[P1]. Intro

Runescape is a long standing MMORPG with a horrible community, repetitive skills, but enough charm and wit with flashes of well thought out content that keeps you coming back for more. The medieval fantasy game you once knew has changed radically with the introduction of Evolution of Combat (EOC), with pubbie rage bringing to its side Legacy Mode, which harkens back to the days of old through its interface and combat system. You can still play the original Runescape 2, now known as Old School Runescape (OSRS) here but almost all goons play the main game, so you won’t get the laid back, super awesome community if you wanna dip into that nostalgia.

The OP will serve to be brief as possible, providing you with just enough to get you into the game, or back in touch if you’ve been away so that you can get to the new life that awaits you in Gilenor. If you like what you see or find the game appeals to you as you try it out, consider subscribing to get the full game unlocked. Membership is ~$7 USD a month at its most expensive, and with the introduction of Bonds, you can even play the game completely free once your cash flow gets into the mils, a fairly easy feat these days.

[P2]. Goonscape

Goonscape
is Something Awful’s Runescape clan, currently run by the chaotic staff wielding fist of Hinze123. We’re real dweebs cool and laid back, and as long as you aren’t some horrible shithead, we welcome you as one of us to poopsock and nerd out about stupid things together. You’ll want to stick with the clan when playing this game cause as mentioned before, the general community is absolutely terrible.

Rafzakael posted:

To join GoonScape, you need to first familiarize yourself with the UI a bit. Assuming your computer isn’t a relic from the ‘90s, these are the steps you’ll need to follow.
First, click on this button . This brings up your ‘Community’ window.

Next, you should see the following window:

Make sure you have the green middle icon highlighted. Viewing this window, click the little icon in the lower left ( ] and type in GoonScape.

You should enter the clan chat channel. From there, just ask in chat to be invited to the clan; we’ll get you situated!

Most of the time, we do our own thing and chat, there’s usually at least a couple of us on at a time. Sometimes we get together and do content, boss, help each other out, and also skill at our Clan Citadel.

The Clan Citadel is our very own castle in the sky, located between Falador and Rimmington where you can skill at various plots for lots of XP and even get a citadel payment from Hinze123 for 500k if you do less than half your weekly cap on the loom (1349/2700) with a full citadel cap. If you can’t get in touch with her or a silver key for this before the citadel resets (between Saturday/Sunday), post proof of your cap in the thread or you will not be paid. Feel free to ask for more details in the actual clan chat. The fund is made possible thanks to generous donations by goons.

The citadel itself is made possible thanks to the extensive work of previous clan owners, Manyorcas getting the citadel to tier 6, and FlexMentallo/99 CENTS AMIGO getting us to the final tier 7. I sort of snuck in while we were working towards our glorious clan dragon dragoon which now flies around the citadel in all its goony glory.

Overall, Goonscapers are some of the most easygoing, helpful, non-prick goons you’ll play with, even if we get mad at video games from time to time and have to be cared for like little babbys.

[P3]. Skills

Skills are the meat of this game. Almost everything revolves around training them to their maximum level of 99 (120 for Dungeoneering) and beyond, and below are quick and brief descriptions about each of them below (skills that are for members beyond level 5 are marked with a ♦):

Attack - Determines melee combat accuracy and ability to equip (most) melee weapons. Melee combat is strong against ranged, but weak against magic.

Strength - Determines how hard you hit with melee combat, and whether or not you can lift boulders above your head.

Defence - Your chance of avoiding taking damage, as well as what armours you’re capable of equipping.

Ranged - Your skill with ranged weapons, from bows to crossbows, and even chakrams for the Xenas at heart. Ranged is weak to melee, but strong against magic.

Prayer - How much the gods of Gilenor will grant benefits to you. Burying, offering and scattering bits of dead monsters and players will get this stat up.

Magic - A skill that works in both combat and skilling. You can cast spells using runes to hurt monsters, enchant jewelry, teleport and more. Magic is strong against melee but weak against ranged.

Runecrafting - Craft runes with rune essences, gain XP. Used to be far more tedious prior to the introduction of the Runespan and its Wicked Robes.

Construction ♦ - Build your own house in a magic portal, where you can show off your wealth, store items, and house pets.

Dungeoneering – More a minigame than a skill, it involves you and up to four other players delving deep underground butt-naked, using the skills you have to survive floor after floor as you go deeper and deeper. Fun content with great rewards.

Constitution – Your health. If it hits 0, you die. Raise it to improve your HP and healing from various foods.

Agility ♦ – Arguably the worst skill in the game, click on obstacle courses thousands of times to gain the ability to run across walls, but slip on the same log over and over.

Herblore ♦ – Highly expensive, highly useful, clean herbs and make them into potions that give all sorts of powerful boosts and benefits.

Thieving ♦ – Pick pockets of NPCs, get punched in the face, repeat. Loot urns in a pyramid, get bitten by snakes, repeat.

Crafting – Create armour out of dragon hides and mushroom spores, or create fancy jewelry with gold and gems. A somewhat versatile skill.

Fletching ♦ – A skill that lets you make the weapons and ammo you need for the Ranged skill. Cheap and even profitable, but very tedious.

Slayer ♦ - Compliments combat in general, get assigned by Slayer Masters to commit genocide on different groups of monsters, some you can’t kill without gimmicks or higher levels in the skill.

Hunter ♦ - Poach and trap wildlife for their hides and bones, or capture various implings in jars like Pokemon.

Divination ♦ - The newest skill, drain floating orbs and thrust your pelvis at glowing holes in the ground to gain the ability to craft skilling/gathering locations and items to heal you, revive you, or bank your items.

Mining - A skill entirely devoted to swinging your pick at rocks. Click on rocks over and over to get various ores.

Smithing - The complimentary skill to mining. Smelt the ores you mined into bars to create billions of metal armour and weapons to flood the economy with.

Fishing - Fish thousands of tuna, sharks, eels and lobsters in an attempt to extinct all marine life.

Cooking – Cook pizzas, pies, meat and more – or burn it all with the grace of a goon.

Firemaking – Originally a test skill, burn as many logs as you can in an attempt to burn a hole in the ozone layer.

Woodcutting – Clearcut your way through millions of trees to burn or fletch them, or sell it to others willing to forsake Mother Earth.

Farming ♦ – The ultimate afk skill, plant trees, herbs, bushes and other greenery to harvest and pick for profit in a world where papayas and coconuts have more value than gold bars.

Summoning ♦ – Collect charms, combine them with spirit pouches, spirit shards and a tertiary ingredient to summon creatures to do your bidding, whether that’s to hold your junk, brawl with your foes, or get stuck behind fences.

Invention ♦ – Innovate your gear with unique features and buffs, including the ability to make them-

:stare:

Being a member gives all skills enhanced xp rates and better methods of training than free-to-play, as well as access to bonus xp which doubles xp rates and the occasional double xp weekends.

[P4]. Minigames

Membership will give you access to a variety of minigames, from the dead on arrival Rat Pits, to the pubbie infested xp scramble of Warbands in Gilenor’s wilderness. Some of the more noteworthy minigames are briefly described below, and you’ll come to discover others as you explore Runescape’s vast world.

Daily

Big Chinchompa - Run around catching butterflies so a giant chinchill- chinchompa tries to catch them and falls asleep. A very decent Hunter trainer you can do twice a day.

Shooting Star - Meteors smash down on random parts of Gilenor. Mine through them to save the Teletubby within for set rewards. Once daily.

Evil Tree - Trees Gone Wild. Not the kind of wood you want to wake up to in the morning! Chop them, burn them, and loot them. Twice daily.

Sinkholes - A mini version of Dungeoneering, find entrances randomly spawned throughout the world, pop in with four others and collect random junk for a chance at tokens and xp.

Weekly

Meg - Your biggest (and only) fan located in Player Owned Ports in Port Sarim (more on that later), give her advice on her adventures so she can succeed (or fail) and bring you back a treasure chest (gold and an xp lamp).

Penguin Hide and Seek - Hunt penguins in disguise all over Gilenor to gather points to turn in for cash or exp. Requires quests to get the full benefit.

Circus - Perform tiered tricks in a travelling circus for exp and costumes as obnoxious NPCs yell at you to DO SOMETHING!

Monthly

Troll Invasion - Fight back or guard against a bunch of trolls for a large xp reward :fut:

God Statues - Help a gnome build statues in the likeness of gods. Build the right one for an area to get prayer xp. Build the wrong one and you get to kill an rear end in a top hat fanatic for slayer xp.

Other

Player Owned Ports - Requires Level 90 in at least one of the minigame's skills to start. Send ships out on voyages that come and go in real time to gather goods in ~exotic~ Eastern lands to make high end gear to use or sell. Comes with bonus 'Asian' accent voiceovers done by Brits who have never spoken to one in their life.

Temple Trekking - Take to the swampy bog lands of Mortyania inhabited by ghosts and vampyres to assist different folks safely through the dangerous region. Rewards are versatile - xp boosting gear, xp books, and various materials to sell or use. Older content, but it stands up well against the test of time.

[P5]. Quests

Runescape is unique in its quests. There are close to 200 as of this writing, and they range from the soul crushingly awful poo poo puzzler, Elemental Workshop III to the epic battle for power in Ritual of the Mahjarrat. There's plenty of variety in-between as well - the scorching hot desert rescue called Stolen Hearts, the shadowy infiltration into the Branches of Darkmeyer, the flop of a Le Reddit hilarity that is Bringing Home the Bacon, and even a horror survival adventure that gives a nod to Resident Evil in the spooky good adventure of Broken Home.

Whether you're looking for quests that will delight you or slowly kill your will to live, Runescape has it all!

On a side note, Dungeoneering also comes with a series called the Dungeoneering Sagas – stories that you play out that revolve around Daemonheim. While they’re not ‘quests’, they are some of the most well-written, entertaining pieces of content Jagex has made to date and are an absolute must play.

[P6]. Treasure Hunter/Solomon's General Store

The game's source of microtransactions, Treasure Hunter (TH) provides in-game items that have benefits to boost your gameplay. The mascot for TH is a creepy girl named Alice, who stares at you with eyes that are empty voids while you open chests with Keys, earned in-game or by paying money/bonds. If you want to feel like a Runescape Superstar, buy hundreds of keys and use them all at once to get inventories full of useless items and xp.

Solomon's General Store also has microtransactions, leaning more towards cosmetic than beneficial. Get Runecoins through money/Bonds to buy overrides, emotes, and animations and pets. The store occasionally discounts items and provides freebies to members, as well as being merged with the Loyalty Shop - a system that racks up points based on unbroken membership time to be used on beneficial auras, as well as select items of Solomon's store.

[P7]. Extras

While these isn’t goon made, they are worth checking out:

Here at Goonscape, you're encouraged to make lots of content posts. That could mean screenshots of awesome gains, pubbies being pubbies, cool recorded videos and guides, or chatlogs exposing Goonscapers for the giant nerds they are.

(If you want to take high quality png screenies in excess for cropping and sharing, I recommend getting Dropbox - it has a Print Screen feature that automatically snaps your screen and saves it instantly)

Now for the goonbrews!

Goonscape Bragging Sheet – A spreadsheet where goons can write down their current stats to see how they measure up to other goons (along with a bonus height sheet). Everyone is highly encouraged to add themselves to this and to update it from time to time!

Pizza Lady's Bank Cleaning Services – Since discovering just how messy goons are, I started a free bank cleaning service for goons. To date, 23 different goons have had their banks tidied, with some even getting Royal Crossbows forged and Jad being killed for them. If you have a bank in need of cleaning send me a message in game or by SA private message and we’ll arrange a time to get that thing spiffed up! Don’t believe me? See the results in the link for yourself, or check out some videos of the cleaning in action.

Faces of Runescape – If you ever wondered just what the Runescape community looks like, as well as what varied and well informed opinions they hold, wonder no more. Prepare yourself for a descent into a very ugly despair, here comes Faces of Runescape!
Faces of Runescape I
Faces of Runescape II
Faces of Runescape III – Now with quotes!
Faces of Runescape IV – Brought to you by generous goon citadel donations!

Quoting myself for the new thread at Hinze's request:

Augster posted:

Howdy all, thought I'd share some info about the new preferred Slayer task system.

First of all check this out from the official RS wiki. What to note is the weighting system for each task a master can assign, explained thusly:

quote:

Slayer assignments work from a weighting system - each Slayer target has as specific weighting for that Slayer master. To estimate your percentage chance of obtaining a slayer task, you can add up the weightings for targets you can be assigned from the tables above (So don't add any NPCs you have blocked or don't have the requirements for).

When you have the total number, the percentage chance you can get assigned it is: (NPC's weighting / your total) x 100.

Therefore, tasks you don't like that have a high weighting are better to block, while those you hate with a low rating are better to simply skip. Likewise, those with a low weighting that you enjoy/are great xp are better to prefer, while a good task with a high weighting (such as airuts) can be left alone (unless you want them always extended). Preferring a task will also automatically extend it. I believe an extended task is 20% more than what you'd get normally.

For how preferring works, think of the tasks a master can assign as a drop table. The task is rolled when you ask for a task, and if the task isn't a preferred one it rolls again and if that one's preferred, you'll get it. If not, you'll get the original one. It's like an invisible slayer VIP ticket except you don't get to choose for yourself.

My current block/prefer list for Morvran. Will probably change in the next few days depending on how great edimmu are.

For those inclined to unfair assistance, the Harps in Prfid are autoclickerable as hell. Grab the murgee autoclicker, set it to 1 minute per click, then click "Extra Random Delay" and punch in 30 seconds. It'll click once every 60 to 90 seconds, just like a real person doing semi-afk Harp. Most importantly, it's a bit of software I've been using for months and won't get you banned. Every week I do my Citadel cooking by setting this thing to click every 20 seconds with a 2 second extra random delay, and set it to click 245 times, and let it do its thing for an hour and a half. I don't even bother babysitting it anymore, I set it up before I go to bed, turn my monitor off, and hit the sack.

I've been autoclicking the harps literally all day today while I study for exams - gonna have my Crystal Hatchet done soon.
