ok 2 things

First, ...! posted a really long comment thread, but it's SO, SO GOOD

quote:

I am a student at MIT who recently received $100 in Bitcoin. AMA (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 5 hours ago by hyped_llama

I am participating in the MIT Bitcoin Project. Before coming to MIT this fall, I heard about the Bitcoin project and was instantly excited, after following the currency for a few months.

quote:

[–]bittrivia 20 points 5 hours ago

How many people do you think claimed the $100?

quote:

[–]riceinthedicemofo 2 points 50 minutes ago

Surely MOST PEOPLe would claim any kind of free cash? Especially students?

quote:

[–]hyped_llama[S] 17 points 4 hours ago

The vast majority of people are selling it and sadly my friends didnt participate, despite my urging.

quote:

[–]hyped_llama[S] 21 points 4 hours ago

Sadly, the unbelievers were left behind. The project is no longer still accepting signups. A lot of the sceptism came from people's parents, as people under 18 needed their parents' signatures to participate.

quote:

[–]daftspunky 14 points 3 hours ago

I really like this feedback, it shows promise. Almost every paradigm shift starts out discouraged by scared parents.

quote:

[–]fuyuasha 8 points 3 hours ago

You just can give away money sometimes huh.

This is especially and unfortunately cogent since one could reasonably expect parents of soon to be MIT students to be reasonably well informed or at least as open to new/interesting (esp technical) ideas well beyond the general population.

What on earth did they think the down side was esp since it was done under the auspices of MIT itself?

quote:

[–]hyped_llama[S] 13 points 2 hours ago

I can only tell you what I've heard. But one of my friend's mother said that she didn't understand the point of bitcoin and that unless her daughter wrote her a report showing the benefits and safety of bitcoin, she wouldn't sign the permission form. My friend simply didn't have the time to convince her mom.

quote:

[–]slothslurp 3 points 2 hours ago

I don't understand this kind of response. Even if your friend's mother didn't understand the point what possible risk was her daughter taking by signing up? Oh well. I'm sure plenty of other kids appreciated the opportunity to sign up

quote:

[–]Here4Downvotes 1 point 47 minutes ago

Most people are financially incompetent so this isn't too surprising to me. The daughter stood to have an infinite ROI on the $100 worth of bitcoin, now she gets nothing.

quote:

[–]bettercoin 2 points 36 minutes ago

Wow. Sounds like MIT is full of losers with busy-body Tiger Moms.

quote:

[–]dendxbptybtc -1 points an hour ago

Just like they do in the porn industry, just wait until they are 18, and hit them up again

quote:

[–]Sharpiedeluxe 9 points 3 hours ago

Not really a question, but quite honestly I am disheartened that a majority are selling their bitcoins for cash.

Are people not even interested enough to try something other than exchanging for another currency? As a software engineer, I can think of a hundred or so different projects using Bitcoin.

quote:

[–]hyped_llama[S] 16 points 4 hours ago

A lot of people are selling it to people who can exchange the bitcoin for cash. One of the guys in my dorm has gained 2 bitcoins from buying it off people.

quote:

[–]Sugar_Daddy_Peter 6 points 3 hours ago

Paging /u/coinapult

I hope your bitcoin drop in Dominica goes better. At least the citizens there won't have to sign paperwork in order to accept free money.

quote:

[–]hyped_llama[S] 25 points 4 hours ago

Most people don't have any idea what Bitcoin is. I've actually heard people talking about not signing up for the project because they thought it was a scam.

quote:

[–]Always_Question 5 points 4 hours ago

This is perplexing given MIT's reputation as a mecca for out-of-the-box technologists. Tip for trying to dispel the lack of understanding 1000 bits /u/changetip

quote:

[–]Cryptolution 2 points an hour ago

Why did you ignore his request for providing proof? The fact that you answered and avoided that question to me immediately puts any validity immediately into question.

Please provide proof or delete this thread. No one wants to hear from a shill or liar.

quote:

[–]joe-murray 2 points 2 hours ago

Free money is a scam? Lol...

quote:

[–]futilerebel 0 points an hour ago

I will never understand how anyone can think free money is a scam! This is no-strings-attached, right??

quote:

[–]CryptoDonDraper 1 point 5 hours ago

Do as Satoshi suggested and never delete your wallet, young one.

Kidding... 'grats on getting one of the MIT airdrops! Every university should get a similar program going.

quote:

[–]ctfn00b 0 points 3 hours ago*

Anecdotal as it may be it appears pretty solid evidence against the naysayers that believe everyone has heard of Bitcoin and its use will only decline.

Its pretty clear that even in a key demographic the awareness is surprisingly low.

/u/changetip 3 internets private

quote:

[–]jflowers 0 points an hour ago

Reading these - I cannot help but to see how those student immediately selling their btc will immensely regret that choice later in life.

It would be interesting if we could have had someone set up a booth in the quad, dressed as the devil - with a sign saying something to the effect of, "sell your bitcoins here".

With each purchase, perhaps have a devilish laugh played, followed by - "you'll regret this later..."

Hell, make it so that the first X are paid 100 bucks (1:1), with the next Y paid some amount lesser, and so on - perhaps with an ever increase in the volume of the laughter.

Record this "experiment" and show it for bitcoin on the intertubes (so as to keep this project funded and able to continue at other campuses/years...)

If nothing else, it may make some really think about what they are doing with their bitcoin - if not this go around, then for the next batch of students (and I'm sure others will give out btc in the future.)

So, do you think that something like this would have made those selling, pause for a moment?

quote:

[–]Vibr8gKiwi 2 points 2 hours ago

So then who are these students that don't participate? Rich kids who don't care about $100?

quote:

[–]OBAMA_IN_MY_ANUS 3 points 6 hours ago

I'm calling it now... There will soon be a couple of stories posted that'll begin with something like:

"I'm currently a student at MIT and when I was given $100 in a strange type of currency known as "bitcoin", I was very sceptical to say the least.

However, the more I read up on bitcoins, the more I realized it is the real deal and the currency of the future!

Bitcoin has made a believer out of this MIT student!"

I get certain TYPES being unconstitutional (or at least debatable), and I get them think it's immoral (even if that's stupid), but how do you argue that the constitution doesn't support taxes?
