What are my fancy SSD (non-2.5) options with a B450 Tomahawk Max and a 2600x? I can't make heads or tails of what's compatible with what or if I'm turning off lanes or anything.

It'll be in your motherboard manual but generally what's going on here is that a limited number of lanes means that using some M.2 spots on a motherboard will essentially lock out a SATA port from being available for a drive. Your motherboard should have a list or a chart showing which motherboard M.2 slot affects which SATA port. You just check and see where you shouldn't plug your drives into, it's not too bad. If you're looking for actual m.2 drive recs, the Western Digital Blue series is really good value IMO. Otherwise Samsung stuff is the standard but more expensive.

Yeah I kinda get that, but what I'm more wondering is if it's worth it to put m.2 drives in this motherboard or if they're going to be held back by the speed of the PCIE slots. how much better is NVMe compared to SATA? I want to get like a 1 TB drive to really enjoy the fast loading speeds (I have my OS and a few games on a 240 GB, but obviously that's kinda small), and I'm undecided if I want to go through with picking out and figuring out NVMe drives or if sticking with SATA will be good enough.

It’s significantly faster and these days the price difference isn’t enough imo to go SSD if you have a slot for NVMe. I think it’s 3x as fast as an SSD at least in my benchmarks when I tested it.

NVMes benefits are really only seen at higher queue depths which you aren't likely to encounter in consumer workloads, you need very large transfers to take advantage of them. But there really isn't a price premium so mise.

It's hard to tell the difference between SATA and NVMe for now, but DirectStorage will only work with NVMe so that may change down the road. There's little to no price premium for PCIe3 NVMe drives over SATA now so you may as well get one, but PCIe4 NVMe is a waste of money.

Is this the right place to ask about datacenter networking hardware? We're building out a small prototype system and have been looking at second hand Dells for our compute, which looks good. Most seem to have 10GB SFP+ networking, which is good because our application needs 10GB SFP networking. We need two stacks of switches, and I'm trying to find something that can give us redundancy, has all SFP+ ports if possible and can be managed over ssh/Ansible. Reasoning for SFP+ is because we have access to a bunch of DACs/SFP modules already. For now we're only concerned about ever having one rack in our Colo.

What's the cheapest way to single cable from a laptop to 4 monitors? My wife's work decided to get rid of the remote desktop scheme they've been using and instead make her lug this 17" monstrosity of a laptop back and forth. She got this: https://www.zdnet.com/product/hp-zbook-17-g6/ I was thinking maybe an external dock for the video card out of the desktop she had been using (this 4 hdmi port geforce 710 https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DS13LLZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1), though they all seem super overbuilt for what I need. Monitors are two 1440s (display port and hdmi) and two 1080s (only HDMI), and its all spreadsheets and the like stuff, so don't need a ton of performance. Is it possible for a SATA or power cable to cause HDDs to start clicking? I have replaced my brand-new 3TB Toshiba four times. Every time, right after I plug it in, it starts clicking. When I switch it to a different SATA/power cable, it continues clicking nonetheless. It is the third drive in my desktop (SSD + HDD + HDD). All my other drives are doing perfectly fine — my Hitachi is at least six years old! I have to assume I’m having very bad luck, or my cables are busted somehow.

Clicking is usually a mechanical failure where the heads are hitting the platter or failing to move correctly. The heads are controlled by the controller on the disk and it just gets power from the power cable and receives commands and sends data over the sata cable. I'm sure it's not impossible for a bad cable to somehow break the controller and cause it to go haywire, but I'd be surprised if it could somehow mechanically damage the disk. With that many replacements, I'd certainly try some new cables just in case, though. Bad power could cook a disk controller but I'd expect it to just not work instead of going to a clicking failure mode. Weird stuff happens when there's potential bad power issues, though.

I am looking into buying a new motherboard, I have found a deal on atx board with inbuilt wi-fi. Is their any negatives with on-board Wi-fi over buying a dedicated wi-fi card? I do have issues with signal sometimes but I am not sure if it worth spending $30+ on a card when I can get it with my motherboard for a little extra

Thank you Not as far as I'm aware. By the time you financed and started the development of some uber card the next gen would be out and whatever you were working on would already be outclassed. The billionare thing to do is basically to just SLI 3 or 4 of the best current card together and even then you end up with a bunch of issues sometimes and have to turn them off. I have to think people with more money than anything else aren't really sitting around playing games anyways.
