Welcome to the Team Fortress 2 thread!

TF2 is a team-oriented, class-based FPS with a strong focus on working together to complete simple territorial objectives. Players pick one of nine classes and work with their team to secure capture points, push giant bomb carts or steal intelligence briefcases from the enemy team. It’s totally free to play forever, no-strings-attached, with every gameplay changing item being easily acquired without you needing to spend a penny.

There is no stat-levelling in TF2 so you can switch freely between the nine classes mid-game, depending on what your team needs and what you enjoy.

The Classes
Scout
+++ Pros: Has the fastest running speed, can double-jump, captures points twice as fast as other classes, deals very high burst damage at close range and can pick and choose his fights better than any other class.
--- Cons: Tied lowest health class and lacks area denial weaponry.
Soldier
+++ Pros: Fires powerful rockets that do lots of damage at close to mid range, has the second-highest max health of all the classes, able to perform rocket jumps to reach high or distant places on-demand.
--- Cons: Has the second-slowest move speed of all the classes and has a relatively small ammo pool.
Pyro
+++ Pros: Has a fair amount of health, does not need to reload his/her primary weapon, can deal lots of damage at close range to multiple enemies, is able to extinguish burning teammates, reflect enemy projectiles and control enemy movement with airblasts.
--- Cons: Limited damage outside of close range.
Demoman
+++ Pros: Has a fair amount of health, can deal absurd amounts of damage with pipe bombs or stickybombs, able to bounce explosives off or over walls and around corners, can plant remote explosive traps that stick to walls and doorframes, able to perform stickybomb jumps to reach high or distant places on-demand.
--- Cons: Limited close-range offensive capability, stickybomb jumps cause a lot of self damage.
Heavy
+++ Pros: Has the most health of any class, deals lots of damage at close and mid range, does not need to reload his primary weapon.
--- Cons: Slow, limited mobility.
Engineer
+++ Pros: Able to build teleporters to move his team to a fight quickly, dispensers to keep them healed and supplied at the front line and sentry guns to keep the enemy out of certain areas.
--- Cons: Needs to maintain buildings or they’ll be destroyed.
Medic
+++ Pros: Heals other teammates, has regenerating health, is the second-fastest of all classes, can deploy “Übercharges” which make their patients and themselves invincible, deal 100% crit damage or heal at a super-fast rate for several seconds.
--- Cons: Limited offensive weaponry.
Sniper
+++ Pros: Can one-hit kill from a distance with a headshot, is able to pick off key players from the enemy line relatively unnoticed.
--- Cons: Limited close range damage options, slow damage output if not consistently hitting headshots.
Spy
+++ Pros: Has a number of gadgets that let him disguise as enemy players, turn invisible for a short time and disable engineer buildings, deals powerful bullet damage with his revolver, can one-hit kill up close with a successful backstab.
--- Cons: Limited offensive capability once discovered behind enemy lines.

If you’re new to the game and you want to learn the ropes, the Soldier is a very forgiving class to learn and try the game out with, and you'll get a good feel for how the flow of combat works. It’s good to play all the classes and learn how they all work so you’re better able to fight against them as whichever class you’d like to play.

The Items
Every class starts with a base loadout filled with stock weapons, which are usually the most versatile loadouts in the game. New weapons will drop for you at random intervals and are balanced to be sidegrades that open up alternative playstyles, making them situational upgrades/downgrades.

Check out the TF2 Wiki to find out more about each of the weapons in the game. Each weapon's page has an instructional video showing you how it is used.

Items can come in different qualities which change certain things but none of them actively give you an advantage over anyone else. These qualities are:
• Unique (Yellow) - The standard quality for non-stock items.
• Strange (Orange) - Items with a counter on them, usually counting kills or points gained while equipped. Found in crates.
• Genuine (Dark Green) - Same as Unique but with a different colour name. Usually given as promotional items when buying other games on Steam.
• Vintage (Blue) - Same as Unique but with a different colour name. Items that existed from before the Mann-conomy Update in 2010 were changed to Vintage quality.
• Unusual (Purple) - Unusual cosmetics have a randomly assigned particle effect that makes them stand out more. Found in crates as a very rare drop and very valuable. An unusual hat sold for around $4,000 once!
• Haunted (Cyan) - Same as Unique but with a different colour name. Only Halloween items can be found in Haunted quality.
• Collector's (Red) - Same as Unique but with a different colour name. Made with a special Chemistry Set item and 200 Unique versions of an item.
• Self-Made/Community (Light Green) - Similar to Unusual but with a Community Sparkle particle effect only. Weapons and cosmetics can have this quality. Given to item developers and valuable community contributors by Valve.
• Valve (Magenta) - Okay these are usually straight upgrades because Valve employees cheat at this video game

You can also get Killstreak Kits that can be applied to any of your weapons from MvM missions and certain crates. These come in three flavours:
• Standard - Displays total killstreak on your HUD, weapon killstreak in the killfeed and announces 5 kill milestones to everyone in the server.
• Specialized - Same as Standard but adds a coloured sheen to your weapon.
• Professional - Same as Specialized but adds a particle effect to your eyes. Effect gets more intense after 10 kills.

The Servers
While official Valve servers will never have forced MOTD ads or dumb donator privileges, they run limited, official map only mapcycles and are often filled with people of massively varied skill levels from all over the world. If you ever get tired of trying to drag the six laggy newbie spies on your team to victory against the pubstomping demoman-medic combo on the other team, consider checking out these goon-recommended community servers!
If you have any recommendations to add to the list, post in the thread and they'll get added below.

North American servers:

quote:

Brave New World - agoat.tragicservers.com - Server hosted by forums user Agoat. Nocrit, nospread, rotation is filled with a bunch of good stock and custom maps.

FITH - 216.52.148.223:27015 - Nocrits, rotation, currently has fast respawn on. Map list is stock plus UGC plus a modest selection of other custom maps (including Pro maps). Generally start. ~8pm EST. Runs in-house HL pugs.

(-TN-) - 68.68.32.218:27015 - Crits, rotation, all custom including a few Pro versions of stock maps. Always up, but donators ($5/mo) kick non-donators if the server is full, which makes it difficult to get/stay on as free especially at peak times. Most of the donators are a pretty tough crowd so I think of it as paying for practice. They also have a set of 24/7 ($MAP) servers and some others that tend to be less full.

Cafe of Broken Dreams - cafeofbrokendreams.com:27015 - Similar settings to the above, but based in Texas and with pregame mayhem (friendly fire on) enabled while waiting for players. Replays on. Not too active now, but used to have a lot of good players who still come around from time to time. I think they used to field a Highlander team.

The Crit Sandvich Chicago Slaybox - 69.175.33.150:27015 - is pretty good too, it's my go-to when the above aren't populated (which is most of the time)

Taunt Gamers - generally pretty laid back with a good range of experience. No ads, you can donate $2/mo for stuff like end of round and autobalance immunity. Some quake soundpack is enabled by default but you can thankfully turn it off:

Badwater/Goldrush - 50.31.21.203:27015
2Fort - 50.31.21.203:27014
Dustbowl - 50.31.21.203:27016
Pipeline - 50.31.21.203:27013
'Fuckaround maps' - 50.31.21.203:27012

STARZ - 70.42.74.33:27015 - no crit/spread, normal + actually fun custom maps, plus you can both nominate & rtv. East coast but v stable ping for west coast scrubs, good players, pretty much full all hours of the day.

GameME's Arena Server - 72.5.195.40:27015 - pretty much the only consistently populated Arena server I've found without any bullshit. Full teams, only the odd man out sits out, scrambles after 3. Sometimes has shitheads on it who get mad when you cap, but generally fun.

Nemu's Proving Ground Payload Maps - 67.213.222.178:27015 - all official Payload maps. Almost always full at any hour of the day, no ads and the very fun Grooveshark/Magicsong server mod. Doesn't have any team scramble options, which makes it highly prone to stacks at times, but otherwise a great server I regular a lot. Should note that there's a single bot, Brutus, who is something of a server mascot, but he sits out when the server's full, I think.

The Furry Pound #4 - 192.99.5.53:27015 - Vanilla settings across the board, default respawn time, crits, no alltalk etc. Literally always full, literally. Pretty good player base skill-wise. Recommended to have sprays turned off!

-FAP- Clan Server - 70.42.74.28:27015 - A lot of overlap between this crowd and the CritSandvich gang. East coast vanilla-style server, 24 players.

Lion's Den 2 Electric Boogaloo - games.dongues.net:27015 - West-coast, vanilla-style server, 24 players. Not goon run, but frequented by quite a few goons.

The Randomizer Arena - 216.245.203.66:27015 - A randomizer server where you get a random loadout every life. Central US.

Micsnobs - a really good group of servers to play on, as long as you remember two things: follow the rules(there aren't that many), and respect the Admins, as they won't hesitate to use the various things Admins can do on these servers to you

#1 24/7 Doublecross - 192.187.99.106:27015
#2 24/7 Stock Rotation - 192.187.99.106:27016
#3 Custom Maps - 192.187.99.106:27017
#4 24/7 Carnival of Carnage - 192.187.99.106:27018
#5 Halloween Rotation - 192.187.99.106:27019

2f2f2 - 162.248.92.222:27015 - "THERE WAS A TIME WHEN TF2 MEANT TERRIBLE MAPS TUESDAY, lovely JUKEBOX SONGS, AND SONIC FANFICTION. WE CAN LIVE THOSE DAYS AGAIN."

UK/European servers:

quote:

Hampshire Heavies - Pretty decent UK-based servers and they have some very good players if you fancy a challenge.

#1 Vanilla|NoCrits + Classic2008 Vote - 178.32.51.115:27015
#2 Vanilla - 178.32.51.115:27025
#3 Vanilla|Crits Vote - 178.32.51.115:27035
#4 ~ Freak Fortress 2+ (New Exclusive Bosses) - 178.32.51.115:27045

German Headquarter - One of the only good server chains left in Europe that have replay enabled.

#1 - Valve Maps - 193.192.59.128:27815
#2 - Payload Only - 193.192.59.128:27915
#3 - Dustbowl Only - 193.192.59.128:28015
#4 - CP Maps Only - 193.192.59.128:28115
#5 - Gold/Barn/Bad/Dust - 193.192.59.128:37015
#6 - KOTH + SD Maps Only - 193.192.59.128:28215
#7 - Randomizer + RTD - 193.192.59.114:26115

Skial Badwater - 94.23.226.200:2010 - Nearly full 24/7, with a more skilled player base than the average server.

Don Pascualino's - fps10.mtxserv.fr:27030 - If you're French/European and looking for a nice server with no random crits, no ads, and sometimes really good players, give it a try.

UKCS servers - the Vanilla servers are the best (Vanilla meaning standard respawn and map rotations), also last spot on the server is always reserved for donators;

#1 - Mega Game Server - 78.129.244.230:27015 (Note: Instant Respawn)
#2 - Mega Game Server - 78.129.244.230:27030 (Note: Instant Respawn)
#3 - Dustbowl Extreme! #1 - 78.129.244.231:27015
#4 - Vanilla Server! - 78.129.244.232:27015

#6 - 2Fort Extreme! - 83.142.230.55:27030
#7 - Vanilla Server #2! - 78.129.244.236:27015
#8 - Payload Extreme! - 78.129.244.236:27030

The Fellowship Randomizer - 84.200.37.93:27015 - A randomizer server where you get a random loadout every life.

Asia & Oceania servers:

quote:

Orange Server 00 - 157.7.138.97:27016 - Stock server, no spread, random crits, 24 player limit. The players are really nice and pretty good. No class limits, but you'll rarely see more than one heavy or spy or two engies/snipers. Fills up most evenings and weekends.

PuniPuni na Are Server 1 - 202.213.210.22:27015 - Mix of stock and custom maps with votemap. 28 player limit, so it's more about fun-having but not as chaotic as a 32-player server. Almost always occupied.

PuniPuni na Are Server 2 - 202.213.210.22:27016 - Same as the above, but no custom maps.

Payload Inc. #1 - 125.63.48.140:27015 - Same as previous.

Orcon Games | TF2 #2 | Payload - 219.88.241.90:27200 - Decent New Zealand payload server.

Competitive Play
Click here for a video that breaks down how competitive TF2 is played.

While most people play on public servers, there's a small, active competitive TF2 community. This is mostly broken down into:
• 6v6 - Teams generally consist of 2 scouts, 2 soldiers, 1 demoman and 1 medic, with scouts and soldiers switching to other classes when needed. Played on CP and KOTH maps.
• Highlander - 9v9, class limit of 1 so every class is always being played. Played on Payload, CP and KOTH maps.
• 4v4 - A recent addition, class limit of 1 with heavy & medic disallowed at the same time.
• Ultiduo - 2v2, soldier & medic only. Played on small KOTH-style maps.

If you want to get involved, here are some recommended sites to check out.
TF2Center - A worldwide lobby site where you can play one-off competitive games without a pre-organised team. Easiest way to get a taste of how competitive TF2 works.
TeamFortressTV - The international competitive community forums. Has lots of information about all competitive TF2 as well as news on upcoming events.
UGC League - NA, SA, EU, AUS/NZ and Asia - Free to play league that hosts 6v6, Highlander and 4v4. One of the best leagues for starting out in competitive TF2.
ETF2L - EU only - European free to play league that hosts 6v6 and Highlander. Also excellent for starting out in the lower divisions while also hosting the best of Europe in the top divisions.
OzFortress - AUS/NZ only - Australian free to play league that hosts 6v6 and Highlander. Similar to ETF2L in skill divisions.
ESEA - NA only - North American pay to play league that hosts 6v6. Have the only significant cash prizes in competitive TF2 but is only for highly skilled gamers.

Items and Trading
Goon trading thread - All posts about trading things should go here.
TF2Outpost - The biggest trading site at the moment. Be wary for people trying to scam you by offering super low prices on your items as this is prevalent here.
Bazaar.tf - Similar to TF2Outpost but with a smaller user base.
TF2TP - An item trading site run by Luigi Thirty. Not as popular in the trading scene as the above two sites any more and lacking in a few features but may be updated in the future.
Dispenser.tf - A trading site that uses bots so that trades can take place even while one user is offline.
Scrap.tf - 1:1 trading with bots. If you're missing a weapon or hat and have a spare, this site makes it really easy to fill the holes in your collection. Now includes 1:1 MvM robot part trading and trading strange items.
Scrapbank.me - Same concept as Scrap.tf but not as popular. Definitely worth a look if Scrap.tf's wait times are high.
Backpack.tf - Lets you find out the value of TF2 items. Take all prices (especially for unusuals) with a grain of salt as they are community submitted and approved.
Missing.tf - A site that lets you find out which TF2 items you do not own, made by Otacon.
TF2Tags - A useful item nametag preview and voting site by Dr. Dos.
SourceOP - A forum for high end TF2 trading and real money purchases.
SteamRep - A trade scammer database.
If you plan to trade in unusuals and/or real money, PLEASE ASK FOR ADVICE HERE OR IN THE TRADING THREAD, people will try to scam you out of your hats/$$$.

Custom HUDs
While the default HUD is more than serviceable, lots of custom HUDs are available if you would prefer to use them.

huds.tf - A collection of current, up-to-date HUDs.
TFTV Master List - A forum thread with links to a wide variety of HUDs, not guaranteed to be up-to-date. Also includes HUD editing help.
FrankenHUD
yA_HUD
KBNHUD

Demo Recorders
The in-game demo feature allows you to save a replay of your POV from a match. This is first person only and it lasts until a stop console command is sent, instead of being only one life.

P-Rec - Automatic demo recorder.
How to set up P-Rec as an alternative to replays in any server.

Hints, Tips and Console Commands
A lot of options and settings in TF2 are disabled or set to sub-optimal values by default, here are some recommended things to change to improve your gaming experience. Anything with a next to it is a super highly recommended setting.

How to enable the developer console (used for changing settings that aren't present in the options menus)
Make a file called autoexec.cfg and save it in Steam/steamapps/<your name>/Team Fortress 2/cfg. Any console commands that you put in this file will be executed every time you start TF2, ensuring that your settings are not lost.
If you want any of these settings to be class specific, put the command in each of your <class>.cfg files with the value that you desire.

fov_desired 90 - Sets your FOV to the maximum, 90, letting you see as much as possible. Default is 75.

• viewmodel_fov ## - Effectively changes how much room your weapon takes up on your screen. Changing it to 0 or 180 makes the viewmodel disappear, default is 54, change it to whatever you like best.

• tf_dingalingaling 1 - Plays a sound when you hit someone and do damage, even if you don't see anyone get hurt. Default is 0.

• tf_dingaling_pitchmaxdmg 5 - Changes the pitch of the hit sound for maximum damage. Default is 100 so 5 would make the sound low pitch on high damage.

• tf_dingaling_pitchmindmg 150 - Changes the pitch of the hit sound for minimum damage. Default is 100 so 150 would make the sound high pitch on low damage.

hud_combattext 1 - Shows the amount of damage done to an enemy on hit. Default is 0.

• sensitivity ## - Changes your in-game sensitivity. This is complete personal preference but it's recommended to be able to turn at least 180° in-game without needing to pick up your mouse. Use this to help calculate your "real sensitivity".

• cl_autoreload 1 - Turns autoreloading on. In TF2, you're able to fire your weapon while reloading so there's not much reason to leave this off. Default is 0.

• bindtoggle <YOUR KEY HERE> "r_drawviewmodel" - Toggles viewmodels on and off when you press a key.

• zoom_sensitivity_ratio ## - Controls how your mouse sensitivity changes when scoped in as a Sniper. Can be set to decimal values (0.5, 0.9, etc). Default is 1.

Performance Configs - if you're running TF2 on a toaster

quote:

Try using one of these to up your average Frames Per Second in-game:

Chris's Max FPS Configs - The standard FPS configs that most people use. Not updated any more so not necessarily the fastest but still highly recommended. Can use this to make it easy
Comanglia's FPS Config - Regularly updated FPS config. Some compatibility problems may occur but can give better performance than the above.
Rhapsody's FPS Config - Alternative to Comanglia's, not updated as often.

Engineer Fast-Building Scripts - You can pick one, two or all of them.
code:
bind <YOUR KEY HERE> "destroy 2; build 2" // Sentry
bind <YOUR KEY HERE> "destroy 0; build 0" // Dispenser
bind <YOUR KEY HERE> "destroy 1; build 1" // Teleporter Entrance
bind <YOUR KEY HERE> "destroy 3; build 3" // Teleporter Exit
Medic Team Radar - Hold a key down to temporarily raise your autocall threshold to 150% so you can see where all of your teammates are.
code:
alias "autocall_default" "hud_medicautocallersthreshold "75""
alias "autocall_all" "hud_medicautocallersthreshold "150""
alias "+radar" "autocall_all"
alias "-radar" "autocall_default"
bind <YOUR KEY HERE> "+radar"
Null-Cancelling Movement Script - Prevents you from stopping cold in your tracks when you hit two opposing direction keys at once.
code:
// TF2 Null-cancelling movement script
bind w +mfwd
bind s +mback
bind a +mleft
bind d +mright
alias +mfwd "-back;+forward;alias checkfwd +forward"
alias +mback "-forward;+back;alias checkback +back"
alias +mleft "-moveright;+moveleft;alias checkleft +moveleft"
alias +mright "-moveleft;+moveright;alias checkright +moveright"
alias -mfwd "-forward;checkback;alias checkfwd none"
alias -mback "-back;checkfwd;alias checkback none"
alias -mleft "-moveleft;checkright;alias checkleft none"
alias -mright "-moveright;checkleft;alias checkright none"
alias checkfwd none
alias checkback none
alias checkleft none
alias checkright none
alias none ""
Network Settings - Better network settings than the default. Use one of these to improve hit registration. Good connection block is optimal but can cause laggy in-game models if your connection is bad. Use either the good connection block or the bad connection block, not both.
code:
// Good connection
cl_cmdrate 66
cl_interp 0
cl_interp_ratio 1
cl_lagcompensation 1
cl_pred_optimize 2
cl_smooth 0
cl_smoothtime 0.01

cl_interp_ratio 2
cl_lagcompensation 1
cl_pred_optimize 2
cl_smooth 0
cl_smoothtime 0.01
cl_updaterate 40
rate 35000
Voice Commands - Type "bind <YOUR KEY HERE> <ALIAS NAME>" to assign a voice command to a key.
code:
// Voice commands
alias v_medic "voicemenu 0 0"
alias v_thanks "voicemenu 0 1"
alias v_gogogo "voicemenu 0 2"
alias v_moveup "voicemenu 0 3"

If you want to bind these to your keyboard's Numpad, the names of those keys are as follows.
code:
bind KP_INS // 0

The Shitterbinds
Okay listen up for a second: the automated, randomized text bind is an ancient and noble tradition in the world of Team Fortress gaming and entertainment. However, like all good things, it is abused and ruined by people who have less sense than creativity. Below, for sake of posterity, you'll find the binds in question.

Please make your binds clever and inspirational.

TF2maps has a lot of good resources even if it is pretty dead by now. Here's an outdated, but still very helpful, premade gallery of skybox/lighting effects so you can just dump them into your map and get the same lighting as on official maps. This is a list of decompiled Valve maps to poke around in, but do keep in mind that decompiling causes several optimization objects and other level elements to be removed, meaning recompiling one of these isn't going to turn out very well. Also, if you DO end up just making koth_watchtower or koth_offblast or something, DON'T POST ABOUT IT ON TF2MAPS. They hate revised maps.

Most importantly, :siren:you seriously should not bother with TF2 mapping without the Ultimate Resource Pack,:siren: which saves you a lot of headaches and confusion with Hammer.

TF2maps recently added a "map graveyard" where they toss their old map files up for download that they don't plan on finishing, for others to pick up and use. The quality and completion level of these can vary wildly, but I recommend poking through some of those too because looking at decompiled Valve maps can be very, very intimidating. It'll give you a good idea of what a map should look like early on.

Lastly, and probably the thing I should've linked first, this guide from Valve's developer wiki on mapping. It's from the game's launch in 2007, and thus it's fairly dated, but it's what I used to learn how to do maps and you may or may not find it easier to digest than some of the guides on TF2maps. If you have any questions, you can ask on the TF2maps forums, and while I might not be able to field mapping questions very well I'd be happy to try (and I'm sure a bunch of other guys around here would be, too).

Network Graphs - What they are and how to use them.

Hats Wouldnt Fly posted:

This is a network graph:

Specifically, this is net_graph 4. It provides a lot of information, and using it you can quickly determine whether your problems are on your end or the server's.

FPS and ping are self explanatory. The in and out numbers are just bandwidth usage and safely ignored.

In the upper graph itself, the spikes are communication between yourself and the server. Of particular note, the lower bits of green are other players, and the red is hats. None of this matters. What's important is the gaps in it. The even spaces near the left side are choke. For whatever reason I do not have enough frames to display all of the incoming data. Farther to the right, the large uneven gaps are packet loss. These occur because I live in the middle of nowhere.

My lerp is orange. This can be bad. Orange lerp means if I lose packets or have a framerate dip my game will stutter. The blue and red bars at the very bottom edge show how smoothly the game is running. Blue going down is good. Orange going up means my client is lacking sufficient information and just guessing where everything is. You can see these coinciding with packet loss and choke. These moments of gameplay were a stutterly, laggy mess.

If your game is running badly and you notice a lot of packet loss, something is probably wrong with your internet. Make sure there aren't any torrents running on your network or whatever. If you only notice it on one server, though, it may be on their end. If nothing else is using your bandwidth and it happens on multiple servers a call to your ISP may be in order. If you have a lot of choke, your net settings probably need adjusting. Keep in mind bursts of choke are normal at the beginning of new rounds.

Now, if this is all in order, you should check the SV at the very bottom. This is the framerate of the server you are currently on. If you see this changing a lot, or dipping into low numbers, leave.

There are also four numbers to the right. The top and bottom (both 67/s) are my requested cmdrate and updaterate. The numbers between them are what I'm actually getting. If these numbers are not very close together, something is wrong. Usually, that something is the server you're playing on having a lovely internet connection. Find a new one.
