Ads were introduced to the ice and jerseys in European hockey leagues because for a long time there were no media timeouts during periods. The Swedish and Finnish leagues re-introduced the "POWERBREAK!" (television timeout) in 2009/10. But there is only one POWERBREAK! per period, unless this has changed recently as I haven't watched any Swedish hockey on television for a year or so. First of all the NHL should refer to "TV Timeouts" as "POWERBREAKS!" instead because "POWERBREAK" is fun to say. Secondly, if the NHL introduces advertisements to their jerseys, but still takes three POWERBREAKS per period instead of one, that would be more shameful than the European commercial policy IMO.

No of course I don't think the NHL will "give money back" I understand that it's a business and they like money. I'm just saying that it's stupid to mock Europe for jerseys that look like racecars, because they were introduced as a trade-off to avoid advertising breaks. e: And yes I also believe that doing both jersey advertisements and multiple advertising breaks per period is rampant commercialism. But no, I don't really expect that the NHL will tone down one if they introduce the other. runoverbobby fucked around with this message at 20:03 on Nov 7, 2014 |
