HAIL TO THE VICTORS!

“When it comes to my childhood, I may not always remember exactly when something happened or exactly who was there, but I do know that it was 1980-something… and it was awesome.”

Season 1: Now available on DVD and digital download
Season 2: Wednesdays at 8:30 EST on ABC

Set in 1980-something, The Goldbergs is a mostly autobiographical show about creator Adam Goldberg's life growing up. You know... family, school, girls, and Star Wars.

quote:

Before there were parenting blogs, trophies for showing up and peanut allergies, there was a simpler time called the ‘80s. For geeky and movie obsessed youngest child Adam, these were his wonder years, and he faced them armed with a video camera to capture all the crazy. The Goldbergs are a loving family like any other -- just with a lot more yelling.

Cast

Adam Goldberg (Sean Giambrone) is our narrator (adult voice by Patton Oswalt) and youngest member of the family. Geeky and obsessed with movies, he films his entire life for our amusement.

Beverly Goldberg (Wendi McClendon-Covey) is (as Adam says) his "smother". A overbearing and overprotective mother who loves her kids, but still rules with 100% authority and zero sense of boundaries.

Murray Goldberg (Jeff Garlin) hates pants. He also tries to stay out of the way of his family's problems but keeps getting drawn in anyway.

Erica Goldberg (Hayley Orrantia) is the oldest child and only daughter. She's popular but don't think she is some dumb high school girl. She is smart (even if she doesn't want her friends to know it) and won't hessitate to protect her younger brothers.

"Pops" Solomon (George Segal) is Beverly's father and constant house-guest of the family. This old man isn't ready to slow down and is often seen around town woo-ing the ladies.

But all that is really just filler for the real star of the show: Barry Goldberg.

Barry (Troy Gentile) has big dreams... maybe too big. He's an aspiring NHL star, NBA player, and rapper (under the name "Big Tasty"). He feels things deeply and is often on the verge of an epic tantrum or an excited break dance. Barry’s a master of snap judgment – he constantly thinks his family is ganging up on him and he’s getting the short end of the stick. And he usually is. When he’s not training on the court, he spends his free time "rolling it out" at the Moonlight Skate Rink, practicing karate and torturing his younger brother.

Barry is the reason to love this show. Don't believe me? Just watch this:

This show is far, far better than I thought it would be when it premiered last year. It's quite funny... the cast has really good chemistry, but Beverly and Barry are the best. Barry running out of a room with his arms flailing behind him makes me crack up every time.

You're Not Welcome?
This show is my favorite half hour comedy, currently. Every episode is so drat charming even if it isn't laugh out loud funny. The casting couldn't be better and I'll never tire of Beverly's mad sweater game.

I think this is exactly how I feel, it's just a really nice and fun show with great characters. Not the most original thing storyline wise and it absolutely never matters. Hoping they realise after Season 1 that Barry is the best thing ever and continue to give him awesomeness to work with.

I love this show. It's like The Wonder Years for 80s kids. And also funny.

I blind-bought S1 on DVD (yep, I'm the one guy still buying a whole lot of TV on DVD) and I'm really loving it. Barry is my favourite character, but the cast all work really well. Great companion to The Middle.

Tonight:

Adam auditions for the school musical but gets cast in a non-leading role, so Beverly offers him a spot in a competing show. Elsewhere, Barry takes issue with Murray's habit of leaving sporting events early in order to beat traffic.

I was wondering what happened to this show. Glad it's back.

I really hope they build on that thing between Barry and his sisters friend.

It's kinda scary how much like Adam I was as a kid.

That scene reminded me a lot of the episode of The Office "Casino Night" where Dwight kissed Angela at the craps table in front of a few co-workers. She slapped him across the face but as she was walking away she cracked a little smile.

Pillbug
I wonder if they intentionally mess with the continuity. The royal wedding was in 1981, but Adam has a Back to the Future poster, and last season they went to the premiere of Return of the Jedi (and he tore apart a Revenge of the Jedi poster).

Yea I laughed my rear end off at the hawk. I didn't think they'd have a real hooded hawk.

This week's was good too. Barry's love rap was amazing.

Another great bit this week.

And the show is doing much better this season on Wednesdays. It's consistently getting better ratings than The Middle so I'm pretty confident in a third season.

This is my wife's favorite show, so I watch it every week.

I think it's pretty funny, and certainly a lot better than most of the poo poo that's getting trotted out on television now.

I'd imagine it makes it another couple years. I can't imagine that paying Segal and Garlin is that hard to do, which leaves the most expensive part of the show to be finding 80s poo poo.
