To be fair the mono track is fairly feedbacky formless guitar noise that wouldn't be too out of place on a Jefre Cantu-Ledesma album or something like that.

Keiji Haino does the best guitar noise though:

Noise and ambient should be consolidated into one genre since only 10 people listen to either of them independently

Also they're the same.

How come you don't care about Toupee? Their record is so.. beatiful. But maybe that's why. I guess I love "beautiful" noise. I'm not really familiar with those bands. Point me to their music. I no longer live in Chicago, so I'm out of touch.

You should also check Li Jianhong if you like Haino/Fushitsusha. I can't find any non-live stuff by him on YT, but San Sheng Shi and Classics of the Mountains and Seas are good poo poo. Haino's influence in the Japanese and Chinese noise scene is huge - here's a good list of stuff which sounds similar to his work. (I'd also add Vajra's live album to that list).

I don't know, I don't really listen to any of them outside of a live setting really. Some of them are on bandcamp maybe. Also I definitely do not consider toupee noise since it's basically just rock??

I used to be heavily involved in the breakcore / noise scene in my city but the shark-jumping moment for me was going to a Realicide gig in 2010 and watching the opening 'band' which was three guys; one of them had a portable turntable and was just dragging the stylus back and forth across a bunch of vinyl while the second dude screamed at the audience and the third dude sat in front of them and shoved McDonald's into his mouth and spewed it back onto the ground then after twenty minutes they got into a fist fight and threw their records at the audience hard enough to actually hurt people / shatter the records when they hit the walls and floor.

Then a dude tried to fight me for knocking over his beer and, even though Realicide put on a great show, when I was walking home after the gig I realised maybe the local DIY noise scene wasn't where I wanted to spend the rest of my life.

drat, I'm listening to Pinkream for the first time and I can already tell this is top-quality Merz.

The noise scene around here are all a bunch of nice guys who just like to get hosed up and make a ruckus. Double Muslim, It Is a Code, basically everything Charlie Finch is involved with, and the guys from JC that have been banging on for almost 20 years now (!!!) and still own. Airport or Telephone used to do poo poo hot live shows with just one guitar and four pedals. And when he was in Sound of the Lost they were great noise when they weren't aping Austin stoner psych.

Definitely not noise, but their closest genre is no-wave as far as I can tell. And you hit the "problem" with noise on its head: it's just way more interesting live. At least as far as I'm concerned.

Which City?

Realicide Rocks, for those of you who don't know. The sets with Mavis and Swill rule so loving hard. Also Robert Inhuman just opened a new venue in Cincinnati called Cide Central.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onwQcqsEBgc

I live in Milwaukee - So I am super spoiled when it comes to noise. We also have the raddest DIY venue on the planet.

FYI: That Youtube channel is run by a good friend of mine, and one of the 2 noise based gods of Milwaukee.

Despite the fact that I could probably hit up a noise show weekly, I haven't been to one in like a year or so.

Then again, I'm working on putting together an effects chain/building a circuit, so when I get back to it I'm going to be making it.

Melbourne, Australia :australia:

I got into breakcore from meeting a few people that ran warehouse gigs and shows in art galleries and other small spaces. There was a couple of years around 2010 where internationals like Sick Boy, DJ Donna Summer, Realicide and others from the US and Europe would come and tour down the east coast of Australia as well as there being a pretty robust local scene being propped up by guys like Passenger of poo poo, DJ Rainbow Ejaculation, and Toxic Lipstick as well as more hardcore acts like Bloody Fist / Mark N, Paul Blackout, etc. There were gigs weekly and big warehouse parties monthly but it kind of fell apart as warehouses got closed down and the smaller spaces were gentrified and there's just not enough of an audience to run shows in licensed venues so as the number of gigs diminished (and a lot of the local artists started either evolving out of experimental stuff into more accessible sounds or just stopped producing / performing) I fell out of touch with the scene.

I forget how much Robert and the other Realicide dudes get around.

Realicide as a project is on hiatus, but they've basically reformed under the name Decide Today.

Also they opened up a venue in Cincinnati under the name Cide Central. It's pretty rad. I think they're about to do a European Tour in the next couple of months or so. I talk to Swill and Robert online occasionally, I'll warn you if I see anything about them hitting up your lonely continent.

I honestly am spoiled noise wise here in Milwaukee. One of my best friends books most of the shows around here.

There was a point a few summers ago that I got to see Boy Dirt Car, Bloodyminded, Consumer Electronics (Phillip Best of White-House), Crank Sturgeon, and Thrones within the span of a month.

This is the venue and my buddy.

And here's basically every show he's played/been to since 2008. He documents every show that comes through while he's in town. It's loving mind blowing. I don't think there's a bigger collection of live-local performances aggregated anywhere on the internet. Honestly I don't think he knows how important what he's been doing is. He's got 515 videos of noise/experimental alone.

It's 'Vertical Time', by a guy named John Oswald. From what I can tell, he mostly does collages based on sampled works, but this seems different than what's on the albums I've listened to.

It's particularly the last half of the track that I'm interested in.

This thread seems pretty dead, which is a shame because there's still a lot of good stuff coming out. Pharmakon has two albums out now, and they're both great. Her live shows are kind of hit-or-miss, though; of the three times I saw her, she had really disruptive technical problems twice which effectively torpedoed her performance. The third set was loving rad, though; she ran into the crowd, wrapped her mic cord around some guy's neck, and swung him around into the rest of the folks around him.

80s Merzbow is the shiz, before he went all dull roar noise. The Duo box that came out a couple years ago with Kiyoshi Mizutani is in a similar vein and great (10 cds, all material recorded between 1987-89).
