RN version, if it didn't suffer from typical VN pacing issues, I'd totally recommend to pretty much anyone. Like for instance the whole Sakura backstory loses its weirdness, somehow becoming more impacting in the process in spite of H-replacement scenes being absolutely hilarious (the first one especially is a riot, the second most "wat?" scene in the VN after Issei's stripsearch).

What are the replacement scenes in Heaven's Feel? I only know about the ones in Fate and UBW. And Heaven's Feel's H-scenes actually have some sort of warped purpose to them, character-wise (if I remember correctly).

Well, they did make sense and I wish they'd just cut to black or something, but basically she sucks Shirou's blood now. And the first scene (Shirou's wet dream), I don't know, I can't properly describe it, it needs to be seen.

Yeah but it fully explains why she is so screwed up. Also the scene where Shinji tries to rape her "again" and then ends up dead is one of my favorite scenes since I highly dislike that slimy bastard.

Actually, in RN version he beats her up. You probably played some kind of hybrid patch or something if attempted rape was left in.

While Fate isn't exactly great, it's still pretty enjoyable urban fantasy pulp even without taking into account what it's setting up. I was surprised how actually compelling it was (I was influenced by the usual drivel about Shirou's misogyny, wordiness, etc., etc.) when I read it about half a year ago (took me a couple of weeks).

I loved how in HF, when Tohsaka asked him if he can do something she can't, Shirou's first thought was about cooking.

I thought Sakura' s arc was pretty decent, all things considered. Maybe, it wasn't as compelling as some other stuff in HF, but she wasn't just a plot device to further develop Shirou and Rin as some people seem to think. Also, red interludes in HF are awesome and her VA did an amazing job in them (not sure if it's relevant, just throwing it out there).

Saber Alter. Not sure why, but I find her to be one of the coolest characters ever. Design, voice acting, theme music, everything is just perfect.

Considering Zero showed her being wormraped at 7 or whatever, I don't see them sticking with the non-sexualized version of Sakura's story for the anime.

The difference between original and RN Matou magic is that worms don't have the courtesy of giving female hosts orgasms, that's about it. Sakura's still tortured and experimented on for 11 years. (And battered by her stepbrother for 3 years).

The whole vampire thing was indeed stupid, though.

Never change, Nasu. Never change.

The second movie would suuuuuuck, though. Unless it's literally mapo tofu scene stretched to an hour and a half.

I'd say Paradox Spiral is second best after baseball arc from DDD (Sinker vs. Slugger) which in my opinion is the best thing Nasu has written, dark urban fantasy at its finest, but if you can't read Japanese, Chinese or Russian, you're SOL, and it's probably never going to be animated :( Not to mention that you have to get through rather tedious previous arcs to fully appreciate it.

Did anyone ever translate DDD past the first part, or is that dead? I read the first few chapters on my own since I own the books, but it is stressing my jp pretty hard.

There was Russian to English translation effort on Beast's Lair which is pretty terrible and at best might serve as sort of a reference for you reading the original, but beyond that, nada. Thing is, DDD has nothing (so far anyway) to do with so called "Nasuverse" and that, I imagine, puts it pretty low on the list for potential translators. Shame, really.

Nah, it's not VN bad, it's Faust-style LN bad, i.e. pretty demanding (what's with achronological order and other narrative tricks), bleak, humorless and not terribly compelling. The first chapter (JtE) is translated and pretty representative of the first volume.

The problem is that if the story focused on Waver, he'd be either dead or screwed beyond recovery. As it is, he gets his neat little arc, and that's pretty much perfect.

I thought so, too, until I read Sinker vs. Slugger from DDD2. It's ironic that it's translated to Russian (and Chinese) before English. Dude really went full Dost in that one. Not that I compare him to Dostoevsky, of course, but, while it's pitch black, it's not Urobuchi brand of grimdarkness either. There's no rape involved for one. The first volume of DDD, while not as good, features grown up, jaded version of Tohsaka, it's great. Mahoyo, from what's available of it, is cute lighthearted shounen fun for all family. (Which, in my opinion, Tohsaka's route in FSN should have been, but that's neither here nor there).

The problem with Nasu is that people tend to judge the guy based on his 10+ years old output, and milking the Fate franchise to the last drop and then some isn't helping. The truth is, FSN just wasn't all the great, and in my totally scientific approximation 70% of its success can be attributed to Takeuchi, a perv struggling with human anatomy, who just happens to be a genius character designer.

I get it, but he says it like 20 times to Saber. Like, maybe Shirou is actually way ahead of his time when it comes to gender politics, but he really doubles down on that poo poo even while all other prohibitive elements of his relationship with Saber get analyzed and resolved. Unless you really think that all people who exhibit bias do so extremely consistently and within the confines of rational expression, I'd think you'd have to acknowledge that this dude really couldn't let go of the fact that Saber is a girl and that is a reason he can't have her fight, even after he otherwise accepts the necessity of the Servant's role in their partnership.

There are several dimensions to this dumb "But you're a girl!" thing. First, it's kind of a meta-joke, because initially Saber wasn't supposed to be a girl at all. Second, Shirou's attitudes are supposed to be that of an old-fashioned Japanese gossiping housewife or something, for comedic effect. It didn't work too well, in my opinion. Third, and most important of all, the statement "You can't fight because you're a girl" is incomplete, to begin with. If we actually take Shirou's feelings for Saber, the difference of his attitude towards other female characters (already pointed out in this thread) and his survivor guilt into account, it would sound more like "You can't fight <in my stead>, because you're a girl <I love>."

To be fair, Nasu had been a subject of ridicule for his prose in Japan up until Hollow Atraxia / DDD. And you can probably make out the difference even with fan translations.

Ridicule in what aspect exactly?

Basically, for his purple prose, pretentiousness, unnatural dialog, etc. F/HA and DDD improved on all these aspects.

Someone with decent knowledge of Japanese and familiarity with eroge circles can correct me if I'm wrong, since it is a second-hand information.

But even in my subjective experience, trying to re-read F/SN after F/HA was... rough. DDD is weird, because the first volume is basically self-indulgent wankery employing various story-telling techniques and narrative tricks which made translation inherently awkward. Like, it feels like the dude enjoyed writing it and didn't give a slightest of fucks whether anyone else would actually read it (other then Takeuchi, of course). I think, there was a narration in there with multiple layers of unreliability or something like that. I don't remember much of it, to be honest. The second volume is rock solid, however, and I wish ufotable animated Sinker vs. Slugger arc, it's by far the best thing Nasu has written, and it's very cinematic for the lack of a better word, but that'll probably never happen.

If you want to read Nasu, Decoration Disorder Disconnection is your best bet. It's head and shoulders above what he he has written before and he promised to write the next volume after he's done with Tsukihime remake.
