I went looking through my prisoners to see if there were any amusing age/sentence/family discrepancies (like this one from an older version, where a guy apparently was in jail since he was -6 years old) and found this:

I bought this game couple of days ago and have clocked in 25 hours. I can safely say that I haven't played anything this addictive that isn't a Paradox game. I haven't done anything but design prisons, watch things go to poo poo, sell it, design new one, find new ways that things can go to poo poo, sell it...85 prisoners is currently the largest prison I have.

Now I realized that there are mods. A lot of mods. :stare:

And that this is not apparently nowhere close to being finished :psyduck: which is weird because in all honestly I haven't ran into that many bugs.

I love how the prisoners in this game get a personality. This guy murdered one guy already and would have probably killed this one too if I hadn't heard the commotion and found him from the yet-unfinished cell space. He's risen from a normal security prisoner to one of my worst people and at the moment he won't get out until he's uhh...60 :stare:

About six deaths so far. My prison is pretty efficient but these guys exploit every unfinished construction, dark hallway or unmonitored space (showers, etc.) to kill people. Also the normal/minimum security prisoners keep having periodic canteen wars. The arms trade thrives obviously and pretty much three of my max security prisoners were normal/min ones who attacked a guard with a knife. How do you stop it? I have metal detectors everywhere, do I just need to make searches every night?

EDIT: Crap, I realized why the numbers of normal sec keep growing: after each canteen war some min secs are "promoted". That's an terrifying initiation rite...

Not just nightly searches, but nightly searches that don't use the Shakedown tool. Go block by block and use the Search Cell Block option on the character or item property sheet.

Do a search on all incoming prisoners. And use dogs. Lots of dogs.

Don't forget to set areas that are under construction to "Staff Only".

I was just thinking, could you save space by having one cell open into another, into another and so on so you don't need a hallway in between the cellblocks? Or is that just asking for trouble.

Yes, I think so. No, not if you make the interior cells a different security level that's on lockdown when the outer ones open and before they close. At least that would minimize the danger I think. At any rate this gives me an idea to toy around with, so thanks.

I've had at least two teachers get killed before I finally relented and put guards in the classrooms instead of just cameras with a guard in the hallway. If anything, staff who are not guards are even more at risk of being murdered since they don't have stab vests and can't fight back. Incidentally I have no idea why anybody would want to teach at my prison with that record. I'd say there must be some sweet rear end pay incentives but I assume PA is set in America where private prisons are a thing and sufficient budgets are not.

Are they connected in the right direction? The order you click on objects when connecting them matters. I'm not sure if CCTV cameras need to go camera->monitors or monitors->camera, but whatever you have now, try the opposite and see if it works.

Is anyone suffering graphical glitches? Cause I sure am! I'm running windows 8 just in the likely case that it's the culprit. Otherwise I'm just having minor graphical glitches like the 'Z's from sleeping prisoners turning into flashy squares, as well as a chunk of my yard being a flashy square. It's mostly minor graphical glitches and whatnot and nothing big.

EDIT: How many cooks do I put per prison ratio? I don't think I am giving enough meals to feed all my prisoners. I have two sinks, ovens, fridges, and cooks. On that matter how many meals per day should I give and at what times?

What are good patrols for my guard dogs to go on? I've got one patrolling the cell block hall and one patrolling outside around the cell block.

What's a good regime? I honestly have no clue and would love some help concerning this.

Number of cooks isn't as important as number of cookers, especially if you have prison labour. Expand your kitchen.

Having a guard dog patrolling the entrance to your prison will be good for spotting contraband.

The default regime is a pretty good start. Slot in a four-hour Work slot in place of some free time once you need work to happen.

Is there any way to isolate the prisoner in a room with a power generator and a shower? You can turn on the water and the generator to produce a makeshift electrocution execution setup.

So my dog gives a pile of clothes or a washing machine a very brief little dog icon. What can I do with this? How do I act on this? Or is this a simple blip saying 'I searched here'? And if some worker is carrying in a toilet or box of pipes or some poo poo and the metal detector goes off how do I get them to stop so I can search it? Once the item is installed the magnifying glass icon disappears.

It's just showing the dog is searching it for contraband. If they find anything they'll let you know.

Ok I have some questions. How do I act on a tunnel my dog found? I very briefly caught a glimpse of my drug dog giving me a shovel icon and a very brief blip of a disappearing flag. How exactly do I go about doing this?

My first prison is going surprisingly well, but I'm having a HUGE contraband problem. People tossing poo poo over the walls seems to be the main method of smuggling. Narcotics and tools mostly with a lesser degree on weapons and luxury items. I have metal detectors at vital checkpoints like cell block entrances, the prison entrance itself, visitor center and if I ever put prison labor in the kitchen, the kitchen.

If you're sure there's a tunnel nearby you have to deconstruct the toilets of nearby cells or quickly search the suspected cells at nightime before the tunnel diggers can get back to their beds. Dogs often throw up false flags though so it's best to have a sniff around an area for a second one before you start wrecking poo poo.

hailthefish
Oct 24, 2010

It might be a false alarm. If there's a real tunnel there you'd typically expect to find more hits in that area.

Just in case: while the prisoners are sleeping, click one, then click 'search cell block', do this for all suspect cell blocks. Don't do a shakedown for tunnel-finding. If there's prisoners in the middle of building a tunnel when their cell is searched, they'll be discovered out of their cell. If you call a shakedown, they'll hear the shakedown alarm and come running back.

If you're still paranoid about tunnels, remove the toilets in the suspect cells and then rebuild them.

For just plain contraband sweeping, do a shakedown while the prisoners sleep. Try to make as much of the edges of your prison inaccessible as possible, and add lots of metal detectors and dogs at likely areas. I like to have metal detectors at the doors to sensitive areas as well as sort of scattered around at chokepoints, with dogs at chokepoints, around the perimeter, near the infirmary, and near visitation.

The less money you have, the more you have to rely on finding things with shakedowns and the less you can afford to improve security to keep things out, or at least catch them immediately as they enter.

nielsm
Jun 1, 2009

I usually have dogs patrolling in the yard and in the visitation room, that finds most of the smelly contraband early.

Avoiding contraband thrown over the walls is easy, simply don't let prisoners near the outer walls. Easy to do by having buildings surrounding the entire area.

Dogs usually dig like 3-5 times in the same place if they have really found a tunnel. A lone flag is almost always false alarm.

Its a square grid so no curved walls but you place the foundation, walls, etc in whatever shapes you want.

Everything is based on a square grid, but you can make irregular-shaped rooms and "diagonal" corridors if you want. It's just easier to build in rectangular shapes, especially since most objects take up multiple tiles and would be hard to place in irregular-shaped rooms.
