so I stream bad jrpgs to my friends and right now I'm doing tales of the abyss. about 10 minutes in we noticed that there are a hell of a lot of made up words in the game so I started making a list of them. This game probably has the most techno-babble ever.

I'm going to try and explain what these words mean, if I can. aside from that this thread is to talk about your favorite dumb made up video game words like magitechnology.

This list is long and I've only played for like 13 hours.

fonon: a particle of sound (um....) that makes up everything
Daathic fonic art: an art from the city of Daath
Ancient Ispanian: hell if I know dude
Cheagle: tiny rabbit things that burned down a forest
capacity core: gameplay thing that boosts your stats on level up...maybe
Order of Lorelei: order that lives in Daath and controls something or other
Field of Fonons: gameplay thing that changes your moves when you stand in it
Seventh Fonons: secret fonons that only some people can manipulate
hyperresonance: caused by two seventh fonists doing something together
fonstone: this word is so loving stupid and I laugh every time it comes up
Score: the fate of everything, that anyone can read
fon belt: no drat clue
fonon frequency: the frequency of each thing made of fonons, what ever that means
fonon elements: the periodic table of fonon elements only has seven elements
fon slots: I don't know
fon verse: parts of the fonic hymns
Hod War: a war in Hod but I don't know what or where Hod is.
fon slot seal: something that seals your fon slots, of course??? right?
Fifth Fonon: one of the elements but I don't know which
fonic alphabet: probably only has 7 letters
Scorers: people who read the score to you
The Sephiroths: trees that hold up the outer land of the world
Memory Particles: what the gently caress is this
Grand Fonic Hymn: the strongest Fonic Hymn ever spoken
Fontech doll: stupid thing that a character you shouldn't use fights with
Fon Disc: a CD full of FON DATA
Planet Storm: sounds important. no idea tho
Fomicry Project: a secret plot to create replicas of things and people
isofon: something that has the same fonon frequency of something else. this makes no sense at all.
3.14159265358979: the fonon frequency of an isofon of an aggregate sentience of the seventh fonon, Lorelai
Aggregate sentience: when fonons group together they become sentient, but there are apparently only seven of these even though people are made of fonons :wtf:
Shadow: the aggregate sentience of one of the fonons, first I think
Rem: sixth aggregate sentience
fontech signature: nope
Fonstone Fragment: seriously fonstone is a funny word
Fontech Blaster II: a robot that blasts fonons into things, mark II.
Gnomeday: the second day of the week, I think.
intrinsic vibration: the vibration that each living thing makes, complete with corresponding sound
fonic arte: a battle move made up of fonons. Demon Fang.
Daathic seal: seal on something from Daath
fon machine: l o l
fonic hymn: a hymn that is sung to cast magic or something. there are 7 of these of course
Qliphoth: the inner part of the world, covered up by the outer lands and void of sunlight. the titular Abyss.
Sephiroth Trees: the trees that hold up the outer lands
passage ring: a way from the Qliphoth to the outer lands.
replica brains: brains used to make replicas
perfect replica: a replica indistinguishable from the original
fonon activator: activates the fonons, man
fonon laboratory: a lab for fontech experiments, like fomicry
fonimin: the material used to make replicas
Yulian seal: a seal from a town in the Qliphoth
Closed Score: a secret, hidden part of the Score that only Maestro Rank and above can read
Maestro rank: see above
fonology: the study of fonons...
Personal Score: the Score that is read to you on your birthday that explains what will happen that year. nothing is a mystery.
Remday: first day of the week?

I will of course update this thread with new words as they pop up.

gomen na sai evil eagle, gomen

anyway my personal favorite made up jrpg word is also from a tales game, gald.

because they wanted to be fancy and unique instead of just copying wizardy and using gold, but they were also creativley bankrupt and couldn't come up with gil or zenny or something cool so they just changed a letter.

that, or someone just hosed up when making phantasia and it stuck

It then goes on, for 50 levels of story quest, side quest, levequest, guildhest.... To make endless measurement puns. Using made up measurements.

I like dumb JRPGs just fine but one time I tried playing FFXIII and that's a bad idea for several reasons and they frontload the gently caress out of that game with pure, dumbass made up terminology to the point where it doesn't make you curious about the world and setting like it's intended to so much as it just makes you kind of angry.

Ironically enough, barkley is one of the few jrpgs I really like in terms of gameplay. I think it's because the attack-timing system reminds me a lot of Paper Mario

I too am angered by made up words whose meanings are obvious from context. And if those words contain apostrophes? Boiling with rage right here.

fontech weapon: magifonontechnology powered gun or something
Albert Style: a sword fighting style that does not use a shield
dividing line: separates the Qliphoth and the Outer Lands

Sounds like I should play FFXIII if it has as much technobabble as you're saying. I thought it was just L'Cie and Fal'Cie or whatever. I do have it on steam...

half of these things are just the word 'fon' being used for magic

'fontech' and 'fontech weapon' shouldnt count as separate technobabble terms

also tales of the abyss is extremely good (though i agree they should have cut back on the words some)

Lead in with Pearl Jam, 10cc, and The Lovin' Spoonful and you can probably convince people it's just a bunch of music references.
