Hello and welcome to Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There, Japan's answer to Frank Miller and Tom Clancy's Fusion Dance result, and possibly the most vile comic I've ever read. And continue to read :suicide:

What the gently caress is Gate?

Well if you ask Mangahelpers:

quote:

One day in the 21st century, a gate opened in the middle of the Ginza district of Tokyo. Out of the gate poured soldiers and strange creatures, and they soon made Ginza look like an image of hell. The gate apparently connected Japan to another world, a world with a militant empire and many supernatural creatures. The Japanese Self-Defense Force decided to send a small group, led by a soldier who's also an otaku, into the other world on a reconnaissance mission. They're meant to learn what they can about the empire (and its plans), the world, and the people.

They're hardly in the world yet, though, when they come across a village destroyed by a giant fire-breathing dragon. The only survivor is an unconscious elven girl they find hidden in a well. Now they feel like they must warn the nearby towns about the dragon, and do what they can to help. On the way, they'll meet more magical, female companions, and learn more about this dangerous new world.

That doesn't sound too ba-

...

There's the obligatory implicit Nanking denial too (And so, so much more)! So Gate then. Gate started life as a series of webnovels written by an ex-JSDF grunt for his fellow right-wing loser friends. It then migrated in, to my understanding, this order: Webnovels->Actual Novels->Manga->Light Novels. In English, we are basically just concerned with the manga. The best part? If you believe the moonreaders, every version has actually REDUCED the amount of garbage in this thing per editor request, so what we're getting is what has survived two filtering processes.

It's horrifically violent in ways that disturb me despite having gone through such lovely marches through the roses like Berserk and Parasyte, I have no idea what magazine lets it get away with the absurd levels of :nws: nonsense, it's CONSTANTLY sexist and racist, and literally any time it mentions anything related to domestic Japanese or international politics it gets everything wrong (at one point, the Japanese PM seriously considers to himself that Russia will nuke Japan to protect its national resource market).

So why do you keep reading it then?
Well first of all I read it because the idea of Earth being permanently nailed to a low power fantasy setting fascinates me (not that Gate delivers on any of that potential of course), but beyond that, if you like trainwrecks, I CHALLENGE YOU to find me one more insane than this.

Characters
I'll add these later as soon as I can get half decent portraits, spoilers: you will probably hate nearly all of them and the Fantasy Roman Empire's princess is named Pina Colada.

The context usually makes them worse, I find.

There's only so much I can post. One must enter the fog themselves to uncover the horror and majesty that is Gate: Thus the JSDF Fought There.

The two newest chapters are 40 and 41, with focus on the ongoing subplot that I feel I can describe as... let's say the story Lars von Trier would make about the Viera from FF12. :smith:

This is the reason I'm still reading it. God is it terrible a lot of the time, but once in a while you get poo poo like this:

If only it were like that all the time and not so much furry sexual assault and hosed up nationalist circlejerking going on.

Well I mean, in my ideal world it'd be a political drama, but dragons getting blown up with rocket launchers is inherently cool on its own.

Either way if only it could be... anything other than what it is.

I remember encountering this series when there were maybe like five chapter translated into English and people were still wondering why other nations hadn't gotten involved. I was not expecting it to turn out as bad as it apparently did. I'll have to check it out.

Surprisingly very little. The main normal world antagonists are the opposing Japanese political party who are portrayed as blatantly stupid and determined to harm Japan.

The setting and action sequences are incredible and I wish there were more stories involving modern powers encrouching into uncivilised fantasy worlds. Unfortunately the closest thing I'm aware is Outbreak Company, which is dog poo poo.

The good points of Gate are things that are in very short supply, and I've watched enough USA gently caress Yeah! shows that I can deal with even the Japanese military being presented as virtuous and heroic in the occupation of foreign lands.

Gate's sin is being dull unless someone is shooting, at which point it becomes the best thing on earth. God knows how you can be dull when every other panel is tits but they manage.

Mahouka isn't hateful because of it's creepy sub-plot or right wing ubermensch protagonist. It's hateful because it's boring.

Nah, the chinese in this are villainous because they want something valuable. The chinese in mahouka are innately evil and always want to destroy the pure righteous japanese. This includes japanese citizens of chinese descent, including those from mixed blood families. It also presented starting a violent pogrom on a local chinese district as necessary and even heroic.

Ahaha clearly I didn't watch far enough in for the lunacy to filter through.

Is this race war arc less boring than the dull plodding utterly pointless first arc?

Oh god no. Mahouka never stops being boring as hell. And to get to the race war, you have to go through an even more boring arc about the dullest concept of magic sports imaginable.

My favorite subplot in Gate is how all those nasty civilian politicians are constantly being obstructive in some way, so it's up to the wily and heroic military to subvert and undermine them at every turn. You know, for the good of the people!

It's amazing that for a country like Japan which is constitutionally barred from having a military has so many people obsessed with the idea of Japan's (fictional) military being some awesome unbeatable force that embarrasses the USA/China/Russia at every turn.

Well in reality the "self-defense" force actually IS one of the most well equipped, well trained armed forces in the world (Japan has the 8th highest defense budget), but what military otaku don't understand is that it really is geared, in terms of equipment and training, towards cooperation with other countries for defense. They seem to think that a big military automatically means big force projection, which just isn't the case.

Of course this isn't really relevant in the case of something like Gate which is completely batshit right from the outset (Japan would turn control of a hot potato like this over to the international community in a goddamn heartbeat).

Technically it happens in the first episode! Remember that fleet in the opening that Tatsuya the Dark Saviour nuked with his magic? That was yet another evil Chinese fleet trying to invade poor little Japan.
Not to mention America hates Japan in that series and tries to subvert their activities with spies, and apparently ALL OF EUROPE + RUSSIA have a coalition to support China in their efforts.

But you will never get to this because the series is so. drat. -dull-.

I skipped around a few chapters. It is amazing how such an interesting setting can create such a boring story.

Some things in this manga:
  • lazy otaku is the amazing special forces protagonist
  • the JSDF are noble heroes and every other military is bad
  • sexualized child, but it's ok because she looks 12 but is actually 1000 years old (the gently caress Japan)
  • protagonist gets a harem, includes above child
  • huge tits everywhere, huge tit fantasy girls (dragon girls, medusa, elves, etc)
  • race of huge-tit "warrior" gently caress bunnies (actual bunny eared race of only women)
  • probably a bunch of other crap if I bothered reading more

Most of the Japanese I met are pretty against/shamed about expanding military power, so I can see how a military circle jerk story would need to be toned down in order to appeal to a wider audience, but there is still a lot of jingoist shlock. What the hell was cut out if this?

Is this manga even popular in Japan? I can't find a wikipedia article about it or anything about it's reception.

I have oft wondered what could possibly be cut that this is what is deemed acceptable for marketing purposes, but cannot read Japanese. The webnovels were taken down to prep for the properly published versions, so naturally they are absolutely everywhere you could possibly download from, if one felt inclined to.

Apparently that character is based on an actual diet member who wants to shut down the JSDF entirely because she thinks it's illegal or something.

I think I've read this. Is there a scene where the noble JSDF uses attack helicopters to wipe out a giant fantasy army with no casualties, described in loving detail? Because i pretty much stopped reading after that. It is seriously one of the most boring action sequences I have ever seen, like the author has never even heard of the idea of dramatic tension.

Read the manga last night based on interest in the setting described in this thread. When I say "read" I mean "skimmed over pages that had more than 2 or 3 speech bubbles and was mostly just looking for cool fights". Don't really know who any of the characters are or their motivations but the narration I imagined to go along with the pictures makes this manga pretty awesome.
