Wait wait wait. So it's not just that Ross/DPR/Mark tried to have some murdered by hitman, but that the hitman and the victim (or someone posing as the victim) were both actually federal agents, one (or both?) of whom were stealing bitcoins on the side for their own profit?

I don't think the hookup happened, fed #2 just replied "yeah I totally know a guy, I'll call in a favor" and then helped fed #1 pretend to have been rubbed out by a hitman who never existed at all

hobbesmaster posted:i think its that a fed stole the stuff, DPR asked another admin who was a fed about killing someone who hooked him up with a third fed? Kinda, an admin was flipped and the fed started using his account to drain the vendor accounts at SR. DPR contacted a high level, tough guy vendor, who was also a fed to have the admin killed and was paid. Both feds worked together with the real admin to stage his death. Feds got paid and real admin was sent to jail.

this is described as "murder for hire #1" in this article http://www.businessinsider.com/silk-road-boss-ordered-6-assassinations-and-owned-20-million-in-bitcoins-feds-claim-2013-11 the next section under "murder for hire #2" is also quite amusing, the dialogue with "redandwhite", which you can read in the original DPR filing, reads like a cheesy 419-style scam dont have the link for the specific section of the filing but here's an analysis of the name choice https://cryptostorm.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3816#p5049

like if the trial goes forward and DPR is acquitted because the jury thinks "uh well the cops were actually criminals or something so I don't know if I can believe a single word said in this courtroom" after which the USA becomes a laughing stock for not being able to convict the guy with a diary detailing his crimes

I said this in the grey thread but I wasn't sure then, I'm pretty fuckin' sure now No wonder Ross' defense team was have conniption fits trying to get the agents who investigated him onto the stand, they were blackmailing him, stealing bitcoins, extorting people, and pretending to kill each other they probably could have gotten an acquittal out of this ridiculous bullshit

CapnAndy posted:I said this in the grey thread but I wasn't sure then, I'm pretty fuckin' sure now The defense could have called the agents, but they were trying to get certain testimony in under cross examination. The judge ruled that the defense line of questioning was beyond the scope of direct, but they could have called them as part of their case if they wanted. There are many reasons they did not want to do this though.
