POI RETURNS FOR ITS FINAL SEASON MAY 3RD 2016 Newcomers read to the bottom of this post only! "You are being watched. The government has a secret system —a machine— that spies on you every hour of every day. I designed the machine to detect acts of terror, but it sees everything. Violent crimes involving ordinary people. The government considers these people irrelevant. We don’t. Hunted by the authorities, we work in secret. You'll never find us. But victim or perpetrator, if your number’s up, we’ll find you." Person of Interest is a sci-fi action series created by Jonathan Nolan (co-writer of The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, The Prestige and Memento). If you haven't been watching, it’s recommended that you go through the first three seasons as soon as possible with the understanding that it takes a while to find its footing. (Ep. 7 is where it starts to get good, Ep. 13’s a good go/no go point.) Despite its procedural nature, every episode is required viewing, even the rough ones at the top of the series. They each dish out necessary backstory and mythology. SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS: (Gifs courtesy of VDay, THANK YOU VDAY) ”The Machine and I couldn’t save the world. We had to settle for protecting the 7 people who might be able to take it back, so we gave Samaritan a blind spot: 7 key servers that hardcodes it to ignore 7 carefully crafted new identities. When the whole world is watched, filed, indexed, numbered, the only way to disappear is to appear, hiding our true identities inside a seemingly ordinary life. You’re not a free man anymore, Harold; you’re just a number. We have to become these people now, and if we don’t, they’ll find us, and they’ll kill us. I’m sorry Harold; I know it’s not enough. A lot of people are gonna die: people who might have been able to help. Everything is changing. I don’t know if it’ll ever get better, but it’s going to get worse. But the Machine asked me to tell you something before we part. You once told John the whole point of Pandora’s Box is that once you’ve opened it, you can’t close it again. She wanted me to remind you how the story ends: When everything is over, when the worst has happened, there’s still one thing left in Pandora’s Box… Hope.” The Machine: The Machine is an artificial intelligence created by Harold Finch in the wake of 9/11. Its purpose is to analyze government feeds and predict acts of violence, be they on a massive (relevant) or minor (irrelevant) scale. Over the course of the series the Machine has grown in its capabilities, freeing itself from some of its more restrictive shackles and designating a trustworthy human as its physical eyes, ears and voice. Throughout all this the Machines primary goal has never wavered: to protect what it oversees and save as many lives as possible, no matter what the cost. But a machine can only do so much. Samaritan: Created by Finch’s MIT colleague Arthur Claypool, Samaritan is the sword to the Machine’s shield: An open system that can divulge all the information it finds and be specially targeted at anyone its owner desires. After failing to gain control of the Machine in season 2, Decima Technologies stole the drives containing Samaritan’s code and spent the latter half of season 3 completing the system. Throughout the process of preparing Samaritan they also managed to expose the Machine’s existence to America via a third party, prompting the Government shutting down the ISA’s Northern Lights Program. (Team Relevant) With a privatized surveillance system, the government can shift the blame, so they have given Decima Technologies complete access to all their feeds. Samaritan, however, is much more than a machine, and Decima is much more interested in what it wants than what the government does. Team Irrelevant: Designation: SECONDARY OPERATIONS Classification: Vigilante Group Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) Designation: ADMIN Real Name: [UNKNOWN] “It was only after I taught the Machine people mattered that it was able to start helping them. I’d like to do the same for you, if you’d let me.” The elusive multi-billionaire who created the Machine operates as its primary agent in dealing with irrelevant threats. He specializes in creating covers, altering digital information, and payouts. With the advent of Samaritan, Finch and his team have been forced to go into hiding using a blind spot implanted in Samaritan’s servers at the eleventh hour. They’ll have to be careful, but the numbers keep coming, and there’s still work to be done. Likes: Sencha Green Tea (one sugar), Red Headed Artists Dislikes: Guns, Killing John Reese (Jim Caviezel) Designation: ASSET Real Name: [REDACTED] “I’m not going to threaten to kill you; I’m going to kill you.” Former Green Beret and CIA Wet work Operative with a hero complex, Reese is Finch’s right hand man. A veteran covert operative, Reese is usually the first one in on any mission that requires undercover infiltration. Likes: Donuts, T-boning cars Dislikes: Bow ties, Men who hurt women Sameen Shaw (Sarah Shahi) Designation: ASSET Real Name: [REDACTED] “You’re right, I did work for the government, and I do want revenge. But if that work taught me anything it’s that how you do matters as much as what you do. By that metric you’re all just terrorists, and I kill terrorists.” After being burned by the government and saved by Reese and Finch in Season 2, this former Marine turned ISA Assassin brought her skills as a highly efficient operator to the team. Also acts as the team’s Medic, having gone through med school before being kicked out for her sociopathic tendencies. Likes: Big Guns, Fast Cars, Food, Bear, Killing Dislikes: Pretty much everything else, Root especially Designation: ANALOG INTERFACE Probability of Marriage/Procreation: 0.04% “The Universe is infinite and chaotic and cold, and there has never been a plan. At least not ‘til now.” After the Machine freed itself, it chose the fanatical hacker Root to be its voice and hands in the physical world. Spending most of the last seasons hunting down “necessary” assets for the Machine, Root’s nihilistic views of humanity are tested during the struggle to stop Samaritan from coming online, leading the team to work willingly with her for a change. Likes: The Machine, Shaw Dislikes: Everything else Detective Lionel P. Fusco (Kevin Chapman) Designation: ASSET Knowledge of the Machine: None “What was I supposed to say? ‘Uh, sorry boss, Agent King is actually a super-powered nutball. Just ask my buddy the urban legend!’” The team’s NYPD Liaison. Formerly a corrupt cop Reese forced into being his mole in the department, Fusco grew to appreciate what they were doing. Played a major role in the eventual take down of HR together with his former partner Joss Carter. Likes: Falafel, Supermodels Dislikes: Drinking Bear (Graubaer’s Boker) Breed: Belgian Malinois Best?: Yes Zoe Morgan (Paige Turco) Designation: IRRELEVANT Occupation: Information Broker/Fixer "Little gift from John" An occasional ally to the team, Zoe Morgan understands the underbelly and inner workings of New York City like the back of her own hand. She has maintained a casual romance with Reese since mid S2. The Boys Designation: TERTIARY OPERATIONS Classification: Hacker Team Daizo (Alex Shimizu), Jason Greenfield (Michael Esper) and Daniel Casey (Joseph Mazello) “You’re that government hit man who made me pull out my molars!” “That’s messed up.” A group of hackers Root saved over the course of season 3. Responsible for creating the blindspot in Samaritan’s servers that ignore them and Team Irrelevant. Northern Lights (Team Relevant): Designation: PRIMARY OPERATIONS Classification: Government Cell Control (Camryn Manheim) Designation: ASSET Real Name: [REDACTED] “As a sworn officer of the US Government, I can neither confirm nor deny anything pertaining to this matter, and I will say the same drat thing to every single question until you put that gun to my head and pull the trigger.” The woman in charge of the ISA's Northern Lights Program, which dealt with the relevant numbers the machine provided. Control was a survivor of the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, sending her on a ruthless crusade to make sure nothing like it ever happened again. When knowledge of the Machine went public, she was forced to shut Northern Lights down. Now that Samaritan is active and providing information to her, who knows what she’ll do next? Ross Garrison (John Doman) Designation: ASSET Occupation: United States Senator "You want me to give a private corporation access to the government feeds, to 300 million Americans; just so you can sell the information back to us?" The public face of the Northern Lights Program, Garrison's job was to ensure legislation relating to surveillance went through quietly and without scrutiny. When the Program was exposed, the Senator had to resort to a third party for a solution that could afford plausible deniability to the Government and the ISA. Decima Technologies: Designation: CONFLICTING OPERATIONS Classification: Private Information Contractor John Greer (John Nolan) Designation: THREAT Real Name: [UNKNOWN] “In twenty years’ time, life on Earth will begin to resemble the myths of the ancient Greeks: A pantheon of super intelligent beings will watch over us, using human agents to meddle in our affairs.” The Director of Operations for Decima Technologies. As a survivor of World War 2 and spy during the cold war, Greer has become disillusioned with the political systems of the world and yearns for a new rule under a just and logical being. Was revealed to be the mastermind behind the anti-surveillance terrorist group known as Vigilance, used to expose the Machine, shut down Northern Lights, and get the government to allow Samaritan access to its feeds. Now, with his long game ending in success, he simply waits for Samaritan’s commands. Jeremy Lambert (Julian Ovenden) Designation: THREAT Real Name: [UNKNOWN] "Anything else I can do for you, sir?" Greer's right hand man since long before the events of the show. He was one of the Decima agents responsible for the events of RAM, events which would later bring Team Irrelevant together as a whole. Outliers: Designation: The Evolution of Organized Crime Classification: Criminal Empire Carl Elias (Enrico Colantoni) Designation: IRRELEVANT Alias: Charlie Burton ”Oh no! No my friend is going to kill you. I’m just gonna watch.” Unwittingly saved by Reese back in season 1, the criminal mastermind Elias has slowly seen himself stripped of opposition over the years thanks to both his own actions and Team Irrelevant’s. With HR and the Russians out of the picture, Elias is poised to be the sole criminal enterprise in New York City. That is of course, unless a new enemy rears its head. Scarface (David Valcin) Designation: IRRELEVANT Real Name: Anthony Marconi ”Thank you… for saving my boss.” Elias’ extremely loyal right hand man, Scarface is the one who tends to get his hands dirty so his boss doesn’t have to. The Fallen: Status: Deceased Detective Joss Carter (Taraji P. Henson) Designation: ASSET Span: 1x01 to 3x09 Last words:”Don’t let this… (change you.)” NYPD Detective who served as Fusco’s partner and fellow Liaison to the team. Died after orchestrating a takedown of the corrupt police organization, HR. Carter functioned as the moral compass for the team before her death, and with her out of the picture it’s now up to Fusco to make sure the team honors her memory by staying true to it. Nathan Ingram (Brett Cullen) Designation: AUX_ADMIN Span: 1x02 to 2x22 (Flashbacks) Last words:”It’s time for us to face the music.” Finch’s partner in building the Machine and the creator of the backdoor through which the Machine gives the team irrelevant numbers. Nathan was the first person to use the irrelevant information to try and save innocent lives. When Finch stopped him he attempted to leak the Machine’s existence to the press, leading to his assassination via a ferry bombing Northern Lights allowed to happen. These events (which also left Finch crippled) led to Harold taking up the mantle and founding the team we know today. Robert N. Hersh (Boris McGiver) Designation: ASSET Span: 2x01 to 3x23 Last words:”I can get it! I can- ” Control’s chief lackey and Shaw’s mentor, Hersh has been a thorn in the team’s side from before it even existed, being responsible for the ferry bombing that killed Nathan and crippled Finch. Nevertheless, he was a loyal soldier who always did what he did because he believed it was best for his country. Died trying to prevent Decima's false flag attack. He couldn't get it. THIS SEASON: Cara Buono (Mad Men) will be joining the cast as a heavily recurring character described as a “femme fatale uniquely qualified to navigate the new world order created by Samaritan.” Monique Curnen (Lie to Me) has been cast as Fusco’s new police captain. She will first appear in episode 4x03 and is described as“New York-born and whip-smart.” Jamie Hector (The Wire) has also been cast in a recurring role. Jason Ritter (Gravity Falls) has been cast in a guest role in episode 4x05. I also thought that Fusco was not one of the people that Samaritan was given a blind spot tom, so he wouldn't have the Deviant -> Irrelevant? The Fusco thing was just because we needed an excuse to have both a funny and serious Fusco gif loop like the rest of the team, but yes he is not in the server blindspot. Bear wasn't blindspotted either :P. As for Root, i'm putting my faith in the poi wiki people being right as they are much bigger spergs about that stuff than I can hope to be, and they capitalize it.

A fairly sizable chunk of s3 is dedicated to fleshing her out and making her a more likable character now that she's not a full on villain. This all culminates in 3x17, which is one of my favorite episodes. But I liked Root to begin with so your mileage may vary I guess!

Shaw knocked John out during the grenade launcher debacle exactly because he can't be puling that stuff anymore. Then they established that John would be relying on Elias for his more vigilante-esque acts. Shaw was pretty well covered during her sniping and got the hell out as soon as there was potential for her to be seen. The job stuff is kind of tangential outside of John now being partners with Fusco. We still don't know what Root does, though. The general idea, which I do have to admit was somewhat poorly executed, is that the team is supposed to have been split up and with their jobs for at least a few months, if not more. And now stuff is happening that is allowing the Machine to start acting again in order to prepare them for war, in this instance the Brotherhood creating that cell phone network. So they still have to watch and manage the way they operate, but now they can at least communicate freely. Considering how much of a full tilt back to the status quo most shows would pull off in this scenario, I'd say this isn't half bad.

I said this already, but really my only criticism is that they should have nailed down and stated once or twice in the episode how much time took place between the s3 finale and this premiere. You get the impression that it hasn't been that long otherwise which leads to the feeling that them springing back to action is a bit premature. If someone had been like "Yo it's been 5 months since we've been doing this crap I can't do this anymore Finch" or something like that it would go a long way dissuading that notion. I loved the episode in any case. We still don't know what Root is doing and Harold doesn't seem to be fully back in(though I expect him to inform the team about the new base by the end of the next ep) so I wouldn't say we are fully back in action just yet.

Also how amazing is the sound editing on this show? I don't just mean the baller song choice at the end, either. When John is about to set his stuff down at Carter's old desk her theme starts playing and he looks at Fusco and its just a great touch that the show refuses to forget about her.

I realize that's kind of been dropped from his character but it should have come back. Wait what are you talking about? JossiRossi posted:Something I noticed in the episode and meant to ask. Has Harold ever called the machine anything other than "it" before? In this episode he said, "Well she talks to you at least." Which I don't believe he'd ever said before, giving the machine much more of an identity than he'd be willing to allow normally. Based on everything that went down last season, I'm fairly sure him distancing himself from the machine is entirely linked to him accepting that it has evolved to the point of having a fully formed identity.
