yep, i just checked. their faq is ambivalent, as it says they accept bitcoin at the rates from bitpay's website.

so i set up a burner spam4.me email to see what their checkout screen looks like, and yep, they have bitpay handle the poop for them.

so, to "shop at walmart with bitcoin", you send bitcoins to bitpay, who then pays gyft for a giftcard, which you can then use at walmart (which they sometimes don't take)

the best case scenario is like a money laundering wet dream of misdirection

Anyone else receive laughs when asking cashiers if they accept Bitcoin? (self.Bitcoin)

A new small restaurant opened up in my small city. This restaurant is incredibly successful (due to word of mouth) and it's very hip, with mid-20s employees and owners. They also use an iPad app as their register. Upon seeing this, I was excited. I asked if I could pay in Bitcoin especially considering everything they needed was already on their counter. But they caught me off guard, because after asking, they (2 register girls, 2 cooks/potential owners) burst out laughing and one cook started ridiculing Bitcoin out loud for about 10 minutes in a tight space with about 25 customers in earshot. Scam, not safe, dangerous, the usual mainstream opinion but amplified by the guy that considered himself a tech-nerd (his words). I wasn't going to turn it into an argument so I paid with debit and waited for my food.

I encounter nothing but very annoying experiences when asking businesses about Bitcoin payment methods. For anyone else trying to pay with Bitcoin, are you being welcomed with similar nonsense?

It’s finally here!

If you are an MIT undergraduate, please sign up to participate in the MIT Bitcoin Project study by completing the initial survey at https://bitcoinproject.mit.edu/.

In order to participate and receive your $100 of bitcoin, you must complete the survey before Sunday, November 2nd at 11:59pm.

MIT undergraduates: email bitcoinhelp@mit.edu if you have any problems or questions. This and bitcoinp@mit.edu will be the ONLY addresses used for official communications related to the MIT Bitcoin Project.

The MIT Bitcoin Club is excited to receive our bitcoin through the MIT Bitcoin Project and we strongly encourage all MIT undergrads to do so too. As noted in the initial announcement last spring, this study will “help MIT continue its long tradition as the preeminent educational institution at the forefront of emerging technologies, and establish MIT as a global hub where Bitcoin-related research, ideas, and ventures are studied, discussed, and developed.”

Please join us in participating!

to summarize, the bitcoin MIT project, that promised to give every MIT student $100 in bitcoin at the start of the semester (August), will be giving out bitcoin in November.

oh, also you have 5 days to respond or you won't get anything

edit - for an extra laff, click on the link to the survey
