9. Genderqueer — This is an umbrella term for all nonconforming gender identities. Most of the other identities in this list fall into the genderqueer category.

10. Intersex — This term refers to a person who was born with sexual anatomy, organs, or chromosomes that aren't entirely male or female. Intersex has largely replaced the term "hermaphrodite" for humans.

11. Male to Female/MTF — Someone who is transitioning from male to female, either physically (transsexual) or in terms of gender identity.

12. Neither — You understand this one: "I don't feel like I'm fully male or fully female. 'Nuff said."

13. Non-binary — People who identify as non-binary disregard the idea of a male and female dichotomy, or even a male-to-female continuum with androgyny in the middle. For them, gender is a complex idea that might fit better on a three-dimensional chart, or a multidimensional web.

14. Other — Like "neither," this is pretty self-explanatory. It can cover everything from "I'd prefer not to specify how I don't fit in the gender dichotomy" to "My gender is none of your drat business, Facebook."

15. Pangender — Pangender is similar to androgyny, in that the person identifies as a third gender with some combination of both male and female aspects, but it's a little more fluid. It can also be used as an inclusive term to signify "all genders."

16. Trans/Transgender — Transgender is a broad category that encompasses people who feel their gender is different than their birth sex—sometimes known as gender dysphoria. They may or may not choose to physically transition from their birth sex to their experienced gender.

17. Transsexual — Transsexual refers to transgender people who outwardly identify as their experienced gender rather than their birth sex. Many, but not all, transsexuals are transitioning (or have transitioned) from male to female or female to male through hormone therapy and/or gender reassignment surgery.

18. Two-spirit — This term refers to gender-variant Native Americans. In more than 150 Native American tribes, people with "two spirits"—a term coined in the 1990s to replace the term "berdache"—were part of a widely accepted, often respected, category of gender-ambiguous men and women.

Revolution, Brand's newest book, is ostensibly a manifesto arguing for the peaceful dismantling of capitalism and the establishment of small anarcho-egalitarian communities without centralized power structures. It's been criticized for spelling out possible paths to this utopian end only in the vaguest of terms, and for getting various facts wrong, and for Brand's widely uttered admission that he doesn't vote, and thinks that anyone who does is wasting their time. He also preempts any categorization of himself as a Champagne socialist, referring to his chauffeur-driven Mercedes as "the anesthetic of privilege, the prison of comfort," and acknowledging that "now I am a tourist in poverty."

What hasn't been noted sufficiently about Revolution is that it's unreadable. Brand's narrative voice, insouciant and charmingly offensive in both Booky Wooks and various newspaper columns, is a real gift, and it appears only in glimpses here, being otherwise smothered by an invective of meaningless jargon so pompous and indecipherable that it induces headaches. "My love of God elevates the intention of this book beyond the dry and admirable establishment of collectivized communities," he writes. "I remain uncharmed by the incessant rationalization that requires the spirit's capitulation." In other words, if My Booky Wook was about how Brand found sobriety and fame, and Booky Wook 2 was about how fame helped him find a wife after having lots of fun threesomes with other famous people (he and said wife, pop star Katy Perry, have since divorced), Revolution is about how Brand found a cause after discovering that fame and threesomes aren't as fulfilling as he thought they would be. Which would be admirable, if the book was about anything other than adding another colorful feather to the magnificent plumage of Brand's ego.

Revolution, if nothing else, is a rambling illustration of the grandiosity that fame enables. It meanders in stream-of-consciousness style from statistics about inequality to quotes from Brand's friends to unwieldy analyses of the modern world to stories about the time the author was in the back of a limousine with Tom Cruise. In chapters 18 and 19, Brand introduces first Noam Chomsky, then his friend Daniel, whom Brand quotes at insufferable length while he's tripping on hallucinogens in a wigwam in Utah (Daniel, not Chomsky). He then sets up a chapter about economist du jour Thomas Piketty ("He came round my house the other day), before ignoring Piketty altogether and going back to Daniel, whose vision of the future is the closest Revolution comes to espousing a concrete philosophy:


We can accomplish this Revolution through a collective movement of civil society that supersedes the current structure of nationstate governments and the corporate military-industrial complex. The transition is from a paradigm of competition and domination to one of symbiosis and cooperation, from greed to altruism. It begins with the realization of our shared responsibility for the future of the earth, and our inherent unity with each other and with all of life.


This is by no means the most indecipherable excerpt. Sentences are missing words, relative pronouns don't agree, and there's a disturbing section in which Brand admits that he has prophetic visions of the end of the world where the earth is cracking open and yawning "belligerent fire." In other chapters, he argues that it's time to purchase a "Fisher-Price guillotine" for Prince George, that Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne is worse than a pedophile, and that the real driving force behind ISIS is love. The women who accused Julian Assange of sexually assaulting them are perfunctorily dismissed as cogs in a machine intended to bring the Wikileaks founder down, and although Brand doesn't go as far as calling 9/11 an inside job, he does remark that it looked a lot like a controlled demolition (he also notes casually that JFK was assassinated by the Secret Service).

These people, who had not, until that very moment, put in one bit of effort into organizing this action, who had no idea what the plan was, who had no idea who we were or who the family was, decided that they were going to make this an OWS event.

Conflict erupted when one of the OWS-affiliated protesters came with a giant Communist Party of China flag. This white man decided that he was entitled to represent us, at this protest for an American soldier, with a flag that has been used by this country to vilify the Chinese American community. When people began asking him not to demonstrate that flag because it was not the purpose of the event and we were in no way representing China or political parties, he began screaming at us about how we were ANTI-COMMUNIST and trying to take away his first amendment rights. We told him that Danny Chen was an American soldier and we wanted to respect the family and their wishes, but he continued screaming violent accusations at us at the top of his lungs and disrupting the event, until one of Danny Chen’s family members, on the verge of tears, finally convinced him to leave.

Another white OWS protester began trying to use the human mic to direct the protest, and told me that I shouldn’t be using the blowhorn because the cops were going to take it away. I told her that, no, we had a parade permit and sound permit, which was why the police were there clearing the streets for our march. She looked confused and stopped yelling.

OWS protesters often make it seem like they are the birth of social justice activism, that they are here to teach us how to protest because none of us know what the gently caress we are doing and need their wealth of experience to help us out. I was not at all surprised when that woman so naturally assumed that she, as a white woman, knew better than me – she thought that I had found a blowhorn somewhere and decided to play around with it. It didn’t occur to her that we had been planning this for weeks and thinking critically about every step, that it was led by a civil rights organization that has been at work for decades, that we had applied for 4 different kinds of permits so that our event could safely and effectively achieve its purpose.
