The final conversation between Robin and the Doctor was far more appealing to me than I expected it to be. But I don't have many strong feelings yet. Maybe on a rewatch.

Ben Miller as Christopher Guest in the Princess Bride was wonderfully hammy. Supremely silly, but also very entertaining.

The Sherriff was decapitated in the duel, revealing he was actually a robot. He then pops his head back onto his body and continues the fight.

Jeez, that's a huge plotpoint to completely lose in the edit. It also makes Robin's brutal goddamn murder of him seem... well, more in-line with usual Doctor Who morality.

Ahh, that makes sense given the blink and you'll miss it "I'm a half-man/half-android!" stuff he shouted in the middle of their fight out of nowhere.

Edit: I loved the design of the robots too, they looked great.

ASK ME ABOUT POWER RANGERS MYSTIC FORCE
This was definetly a much needed, cozier episode, especially compared to the huge bombast of Into the Dalek and Deep Breath. It felt very refreshing in that aense, seeing how Twelve is in a slightluy slower pace.

You don't have to 8e a good person to 8e a hero.

Jerusalem posted:

I don't know what was edited from the original cut, but I thought the climax (from the peasant revolt against the robot knights to the duel between Robin and the Sheriff) felt a little haphazardly edited - I don't know if they cut stuff out or if what they filmed was a mess and that was the best they could salvage from it.

Edit: Based on this and The Crimson Horror, Gatiss might have finally found his strength in Who - silly stories where everybody just has a great time.

It was a scene where Robin cuts the Sherriff's head off, revealing him to be a Mechanical. Robin almost immediately throws the head back on because it's a bit too freaky.

That was everything The Curse of the Black Spot and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship tried to be and failed miserably at. And it looks like we're making a play for something more than just "entertaining cobblers" next week, too.

I do wonder how long Gatiss has wanted to do that story. A lot of that preening and action stuff seemed like it'd have played right into the hands of David Tennant, but I'll bet someone said to him "not while Robin Hood's still being made, mate".

Also, I believe that this is the first time there's been a Doctor Who guest actor who's also been employed by a pornographic TV channel! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhtWNUKtIsQ

(I do also enjoy the concept of Paul "Endurance UK" Ross having a pop at bad cable TV shows...)

I didn't have high expectations of the episode but actually ended up enjoying it a lot more than I expected to. Even the stupid spoon fight. It was fun. Would watch it again.

For whatever reason, it kinda sorta reminded me of Rik Mayall as Flashheart Hood from Blackadder Back and Forth, but I'm probably alone in that.

I'm actually really glad this episode is getting such a positive reaction; I thought I was alone in enjoying to workprint version. It's definitely up there now along with The Crimson Horror as Gatiss's best.

Twelve and Robin locked in the dungeon was the highlight of the entire thing for me.

The only criticisms I would have of that episode, and they're very small ones, is that I think they could have made the opening 20 minutes 15 without losing anything of value, and not have to make as many cuts later on. The golden arrow solution was also very bizarre.

Yeah the golden arrow solution basically made no sense at all (well really none of the episode did, but that in particular), outside of the fact that it required the Doctor, Robin and Clara to stop fussing and feuding over who the cleverest was and actually work together as a team.

I loved the Doctor's grudging admission that he completely cheated the archery competition too.

I love it, the only issue I really have with it is that the first half sets itself up so well as atmospheric horror before the second half happily embraces going silly... but the second half is just so much fun and everybody seems to be having such a good time that it is infectious. I always end that episode with a big smile on my face, probably helped by Diana Rigg hamming it up so well.

Clearly Ramon Salamander had a successful film career before he entered politics.

EDIT: though on a more fan-wanky note, that does tie into the question of "where do the faces come from"...

If we never get any more of an "answer" to that question beyond the Doctor's musing about his subconscious trying to tell him something I'll be absolutely satisfied. It's a question that doesn't really need to be asked or answered.

Sometimes, in a city this dirty, you need a real hero.
The whole "real becomes legend" thing annoyed me because it felt like some tacked on happy ending flying in the face of everything else which was revealed to be fake.

Also, maybe it's just me but it really seems like they're using Capaldi to break apart/deride many of the more lovely/campy elements of the previous seasons.

Like, Smith/Tenant would have just run with it and gone all fanservicey for the whole episode only to go "aha, i knew you were all fake" at the end. Whereas Capaldi was shouting it all down as being fake and shite from the moment it started.

Even Clara started mocking the overuse of the screw driver in that prison scene.
