I vaguely remember a music player app I used.

I think the app might've been designed as being a home DJ for parties but it was great for workout music too.

Sounds like Pacemaker AI DJ, which was discontinued after Spotify broke DJ style apps using thejr API to access their library via streaming.

Offtrack or Mixonset appear to be alternatives with an automising functionality from playlists, local or streaming. Algoriddim djay has a similar function too.

I loved those old DJ apps on Spotify back around 2012 - 2015, was really bummed to see them be sunset - I discovered so much music through an app that let users submit and upvote songs on a community playlist in real time.

It syncs well with my 2014 Accord, but I want to change it's library. It's so old I'm soliciting advice on how to update it without changing functionality. I used a program called Media Monkey last time, but it's hard to find info on this.

I've really got burnt out on how lovely Spotify DJ is for me. EIther it's stuck on some bizarre feedback loop and over-indexing on it's own suggestions as my personal taste or, more likely, there's some payola going on which heavily influences what it plays.

I don't mind daylist but if you don't dig the vibe you're kind of screwed in the moment.

iPods still sync just fine with iTunes or Apple Music.

Of course, if you've lost your original library then they will blow away what's already there.

Actually on the above question, is it possible to use Offtrack with just the local list try without signing up to the £39.99 subscription? I can’t find a way to get in to using the app without agreeing to a free trial followed by subscription.

Was wondering if you know of any unenshittified apps/ways I can read/edit/store sheet music on my iPad!

I've always been an Android user so I don't really know my way around this ecosystem, plus I don't really interact with sheet music. But maybe someone here has a good recommendation? I'm not certain what they mean by "unenshittified" in this context but I assume avoiding apps that run on terrible subscription models is preferable.

Lots of people use GoodReader for sheet music. It’s just a pdf reader with features.

I’ve heard of some folks using forScore on the iPad. It’s not free though but maybe there’s something there they would like.

ForScore is the way to go if they’re willing to buy the app - the pro subscription is not necessary.

I use it all the time across different ensembles. It really shines for musical theater pit playing - when the MD wants to cut out 35 measures and then jump back 3 pages and then stick some other section in as scene transition music, you can rearrange things so that it’s all in order and you don’t need to jump around in the music.

It has some annoyances but it’s by far the most widely used app for sheet music so any question that could come up has been answered online.

Sofa was just updated in TestFlight for podcasts. It’s still pretty janky but a WIP as far as builds go. I originally bought it as a centralized place to itemize all of the *content* I’ve been wanting to consume, eg ebooks, TV, Movies, Games. The dev is super responsive and nice in the discord as well.

FilmNoir is prettier and better laid out for movies and tv with Trakt support IMO but Sofa is a better all-in-one.

Either way, re: subscription talk earlier, I’ve purchased “lifetime” licenses for many apps even if it means the equivalent of 3-5 years upfront. Plus, the mental fuckery of another $2-5/m sub just eats away at me vs throwing $100-200 upfront and forgetting about it.

Most of the lifetime licenses are usually sold by smaller devs who have set the price point for that exact reason, as most users won’t dive into it. Flighty has also been worth it for me but I fly frequently each month as well.

Some apps, like Carrot, I never expect that option due to the operating costs of weather data for example.

So now it's a Podcast player too? Is the dev adding like all the niceties you'd expect from that nowadays, ex: chapter support, volume boost, speed options that stuff?

Reeder has podcast support too but I can't imagine using it for that.

Edit: Flighty is one of the nicest apps I've seen but I only use it when I'm flying which isn't that often so I'm glad I can just pay for a week of use or whatever when need be.

TBH I haven’t had a chance to really mess around with it as Overcast still works just fine. So no idea on the potential roadmap that you mentioned. I did run into syncing issues when I added a feed on macOS and tried to open it on iOS later though.

Overcast still has people complaining about the redesign and some Airplay 2 bugs, I don't really care about it. Marco still hasn't read my emails about letting me skip chapters with my steering wheel controls :argh:

Been hard to move away from Apple Podcasts anyways, I really like the redesign that got.

A few years back I worked with the guy who made Sofa, we were both UI/UX designers. He was one of the best to work with, hilarious and good guy. He was learning Swift on his own time and I’m not sure if he quit his full time work to support Sofa full time but he certainly understands the importance of research/testing/feedback/iterating.

Definitely a guy worth supporting. Happy to see him having success with his passion project.

The crashes are “only” weekly for me, but at least twice a week if I pause for a bit and hit play again it’ll think for a few seconds and decide to play an episode of something else instead.

The new UI is whatever I’m never looking at the app anyway, but it’s become so buggy since the code re-do.

So weird to have such different experiences. Overcast crashed on my sometime during the first week after the big update, but it hasn't since. I use it daily for podcasts and audiobooks, and I think I mess around with settings to a degree that it's not like I'm using it stock. I only have 8 podcasts and 3-4 books at a time, so maybe that plays into it.

Yeah, I use Overcast a lot, with a lot more podcasts than you, but the only real issue I’ve had with it since the redesign came out is that occasionally when I try to resume playback it’ll jump to the next episode for some reason. But a bunch of people are obviously having more serious and frequent issues. Like you said, it’s weird.

I don’t get crashes with Overcast but I do find the CarPlay buggy in a way no other apps are (though I don’t really use many CarPlay apps to compare). About 1 in 10 times I try to use it I just get a completely black screen - I can start the podcast playing from the phone itself and it’ll sound fine, but can’t control it in any way from the car screen. When it’s in this bug state it’s still only Overcast affected - I can switch around to other CarPlay apps fine.

I think that’s an issue with some podcasts apps because I’ve had the same happen with Pocket Casts but never with Apple Podcasts.

Is there a reason why some articles in Apple News are locked behind News+, even though I can just straight up to go that publisher's website and read the same article for free without any paywall?

It's such a worthless app. I mean, I'm sure it's making them tons of money, god knows my dad sends me enough links from it and every time I have to explain we dont' subscribe.

Speaking of which, any good replacements yet? The last one I was into folded so they could re-imagine themselves as a social network that promptly died because surprise surprise most people who were on board for a news feed didn't want to stick around for twitter but lamer.

Browsing a news site witha phone is like getting teeth pulled, give me news+ any day, even the free version.

Being required to get the most expensive bundle to geta "discount" is trash. The only other thing on there worth getting is Apple music. Apple Music with Apple News+ is a bundle that might make me hesitate on YouTube premium, but that has the music AND ad-free YouTube, so there's never a reason to get Apple music. Ever.

News+ shouldn’t be losing that much money. They’re just posting other people’s content and splitting any ad revenue.

It’s probably a rounding error off what TV+ loses every year.

I’m over a decade of using Reeder, and probably another decade beyond that using RSS in general. But yeah, dwindling time (getting older + kid) and web enshitification means I basically just page through the article titles these days and rarely read the stories.

Apple News is extremely targeted at Not Me; there’s a whole nav button dedicated to sports and no way to remove it or even change the topic. I can block certain outlets but… they still show up? The app’s fundamental philosophy is incomprehensible to me.

The weirdest thing I found with Apple News+ was all the articles about female teachers having sex with their students. And before anyone says, “HA, his algorithm”, it turns out it was 100% the Fox News feed. Once I blocked Fox, I stopped getting my weekly Boomer fantasy notifications.

I haven't looked at Apple News in a while, does it still try to force feed specific publications? Because that's what got me to delete it. Magazines are boomer poo poo so stop acting like it's a thing.

The local news was pretty bad too if you aren't in one of the cities they curate for.

The whole thing just felt way too opinionated, pushing that weird "the world with blinders on" thing that Apple does.
