Nice, the effect reminds me a lot of Homeworld. Now you just need some gloomy sound-effects and you're good to go!

Well one reason we're holding off on gameplay vids is due to our publisher overlords. We'll be doing a series of gameplay videos and a bigger push later in the year closer to release. The big indicator of that starting will be when we release the long promised second story trailer from the Arcturan perspective.

But along with that will also be getting towards the closed beta period.

The past 8 months or so really involved reworking a lot of the core code of the strategic game. A lot of systems "worked" but couldn't be expanded on or we found out needed extensive re-writing to really operate as designed. All of which would have come out in beta or made it much harder. We have taken the chance to update the UI and one thing we're doing now is reworking the building art for colonies.

Trade's done through trade treaties that once established will grow into netting BCs for the empires.

Basic pirates as a random event basically act as a BC penalty on a system until cleaned up by a fleet. So not the "blowing up unprotected planets" threat from a lot of current games. But again may be subject to changes during testing.

MikeC: When it's done is an awful response but kinda the one we have at the moment. We are aiming for end of this year. We were aiming originally for the end of last year but we've been reworking a lot of the code base. But it's given us an opportunity to do things like rework the building art into 3d, add some more strike craft art, etc. that you'll see in the coming months.

While we've kept pretty close to the design doc to try to avoid feature creep, we've had some "UI creep" with trying to increase feedback with dynamic tooltips.

Well gameplay videos and streaming need to go through the publisher overlords first, but we'll be doing a bigger blitz on that in the coming months. The first sign of the LoR pocalypse is going to be when we show off the Arcturan story trailer so that should give a good heads up for when we're closer to closed beta and recruiting goons.

Anyway playing the cards close is kinda needed since we are a small team and have a pretty tight vision for the game . There's a few things that current 4xes are doing (quest chains) that we're not, but we're also trying to provide a more in depth tactical game than what is currently out there.

One irritating thing about some scifi settings is how the elder races are downright stagnant, but we're trying to show that there's been a bit of change over the past 1,000 years :-)

Well I was a bit surprised to see responses here.

We're chugging away at things which is why we've been pretty quiet. I could use about 3 copies of myself right now, one to do tactical tweaks, another to work on cutscenes, and a third to work on character animations.

Warp amplifier constructed cutscene. We're orchestrating the scenes now, a lot of these cutscenes are for when you build big structures like Artificial Planets and Stargates. So rewarding the player for more than explosions.

Right now I'm working on some shaders for the grid in tactical.

The big three things we're working on until closed beta begins are:
1) Tactical
2) AI
3) Load/Save

The third we're trying to make efficient save files. We don't want to be one of those 4x games with 1gig saves.

Honestly I would focus on gameplay, I dont think people will like or dislike the game based on cutscenes and an alien figure in the background having some movement, but if the Tactical combat sucks, well...
