Other being good at crawl things: Spoil the hell out of yourself unless you really care. Always fight in 1-tile hallways if you can help it except for special cases like slimes. Train fighting You don't have to fight everything! Learn to use travel exclusions (shift-X, move to square, x) to ignore nasty uniques until you can beat em.

Crawl noob tips: if you are confused, drink a potion of curing, which will cure your confusion. Of course, you cannot drink while berserk, so be careful of berserking around enemies that can confuse (like tarantellas).

For reference 3 base armour is the same as the difference between wearing leather and scale - i.e. huge.

Yred actually works surprisingly well for VM. I can cast Venom Bolt through my allies and Iron Shot makes it really easy to use Enslave Soul because it kills everything in a few turns. I got a manual of long blade in Orc and decided to do that for melee, bought an elec long sword (poo poo base damage but it has elec + a bunch of resists), found Ring of Shaolin, enslaved Rupert, working on Haste, basically I just have to not gently caress up now and I'm golden.
