My genre's thriller... What's yours?
September 7th on HBO at 9 PM eastern.

Hooray, the final season of Terence Winter's prohibition era gangster show is here and we are time skipping 7 years to 1931! That is not nearly enough time to get over Richard, but here we are. This season only has 8 episodes and will apparently have multiple flashbacks to Nucky's upbringing and his days working for the Commodore. Also Mr. Prezbo(Jim True-Frost) is joining the cast as Elliot Ness. Here is the HBO trailer with the obligatory chorus girl rear end shots spliced between the violence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDRcAWjyUYM

The Cast: These people aren't dead yet but don't get too attached:

Enoch "Nucky" Thompson -Steve Buscemi
His wife left him, his best friend killed himself and his brother betrayed him. Again. Last season found him pretty much treading water and finally confessing that he wants out from under his empire.

Albert "Chalky" White -Michael K. Williams
Chalky lost both his family and his business in his war with Narcisse last season. The finale found him in exile in Havre de Grace, Maryland, looking very much like a defeated man.

Nelson Van Alden aka George Mueller -Michael Shannon
Van Alden has Mr. Magoo'ed his way to a place of trust and power in Capone's organization through a series of unfortunate mistakes and mishaps. Finally seems to be embracing it though.

Charles "Lucky" Luciano -Vincent Piazza
Lucky didn't do much last season, just continued his push into heroin and growing in power. Features prominently in the ads for this season though.

Eli Thompson -Shea Wingham
After killing a federal agent who was just being such a dickhead he was exiled to Chicago to go hang out with Van Alden and Capone. He avenged Eddie, so partnering with Van Alden is a pretty fair reward.

Gillian Darmody -Gretchen Mol
She ended the season pretty much just outraged that everyone else gets to kill the poo poo out of everyone else but she murders just one dude and gets busted in a ludicrous months long undercover con by Ron Livingston of all people. She's probably starting the season in jail or an insane asylum or something.

Al Capone -Stephen Graham
Al lost his chill as hell brother, but got handed the reins of Johnny Torrio's empire in Chicago and the war with the North Side that comes with it. He is the only one having any fun.

Margaret Rohan/Schroeder/Thompson -Kelly Macdonald
Margaret has successfully kicked Nucky out of her life and started over in New York City. She has a finger still hooked to organized crime however, as she is providing Arnold Rothstein with insider secrets (and cake) she obtains from her job in exchange for a swanky apartment.

And if you are still feeling raw about Richard, let him speak to you of Murderer Heaven.

Also let's here it for Leon Sebso

It's pretty dope.
Hopefully there won't be too many worthless shots of Chaulky staring at a songstress this season. Seriously though I hope the Van Alden storyline finally bears fruit. I'm also glad that someone else thought that Livingston subplot was ridiculous.

That said I am looking forward to this season. I'm going to miss this show dearly.

Well this season certainly snuck up on me. Had no idea it was the final one though. :(

Bring on more Van Alden and Capone please!

This season should be Nucky time traveling to present-day Atlantic City and trying to save the Revel Casino from closing.

Also, looking back on the series, this pops out as my favorite scene, I'm gonna miss this show:

I'm really interested to see how far they go into flashback land. Like, I really want them to go full Boardwalk Babies, with lil Nucky and lil Chalky kicking lil Mickey out of their treehouse club so he makes his own rival club with lil Arnold's backing.

So uh, historically Arnold Rothstein was assassinated in 1928, so I guess we're just skipping past that? Maybe we'll get a montage.

I'm really bummed about that. After the way last season ended I was so, sooo excited for a Michael Stuhlbarg/Kelly McDonald team up.

I wish we'd gotten another full season of that and Capone's rise and Van Alden/Eli palling around before this final season.

poo poo this came out of nowhere, and it's the LAST season? And it's only 8 episodes? And it time-skips to the 30s?

That's all pretty depressing news :smith:

I think you meant greatly depressing :v:

(because they're in the great depression. Its a reference to a historical event that took place in the late 20s and early 30s, which many attribute to the rise of Adolf Hitler, who killed over 8 million Jews, the survivors of which established Israel who, today, are a shining beacon of Democracy in an otherwise brutal and oppressive region of the world)

Where do the writers come up with these crazy twists!?!

I'm holding out hope that since they are doing flashbacks that we might get more Rothstein. Stuhlberg was so good, I just can't imagine that he doesn't get a proper send off.

I think I said the same thing at the beginning of last season, but I always enjoy this show a ton when it's on, and I recommend it to a lot of people, but the premiere always sneaks up on me and I feel like I've completely forgotten the show even exists, if that makes any sense at all.

I really hope we see the start of the Van Alden-Eli buddy cop movie tonight.

Well that's my story.

I really don't care about young Nucky. I think we've learned enough about his character by this point. You've got 8 episodes. Why am I not seeing Capone or Van Alden in the premiere?

Everything else was pretty solid, though it's too early to tell if Chalky's storyline will be worth anything, and I really don't want to see Margaret connected back to Nucky in some convoluted way but I don't see where else that will go.

Yeah regarding the flashbacks I always thought the show hit just the right amount of subtlety with Nucky's past. I figured one could fill in the blanks. But we'll definitely be seeing how he handed Gillian off to the Commodore and everything associated with that act (which Terrance Winter has always said is a very important moment in Nucky's turn to the dark side, and is the reason Gillian continues to remain in the show). Hell, they made the flashbacks pretty well so it doesn't bother me a whole lot.

Definitely wanted some Chicago action though. Now we only have 7 potential hours of Eli / Van Alden tomfoolery.

I couldn't understand the dialogue in the jail break scene. What did the other prisoner want Chalky to do for him on the telephone?

Also how come lucky has a lazy eye now that was random..

edit: after reading wikipedia about luciano.. it says "In October 1929, Luciano was forced into a limousine at gun point by three men, beaten and stabbed, and dumped on a beach on Staten Island. He somehow survived the ordeal but was forever marked with a scar and droopy eye. The identity of his abductors was never established. When picked up by the police after the beating, Luciano said that he had no idea who did it. However, in 1953, Luciano told an interviewer that it was the police who kidnapped and beat him.[18] Another story was that Maranzano ordered the attack.[19] The most important consequence of this episode was the press coverage it engendered, introducing Luciano to the New York public." Probably would've been cool to see that in the show.

He was confused by the whole concept of the telephone, not really understanding how it worked and assumed it needed some special skill. So he wants Chalky to be charge of using it at their hideout.

I could seriously do without these flashbacks, but at least they're well done. I have a feeling Winter wanted to revisit The Commodore after having to alter the character to accommodate Jimmy's exit (just a guess.)

I am going to miss this show. It's one of the most beautifully shot shows on American television.

They also had to change the Commodore's story because Dabney Coleman got cancer while they were filming.

Ya it's bad that they won't get to reward the people who stuck around despite some pretty inconsistent writing, but at least it won't go the way of certain other HBO shows that have lived past it's prime. I'm hoping they return to a story that the established characters themselves grow, instead of running Gangster-of-the-Season arcs. I can't be the only person who was disappointed by the overall effect new characters had on the pacing of the plot.

IIRC it's what brought about the stroke story arc (because he couldn't talk in real life) and also meant they had to film all of Coleman's scenes for the entire season first.

No.

The greatest moment in my life was realizing that I didn't need a belt to be happy.
Like others posted earlier, it sucks that they didn't show the death of Rothstein. He's been in almost every single episode since the first one and all he gets is Meyer saying he was at AR's funeral and they left it at that. They did a great job of foreshadowing it in Season 4 but it still feels unsatisfying, both for the story and also for the actor.

Otherwise that was a pretty great episode. It started off slow but I'm already on board with this season and the preview makes it look pretty insane. So many people are going to die.

It was when Nucky ran into Lanksy in Cuba. You probably missed it because Lansky only ever refers to him as "AR."
