar to the druid as requested.

It isn't long before the roving patrol finds your little mess. With Jimitar and the others slain, the new lead cultist issues a few new orders.

"It seems a few hunters are about. Dead men at both doors. That's it! Everyone stick together and move back to the base camp. We'll report this to Frulam, let her handle this. The temple can wait."

The mob begins to head north, leaving you all on the roof.

Even better, they left of their own accord. Nel climbs silently down the wall, mask pulled up over her nose and mouth to help with the smoke, then she gets to work on the door by the light of her magical flame. Once the lock clicks open she does the secret knock on the door in case someone inside knows it, then opens it, whispering urgently inside, "Psst, I'm Nel, a traveler, Nighthill sent me to rescue you all and bring you to the keep. Gather whatever you can and follow me before the enemy comes back with reinforcements!"

Hager plops himself not far from Jared, tired from the conflict. When the cultists retreat into the distance and leave the group to themselves, he smiles. "Hah! Not quite how I saw this going, but I'm not one to complain with results."

The wounded Barbarian moves to the southern end of the roof, looking down into the smoke but not seeing much. With the coast (apparently) clear, he climbs down into the smoke and finds the man he knocked out still there. He can't help but be pleased with himself.

"Looks like we get to keep our present after all." Hoisting the body over his shoulder, he lets the others handle getting those in the temple out while staying near his brother.

He follows Janelle and Hager down the wall near the backdoor of the church, suggesting to Hager and Ander, "The two of you might want to finish off those berries before we set off back to the keep. There's no guarantee it will be a safe trip." He then peers through the now-open door and into the building, looking about to see if anybody is injured and in need of assistance on the walk back. He is also looking for the cleric or equivalent in charge of the temple, curious if they happen to have a few spells of healing at the ready.

Opening the door, Nell is faced with dozen of townsfolk huddled among the pews of the temple. They seem terrified. If the kobolds had got to them first...

A half-elven priest approaches, his face lit up with gratitude.

"We heard the ramming stop and assumed the worst. But it seems we have you to thank for our lives, strangers. Please, is there somewhere you can take us? This temple won't hold for much longer."

The cleric apologizes and says he is unable to call upon the divine again this night. Many of the townsfolk were injured in the initial attacks.

The trip back is stressful for the townsfolk but largely uneventful. Fires continue to burn throughout the town, and you hear the occasional shout or clash, but not nearly as active as before. After passing through the old tunnel you are once again inside the keep.

"Good job on getting everyone out of that temple alive. As for the prisoner, our folks will handle him from here."

The castellan looks at your wounds with concern.

"You all made it back, but you look like hell. I'm still waiting on reports from the mill expedition, so why don't you all take a breather here? Sure looks like you could use it."

Sounds of battle grow more distant as the next hour passes by. There is no more sign of the dragon either. You finally have a few moments to patch your wounds and collect your thoughts.

Time for a short rest. By biting off so much at the temple and surviving, you also got a ton of xp. Everyone is now level 2. Level up your characters along with spending Hit Dice, eating berries or whatever.

-New HP adds to your current and max. So if you are at 6/10 and gain 10HP, you are now at 16/20. Hit Dice work the same way.

Hager's already well used hide armor is beginning to look like rags. Many of the soldiers seem to be enjoying better armors, and it gets him to thinkin'.

Finding the castellan during the groups break, he inquires about obtaining some armor of his own. "The kind of pay an ol' logger like me doesn't give much option for equipment. Back at the temple...
He comments, "The keep remains secure, we can escort you there." Looking to his injured allies, he suggests, "We will need a moment or two to bandage our wounds, but otherwise yes, gather your things and let's aim to head out within the next minute or two." Peering inside the temple, he inquires, "Do you mind if I take a quick look around for anything that might be useful to us?" Once he receives the blessing of the cleric to do so, he helps himself to a simple empty vellum book, some ink, and some writing supplies, finding nothing much else of strategic value within the building.

On the way back to the tunnel he remains on watchful guard, obviously a bit worried for the safety of Ander and Hager, neither of whom are in the best of shape at the moment.

At the keep...
Having finally found a moment of peace and quiet, Zedekiah sets his mind to two very important tasks. First, he finds an empty room in the keep, lights a few candles liberated from wherever they happened to be lying around while he was searching for a quiet place to rest, and pulls out the vellum book he had taken from the temple. Thereafter, he sets his backpack on the floor, removes his armored gauntlets, and rifles through it - retrieving the book he had been reading before this disaster of an evening had began. He was nearly done a significant chapter, and had been looking forward to its conclusion for quite a while now.

Before returning to where he had left off, however, he thumbs along the spine of the book, just beneath the silver lettering naming the author. Within the creases was a wax seal bearing the emblem of the Zhentarim, exactly where the chapter he had been reading earlier in the day said it would be. After removing the wax ball from its hidden cache, he hovers his hand over the vellum book and pierces it with his thumb and forefinger, causing a few drops of a crimson red liquid to fall to the empty pages below. Ignoring the fact that the liquid begins to dimly glow from the moment it hits the page, he then maneuvers the wax ball towards his face, tilting his head back and squeezing the last few drops of the liquid into his eyes like medicinal drops - again, exactly as the book had instructed.

He could feel the effects of the concentrate working immediately, opening pathways in his mind that had been dormant, and strengthening those that had already been in use. Albeit decades old, the blood of the author was a powerful elixir indeed. His vision blurred for a few minutes as a result of the blood swirling around his cornea, but in time he was able to see well enough to pick up the copy of 'Fighting Man' and finish the chapter he had been working his way through.

By the time he had finished the forty or so pages remaining in the chapter, he spared a glance towards the empty vellum book that he had doused in blood, and was only a little surprised to find that the liquid had rearranged itself into a series of eloquently written diagrams and expert calligraphy denoting phrases, actions, and frames of mind necessary to call upon the basics of arcane power. Thumbing through the now-verbose segment of that book, he dipped his newly acquired pen into the accompanying bottle of ink and traced over the lines of blood. One purpose of doing so was to hide the blood used as ink, of course, but the other entirely valid reason for doing so was to help commit each word and stroke to memory. Speaking to himself, he commented, "Well, isn't that interesting."

Standing up, he closed the vellum spellbook, returned both books to his backpack, and attached his gauntlets back to his forearms. Flexing his arms, he made a fist: and was all too pleased to see it glow with the pale blue chill of the grave.

He opens his eyes, which seem to be glowing with more purple than usual, and finds a quieter place to rest. The dragon's magic bubbles inside him, rising further to the surface as he tries to come to grips with all the voices and the rising power.

Eventually he rises again and goes in search of his brother, about an hour after he hid himself away.

Upon returning to the keep he finds a quiet place to pray to Lathander, to pray for forgiveness. Perhaps more surprisingly he was answered, gaining insight into the divine connection to his god and the ability to bring it to bear, for weal and for woe.

The druid lights some dried herbs and prays to the ancients whose power that allowed her to save Ander, expecting she might have to explain herself. But the First Animals of the Earth--represented by Wolf, Bear, and Spider--were pleased that she was able to balance culling enemies without failing to guard those she had promised to protect, just as they had protected and raised the First Humans, weakest of the beasts, until they grew strong enough to fend for themselves. They caution her from underestimating the men in the party as they had done with their wards, her distant ancestors, who grew spoiled enough to betray them. If she could prove that she could keep those who she saved from abusing the gift of life, then perhaps the First Animals of Water would be the next ones to lend her their strength.

If she could not, there was always more culling to get their attention, they say. She laughs at the joke made at her murderous partymembers' expense, apparently to herself, then bids them watch over the elf who'd pierced her ear and taught her to pick locks. The ceremony ends with Nel serene and smiling under her scarf, and since she had no wounds to bandage, she spend the rest of her time reporting to Nighthill and the castellan to see what their people had gleaned from the captive cultist, or if he had any new missions in mind for her.

Your children need a father now, more than ever." Looking to the governor, he suggests, "If your governor is guilty of any wrongdoing, it will be settled in a court of law. And I will personally look for evidence to support your suspicion, if that is what it will take to lower your blade."

Admittedly, he was a little amused at the man's brazen assault, and so he tosses him a bone, suggesting, "And for the moment, if you wish to channel your aggression into something productive, a captive member of the attackers was brought back from the temple. I imagine the governor's men are interrogating him as we speak, and perhaps he would be kind enough to let you ...participate?" He gave the governor a look, obviously giving him an opportunity to risk the life of an enemy instead of his own.

The evidence was circumstantial, but Nighthill could have raised taxes to buy immunity and some bodyguards as insurance, in case the cultists decided to try to steal from his keep anyway. Or perhaps the mercenary detail was part of the deal, and the guards were hired to unwittingly train Lennithon's army of cultists at the start of their campaign? That was how her nomadic people trained the young, in war games with lowered stakes. The objectives were never to wipe out the enemy, only to steal horses, capture some prisoners for ransom, and count coup by sneaking up on the enemy and smacking them with a hand or a stick.

Nel herself had been kidnapped once as a youth, only to learn by feigning sleep that her family offered nothing to her ransomers. The rival tribe's elders decided to make the most of an unwanted prisoner by allowing her to attempt escape as an exercise for their young trackers.

They got more than they bargained for. Not only did she elude them, she counted coup on them all that night with the same club she used today. That triumph outweighed the cold reception she got when she returned home, in fact. Like a stray cat that kept showing up, unwanted.

Perhaps it was time for her to show up where Nighthill kept the tax records, to see if any money had gone missing recently.

Up on the wall, you see a line of dozens of foes facing the castle. They stand a few dozen yards from the main gate of the keep. From the darkness, a massive creature strides into the light of the dying fires around the keep. It is shaped roughly like a human, but stands at least seven feet tall, has skin covered in blue scales, and its fingers bear wicked claws. It has the face and reptilian eyes of a dragon.

The creature scans the walls. A line of kobolds and cultists fan out behind it. With daggers and spears, they prod forward a number of captives. You can make out a woman, a teenage boy in a blood-soaked tunic, and two children. With then are two guards - two of the dozen sent to retake the mill, as the castellan quickly points out.

The monster hails the keep in a deep, booming voice.

"Defenders of Greenest! This has been a successful night. I am feeling...generous. You see these useless, pitiful prisoners. We have no need for them, so I will trade them back. Send out your best warrior to fight me, and you can have them in exchange!"

One of the defenders says, "They have my sister! Those are her kids down there. Let me at them! I'll kill him--"

The dwarf holds him back from charging downstairs, throwing open the gate and launching himself at the beasts below.

"Not so fast. You would be tossing your life away. Others have a far better chance to defeat that horror. Is anyone else is up to the task?"

He shrugs, responding, "Better qualified or not, you're half-dead on your feet. What am I supposed to do with my guilt if an injured man dies in battle against a foe I could have faced?" He wasn't particularly committed to the battle one way or another, but he was curious why the man was so focused on rushing back into battle.

Reveling in his new Scalemail puts Hager in one hell of a positive mood. He barely seem effected by the strange creature bellowing his word in the distance. Pounding his fist into his other hand, a smile takes his face; "That's one ugly Orc. It'll be even uglier once we're done with it!"

Jared and Hager hear the voice once again.

"No orc. Cyanwrath was born of dragon and mortal. Half-dragon, he shares the breath of the blues."

Ander smiles and pulls the remainder of Nel's goodberries out of his pocket, downing them in one large bite.

"I was holding onto them in case someone else needed them, but if I can save some innocents this is a more worthy goal. What was it you said Zedikah? Let a fool die a fools death? Well I'm feeling foolish and I've got a sword thirsting for dragon's blood."

Slipping down the chimney, Nell finds herself in a living area. She isn't the first thing here. There's a robed woman carrying a quarterstaff with the end glowing with magical light. Along with her is a kobold. But this doesn't look anything like the others - this one has a small pair of wings sprouting from his back. They twitch as the two converse.

"It's picked clean, all right. Just check on the papers. Frulam's orders."

"You don't give the orders here. Look about for his study."

Zedekiah laughs, obviously a little happier that Ander can face his opponent in battle at his best, at least. He does add, though, "That handles my main concern about your safety. To be honest, though, if you kill him with your greatsword you're going to ruin him. I'd like to skin him and turn him into a suit of armor, if at all possible."

...he seems completely serious.

Nel waits for them to separate then ceiling drop ambushes whichever one she can. Then she'd stalk the other.

"We thank you for your bravery, sir. Open the gates! Let him out to face the enemy."

Within minutes the gates are opened. Brave Ander is allowed outside with any who will follow. The rest remain within, watching from the castle walls.

"A champion? Yes, Yes! Come forward. These are my terms. The children will be set loose now as a sign of my goodwill. The others...after the duel. Win or lose. And a duel it shall be. If any interfere, the prisoners will die."

"A half-dragon with bad breath can't make for too good an armor there, Zedekiah. Then again, it's skull might make for a half-way decent codpiece. Course, it'd need to be a little bigger!"

Hager is clearly not above laughing at his own joke.
