WARNING: BY READING THIS THREAD YOU ARE VOLUNTEERING FOR D-CLASS TESTING ON THE EFFECTS OF SELF-INSERT CHARACTERS, FANFICTION, AND [DATA EXPUNGED].

For those not in know, the SCP Foundation (SCP stands for "Secure Contain Protect") is what you'd get if you crossed the X-Files with CSI, with the same level of investigative competence. It all got started as a one-off joke on 4chan's paranormal /x/ boards with an unusual copypasta. If that article reads suspiciously close to a Weeping Angel from Doctor Who, consider that it began to show up shortly after the first Weeping Angel episode aired in 2007.

Since the internet can't let go of anything, fast forward to 2014 and there are now over 2,000 paranormal objects, creatures, and phenomena analyzed in a quasi-scientific manner. Most are forgettable and interchangeable (just like most X-Files and CSI episodes!), some are hilariously awful, and a very few are actually great horror. Most SCPers confuse killing tons of people with automatically being scary; their ultimate horror movie monster just effortlessly mutilated 23 armed guards, it's so badass you guys.

And so, so many "ongoing plotlines" with "original characters" across multiple articles that can only be completely followed by someone dumb enough to engage in their infamously drama-filled forums. There are other much more knowledgeable posters on this subject and I'll let them fill us in if they decide to drop by. I've taken a look into the hive--even registered an account once--and I'm not doing that to myself.

So what are you waiting for?! Dive into a madness that is only Lovecraftian because of its userbase! Search out your favorite, your worst favorites, maybe involve yourself in a years-long character drama that develops into a tragic online polyamorous relationship with wannabe horror writers that will leave you a bitter shell of who you used to be! Then (this is the important part) share that [DATA EXPUNGED] with the rest of us!

I was looking for that one SCP about the machine that can refine stuff or make it coarser, but I found this which I thought was pretty interesting. It probably would work better as a short story than a wiki article, but that's what I feel about a lot of the good ones on the site.

My favorites have always been the crazy exploration ones, like the ship a few of you have posted, and the architect thing. I know there was another one that involved going through a body of water and ending up somewhere with sharp, red grass. And then at the end of the log there's an addendum that said something about the SCP described doesn't exist and the logs just showed up somewhere. Anyone know which one it is?

EDIT: Ah, found it! http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-354 spooky red pool that has never been explored. But some exploration logs showed up in the office anyways! :spooky:

The calculator is one of my favorites. I'm on my phone and can't look up the numbers, but I enjoy the SCPs that are both silly and strange: the vending machine with an attitude that keeps giving one researcher nothing but acorns (I think?), the propeller plane that thinks its a bird, the phonograph that loves The Rainbow Connection, the giant arm who calls every week to complain about being stuck, MOTH HELM.

I feel as if a lot of the "main staff" of SCP wiki forget there are wonderful things that need protection from plain, old, jerkface humanity. Like the old school funhouse cowboy prop who thinks he's a real boy, or the eye-pods that render 173 harmless.

The acorns were actually apple seeds. It started with the vending machine that takes only Yen and gives out snacks based on how much you feed it. Sometimes absurd things came out of it and the machine would apparently give more ancient snack types if old bills were put in and really, really incredible things if lots of money was put in. One of the researchers gave it one Yen to see what would happen and it gave him an apple seed. The machine apparently got pissed off and mangled reality to keep giving the guy apple seeds when interacting with other SCPs. Kind of a funny touch.

Yeah that's the problem with SCP being a thing on the internet of moderate fame. Every idiot suddenly wants to be a part of it and attach their name to it for the e-cred. Where a lot of people fail is thinking that weird fiction is all about HORRIBLE TERROR and SECRETS MAN WAS NOT MEANT TO KNOW. In an effort to make TEH SCARYEST THING EVAR they just go over the top and make it insanely dangerous. Something doesn't need to have 9,000 ways to kill you to be scary. The best SCPs are the ones that are completely harmless but would still be unnerving as hell to be in the same room as. Or they're stuff that just flat out ignores the rules of reality as we know them.

The Flesh That Hates is a good one for the latter part. http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-610 It won't kill you. That's now what it does. You get infected by it and it takes you over. Then it makes you aggressively spread it.

The traffic light tree is a good idea of a thing that violates The Rules but doesn't actually hurt anything. http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-376 It really makes no sense and is creepy basically because "wait what the hell?"

Other times you just get weird things where the "protect" part comes in. Cassy comes to mind. http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-085

The Great Twist
I like the underlying idea behind 231, that they have to do the worst things imaginable to stop something even worse - people have to give up everything just to save anything. Being that rapey is just kinda, yeah... Seems too rape fantasy. And then there's the fact the people involved can get their memory's erased, so there's no sacrifice.

And before anyone gets all lovely and takes what I wrote as an endorsement for the entry, it's not. It's a bit of an example of the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good, which can be a promising premise.
