"C'mon India, Let's Football"

Yes, that's right, India have tried to drum up national interest in the world's biggest sport by turning it into a bastardisation of a bastardisation of their own national sport, so as the Indian Premier League is to cricket, the Indian Super League shall be to football.

ISL Website posted:

Hero Indian Super League is India’s unrivalled football championship scheduled to kick off on 12th October 2014. It is co-promoted by IMG-Reliance (the joint venture between IMG and Reliance Industries), Star India and supported by All India Football Federation (AIFF). India’s leading industrialists and celebrities from sports as well as the Indian film industry have invested in owning the Indian Super League’s eight franchises. These are based out of Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Guwahati, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune.

The League is committed to investing in stadium refurbishment in the eight identified venues and also to a strong grassroots development programme that will create a platform to groom football talent in the country. For the first time in Indian football, globally renowned footballers will be playing alongside the best Indian footballers. With a mission to revolutionise the sport, Hero Indian Super League is positioned as a high quality and dynamic league that will elevate Indian football to an international level.

Globally renowned footballers? Sign me up! Much like the IPL, and indeed MLS (this thread is American Compatible), a bunch of washed-up old has-beens and opportunists looking for a massive payday are all thrown into a room, where the eight teams take turns to drag them out one by one to play for them. They each get one "marquee" player, as well as a bunch more foreigners of varying talent (there's a partial, probably accurate list here). As we all love homegrown rules, it should be noted that "each team must also have 14 Indian domestic players, four of which being local players to the city", and the starting 11 for each must contain at least five Indians.

So, how does it work? Well, the eight teams (see below) all play each other twice in a mini-league, with the top four going through to the "finals", which work like the playoffs in England, two two-leg semis and a final, all taking place over a couple of months at the end of the year (12th October - 20th December). There's no promotion or relegation for these storied franchises!

---

The Eight Teams (provisionally):

Atlético de Kolkata

Info: http://www.indiansuperleague.com/isl-2014/teams/atletico-de-kolkata
Notable Owners: Kolkata Games and Sports Pvt. Ltd. - a consortium including Atletico Madrid (hence the name) and Indian cricket legend Sourav Ganguly
Manager: Antonio Lopez Habas
Notable Players: Luis Garcia (36, Liverpool, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona), Josemi (34, Liverpool, Villarreal), Climax Lawrence (giggle)
Plastic Status: Strong for fans of Atletico and Liverpool. Very Spanish. They play at the Salt Lake Stadium too apparently so earn some America Points.

-

Chennai TitansChennaiyin FC

Info: http://www.indiansuperleague.com/isl-2014/teams/team-chennai
Notable Owners: Inter Milan, Abhishek Bachchan (Bollywood star), MS Dhoni
Manager: Marco Materazzi
Notable Players: Marco Materazzi (41, Inter Milan, the headbutt), Bernard Mendy (33, PSG, Bolton, Hull), Bojan Djordjic (32, Manchester United, Plymouth, a million others), Elano (33, Man City)
Plastic Status: Ronaldinho was rumoured, but sadly decided not to bother. Still, fans of Inter and PSG may be interested. Chennai were rather hastily cobbled together at the last minute - they've yet to reveal their official crest, WAH plus they've not even got Facebook or Twitter accounts, shocking. They finally have a social network set up, rejoice!

-

Delhi Dynamos FC

Info: http://www.indiansuperleague.com/isl-2014/teams/delhi-dynamos-fc
Notable Owners: Feyenoord, DEN Networks (some TV network)
Manager: Harm van Veldhoven
Notable Players: Alessandro Del Piero (39, Juventus, Sydney), uh, Morten Skoubo (34, played a couple of games for West Brom)
Plastic Status: Vague BeNeLux supremacy, and with Del Piero there that's cool too.

-

FC Goa

Info: http://www.indiansuperleague.com/isl-2014/teams/fc-goa
Notable Owners: Nope
Manager: Zico
Notable Players: Robert Pires (40, Arsenal, Villa[rreal]), uh... Miroslav Slepicka? (32, Sparta, Zagreb)
Plastic Status: Zico and Pires paper over the cracks of a fairly poor lineup, though they're yet to announce their marquee signing.

-

FC Pune City

Info: http://www.indiansuperleague.com/isl-2014/teams/fc-pune-city
Notable Owners: Fiorentina, Salman Khan (Bollywood star)
Manager: Franco Colomba
Notable Players: David Trezeguet (36, Juventus, Monaco), Bruno Cirillo (37, various)
Plastic Status: All very Italian. Forza Pune.

-

Kerala Blasters FC

Info: http://www.indiansuperleague.com/isl-2014/teams/kerala-blasters-fc
Notable Owners: Sachin Tendulkar, Indian cricketing deity
Manager: David James (yes, that David James)
Notable Players: David James (44, England legend), Michael Chopra (30, Newcastle, Ipswich, Sporting Chance), Iain Hume (30, lower league journeyman)
Plastic Status: Will be a popular choice, especially with David James there, also Chopra's decided he's Indian and wants to be the Tendulkar of football, so watching his efforts will be a laugh.

-

Mumbai City FC

Info: http://www.indiansuperleague.com/isl-2014/teams/team-mumbai
Notable Owners: Ranbir Kapoor (Bollywood star)
Manager: Peter Reid (for it is he)
Notable Players: Nicolas Anelka (35, pretty much everyone), Freddie Ljungberg (37, Arsenal, West Ham), Manuel Friedrich (35, Mainz, Leverkusen)
Plastic Status: Everyone loves a bit of Fred & Nic. Gets bonus points for being Mumbai, but loses them due to Peter loving Reid.

-

Northeast United FC

Info: http://www.indiansuperleague.com/isl-2014/teams/north-east-united-fc
Notable Owners: John Abraham (Bollywood star), Shillong Lajong FC
Manager: Ricki Herbert (former NZ manager)
Notable Players: Joan Capdevila (36, Deportivo la Coruna, Villarreal), Cornell Glen (32, various teams in America), Alexandros Tzorvas (32, Greece)
Plastic Status: Fair to good, solid mix of nationalities. Was probably the name of Newcastle in a Pro Evo game at some point.

The Fixtures:

http://static.indiansuperleague.com/pdf/HeroISLFixtures2014.pdf - They've changed, clicky for the most recent version.

Your collective diaries will be bursting at the seams after taking all these juicy fixtures down. Here's a few that might be of interest:

12/10/14 - Atletico de Kolkata vs Mumbai City - the opening game, and an early chance to catch Nicolas "The Incredible Sulk" Anelka in action, before he goes missing in action Anelka's ban extends to the first three games so his debut's actually the 28th.
22/10/14 - Delhi Dynamos vs Pune City - Del Piero and Trezeguet on opposing sides, mmm, tasty
02/11/14 - Mumbai City vs Kerala Blasters - two great English minds at loggerheads, Peter Reid and David James
20/12/14 - TBC vs TBC - what a final we have in store

---

So, there you go. As for watching the drat thing, it's being broadcast in India through STAR Sports ("the tournament itself is expected to be broadcast on five channels: Star Sports 1, Star Sports 3, Star Sports HD, Jalsa and Asianet"), so there will probably be streams and the like. Hopefully more info will come through closer to kick off. No doubt FA executives will be watching with interest as they look for ways to 'fix' the England national side while skirting all the major issues. Chopra's ruled himself out boys, gotta look elsewhere.

I hate you all.
This is depressing to me because there is a rich history of club football in India with some awesome narratives and rivalries and it's going to get drowned out next to this gaudy shitpile of a league. I can't wait for goals to be renamed DLF Maximums, saves to be renamed Tata Incredible Stops, and white cheerleaders from Eastern Europe to be flown in. Hooray!

It'll be interesting to see which way it all goes, so far it seems like they're really striving for Indian development over full-blown gimmickry, but if at half time in the opening game they trot out Janet Jackson I think you can dismiss that idea.
