Welcome to the 4th Main Match....War and Peace

In this game everyone controls a country surrounded by your other players. You must help your country prosper, in an attempt to be the strongest nation in the area. To do this you will direct your nation's industrial might towards instruments of war, elaborate fortifications, or peaceful construction of culture. Your decisions of your own nation as well as your relationships with the other nations will determine the fate of the continent.

Rules

1) Each player has a country with their own pool of influence.

2) Each round players will secretly choose to do one of three actions: build up their country, fortify their defenses, or declare war on one other country. Each action carries some risk and some reward:

Country A chooses Build, nobody declares war on them: Country A gains 3 influence

Country B chooses fortify: Country B neither gains nor loses influence

Country C declares war, one of three outcomes can happen
  • Country C declares war on Country A: Country C gains 5 influence, Country A loses 5 influence
  • Country C declares war on Country B: Country C loses 1 influence, Country B does not gain or lose any influence
  • Country C declares war on Country D who also declared war (on A, B, or C): both lose 1 influence.

3) You may not do the same action two rounds in a row. For example, if you fortify in Round 1, you must either build or declare war in Round 2.

4) Everyone will begin the game with 10 influence.

5) There will be 6 rounds with 15 minute breaks in between for strategy.

6) Each country's total will be revealed at the end of Round 3.

7) Countries cannot have negative points. They will remain in the game but have 0 points. They may continue to make actions as normal.

How to Win

The country with the most influence at the end of the 6th round is the winner. If there is a tie there will be joint winners.

If there is one winner they will receive 5 garnets plus 1 garnet for every 5 points they have. If there are multiple winners they will each receive 4 garnets (with no bonus). All winners will receive a token of life.

The loser will be the country with the fewest points at the end of the 6th round. If there are multiple losers then the winner(s) will choose the elimination candidate.

If there is a single winner they will receive an additional token of life to give away. If there are multiple losers one of them can be given the token of life.

Spending Garnets

You may spend Garnets during strategy time at a rate of 1 Garnet per 3 Influence. You may not do this after the end of Round 4. Garnet spending is done secretly via IRC message.

Game Flow

The game will take place in IRC and the thread in the following manner

15 minute strategy
Round 1 (submit action via IRC then wait for my announcement of the completion of the round before resuming strategy. You may remain in IRC but no talking during this time.)
15 minute strategy
Round 2
15 minute strategy
Round 3
*Mid-game results posted in thread*
15 minute strategy (last chance to spend garnets)
Round 4
15 minute strategy
Round 5
15 minute strategy
Round 6
*Results posted, winner and loser declared*

The game starts in 5 minutes to give everyone a chance to read the rules and ask any questions. Please do not enter the IRC rooms until I say strategy time has begun.

Is our influence told to us privately or is it shared to all?

Country C declares war, one of three outcomes can happen
Country C declares war on Country A: Country C gains 5 influence, Country A loses 5 influence
Country C declares war on Country B: Country C loses 1 influence, Country B does not gain or lose any influence

^ These are two of the three possible outcomes of a war declaration, but I don't see the rules on what causes which outcome. Can you explain? Is it based on fortifications?

So if two countries declare war on the same target, the two countries that declared would lose influence? What of the target country?

I assume it is based on what action the other country took that round

If you were building, country A, and someone attacks you... you lose 5 influence and the other person gains the 5. If you were fortifying, and are attacked, you wouldn't gain or lose any influence. But the person attacking you would lose one.

No, you're thinking of it wrong.

War against a building country: warring country +5, building country -5
War against a fortifying country: warring country -1, fortifying country 0
War against another warring country (no matter the other warring country's target): both warring countries -1

Build and nobody declares war on your: +3
Fortify, no matter what happens: 0

Does that make more sense?

Yes, that makes perfect sense.

And we only know what even our own influence is after round 3? We don't know what happens or what our influence is after regular rounds?

I'm not against that, if you're not joking around.

That reminds me, though, in the show when they did that game (well, the one similar to it, Tactical Yutnori), the partners both had to put up a garnet, with the partner of the winner getting both. I'm a bit surprised that didn't happen for this game, though I suppose "you might lose a garnet" might have dissuaded people from helping out; in the show they had no say in it and the games happened immediately afterward, so it was a bit different.

Of course, we could all win, if we simply build/fortify...but the producers may not like that.
