Chapter Six: Haywood's March To The Gulf (Late February - March 1937) With the fall of Atlanta, the American Union State was finished. The task of the Syndicate Guards at this point was to convince the Union State Armed Forces of this fact. The first important task was to secure Atlanta by recapturing Gadsden.  The battle would be far less hard fought than the first battle of Gadsden. The Union State was evicted quickly by one hundred thousand men attacking from north and east.  With victory over the Union State so close, the Benjamin Franklin Corps moved south to prevent a large scale retreat to Florida.  The Benjamin Franklin Corps could not move quickly enough to cut off the retreating defenders of Charleston.   Marshall left the city of Charleston itself alone, assigning the task of occupying one of the Union State's remaining ports to militias riding the rails south from an engagement with federal loyalists in West Virginia.  With the Union State in full retreat, the Guards began to prepare for the next stage of the civil war. The Syndicate Guards were tantalizingly close to MacArthur's headquarters in Denver. The junta in Mexico was was growing closer and closer to Denver and Reed was insistent that the Syndicate Guards make it to Denver first.  Denver was guarded by professional infantry and it would be difficult to capture the city from Lincoln alone. Therefore the focus was on securing Kansas City and the areas to the west of it.  Another mission was to secure Tulsa to establish a defensive line across the Arkansas River that could hold against federal counterattack until major forces could be redeployed from the South. It would also have the effect of cutting off the thin connection between the federal presence in Louisiana and Arkansas from their headquarters in Colorado.  Haywood's march south through Mississippi created its own federal pocket in Birmingham. In the past the strategy had been to allow the federal and Union State forces to fight each other as much as possible. This strategy changed with the demise of the Union State.  The Abraham Lincoln Corps went on a detour from its march to the Gulf of Mexico in order to force the surrender of the isolated Texas National Guard.  While the Abraham Lincoln Corps and the forces in the Midwest started to shift focus to preparations for the final attack on Denver, the TAEF and BFC were tasked with delivering the killing blow to the Union State. The Union State was preparing to defend its major cities to the last man and the Syndicate Guards aimed to prevent bloody drawn out battles while the federal threat still loomed. With the capture of New Orleans by federal troops, the important city of Lafayette was isolated and likely to fall next. Haywood's Abraham Lincoln Corps was in position to capture Mobile. The TAEF and BFC sought to do everything they could to prevent a general retreat to Florida. Miami would need to be captured, as it was already being used by the Union State elite to begin moving their families and important assets out of the country.  The Benjamin Franklin Corps attacked Tallahassee from the northeast, attempting to cut off the Florida retreat option. The TAEF engaged the last remaining major concentration of Union State troops in Montgomery while the Abraham Lincoln Corps evicted the defenders of Mobile, all of this pointing to Pensacola as the final meeting point of the two great advances that had played out over the last four months.  The Union State made a last ditch attempt to move through an Alabama gap between the Abraham Lincoln Corps and TAEF, hoping to threaten to recapture Atlanta.  The plan to allow the federals to 'handle' the Union State in Louisiana hit a snag when the Union State began an unexpected counterattack, succeeding in retaking most of the state. The Abraham Lincoln Corps marched across the Gulf Coast to take New Orleans for the CSA.  The fighting along the Gulf Coast had been some of the most vicious and consistent. Federal and Union State forces had taken Mobile from each other numerous times, and by the time the Abraham Lincoln Corps arrived, the city was in ruins.  Marshall's planned capture of Tallahassee had to be aborted when Union State troops began advancing towards Augusta through Macon. The BFC flanked the advance from the east, in order to buy enough time for the TAEF to capture Montgomery and assault the main Union State position in Pensacola.  Before Pensacola could fall, the TAEF had to protect the Abraham Lincoln Corps from being cut off. Haywood's bold march to the Gulf had left him with a long thin supply line stretching from Memphis to Mobile, one that Union STate forces from Tuscaloosa were attempting to cut.  Charleston fell to the Empire State Corps without any more fighting. The Corps immediately moved to redeploy towards the south in order to prepare for an offensive into Florida.  The TAEF succeeded in protecting Haywood's supply lines but could not prevent forces from escaping to the north.  The Union State troops were cut off and starving but they could still capture Nashville or Atlanta and prolong the southern war unnecessarily.  The Abraham Lincoln Corps captured the ruined New Orleans and immediately moved to destroy the isolated Union State men in the wetlands of Louisiana.  After their surrender, Haywood felt confident that he could leave the elimination of the Union State in Louisiana to the federals.  The Abraham Lincoln Corps abandoned the Gulf Coast after that final victory. Defending New Orleans was of secondary importance to the task of putting an end to the Union State. Other than the starving Alabama pocket, only Florida remained of Long's rebellion. Fierce battle raged in the Panhandle, with Pensacola's exhausted defenders trapped between Rose and the Gulf. It was almost over. Yomiuri Shimbun, March 18th, 1937  I'm disappointed, Japan can really get up to some poo poo in Asia if it wants to. Prime Minister: 'Japan Is Strong Enough On Its Own' In a controversial announcement, the Prime Minister declined to endorse any of the foreign policy initiatives moving through the Diet. He stated that the empire is strong enough on its own to resist German domination and syndicalism in Asia. Expansionism has been a hot topic throughout Japan, as many on the right believe it is necessary to enlarge the empire at the expense of the Qing or Germans in order to preserve the empire. The recent successes of the Combined Syndicates of America in the American Civil War also cause concern. The Diet approved a measure last winter providing funds for any and all Japanese citizens wishing to travel to America and fight on behalf of the Pacific States of America. The hawk faction of the Diet is agitating for this relationship to be expanded to a full alliance as well as a proposal to expand ties with the Entente. "I don't understand why the Prime Minister is so reluctant to bring more of Asia into our system or to re-approach the Entente." said Councilor Taku Okamoto of Nagoya. "The Entente is working full time to combat syndicalism in the Americas and India. If we hope to keep this scourge away from our homeland, we need to do everything we can to help our Entente friends defeat it overseas." The Prime Minister, apparently, does not agree.  The Prime Minister did, however, comment positively on the Treaty of Novosibirsk signed this week. "An independent Siberia prevents Russia from attempting to project its power in Manchuria as they have tried in the past and frees up the White forces to exert more pressure on the Bolsheviks." he commented. "Our northern security has never been better."

The AUS can try to form a temporary alliance with the CSA if they're getting their faces kicked in, but it almost certainly won't happen in this LP (because we're the CSA and thus the ones doing the face kicking) and really makes no sense to me since Long's entire platform is basically 'gently caress Syndicalism'.

Annexing your enemy ends the occupation, but this is not even important. Every time you capture a province, its IC is reduced to 0 and slowly rebuilds. Wait long enough and you can use the occupied province as if it were your own.

Wait long enough and you can use the occupied province as if it were your own. No, occupied provinces and foreign provinces will always have an IC percentage malus compared to national provinces. Only with national provinces do you get to use 100% of the IC. Note the security ministers that give you foreign IC usage bonuses. Like I said earlier, you can cripple the revolters by taking out their core territories, leaving them with only occupied provinces they can't use to their fullest potential, even if they were to wait ten years. Anyway, once the ACW2 is over, the winner gets reintegration events that give them the entirety of the USA as national provinces, and from then the fun begins.

Eventually events fire to restore the provinces that you have claims on, in this case the entire country, to national province status, which gets rid of the non-national penalty. It can sometimes take a while though. One game I was in I was most of the way through the war with the Entente before it finally fired to restore the South's status.

I've captured a fair bit of territory but the IC recovery process takes a decent amount of time (much longer if infrastructure damage is high too) and I'm still dealing with an eighty percent industry malus and some other maluses on manpower and resources I can't remember at the moment on any non-national territory, which at this point includes everything I started with minus Pittsburgh for some reason. In addition to that there is an 'occupied territory maintenance' penalty on my transport capacity. Annexing the Union State will make me the legal owner of all of their national provinces when I annex them, except for ones the United States occupies, then they get those I believe. That removes the transport capacity malus (though the often more serious partisan activity penalty remains) and allows me to deploy new units to those provinces. This game isn't like EU where I'll eventually get national status on an owned province, that only happens through events. Luckily Kaiserreich has events to integrate those territories as fully national provinces when the End of The Civil War event fires, which will happen once I've taken out the USA and AUS. National provinces give everything to me and unless I have high dissent, won't pose any partisan risk.

Andrew Jackson's presidency is when most property requirements on voting were abolished and was also when the average person's participation in politics reached its height. Jackson is mainly remembered for duels, regretting missing his chance to hang John C. Calhoun, and ethnically cleansing the Creek, Cherokee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw today, but in his lifetime he was more known for his strong opposition to central authority and elitism, which renders him difficult to understand in modern terms. His laissez-faire economics and denunciation of special interests would seem to mark him as conservative, but he also genuinely believed in standing up for the little people against the wealthy.

Chapter Seven: The Night They Drove New Dixie Down (March-April 1937) Welcome back to Media Monday on WBJB and WBJB.org. We're continuing my conversation with Peter Franks, the producer behind the celebrated historical drama series Amber Waves, which tells the true stories of three different soldiers fighting on the often under appreciated western front of the Revolution. The new season of Amber Waves can be seen on Channel 14 tonight at 8 PM Eastern or streamed from dcoa.synd starting this Friday. Amber Waves was hailed last year for its portrayals of the Syndicate Guards interacting with civilians in the towns caught in the conflict. I asked Peter what we can expect from the new season.  We did get a lot of positive feedback about the relatively low amount of action in the first season. It was not really a creative decision on my part though, the fact of the history is that there wasn't that much battle going on. It's been my mission to stay true to the source material from the start and injecting battles that didn't really happen would cheapen the narrative. This season takes place after the Treaty of Sacramento. The federal troops are no longer fighting in the Rockies and the Mexican troops are advancing deep into Oklahoma. The Syndicate Guards command was very concerned with keeping territory away from Mexico and so the strategy shifted from a defensive one to an offensive one.  Which of the three protagonists will be featured in tonight's episode? Our first episode will take place in Tulsa, which of course is where John Luther grew up before the infamous anti-black riots of 1921. John Luther will encounter far more danger than he did in Missouri, between the pressures of racing to beat the Mexicans to the city and the psychological effects of revisiting the traumas of his youth in Tulsa.   John Luther's journal has achieved prominence before this series was created as a very descriptive and emotional account of the Battle of Tulsa. How did you approach that material? Honestly, John Luther's journal was the original inspiration for this project. That entry practically adapts itself into a screenplay. As far as the battle aspects go, there was no need to invent any excitement since he describes it all well enough that we didn't have to use our imaginations much in that regard. Where we did take some liberties was in the conversations between John Luther and his comrades about his childhood and loss in Tulsa. The desperate feeling of being cut off in the city that John Luther describes bears remarkable similarity to his musings about the dangers of being a black youth in 1920s Tulsa. The history in the city was extremely important to John Luther's mind set during this episode, and so we did our best to use flashbacks and conversation to foster a sense that John Luther now sees himself as defending his home instead of being an occupier.    Is the one protagonist per episode format remaining for this season? Yes, for all episodes except the finale. Next week's episode will feature Adam and how he deals with having to abandon Lincoln and the local girl he had fallen for while in the city.   (we're gonna need to occupy all of the red provinces in order to annex the USA) The Chicago Proletarian media page said about the new season: 'the brilliantly written angst of revolutionaries won't change the fact that we're going to be seeing a lot more walking across featureless plains'. How do you respond to that criticism? Well, I do appreciate the compliment but I stated from the beginning that historical accuracy was my goal and while I would love to go shoot on location in Yosemite, thats simply not where this all took place. We will end up in some different places like Denver and Cheyenne this season, so hopefully that will be a welcome change of scenery for our viewers.  There are rumors that a fourth protagonist will be added this season. Is that true? It is. We're very excited to add another voice to this story. New militias were raised and deployed to the western front during this time and we found another extraordinarily interesting and well-written revolutionary to document. The viewpoint of the 'new arrival' will stand in contrast to the increasingly hardened veterans we've covered so far. I will not spoil who is portraying our new protagonist though.
