They've done long gags before that have at least contextually made sense, so yeah I actually don't think after 13 seasons it's much to ask for a long cutaway to at the very least work with the lead in gag in some small way.

Meanwhile, Lois is worried about Chris’ delusional relationship with his new girlfriend, but also sees it as an opportunity for Peter to copy Chris’ romantic gestures.

For those of you who don't get the reference, Encyclopedia Brown. I read a ton of these as a kid.
