I believe I saw a mention that they were going to be expanding on a character who didn't get a lot of time in the original UBW route in episode 4, I guess that was Ilya, since she had the new original scene.

My guess is that beside from simply wanting to add more stuff for her since she doesn't have a lot of time in this route, there's also them wanting to piggyback off of Prilya, as well as provide a certain amount of continuation from Zero, since she's one of the few links to it.

Maybe you are on hard difficulty, or something? I had no trouble at all. The trick is to get one of the Real-type characters (the girl OC is a good example) with that skill that boosts aim/evade, and the skill that boosts damage built up as high as possible. Then just walk her forwards. Because she has the lowest HP, the AI will target her - even though they have a 0% chance to hit. Then she'll just counterattack and oneshot everything.

Its been a while since I played it, but I remember this being one of the funner tactics to use. (Tohno) Shiki and the real type MC were both good at it, and Bazette was basically built straight up for it from the start with Fragarach. A high movement group of reals moving ahead to wipe everything out with counters followed by a square of long range characters (Akiha, Rin, Archer, and Sakura, I think?) cleaning up with support attacks was how I usually played it.

I personally really liked Battle Moon Wars. For all the dumb original characters and badly hashed plot points, there were others that worked pretty good, and the combat was good enough that it was the first SRW game that got me to stick around for multiple playthroughs.

If I had one big bone to pick with it, it would probably be that most of the enemies never seem to bother to actually move forward towards you, instead just hanging back at their starting locations. It made the difficulty feel neutered, made the skill points harder to get (and a couple stages were really hard), and generally made the game feel slower.

Some highlights:

-The aforementioned Rider spending all day watching Legend of Galactic Heroes and Tweeting about it.
-Mordred buying an ero-doujin of her father and freaking out. Also getting a wooden sword as a souvenir for Lancelot along with a note that "It can't shoot beams"
-Spartacus working as an Idol scout and constantly getting arrested.
-With Shirou out, Saber making a bowl of Yakisoba with Spam and Mayonnaise for lunch.
-Shirou and Kotomine are Phoenix Wright and Edgeworth for some reason.
-Tohsaka getting arrested for tax evasion

And a bunch of other stuff.

Clear missions of collecting certain amounts of items or killing certain types of enemies to get rewards and unlock new missions. Get limited edition CEs to increase the appearance rate of necessary enemies and drops. Clear all missions, get Ryougi Shiki, 4 star assassin.

Total of 10 new limited CE's, I think? Looks like by leveling some to max you can further increase enemy spawn rates.

Ryougi Shiki, 4 star assassin
Max ATK 8867 HP 11055
Didn't realize it, but it seems she herself became an urban legend.

I think she may need special event drops for her ascensions?

Also available separately from the event gacha:

Chance of instant death. (increases with charge)

General theory I've seen is that it'll be an alternate timeline EMIYA that fully embraced Kiritsugu's methods in addition to his ideals (and possibly receiving more actual training than Shirou did). The crazier guess is some version of Kiritsugu himself. Either way, if they have knowledge of the end of the fourth war, it would 100% explain them going after Irisviel. They know how dangerous the grail is and that it must be destroyed, no matter the cost.

Orrrr...it could just be same character summoned as a different class, like with Cu Lancer and Cu Caster.

Either way, the matchups here, with EMIYA in the 4th war, Iskander and Darius fighting, Old Waver and Kayneth, and Mashu/Lancelot are all stuff that fill me with fanboy glee. I'm just disappointed this is a temporary event for a cell phone game and not a longer, fuller scenario.

What bothered me more was the stuff with Saber. It felt like they were trying to set up multiple inner-conflicts with the character that never went anywhere and then F/Z ends. The whole drinking party between kings leads to nothing for her. Saber serves more as a centerpiece for philosophical debate between Gil and Iskander, but she has no story arc for herself. At best, a very disjointed one.

Really? I always thought Saber's development was one of the stronger points of Zero, especially considering the limitations of having to relatively match what we knew from Stay Night and Hollow Ataraxia.

By the time of FSN, Saber is basically a depressed mess. Her country has fallen apart and many of her knights have betrayed her. Zero is the answer to the question of why she doesn't want to use the grail to fix everything, but rather to run away, to turn back the clock and make it so that she never became king. It's pretty a pretty bit of intense self loathing that she believes that her doing anything else to try and save her country would be hopeless. She's essentially broken.

Zero posits that she wasn't broken at Camlann, that she was still the embodiment of her ideals, still working to save Britain, but that it was the events of Zero that broke her.

And if anything, her meeting with Iskander and his challenge to her notion of a king, his rejection of her ideal, that really sealed the deal. Much of what she went through- Caster's macabre deeds and Kiritsugu's trampling over the very idea of chivalry, for instance- is repugnant to her, but what really shakes her to the core is the self doubt planted in her by the meeting of Kings, which come to fruition in her battle with Lancelot.

She thought she was doing everything she could to save her country, and that Iskander was a conquering tyrant who didn't care that his empire didn't last beyond his death. And yet Iskander held such sway over his men that they followed him even in death, while Saber's trusted knights were proven to hate her so much that they were driven to madness.

IIRC Fate Zero has even been described by Urobuchi and Nasu as just being 200 pages of Saber bullying, which is absolutely true, but I think it still adds another layer of development to her character and nicely sets up where she was mentally at the start of FSN.

Hommando posted:

I don't think any of them hated her. Lancelot was driven to madness because when he was confronted about his betrayal, Saber just kind of shrugged it off and refused to admonish him.

Yeah, none of them did. With Apocrypha and FGO we now know that even Mordred was just a huge Tsundere who wanted to be acknowledged.

But Saber didn't know that. She basically cheered on Lancelot and Guinevere, figuring she couldn't exactly be a good husband. We the reader were treated to a passage on how that clashed with Lancelot's chivalry and he wanted to be punished for his betrayal, but Saber didn't. She just knew that one of her knights showed up in the Holy Grail war completely insane and who went out of his way to try and kill her every time they met.

Trihugger posted:

Maybe I misunderstood her character starting point. I admit that I didn't watch the first 3 or 4 episodes of Fate/Zero. I actually walked in on my sister watching it midway through the first season and just hung around and watched the rest of it with her. I thought Saber started out wanting to kill herself so to me, it felt like her arc never went anywhere. If her initial wish in F/Z was to save Britain rather than erase her reign than it's not as meandering as I thought.

It's been a little while since I last watched or read F/Z but it's at the start of the King's Banquet when they're debating what they would do with the grail. IIRC Saber says that she would use it to go back and live her life again to do things right and save her country, contrasting with Rider, who's proud of his life, even if he died young and his empire collapsed, and finds the idea of redoing it insulting.

This sounds similar but is different to her wish in FSN, where she wants to go back and live her life again and not pull the sword from the stone, believing that she was such a huge fuckup that someone else would be better for her country than she would, even if she had the assistance of the grail. At the start of Zero she's still living towards her ideal, trying to be a good king by self sacrificing for the nation, being a good chivalrous knight. By the end her ideals have all been dragged through the mud and she despairs and decides that it would be best if she had never become king in the first place.

I was very lukewarm on FGO for a long while. Orleans and Rome just didn't click for me at all.

What eventually got me properly interested in it was the Fate/Zero event. Going back in time with adult Waver to fix all the problems in the fourth war was almost everything I could have asked for. I do kinda wish they'd brought another servant that would have some interesting reactions, but I guess they wanted to keep in focused on Waver and the new servants.

Now that I'm finally getting around to play through the second half of the story it's actually pretty good! Almost like a real Type-moon VN, only where you get interrupted by werewolves or something every five minutes.

Going all in on Fate for the past 10 years (and in a way that has never matched the quality of the story beats and character arcs in the original VN) has been a bit disappointing.

I feel the same way. They kinda sat on one cash cow as soon as they found it, and it's only getting worse with FGO.

I also kind of hate the direction they've started to take where every property is supposed to be in a different parallel world. So Stay Night is supposed to be in a different world from Extra, which is a different world from FGO, which is a different world from Prisma, which is a different world from Apocrypha, etc.

Like, I get that parallel worlds are canon with Zelretch and all, but it seems like lazy writing doing that instead of fitting everything into one shared universe that can more directly reference itself. It seems like they're only doing it so they can ignore the technobabble they've written before and write new contradictory stuff. It doesn't really make it that much more accessible for new fans, and it would be more interesting to older fans to have more open references instead of everything being an all new elseworld.

A lot of that is basic surface level stuff but it still did a lot to flesh out a visual novel with a pretty barebones presentation.

Also, a friend of mine said he would've gone for Jason, since presumably his Noble Phantasm would be the Fate equivalent of Knights of the Round - just summon all the Argonauts to show up and beat the poo poo out of whoever you're fighting. :v:

Most servants don't really get a choice. Arturia in FSN was kind of an oddball in that she was specifically under contract with the world to seek the grail. There are plenty of servants who have little to no interest in the grail itself.

There are numerous things that can qualify someone from becoming a servant under normal conditions: anti-heroes weren't normally supposed to be summonable, divine spirits aren't summonable without some sort of trick, and there are a few figures who can't be summoned because they live immortally in some sort of sealed dimension. If they never die, they never go to the throne of heroes.

However, all of these restrictions get flaunted pretty much constantly. Fuyuki had anti-heroes because of Angra Mainyu, and by Extra Nasu seemed to just forget. Divine Spirits get summoned in FGO by tricks like Artemis latching on to Orion's summoning, or Ishtar becoming a Pseudo-servant, and there are plenty of Demigods like Herc and Gil who don't count. And still-living servants like Scathach and Merlin either die or make themselves summonable somehow for FGO.
