What is the FIBA World Cup?

Formerly known as the World Championships, this has been renamed in an attempt to fool Europeans who might think the soccer tournament is still going. This tournament determines the world champions in basketball at least until the Olympics which determines the world champions of basketball.

The championships are in basketball hotbed Spain starting tomorrow, and is the welcome return of actual basketball for NBA fans instead of speculating about LeBron and whether the guy on the golf cart knows anything about LeBron.

Is there a dumb theme song and embarrassing video?

Who is playing in the FIBA World Cup?

Brief team capsules

The Favorites

The USA is the presumptive favorite in any international tournament that does not involve Larry Brown. This will be the most vulnerable team since 2008, though. Paul George will not playing because his shin bone is still embedded in the court in Las Vegas. Kevin Love quit because he was involved in the Cleveland trade. Kevin Durant left because he hates America. Still, the team has been built on the most important American principles: dunking on foreigners. It includes Kenneth Faried who has been dunkin' since a youngin, and Anthony Davis. But we're also taking a Plumlee, so gently caress us.

Notable NBA Players:

All of them

Notable absentees:

LeBron James
Carmelo Anthony
Kobe Bryant
Known America-Hater Kevin Durant
Paul George's entire leg
Derrick Rose's Knees

The Next Favorite

Spain returns the Spanish Armada of Large Skilled People as the biggest threat to American basketball hegemony. As hosts, most people expect another Spain-USA classic in the finals.

Notable NBA players:

Pau Gasol
Marc Gasol
Ricky
Serge Ibaka

Notable Foreign Players

Rudy Fernandez
Sergio Llull

Other Major Teams of Note

France won the 2013 Eurobasket competition. But they will be missing Tony Parker.

Notable NBA players

Ian Mahinimi
Beethoven in the Age of Romantics
Niolas Batum

Notable Absences

Tony Parker
Joakim Noah
Ronny Turiaf, for Some Reason

Prediction

Lithuania is a reliable basketball powerhouse who hosted the last tourney in 2010.

Notable NBA players

Jonas Valanciunas
Donatas Montiejunas

Australia will suck because Patty Mills is hurt

Notable NBA Players

Donte Exum
Aron Baynes

Notable Giant Australians Who Are Still Playing For The Team and I am Mildly Obsessed With
Nathan Jawai

Argentina returns their veteran team

Notable NBA Players

Luis Scola
Pablo Prigioni

Notable Former Chicago Bulls That I Like A Lot

Andres Nocioni

Are The Spurs Allowing Manu to Play?

No

Slovenia has numerous Dragics

I don't know much about Angola, but they're in trouble.

Other NBA Players of Note

Leandro Barbosa, Anderson Varajao, Nene (Brazil)
The Greek Freak (Greece)
Omer Asik (Turkey)

Is Andray Blatche Playing for the Phillippines?

Yes

Does this tournament have Drew Gooden?

No

Please channel your inner Fran Fraschilla and use this as your FIBA N/V and GDT.

After reading Pacific Rims and having a very good friend in HS that occasionally busted out PBA tops for "Wear A Jersey Day", I agree with this sentiment.

(Sadly, your lot are in arguably the Group of Death, but hope is hope and all that.)

Senegal is the best chance the Philippines has of picking up one win, then the other one will just have to come down to hot shooting from outside and Blatche getting his head together for one game.

:negative:

VV I think Puerto Rico is actually better than Senegal, which is why I consider them a 'maybe - if the stars align right' opponent.

They still have Batum, Fournier and Diaw.

Also all they need to do to reach the next round is play better than Iran and Egypt.

He made the first one then promptly clanked the next nine. Now he remembered that he could theoretically drive too so his last three possessions were him awkwardly lumbering towards the basket.

I really like the rest of the team though, they look like one of those plucky FIBA teams where nobody's taller than 6'6" that can bomb itself back into any game if they get hot.

Which they just did, after Blatche went to the bench for the first time. :)
