Did some digging into that side of the family's background. Uncle Jay ended up retiring as a Col in the Airforce. During the latter half of WW2 he was a Major assigned to the 404th FG flying P-47s. I'm not sure when he flew the P-39 but it looks like he had an interesting career.

Okay, I think I have my head around the logistics of coop campaigns in PWCG and I'm reasonably sure the networking is squared away. Running nmap from an off-network box shows that port 28000 is open when I've got the coop server running and closed when it's not, so I'm pretty sure that's all set. I'll probably hop on discord at some point this weekend to see if I can grab someone and help me test it just to be sure.

As far as PWCG, I think I understand how that's working. It's actually a little more flexible than I thought. I was thinking any coop players would have to be in the same squadron, flying the same airframe and mission type, but that's not the case. Players can be assigned to different squadrons, different airframes, and different missions. Meaning that if you wanted to fly a fighter, you can. Your mission may be patrolling, or it may be your job to escort other human players in bombers/attack aircraft. Or, if you want to fly a bomber, you can. Neat. Also, any aircraft assigned to coop pilots, but not occupied by a human at mission start will default to AI control. Not sure what happens if you drop connection in the middle of the mission, but at least an entire flight won't sit there and idle on the runway because the leader's slot was assigned to a human player that didn't show up for the flight.

I'm guessing missions will take ~60 minutes from takeoff to (presumably successful) landing. That seems to be the norm for PWCG missions - at least in my offline Moscow campaign.

I think what would make my life a little easier as the admin for this would be to build a player roster into PWCG. To that end, if you think you want to fly, please fill out this spreadsheet. One limitation to note is that the in-game name must be letters and spaces only. This is the string displayed above your aircraft in-flight and PWCG won't accept all special characters or numbers in that field. You don't have to be present for every mission (or any mission for that matter) in order to sign up. It will just be easier for me to have a pre-built list of users at go-time than to scramble around trying to add them all in as everyone's waiting for the mission to start.

These are the difficulty settings I tend to run at:

I can give or take Instrument Panel, but the others I'd like to keep, I suppose. If there's outrage one way or the other, I can probably be persuaded. Since we'll all be flying on the same team, against AI, things like icons and external views won't give anyone an unfair advantage.

For those of you thinking that these look intimidating, I'd be happy to host some coop training flights and teach anyone the basics of engine management, takeoff, landings, and things like that. I'm not the best teacher for dogfighting tactics, but I have several hundred hours in real aircraft and countless hours in flight sims going back to the 90s. If there's interest in that, I'm thinking we could set it up for Wednesday or Thursday evenings. It's important to understand that all skill levels are welcome and encouraged to join! This is supposed to be fun, not intimidating or scary.

Tentative Timeline:
- Please sign up on the spreadsheet by Saturday, May 2nd
- I'll get a dedicated LP thread around for updates, and highlights of the inevitable shenanigans by week of May 4
- Our first test mission will be run on Sunday, May 3rd at 9pm EDT (UTC -4)
- Our first real campaign mission will run Saturday, May 9th at 9pm EDT (UTC -4)

Just a reminder that tonight is the first test flight. 9pm EDT, so about 3hrs from now. Primary goals are to stress test my machine and inet connection to see how they handle serving the mission, and to see how PWCG handles reading the log file after we're done. If you haven't signed up at the link above yet, please do so within the next couple hours. It'll just save us all some idle time of me trying to add you to the MP roster in PWCG while everyone is waiting. I'll post the server up notice here and at discord.

Okay, I've added everyone to the coop roster in PWCG. For tonight's mission, this is where you're assigned. According to the signup sheet, most preferred Russian aircraft in 1941. So, looks like our campaign will be The Great Patriotic War beginning with the defense of Moscow in October, 1941. If you didn't specify a role (attack/bomber/fighter), I added you to an Il-2 group in order to fill that out. If you specified fighter, I filled out a P-40 outfit. Below is the roster as it stands now. If you want a transfer to a different airframe, it's easy to do and I can make it happen as long as I haven't generated the mission yet. The screenshot shows all available airframes and bases for Russian aircraft in this campaign. The color code indicates the distance (and commensurate flight time) from the primary front lines. So, if you want a different aircraft, try to pick a unit with a green tag unless you feel like flying for 2-3x longer than everyone else.

Updated roster for tonight. Again, if you want a different airframe going forward, just say so.

The three- or four-digit code is just the map grid.

Turns out, it'll be both. We had some issues last night with only six of us online, so I'm going to try to fiddle with the settings in PWCG and reboot my router before we give it a go tonight. Basically, the problem was that PWCG in its default configuration puts so many AI aircraft in the air at once, the game went into slo-mo to keep up. Googling tells me it's the "tick delay," and not necessarily straight up network lag. Here's a thread on it: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/41948-how-to-reduce-the-tick-delay%EF%BC%9F/

Well, tonight's run went a bit better from a technical standpoint. No slo-mo this time. Popete and I ran a ground attack mission on German armor while Urcinius provided high cover. I managed to remember to turn on track recording at a couple good points, so I was able to grab some screenshots. Some highlights...

I poke my head out of the cockpit to wave to Popete.

Popete ruins a StuG's day.

But not before it can rip off a 75mm round towards our comrades. (Note the round in flight)

StuG FIN

I rolled in behind him and targeted the Pzkfw 38(t) next to the StuG.

At this point, the bomb had just buried itself in the ground a few feet in front of the tank.

He too gets a shot off before his ultimate demise.

But, his time soon comes.

With no immediate aerial threats and plenty of high cover, we set about strafing everything in feldgrau.

I found a trio of 10.5cm LeFH 18's in a field giving our guys a bad time...

...but not for too long.

Urcinius joins the action in his LaGG.

On landing approach, Popete and I were surprised to find a 109 lurking in the area. I was winchester after all the strafing runs, so I just landed while he and an AI LaGG-3 engaged. Popete got a few hits.

The AI LaGG works to gain position...

...when the inevitable happens.

In the end, I think there's potential here. The tweak I made to the campaign generator seem to have helped eliminate the tick delay issue. I've got a couple questions out to Pat Wilson as there are a few oddities with the coop campaign generator that I'd like some clarity on before we move too far. That said, I'll still look to hold another mission next Sunday, May 9th at 9pm EDT as previously planned. If you want to fly a specific airframe, please pipe up. I screwed up someone because I dumped him into an airplane he wasn't familiar with and it kinda ruined his flight. Sorry about that. We're working out the kinks and I think this has the potential to be a lot of fun.

On my side I had zero technical issues, everything ran smoothly. It was also my first time seeing the PWCG and it's impressive, the battlefield feels much more alive than the stock campaigns. Looking forward to the next session, hope we can get some of the new IL-2 flyers in as well.

Also that was my first full flight in the P-40 as I'd bought it only 10 minutes before the mission. It's a fun plane, seems pretty easy to fly if a bit sluggish. I was not doing so well when I got into that low speed turn fight with the BF-109 that jumped us near base. Luckily I put a few holes in it before we got into a turn fight so it wasn't able to get on my 6 and as I pulled out of the turn fight because I was close to stalling he collided with an AI and they both went down.

Yeah that was me, sorry if I sounded a bit grumpy I know there's only so many air-frames to go around. I didn't realize Urcinius was missing/having discord issues and I'd never even sat in a LAGG cockpit or flown something without an auto-rich mixture setting before so when I loaded in and the whole AI flight just took off and I was still trying to work out in a language I don't speak where my gauges were and what controls my plane had I was getting a little frustrated.

When I crashed after takeoff trying to quickly alt-tab to start joy-to-key so my controls worked properly and realized there was no way to get back into the mission until it was over I just kinda hit my limit.

The issue with tank sims is we've not really had a decent one at a reasonable price point that's gotten decent adoption, so there's never really been any kind of mass behind tank sims. Hopefully in this post World of Tanks/War Thunder world there'll be a boom once Tank Crew is done?

I find the systems of modern tanks to still be interesting enough in the same vein as the older stuff, but modern aircraft I just think of as playing X-Plane or FSX, except occasionally firing missiles and running away from things at mach speed.

Yeah, the downside to coop missions - in so far as I can tell - is that you pretty much have to be there at mission start, ready to go. Else, you don't get in. I don't see much of a way to join after the mission slots have been allocated. Jumping on a public dogfight server would be easier on schedules for sure. In the end, I'll give this a few more weeks to see how things play out. If there's interest, great. If not, nothing lost in giving it a go.

The next morning, the game crashed selecting the career profile, and again inside the profile after hitting "proceed". Tried the unchecking again, no luck. All righty, so to bring everyone up to speed, the tick delay issue came up again pretty quickly last night. We had ~10 players and probably the same number of friendly AI aircraft. There was a brief pause (I see this with PWCG missions in single player too) where I think the game is starting to render enemy AI aircraft, though none were visible while cycling through with ctrl+F2. I've confirmed that it wasn't my machine as subsequent testing has revealed no hardware (cpu/mem/network) bottlenecks, so my belief is that the engine itself is the limiting factor. Googling and forum posts seem to bear that out. Even after setting the mission density levels in PWCG to very low, cracking open last night's mission in the mission editor reveals this:

loving

There is a precisely zero percent chance that I'm going to edit these generated missions. So, in short, I think the online, cooperative dynamic campaign is a bit of a bust. I propose plan B: regular flight nights on a goon-run server, or just joining a pubbie server and flying together with voice comms. I may still do an LP thread adding in goons to an offline PWCG campaign instead of trying to do it all online.
